  • As a proto-modernist work the Amsterdam Exchange has been regarded as a specimen of Structural Rationalist's architecture. Because of its ma]or steel structure, use of geometry, and reminiscence of Gothic the designer of the building was labeled by Kenneth Frampton as one of the apostles of Viollet le Duc. The architect was Hendrick Petrus Berlage. Contrary to above Nicolaus Pevsner claimed that Berlage's architectural discourse was 'Anti-Rational' because of its anachronistic formal language, Expressionism. In terms of structure Berlage's idea is rational, whilst formally 'Anti-Rational'. These polarised view points were due to the legacies of Modern Architecture that was controled by hegemonic figures in terms not only of practical field but of historiography. The hegemonic figures wanted to see Berlage as what they wanted to see. With this idea, this paper is one of endeavours to collect fragmented history in the early modern architecture. The Amsterdam Exchange has a long term story until the opening. Without understanding the story we have to withhold an evaluation of Berlage's architecture.

A Study on the Architectural Planning of Urban-Rural Exchange Center for the Activation of Rural Village (농촌마을 활성화를 위한 도농교류센터 건축계획에 관한 연구)

  • The domestic rural villages have faced on the many problems in future society. The major purposes of this paper are to clarify in space program for the Rural Activating through the Urban-Rural Exchange. Firstly, it has examined the rural amenities of rural resources, such as natural surroundings, culture, history, landscape, economy, community power etc. Secondary, it was checked about analysis of operation programs corresponding to the rural resources. Thirdly, These space program of Urban-Rural Exchange, which has been archived process of spacial planning, was investigated the spacial conditions corresponding to the operation programs. To make Urban-Rural Exchange Center, it was necessary to analyze physical spacial size of building gross area, by data of cross checking with the area per capita and area per household in the rural village. According to the research, Urban-Rural Exchange Center was to be included visiting center, multipurpose room and dining room, exhibiting space, conference room, experience room, welfare space and specialized room with activation of rural village. However additional conditions are required that it is based on the sustainable development, environmentally friendly architecture both operation program and space program for the value of common society, citizen and villagers.

Evaluation of Vibration Control Performance of Outrigger Damper System for Tall Buildings Subjected to Wind Loads (아웃리거 댐퍼 시스템의 고층건물 풍응답 진동제어 성능 평가)

  • Recently, the concept of damped outrigger system has been proposed for tall buildings. But, structural characteristics and design method of this system were not sufficiently investigated to date. In this study, the dynamic response control performance of outrigger damper has been analyzed. To this end, a simplified analysis model with outrigger damper system has been developed. An artificial wind of 1000 seconds with 0.1 second time steps was generated by using a Kaimal spectrum. Analysis results show that outrigger damper system is more effective up to 20-23% in the control of dynamic response compared to conventional outrigger system. The increase of outrigger damper capacity usually results in the improved control performance. However, it is necessary to select that proper stiffness and damping values of the outrigger damper system because, the outrigger damper having large capacity is result in heavy financial burden.

  • This study has extracted elements and related factors in the modernization of Hanok, using an evaluation method, and has also considered the possibilities of modern images using AHP analysis. As a result, first, the elements that form the urban landscape of historical and cultural environment have to be created by extracting elements from the subject standard for construction of the elements selected. As for the aspect of blending history, culture and environment, scenic and important architectural aspects were delineated. Second, based on selected components of the basic type of features and construction, roof types, vertical and horizontal elements were simulated after setting the criteria. Third, according to its historical cultural circumstances the man-made landscape and the traditional measure of the model, specific values of the elements for the formation of structures were evaluated by priority. A region characterized by old city houses constructed of objective elements can possibly be combined. In addition, a Hanok multi-family house fitted for modern life and a variety of models to develop and validate the possibility and utilization of this study can be expected.

  • Traditionally exhibition design as been restricted to architectural, interior, and lighting design, but recently it has begun to overlap into environmental, performance, and installation art. Exhibition design also increasingly involves the application of film, fashion, and the new media. In the past, exhibits were arranged and displayed for the visitor to view directly, but with the development of more effective exhibit media a connection has been created between the exhibit and the visitor. However exhibition design has reached the limits of continuous growth without background theory, when now it must take Into consideration the museum's activation and the importance of the exhibition's design. Exhibition design has developed and grown rapidly since the Taejeon Expo in 1993, but it is a difficult development without a theoretical structure. The flow of exhibition design must be systemized, as the systemization of the transition process of exhibition design has not yet been achieved. This study aims to present an arrangement of exhibition design flow, and to investigate the variation factors in the transition process of exhibition design and exhibit medium development, based on the 18 year history of the Independence Hall that introduced the first systematic planning of an exhibition in 1987.

  • To date, Italian fashion rans the top even its rise is far behind Paris and New York. The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the aesthetic characteristics of the italian fashion through two representative designers who contributed to italian fashion. Italy had unique industrial system and craftsmanship from the history and sense of the beauty and the uniqueness from the culture. After the World War II, Italy started to produce elegant sportswears influenced by the progressive manufacturing techniques and practical culture of America. Italian fashion of 'easy elegance' is spearheaded by Vesace and Armani. The aesthetic characteristics of Italian fashion which are shown in the artworks of them are as follows. First, the characteristics of Versace dated from southern sensibility are sensualism, expressionism, historicism. 1) Sensualism: tight silhouette, overexposure, glamorous form, brilliant color, fabric showing femininity, gaudy accessaries 2) Expressionism: brilliant print and color, trimmings and accessaries 3) Historicism: form and motifs that are shown in the historical costume Second, the characteristics of Armani succeeded from northern tailoring are purism, functionalism, and multi-culturism. 1) Purism: clean lines, architectural and geometric forms, natural body line, neutral tones, luxurious fabric 2) Functionalism: functional form, neutral tone, natural fabrics 3) Multi-culturism: design and motif inferred from ethnic costume As such. competition between two different groups made it possible that Italian fashion occupies a special place in the international fashion system.

  • Tianjin Goldin Finance 117 tower has an architectural height of 597 m, total of 117 stories, and the coronation of having the highest structural roof of all the buildings under construction in China. Structural height-width ratio is approximately 9.5, exceeding the existing regulation code significantly. In order to satisfy earthquake and wind-resisting requirements, a structure consisting of a perimeter frame composed of mega composite columns, mega braces and transfer trusses and reinforced concrete core containing composite steel plate wall is adopted. Complemented by some of the new requirements from the latest Chinese building seismic design codes, design of the super high-rise building in high-intensity seismic area exhibits a number of new features and solutions to professional requirements in response spectrum selection, overall stiffness control, material and component type selection, seismic performance based design, mega-column design, anti-collapse and stability analysis as well as elastic-plastic time-history analysis. Furthermore, under the prerequisite of economic viability and a series of technical requirements prescribed by the expert review panel for high-rise buildings exceeding code limits, the design manages to overcome various structural challenges and realizes the intentions of the architect and the client.

A Study on Improvements of Construction and Architecture Fields in the 6th Edition of Korean Decimal Classification (KDC 제6판 건축학 분야의 분류체계 개선방안)

  • Constructions and Architecture fields were divided into Architecture engineering and Architecture in the 5th edition of Korean Decimal Classification (KDC), but those were combined in the 6th edition of KDC published in 2013. The purposes of this study are to find problems and to suggest modifications through comparing and analyzing the 5th and the 6th editions of KDC, Dewey Decimal Classification, Nippon Decimal Classification and Universal Decimal Classification. The necessity of reclassification, a long classification number for History of Architecture and addition of categories of traditional building and architectural engineering are required to improve the 6th edition of KDC and the improvements and modifications of those problems are suggested.

Use the El Centro seismic(1940, NS) analysis was performed. Analysis results, on the top floor displacement response to the earthquake response, did not have a big effect. Evaluation of Response Modification Factor of Steel Special Resisting Frame Building Before and After Retrofitted with Buckling Restrained Brace (비좌굴가새의 보강 전과 후의 철골 특수모멘트저항골조 건물의 R계수 평가)

  • This research presents that seismic performance of steel moment resisting frame building designed by past provision(UBC, Uniform Building Code) before and after retrofitted with BRB (Buckling-Restrained Brace) was evaluated using response modification factor (R-factor). In addition, the seismic performance of the retrofitted past building was compared with that specified in current provision. The past building considered two different connections: bilinear connection, which was used by structural engineer for building design, and brittle connection observed in past earthquakes. The nonlinear pushover analysis and time history analysis were performed for the analytical models considered in this study. The R-factor was calculated based on the analytical results. When comparing the R-factor of the current provision with the calculated R-factor, the results were different due to the hysteresis characteristics of the connection types. After retrofitted with BRBs, the past buildings with the bilinear connection were satisfied with the seismic performance of the current provision. However, the past buildings with the brittle connection was significantly different with the R-factor of the current provision.
