Objective : For activation of study on filed of odontology in Korean medicine academia, we analyzed the trend of articles that published in journals of Korean medicine. Methods : Using search words of odontology, in internet reference sites we collected papers and classified those into three categories like as review article, original article, case report. Observation points of each item are as follows. Inclusive item of papers; publication year, journal, number of authors, disease. Item of review article; subject of paper, Item of original article; number of patients, period of research, remedy. Item of case report; remedy, valuation of criteria, number of cases. Results : The total number of articles searched was 88, consisting of 23 review articles, 46 original articles and 19 case reports. The percentage of 'TMJ diseases' ranked highest(47.7%) in classification by disease. The most reviewed subject was 'Remedy' (16 times). '25 or less' person ranked highest(50%) in the number of patient in original articles. Acupuncture, chuna manual medicine and herbal medicine were mostly applied in case reports. The number of 'one case' reported case reports was highest(52.6%).

Objective : This study was carried out to analyze the trends of Acne related articles that have been published in the Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology & Dermatology(JKOOD). Method : We studied 29 research papers relevant to Acne that published in JKOOD from 1998 to 2013. All the paper were classified into three categories; original article, review article and case report. We sub-classified the original articles into three categories; descriptive study, analytic study and experimental study. We analyzed the case report according to various types of treatment. Results : 1. The number of searched journals is 29 papers; 17 original ordicles, 4 review articles, 8 case reports. 2. Classification of 17 original articles into three categories; 10 experimental studies, 7 descriptive studies, 0 analytic study. 3. Method of Evaluation; Korean Acne Grading System(KAGS) is used frequently in descriptive studies and experimental studies. 4. Treatment in Case reports; 7 Case reports used External medical treatments. Conclusions : It is needed to develop the methods of grading system in acne related to Oriental medicine to obtain objectivity of studies. The number of analytic study, clinical trial and experimental study is need to increase.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to confirm the effects of external applications(CLANCHE SM A Clinic) containing herbal extracts on patient with atopic dermatitis. Methods : A total of 24 patients who visited Semyung Oriental Medical Center from January 15th, 2014 to February 20th, 2014 were included in the study. In this study, the patients were treated with external applications(CLANCHE SM A Clinic) containing herbal extracts. For 4 weeks of gross examination and instrumental assesment were made before and after the study. Results : 1. In the primary endpoint, SCORAD index showed a statistically significant decline. 2. In the secondary endpoint, index of skin hydration and index of TEWL showed statistical significance. 3. In the secondary endpoint, index of skin pH showed no statistically significant result. 4. To evaluate the safety of the products for the human body, vital sign check were conducted and showed no statistically significant result. And There were no severe adverse events during this study. Therefore, it is suggested that the safety of the products, if used for certain period, should be safe for the human body. 5. In global assesment of efficacy, both experimenter and subjects evaluated external applications were effective. Conclusions : According to the above experiments, it is suggested that external applications(CLANCHE SM A Clinic) containing herbal extracts should be effective for the atopic dermatitis.

Objectives : This study was carried out to examine the change of scalp and hair condition and to evaluate the efficacy of hair growth, subject's satisfaction and safety of the Narasoo healing shampoo and Hair tonic Methods : We offered 25 subjects Narasoo healing shampoo and Hair tonic and observed the changes among the starting point, 3rd week and 6th week. Study methods include the measurement of water and sebum content of the scalp, photo of scalp and hair, thermographic images and questionnaires. Results : It is estimated that Narasoo healing shampoo and Hair tonic have the positive effects on increase of water contents hair gloss, removal of excessive hair keratin, facilitation of hair growth, and decrease of sebum contents. Conclusions : Several meaningful effects of Narasoo healing shampoo and Hair tonic are observed in this study. Additional research is needed forward.

Objective: This study was to evaluate whether herbal mixture (HM-A : Houttuynia cordata Thunberg, Rubus coreanus, Rehmannia glutinosa, Prunus yedoensis, HM-B : Houttuynia cordata Thunberg, Rubus coreanus, Rehmannia glutinosa, Angelica gigas nakai) supresses the development of atopic dermatitis in Balb/c mice sensitized by ovalbumin. Methods: Mice were sensitized by intraperitoneal injection of ovalbumin plus aluminum hydroxide hydrate, followed by epicutaneous sensitization for 6 weeks. After induced atopic dermatitis, HM-A and HM-B were orally administrated for two weeks(once a two days) as a 50 mg/kg concentration. After all mice were sacrificed at the end of the experiment, skin and blood were harvested. Results: Oral administration group was reduced the infiltration of eosinophils, mast cells and total T cells on the skin areas as well as blood analysis. Also, cutaneous expression of IL-4,13,17 decreased. Blood IgE level was decreased. Conclusion: These drugs could be potential candidates for the atopic dermatitis.

Objective : Ephedra sinica (ES) has has been used as remedy of allergic diseases for a long time in Korea. In the present study, we investigated the anti-allergic effects of ES on experimental allergic asthma mouse model using ovalbumin (OVA). Methods : BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with 100 ug of OVA and 1 mg of aluminum potassium sulfate of 0.2 ml phosphate-buffered saline(PBS) intraperitoneally on day 1 and 15. mice were challenged on 3 consecutive days with 5% OVA and AHR was assessed 24 h after the last challenge. we examined the lung histology, airway hyper sensitivity, total inflammatory cell count in bronchoaveloar lavage fluid(BALF), Th2-associated cytokines production and IgE production. Results : ES potently inhibited the lung damage and the development of Penh. ES also reduced the number of BAL cells during OVA-induced allergic asthma. Furthermore, ES inhibited cytokines production such as IL-4, IL-13 productions, and IgE level of serum. Conclusion : These results suggest that ES may inhibit the production of IL-4, IL-13, IgE and infiltration of inflammatory cell and be beneficial oriental medicine for allergic asthma.

Objective : Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch (GUF) has been used as remedy of allergic diseases for a long time in Korea. In the present study, we investigated the anti-allergic effects of GUF on experimental allergic asthma mouse model using ovalbumin (OVA). Methods : BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with 100 ug of OVA and 1 mg of aluminum potassium sulfate of 0.2 ml phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) intraperitoneally on day 1 and 15. Mice were challenged on 3 consecutive days with 5% OVA and AHR was assessed 24 hrs after the last challenge. We examined total inflammatory cell number in bronchoaveloar lavage fluid (BALF), Th2-associated cytokine productions and lung histology. Results : GUF potently inhibited the development of airway hypersensitivity and also reduced the number of BAL cells during OVA-induced allergic asthma. GUF also inhibited cytokine productions such as IL-4, IL-13 in lung tissue. Furthermore, GUF treatment inhibited allergic airway inflammation. Conclusion : These results suggest that GUF may inhibit the production of IL-4, IL-13 and infiltration of inflammatory cell and be beneficial oriental medicine for allergic asthma.

Objective : UV irradiatiion causes skin-aging involving coarse wrinkles, thickning, dyspigmentation, and rough skin surface. This study was aimed to elucidate the anti-winkle activity of complex diet of Korean red ginseng (RG) and fish oil (FO) on UV-induced Photoaging. Methods : To investigated photo-protective effects of Korean red ginseng and fish oil on UV-induced damaged skins, SKH hairless female mice were randomly divided into six groups [control, UV, UV/RG, UV/FO, UV/RG/FO(low), UV/RG/FO(high)]and orally administered three times a week respectively. UV radiation was applied to the backs of the mice three times a week for 8 weeks. Expressions of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3, MMP-13 and tissue inhibitor matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 in skin were measured by immunohistochemical staining. Results : In this study, UVB-induced epidermal hypertropy was diminished by RG group or FO group or complex group of RG and FO. Expression levels of MMP-3 and MMP-13 were reduced and expression level of TIMP-1 was increased by RG group or FO group or complex group of RG and FO. Especially MMP-3 and MMP-13 were markedly reduced by diet of FO and complex diet of RG and FO compared with untreated group. Conclusions : This results suggest that complex diet of RG and FO have a anti-wrinkle activity on UV-induced photo-aging and intrinsic aging.

Objective : Portulacae Herba (PH) can clear away heat, detoxicate, cool down blood heat. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of PH on ACD induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) in mice. Method : In this experiment, the effects of PH on changes in body weights, thicknesses and weights of ear, thicknesses of dorsum skin, degree of symptoms on the dorsum skin, histopathological changes of ear and dorsum skin, spleen weights, TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-10 in serum were observed. And the effects on the proliferation rates of splenocytes were also investigated in vitro and in vivo. Results : 1. PH spread (PHS) group and PH spread plus administered (PHS+Adm) group didn't show any changes in weight and thickness of ear. 2. But in PHS and PHS+Adm group, thickness of dorsum skin decreased significantly. 3. And PHS and PHS+Adm group showed meaningful effectiveness on ACD symptoms like erythema, desquamation and keratinization. 4. In histopathological observation, hyperplasia and edema of spongy tissues were remarkably diminished in PHS and PHS+Adm group. 5. And PH reduced the proliferation rates of splenocytes in vivo and vitro study. Conclusions : PH effectively decreased symptoms of ACD in this study, therefore PH can be one of medicinal ingredients to treat ACD.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment on rhinosinusitis by showing OMU(ostiomeatal unit) CT(computed tomography). Methods : The clinical study was done on 5 cases of rhinosinusitis patients diagnosed by OMU CT. The patients were treated with herbal medicine and acupuncture. OMU CT was taken after treatment. Results & Conclusions : After treatment, 5 rhinosinusitis patients were improved in symptoms and remarkable resolutions of rhinosinusitis in OMU CT were observed. These results suggest that Korean medical therapy could be a safe and effective intervention in rhinosinusitis and we need to have more studies for objective evaluations of Korean medicine treatment.

Objective : The purpose of this case study is to report the effectiveness of Sojongyuryang-tang gagambang in respect of spleen dampness on 3 psoriasis patients who had unhealthy dietary habit. Methods : PASI(psoriasis area and severity) score was used to check the prognosis of 3 psoriasis patients, who have been treated with Sojongyuryang-tang gagambang and acupuncture. Results : PASI score decreased as a result of Sojongyuryang-tang gagambang treatment in 3 psoriasis patients. Conclusion : Sojongyuryang-tang gagambang can be effective treatment for the unhealthy diet related psoriasis when diagnosed as spleen dampness.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to know the effect of Korean medical treatment on pompholyx including steroid rebound phenomenon. Methods : We experienced one case of pompholyx treated with herbal medicine, pharmacupuncture and acupuncture. To evaluate the results of this treatment, we categorized symptoms into four items which are vesicles, itching, erythema and erosions. Results & Conclusions : After treatment we observed the improvement. Based on this experience, it is considered that the Korean medicine can be applied to the treatment of pompholyx.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Pharmacopuncture Therapy and Needle-embedding Therapy on Androgenetic Alopecia in woman. Methods : The patient was treated by acupucture, pharmacopuncture, needle-embedding. The improvement of the patient was judged by phtograpies and VAS(Visual Analogue Scale) score. Results & Conclusions : Her hair loss and physical condition were improved remarkably, and an author consider that continuous clinical study will be needed in other needle-embedding therapy and korean medical treatment.

Objective : The purpose of this report is to know the effect of Korean medical treatments on exfloliative dermatitis. Methods : We treated a 25-years-old man patient with exfloliative dermatitis on the limbs and back with Korean medicine. After Korean medical teatment for 26 days, we measured the decrease of dermatitis and recovery of skin exfloliate. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Result & Conclusion : The symptoms of exfloliative dermatitis were significantly improved. The dry skin and itching were disappeared and skin damages were almost recovered. Thus Korean medical treatments are effective on exfloliative dermatitis.

Background and Objective : Atopic dermatitis is a type of dermatitis, an inflammatory, relapsing, non-contagious and itchy skin disorder and affecting up to 30% of children in the Korea. In this study, Huini-san, which is mentioned in Shanghanlun(傷寒論), and acupunture treatment on Atopic Disease was investigated. Methods : We have classified the patients according to the Shanghanlun six meridian patterns diagnostic system and the patients are treated with Huini-san. The severity of Atopic dermatitis was evaluated by SCORAD index, visual analogue scale(VAS) and pictures. Results : After the treatment the SCORAD index and VAS of 2 patients dicreased significantly. Conclusions : Huini-san and acupunture treatment has improved the symptoms of Atopic dermatitis in this study.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Gagamchengyoung-tang($Ji\bar{a}ji\check{a}nq\bar{i}ngy\acute{i}ng-t\bar{a}ng$) for atopic dermatitis patients diagnosed as the febrile tendency. Method : This case study was done on 6 atopic patients with febrile tendency who have visited Korean Medicine Clinic from 2013.08.01. to 2014.04.30.. Gagamchengyoung-tang($Ji\bar{a}ji\check{a}nq\bar{i}ngy\acute{i}ng-t\bar{a}ng$) was prescribed to all 6 patients and evaluated the symptom change through photographs and questionnaire. Objective SCORAD Index(OSI) was used to evaluate the objective symptom and VAS was used to evaluate the subjective change. Results & Conclusion : The Objective SCORAD index and VAS were decreased in all patients. The average OSI reduction score was 26.3. Most symptoms of 6 patients were improved. Gagamchengyoung-tang ($Ji\bar{a}ji\check{a}nq\bar{i}ngy\acute{i}ng-t\bar{a}ng$) can be effective in patients who were diagnosed as febrile tendency.

Purpose: This study aims to prove effects of an oriental medical complex therapy on vitiligo patients who have experienced the Eximer laser therapy. Method: The study conducted its investigation targeting these four patients who have not been observed with any satisfactory reaction to the Eximer laser therapy. The study analyzed the findings through the comparison on the pictures before and after the therapy. Result: After comparing the pictures, the study confirmed positive changes in the conditions of the patients. The oriental medical complex therapy turned out to be effective enough to treat the patients who have gone through the Eximer laser therapy before. Conclusion: Such result leads the study to a conclusion that the oriental medical complex therapy can be an effective way to treat these patients who do not have a satisfactory reaction to the Eximer laser therapy. In addition, the author of the study suggests that more clinical trials should be conducted.
