In this paper, a numerical analysis is carried out to study the characteristics of supercavitating flows and the drag of relatively simple two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies which can be used for supercavity generation device, cavitator, of a high-speed underwater vehicle. In order to investigate the suitability of numerical models, cavity flows around the hemispherical head form and two-dimensional wedge are calculated with combinations of three turbulence models(standard $k-{\epsilon}$, realizable $k-{\epsilon}$, Reynolds stress) and two cavitation models(Schnerr-Sauer, Zwart-Gerber-Belamri). From the results, it is confirmed that the calculated cavity flow is more affected by the turbulence model than the cavitation model. For the calculation of steady state cavity flows, the convergence in case of the realizable $k-{\epsilon}$ model is better than the other turbulence models. The numerical result of the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model is changed less by turbulence model and more robust than the Zwart-Gerber-Belamri model. Thus the realizable $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model and the Schnerr-Sauer cavitation model are applied to calculate supercavitating flows around disks, two dimensional $10^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ wedges. In case of the disk, the cavitation number dependences of the cavity size and the drag coefficient predicted are similar to either experimental data or Reichardt's semi-empirical equations, but the drag coefficient is overestimated about 3% higher than the Reichardt's equation. In case of the wedges, the cavitation number dependences of the cavity size are similar to experimental data and Newman's linear theory, and the agreement of the cavity length predicted and Newman's linear theory becomes better as decreasing cavitation number. However, the drag coefficients of wedges agree more with experimental data than those of Newman's analytic solution. The cavitation number dependences of the drag coefficients of both the disk and the wedge appear linear and simple formula for estimating the drag of supercavitating disks and wedges are suggested. Consequently, the CFD scheme of this study can be applied for numerical analysis of supercavitating flows of the cavitator and the cavitator design.
Three-dimensional flow analysis is implemented to investigate the flow through transonic axial-flow compressor rotor(NASA R67), and to evaluate the performances of k-$\epsilon$ and Baldwin-Lomax turbulence models. A finite volume method is used for spatial discretization. And, the equations are solved implicitly in time with the use of approximate factorization. Upwind difference scheme is used for inviscid terms, but viscous terms are centrally differenced. The flux-difference-splitting of Roe is used to obtain fluxes at the cell faces. Numerical analysis is performed near peak efficiency and near stall. And, the results are compared with the experimental data for NASA R67 rotor. Blade-to-Blade Mach number distributions are compared to confirm the accuracy of the code. From the results, we conclude that k-$\epsilon$ model is better for the calculation of flow rate and efficiency than Baldwin-Lomax model. But, the predictions for Mach number and shock structure are almost same.

The turbulent viscous wake flows behind a single airfoil, two-dimensional stationary blade row and three-dimensional rotating blade row were calculated, and the numerical results were compared with experimental ones. The numerical technique was based on the SIMPLE algorithm using three turbulent closure models, standard k-.epsilon. model(WFM), low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model(LRN) and Reynolds stress model (RSM). In the case of a single airfoil, WFM, LRN and RSM presented fairly good velocity distributions in the wake compared with experimental data. In the case of the stationary blade row, LRN and RSM presented better results than WFM for wake velocity distribution, and especially LRN showed best results among these three turbulent models. In the case of the rotating blade row, WFM and LRN showed fairly good agreement with experimental data of the three-dimensional velocity component distributions in the range from hub to mid span region. LRN was also superior to WFM in accuracy of prediction for the wake velocity distribution as same with the cases of a airfoil and the stationary blade row.
Barker (1997) has argued that all the three approaches to anaphora, namely, E-type theories, Discourse Representation Theory, and Dynamic Semantics, are faced with the so-called 'double-bind' problem in the quantifier/variable-binding model of anaphora. Recently, in the same journal, Slater (2000) has claimed that the so-called epsilon account (Slater 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997) handles the problem without any difficulty. However, it will be proposed in this paper that the epsilon account has its own problems in handling the quantifier/variable-binding, and that as argued in Yoon (1998), the so-called‘conjunctive paraphrase’account is the correct solution to the problem, which is intuitively supported as well.
The paper reports the outcome of a numerical study of flow over idealized L-shaped ribleted surfaces with two-equation turbulence models. In the present study, the Launder and Sharma's k-.epsilon. turbulence model (LS model) is basically N employed, but with a little modification of the additional .epsilon.-source term without affecting its level under 2-dimensional straining in which the term has been calibrated. Compared to the original LS model, the present model has predicted greatly improved drag reduction behavior for this geometry. As a drag reduction mechanism, it is found that the skin-friction in the riblet valleys might be sufficient to overcome the skin-friction increase near the riblet tip. The present predicted results are in good agreement with the recent DN S ones by Choi et al. (1993): differences in the mean velocity prof ile and turbulence quantities are found to be limited to the riblet cavity region. It is also found that turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress above the riblets are also reduced in drag-reducing configurations.
Dielectric properties of sardine-starch paste with moisture content of 4 to $13\%$ were investigated as functions of moisture and frequency. And the effects of the levels of fat and starch of the mixtures upon dielectric permittivity, critical moisture, were also mentioned. In addition, a theoretical prediction of frequency dependence of dielectric constant which was computed by the lumped circuit of two layer condenser model was evaluated. For the preparation of sardine-starch paste, comminuted sardine meat was washed thoroughly several times in chilled water by soaking and decanting, and finally centrifuged. This procedure was extended longer to provide a low fat sample. The centrifuged meat was mixed with adequate amounts of starch and salt, and ground for 25 minutes in a stone mortar, moulded in the form of disk with 7cm diameter and 1.2cm thickness and then freeze dried. Dried meat disks were cut off for the size of 5.5cm diameter and 1.0cm thickness and their moisture contents were controlled in humidified desiccators with saturated solutions. Dielectric constants of sardine-starch paste tended to decrease frequency was increased showing a critical charge at the moisture called critical moisture content. In case of the sample with $20\%$ starch and $2\%$ salt an average complex permittivity($\epsilon^{\ast}$) at 7 to $8\%$ morsture as the critical moisture content was presented; $\epsilon^{\ast}$=3.37+j 0.39 at 0.1 MHz, $\epsilon^{\ast}$=2.54+j 0.19 at 15 MHz, and $\epsilon^{\ast}$=2.15+j 0.08 at 1.8 GHz, respectively. The theoretically obtained complex permittivity values from the two layer condoner model were in close agreement with these actual measurements under the same conditions, that appeared as $\epsilon^{\ast}$=2.53+i 0.09 at 0.1 MHz and $\epsilon^{\ast}$=2.28+j 0.06 at 15 MHz, respectively. The fast level of the mixture also revealed an influence on dielectric property that defatted neat with $1.0\%$ fat showed a higher hc and $\epsilon^{\ast}$ value than the meat with $4.8\%$ fat. Complex permittivity being related to the moisture level remained nearly unchanged or slightly changed at the moisture range of 4 to $8\%$ but was dispersed widely at higher moisture contents.
Numerical study on turbulent and mean structures of a turbulent boundary layer with longitudinal and spanwise pressure gradient is carried out by using Reynolds-stress-model (RSM). The existence of pressure gradient in a turbulent boundary layer causes the skewing or divergence of rates of strain, which contributes to production of turbulent kinetic energy. Also, this augmentation of production due to extra rates of strain can increase the turbulent mixing and cause the anisotropy of turbulent intensities in the outer layer. This paper uses the Reynolds Stress Model to capture anisotropy of turbulent structures effectively and is devoted to compare the results computed by using RSM and the standard k-.epsilon. model with experimental data. It is concluded that the RSM can produce the more accurate predictions for capturing the anisotropy of turbulent structure than the standard k-.epsilon. model.
A modified k-$\epsilon$ model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary layer flows. In order to develop the eddy viscosity model for the problem, the flow is divided into three regions; namely, pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The pre-transition eddy-viscosity is formulated by extending the mixing Length concept. In the transition region, the eddy-viscosity model employs two length scales, i.e., pre-transition length scale and turbulent length scale pertaining to the regions upstream and the downstream, respectively, and a university model of stream-wise intermittency variation is used as a function bridging the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. The proposed model is applied to calculate three benchmark cases of the transitional boundary layer flows with different free-stream turbulent intensity ( $1\%{\~}6\%$ ) under zero-pressure gradient. It was found that the profiles of mom velocity and turbulent intensity, local maximum of velocity fluctuations, their locations as well as the stream-wise variation of integral properties such as skin friction, shape factor and maximum velocity fluctuations are very satisfactorily Predicted throughout the flow regions.
