  • Geochemical and physical investigations such as ${\delta}^{13}C$ isotope ratio, carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, magnetic susceptibility (MS), and particle size analyses were carried out on the estuarine tidal flat sediments from the west coast of Korea in order to reconstruct the East Asian summer monsoon variability during the late Pleistocene and Holocene Our results indicated that the summer monsoon probably peaked around 7,700-7,800 yr BP and then started to decline about 7,400 yr BP in the Korean peninsular, and that the monsoon was relatively weak between 24,000-24,500 yr BP but relatively strong between 18,500-19,500 yr BP during the Last Glacial Maximum. Our estuarine geochemical data have proven to be valuable as a new proxy for detecting the shifts in monsoon strength. This new evidence will be helpful, especially for Korean paleoenvironmental studies with few proxy data archives.

  • The Temporal variability in the food chain structure of bacteria in the sedimentary organic matter was investigated using stable isotope and fatty acid. Potential organic matter sources (Land plant, Marine POM, benthic microalgae, Riverine POM), sedimentary organic matter and bacteria were sampled in Gamo largoon and Nanakita estuary. The main objective of the present study was to determine food sources of bacteria along with temporal variability. Land plant (${\delta}^{13}C$ = -26.6‰ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ = 3.6‰) and Riverine POM (${\delta}^{13}C$ = -25.5‰ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ = 8.9‰) were isotopically distinct from benthic microalgae (${\delta}^{13}C$ = -16.3‰ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ = 6.2‰) and Marine POM (${\delta}^{13}C$ = -20.3‰ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ = 10.3‰). ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of sedimentary organic matter showed a distinct gradient in the range of -20.7‰ to -191‰. The stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values of bacteria in the study were -20.8‰ to -18.6‰ for ${\delta}^{13}C$ and 6.5‰ to 8.6‰ for ${\delta}^{15}N$. From this results based on stable isotope measurements showed that in the bacteria was found to be dominated by Marine POM and Benthicmicoralge during 0 to 20 day. Whereas, terrestrial plant and riverine POM showed little in fluence to bacteria during the experiment.

  • Long chain plant waxes (n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, and n-alcohols) and their carbon isotopic compositions (${\delta}^{13}C$) in geologic archives are valuable tools for paleovegetation reconstruction. However, the sensitivity of different plant wax constituents to vegetation shift is not well understood. This study explores controls on the variation in ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of long-chain n-alkanes ($C_{27}$ to $C_{33}$) and n-alkanoic acids ($C_{26}-C_{30}$) in the Gulf of Mexico core sediments (ODP 625B) near the Mississippi River delta. n-Alkanoic acids' ${\delta}^{13}C$ values were higher than those of n-alkanes by 1-2‰ on average and such a pattern is the opposite from their isotope fractionation observed in living plants: 1-2‰ smaller in n-alkanes than n-alkanoic acids. We attribute this offset to contributions from aquatic plants or microbes that produce high concentrations of $^{13}C-enriched$ long-chain n-alkanoic acids. The sensitivity of n-alkanes and n-alkanoic acids to vegetation and climate varied among chain lengths. The $n-C_{33}$ alkanes were most sensitive to $C_4$ grassland expansion among n-alkane homologues, while no specific trend was observed in n-alkanoic acids. This is due to the similarity in n-alkanoic acid concentrations between $C_3$ and $C_4$ plants by homologues and low terrestrial plant-derived n-alkanoic acid contributions to the sediments. The results of this study suggest that long chain n-alkanoic acids' ${\delta}^{13}C$ values in sediments may be influenced by contributions from different sources such as aquatic plants or microbial inputs and therefore interpretations regarding this matter should be cautiously formulated. We suggest that there is a need for further studies on characterizing long-chain n-alkanoic acids ($C_{26}-C_{34}$) in aquatic plants and microbes from various climates and environments in order to investigate their production and integration into sedimentary archives.

  • To study whether N isotope composition (${\delta}^{15}N$) of crop reflects the kind of fertilizer (chemical or organic) applied to field, a pot experiment was conducted. Corn (Zea mays L.) was cultivated under greenhouse conditions for 70 days. Composted pig manure and urea were applied at 0 and 0 (C0U0), at 0 and 300 (COU2), at 300 and 0 (C2U0) and at 150 and $150kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ (C1U1), respectively. The ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of composted pig manure and urea were + 13.9‰ and -2.3‰, respectively. The ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of whole parts (roots + stems + leaves + grains) were + 12.7, + 12.9, + 14.0 and + 13.0‰ for C0U0, C0U2, C2U0 and C1U1 treatments, and were not significantly affected by the application of isotopically different N sources (P<0.05). However, leaves or grains showed significantly (P<0.05) different ${\delta}^{15}N$ values between treatments. The ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of leaves and grains were + 14.3 and + 16.2‰ for C2U0, +13.2 and +13.9‰ for C0U0, +10.1 and + 12.6‰ for C1U1 and +10.1 and +12.4‰ for C0U2 treatments. The different ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of corn from the values of N sources (compost and urea) applied to soil showed that the ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of corn were affected not only by the isotope composition of N source, but also by N pool mixing and isotope fractionation accompanying N transformation. This study suggests that although the ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of crop are not identical to the ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of N sources applied to fields, the application of isotopically different N sources such as compost and chemical fertilizer may result in qualitative difference in ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of crop.

  • The spatial variability in the food chain structure of an estuarine environment(Nanakita estuarine, Japan) was investigated using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope. Potential organic matter sources(TP:Terrstrial Plant, MPOM:Marine particulate organic matter, BMA:Benthic microalgae, EPOM:Estuarine particulate organic matter), sedimentary organic matter and benthic invertebrates(Nuttallia olivacea and Nereidae) were sampled at four locations with different tidal flat types(e.g. sanddy, sanddy-muddy and muddy). The main objective of the present study was to determine food sources of Nuttallia olivacea and Nereidae along with small-scale spatial variability within the community of benthic invertebrates. TP(${\delta}^{13}C=-26.6{\pm}0.76$ and ${\delta}^{15}N=2.7{\pm}0.31$) and EPOM(${\delta}^{13}C=-25.5{\pm}0.13$ and ${\delta}^{15}N=5.2{\pm}0.46$) were isotopically distinct from BMA(${\delta}^{13}C=-16.3$ and ${\delta}^{15}N=6.2$) and MPOM(${\delta}^{13}C=-19.6{\pm}0.08$ and ${\delta}^{15}N=8.9{\pm}1.70$). ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of sedimentary organic matter showed a distinct gradient in the range of -27.4 to -22.8‰ with a declining trend from the upstream to the downstream stations. The stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values of benthic invertebrates in the study site was -22.8 to -18.4‰ for ${\delta}^{16}C$ and 8.1 to 11.9‰ or ${\delta}^{15}N$, respectively. Mixing model(Isosource) calculations based on stable isotope measurements showed that benthic invertebrates of Nuttallia olivacea and Nereidae were found to be dominated by MPOM and BMA in stations. Whereas, TP and EPOM showed little influence to benthic invertebrates. The current result suggests that the different contribution for benthic invertebrates should be affected by both seasonal variation and physical factor among stations.

  • Stable isotope, paleoceanographic and sedimentological analyses were carried out along the core Ml5612 from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Distinct negative ${\delta}^{18}O anomalies punctuate the planktonic isotope records and correlate with the Heinrich-IRD cvents. The IRD layer in the corc contains varying amounts of quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, calcite, dolomite and mica, in which detrital carbonate contributes between I and 13% (except H3 and H6). Anomalies are strongest in the N. pachydenna (sin.) isotope record. Systematic changes in the ${\delta}^{18}O offset of G. hul/aides and G. inJlata signify variations in mid-latitude thermocline structure. In conjunction with negative benthic ${\delta}^{13}C anomalies, the data document a stronger contribution of a ${\delta}^{13}C depleted, nutrient-rich water mass during the IRD events. The ${\delta}^{13}C amplitude of > 1 $\textperthousand$ between 25 and 57 ka indicates changes between northern source (NADW) and southern source (AABW) water masses at this site. The IRD layers in the core Ml56l2 are correlative with those from the core S075-26KL and DSDP 609. The IRD layers from the Portuguese margin arc coeval with HI, H2 and H4 of the open North Atlantic. This similarity (and/or synchronicity in both regions may have been resulted from common changes in a North Atlantic thermohaline switch.

  • The stable isotopes ratios ($\delta^{13}C\;and\;\delta^{15}N$) of two coexisting species of zooplankton (Daphnia longispina and Acanthodiaptomus pacificus) and POM were determined in two alpine lakes in Japan. The difference of $\delta^{13}C$ between A. pacificus and D. longispina was 4.1$\pm$0.9‰ in Lake Shirakoma, which was larger than in Lake Panke. Whereas the difference of $\delta^{15}N$ between A. pacificus and D. longispina (2.6$\pm$0.8‰) was larger in Lake Panke than in Lake Shirakoma. $\delta^{13}C$ of POM (-26.6$\pm$1.2‰) in Lake Shirakoma was different from those of zooplankton; it was heavier than those of D. longispina and A. pacificus by 3.7$\pm$1.6‰ and 7.8$\pm$1.0‰, respectively. Whereas $\delta^{15}N$ of POM (2.0$\pm$0.8‰) was similar with those of both A. pacificus and D. longispina. This implies that the two lakes may have different trophic structure and food sources for zooplankton, and each species are grazing on selectively different components of POM. The temporal variation of $\delta^{13}C$ for each zooplankton species was associated with lipid contents of zooplankton in both lakes. The results showed that stable isotope composition of zooplankton can be an useful information for understanding energy pathways and trophic structures in lakes.

  • We used stable isotope analysis to investigate the hypothesis that zooplankton were not able to utilize Microcystis as a food source. We also studied seasonal variation of the zooplankton community in a eutrophic Wangsong reservoir. The dominant copepod species changed from Cyclops vicinus to Thermocyclops taihokuensis. Density of zooplankton was suppressed by high density of Microcystis in June and the density of phytoplankton and chlorophyll a concentration was lowest in July. The difference in $\delta^{13}C$ and $\delta^{15}N$ between cladocerans (Daphnia galeata and Bosmina longirostris) and copepods showed the maximum difference of $12^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$ and $4^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$, respectively, indicating different energy sources and trophic positions between two taxonomic groups. The difference in $\delta^{13}C$ between Microcystis and zooplankton ranged from $3{\sim}7^{\circ}/_{\circ\circ}$, supporting the hypothesis that Microcystis could not be used as food source of zooplankton.

  • The vertical distribution and origin of particulate organic matter (POM) were investigated in Shingu reservoir on 4th July (pre-monsoon) and 7th August (post-monsoon) 2006. High turbid water (120 NTU) were found at 4.5 m water depth in postmonsoon period. The average C/N ratio of POM was about 5.70 and 6.96 in surface water and bottom water, respectively in pre-monsoon period, exhibiting the close values to its ratio in phytoplankton cell. However, the average C/N ratio was 7.10 in surface water and 12.81 in bottom water in post-monsoon period. In addition, the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of POM in pre-monsoon period ranged from -25.1%o to -26.1%o in whole water column, but the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of POM in post-monsoon period showed relatively wide range between -23.2%o and -27.5%o. The apparently lighter values (average -27.5%o) in near bottom water (4.5 m water depth) demonstrate that POM in high turbid water in post-monsoon period may be derived from the outside terrestrial plants through heavy rainfall during the summer monsoon period. The present study suggests that carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios as well as C/N ratios should be useful indexes to clarify the origin of POM.

  • Antioxdant effect was studied in model system with linoleic acid methylester and tocochromanols $({\alpha}-,\;{\beta}-,\;{\gamma}-,\;{\delta}-tocopherol\;and \;{\alpha}-,\;{\gamma}-,\;{\delta}-tocotrienol)$ under definite autoxidation condition-temperature $(40,\;60,\;80^{\circ}C),\;O_2\;(0,\;10,\;20%\;O_2\;in\;N_2)$. 13-Hydroperoxy-9-cis-11-trans-, 13-hydroperoxy-9-trans-11-trans-, 9-hydroperoxy-10-trans-12-cis-, 9-hydroperoxy-10-trans-12-trans-octadecadienoic acid methylester as the major oxidation product were produced from linoleic acid methylester by autoxidation, analyzed with HPLC and antioxidant activities were compared by their quantitative changes. Experimental results showed that all added tocochromanols except ${\alpha}-tocotrienol$ had antioxidant effect at $60^{\circ}C$, and also ${\alpha}-tocopherol$, ${\alpha}-tocotrienol$ and ${\delta}-tocotrienol$ had prooxidant effect at $80^{\circ}C$. And cis/trans-hydroperoxide was predominantly produced at $40^{\circ}C$, but trans/trans-hydroperoxide at $80^{\circ}C$. Except no reproductive experimental data in produced hydroperoxides amount, the production ratio of cis/trans-:trans/trans-hydroperoxides in the autoxidation condition of range from $40^{\circ}C/10%,\;O_2\;to\;60^{\circ}C/20%\;O_2$ were as follows: ${\alpha}-T>{\alpha}-T_3>{\gamma}-T>{\beta}-T>{\gamma}-T_3>{\delta}-T>{\delta}-T_3$. This result showed that ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ among tocochromanols had the lowest antioxidant effect.
