Long ranged groundwater-level data often have the missing intervals because of the trouble of monitoring systems at the national groundwater monitoring wells. Geostatistical methods are very useful for the supplement of the missing data. Ordinary kriging was applied for the interpolation of the missing groundwater-level data with a smooth sinusoidal variation. Conditional simulation was used for the reproduction of the missing data with high fluctuations. Two geostatistical methods produced the very accurate estimates at the missing intervals and reproduced their original variations. This fact is proved by the cross validation test and graphical method, respectively.

A calculation technique which estimates natural recharge was proposed and prepared with the existing techniques. And the necessity to obtain representative averages of 'specific yield' was discussed.

We investigate the groundwater distribution and chemical characteristics for 3 or 5 districts every year and make the hydrogeologic map on a scale of 1:50,000. We draw the hydrogeologic digital map based on "The Handbook for the Drawing and Management of Hydrogeologic Map" which was published by MOCT and KOWACO in 1998. But, the Stiff diagram and well's notation are difficult to be presented in the digital map using the commercial Arcview GIS tools. So we develop the script file with Avenue language to represent them in Arcview GIS tool. At first, we design the database for the chemical analysis result of groundwater and well identification, and make the program code with Avenue language to display them on the digital map. And next we test the usefulness of the program code. As a result, we find that the script file is very useful for drawing the symbols and diagrams in hydrogeologic digital map using ArcView GIS.

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation is going to establish 310 groundwater monitoring stations. 154 stations have been established and periodically managed since 1995. Most of stations have two monitoring boreholes which function is to monitor the unconsolidated and bedrock aquifer, and have the automatic monitoring equipment to observe groundwater level, temperature and hydraulic conductivity which are measured four times a day. Especially 44 stations are equipped with the Remote Terminal Unit. MOCT publish "an annual report of Groundwater monitoring stations" every year and everyone can get the monitoring data from Groundwater World web site(http://wamis.kowaco.or.kr/gww/)..kr/gww/).

Groundwater qualities in Nakdong river region were investigated during 1999 and 2000. Groundwater samples were collected twice from about 150 sites over the region. The EC and TDS obtained in first survey (October, 1999) show rather high values than those in second survey(April, 2000) and this seems to be caused by groundwater temperature. There is obvious positive correlation between EC and TDS. For the study area, the following equation can be written : TDS(mg/l) = <0.64~0.70> x EC(
$mutextrm{s}$ /cm). As the concentration of major ions increases in natural condition, there is a tendency that the ratio of TDS and EC has consistent value. This observation suggests that TDS measurement can be replaced by EC measurement in the some ranges. -
Situated close to Heathrow Airport, and adjacent to the M4 and M25 Motorways, the site at Axis Park is considered a prime location for business in the UK. In consequnce two of the UK's major property development companies, MEPC and Redrew Homes sought the expertise of Intergeo to remediate the contaminated former industrial site prior to its development. Industrial use of the twenty-six hectare site, started in 1936, when Hawker Aircraft commence aircraft manufacture. In 1963 the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company purchased part of the site. Ford commenced vehicle production at the site in the mid-1970's and production was continued by Iveco Ford from 1986 to the plant's decommissioning in 1997. Geologically the site is underlain by sand and gravel, deposited in prehistory by the River Thames, with London Clay at around 6m depth. The level of groundwater fluctuates seasonally at around 2.5m depth, moving slowly southwest towards local streams and watercourses. A phased investigation of the site was undertaken, which culminated in the extensive site investigation undertaken by Intergeo in 1998. In total 50 boreholes, 90 probeholes and 60 trial pits were used to investigate the site and around 4000 solid and 1300 liquid samples were tested in the laboratory for chemical substances. The investigations identified total petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil up to 25, 000mg/kg. Diesel oil, with some lubricating oil were the main components. Volatile organic compounds were identified in the groundwater in excess of 10mg/l. Specific substances included trichloromethane, trichloromethane and tetrachloroethene. Both the oil and volatile compounds were widely spread across the site, The specific substances identified could be traced back to industrial processes used at one or other dates in the sites history Slightly elevated levels of toxic metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were also identified locally. Prior to remediation of the site and throughout its progress, extensive liaison with the regulatory authorities and the client's professional representatives was required. In addition to meetings, numerous technical documents detailing methods and health and safety issues were required in order to comply with UK environmental and safety legislation. After initially considering a range of options to undertake remediation, the following three main techniques were selected: ex-situ bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils, skimming of free floating hydrocarbon product from the water surface at wells and excavations and air stripping of volatile organic compounds from groundwater recovered from wells. The achievements were as follows: 1) 350, 000m3 of soil was excavated and 112, 000m3 of sand and gravel was processed to remove gravel and cobble sized particles; 2) 53, 000m3 of hydrocarbon contaminated soil was bioremediated in windrows ; 3) 7000m3 of groundwater was processed by skimming to remove free floating Product; 4) 196, 000m3 of groundwater was Processed by air stripping to remove volatile organic compounds. Only 1000m3 of soil left the site for disposal in licensed waste facilities Given the costs of disposal in the UK, the selected methods represented a considerable cost saving to the Clients. All other soil was engineered back into the ground to a precise geotechnical specification. The following objective levels were achieved across the site 1) By a Risk Based Corrective Action (RBCA) methodology it was demonstrated that soil with less that 1000mg/kg total petroleum hydrocarbons did not pose a hazard to health or water resources and therefore, could remain insitu; 2) Soils destined for the residential areas of the site were remediated to 250mg/kg total petroleum hydrocarbons; in the industrial areas 500mg/kg was proven acceptable. 3) Hydrocarbons in groundwater were remediated to below the Dutch Intervegtion Level of 0.6mg/1; 4) Volatile organic compounds/BTEX group substances were reduced to below the Dutch Intervention Levels; 5) Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and metals were below Inter-departmental Committee for the Redevelopment of Contaminated Land guideline levels for intended enduse. In order to verify the qualify of the work 1500 chemical test results were submitted for the purpose of validation. Quality assurance checks were undertaken by independent consultants and at an independent laboratory selected by Intergeo. Long term monitoring of water quality was undertaken for a period of one year after remediation work had been completed. Both the regulatory authorities and Clients representatives endorsed the quality of remediation now completed at the site. Subsequent to completion of the remediation work Redrew Homes constructed a prestige housing development. The properties at "Belvedere Place" retailed at premium prices. On the MEPC site the Post Office, amongst others, has located a major sorting office for the London area. Exceptionally high standards of remediation, control and documentation were a requirement for the work undertaken here.aken here.

침투량을 입력변수로 모형을 추정하였을 때, 강수량을 직접 입력자료로 사용했을 경우보다 ME(mean error), RMSE(root-mean-squre error), MAE(mean absolute error)에서 상대적으로 작은 값을 보여주고 있다.

We systematically analyze the influence of fracture junction, solute transfer characteristics on transport patterns in discrete, two-dimensional fracture network models. Regular lattices and random fracture networks with power-law length distributions are considered in conjunction with particle tracking methods. Solute transfer probabilities at fracture junctions are determined from analytical considerations and from simple complete mixing and streamline routing models. For regular fracture networks, mixing conditions at fracture junctions are always dominated by either complete mixing or streamline routing end member cases. Moreover bulk transport properties such as the spreading and the dilution of solute are highly sensitive to the mixing rule. However in power-law length networks there is no significant difference in bulk transport properties, as calculated by assuming either of the two extreme mixing rules. This apparent discrepancy between the effects of mixing properties at fracture junctions in regular and random fracture networks is explained by the statistics of the coordination number and of the flow conditions at fracture intersections. We suggest that the influence of mixing rules on bulk solute transport could be important in systematic orthogonal fracture networks but insignificant in random networks.

Infiltration and water flow in the upper soil layer of a deep water table aquifer are modeled for multistorm runoff events. The infiltration process is developed using the sharp wetting front model of Green and Ampt, and the following redistribution process is modeled using the gravity drained rectangular approximation. The Brooks-Corey model [Brooks and Corey, 1966] is adopted to relate the effective soil saturation, the tension head, and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity Firstly, the infiltration and redistribution model is developed for a single stom runoff event. Then a couple of events combined for multistorm runoff events. In the later case, infiltration rate of the second rainfall is strongly influenced by the length of the rainfall hiatus and soil moisture profile.

Two-layer aquifer system with fractional flow dimension is composed of contiguous two layers: Layer 1 (lower layer) and Layer 2 (upper layer) with different permeability and specific storage each other. For this aquifer system, we assume that groundwater flow originates only from Layer 1 on the pumping well. The aquifer system considers wellbore storage and skin effects on the pumping well. Dimensionless drawdown curves for different flow dimensions are analyzed for different lambda (λ, crossflow coefficient) values, kappa (
$textsc{k}$ , permeability ratio between Layer 1 and Layer 2) values and omega ($\omega$ , storativity ratio between Layer 1 and Layer 2) values. The curves for Layer 1 and Layer 2 show characteristic trend each other. -
The hydrogeochemical and isotopic studies on deep groundwater in the Munkyeong area, Kyeongbuk province were carried out.
$CO_2$ -rich groundwater (Ca-HC$O_3$ type) is characterized by low pH (5.8~6.5) and high TDS (up to 2,682 mg/L), while alkali groundwater (Na-HC$O_3$ type) shows a high pH (9.I~10.4) and relatively low TBS (72~116 mg/L).$CO_2$ -rich water may have evolved by$CO_2$ added at depth during groundwater circulation. This process leads to the dissolution of surrounding rocks and Ca, Na, Mg, K and HC$O_3$ concentrations are enriched. The low Pc$o_2$ (10$^{-6.4}$ atm) of alkali groundwaters seems to result from the dissolution of silicate minerals without a supply of$CO_2$ . The$\delta$ $^{18}$ O and$\delta$ D values and tritium data indicate that two types of deep groundwater were both derived from pre-thermonuclear meteoric water. The carbon Isotope data show that dissolved carbon in the$CO_2$ -rich water was possibly derived from deep-seated$CO_2$ gas. The$\delta$ $^{18}$ S values of dissolved sulfate show that sulfate reduction occurred at great depths. The application of various chemical geothermometers on$CO_2$ -rich groundwater shows that the calculated deep reservoir temperature is about 130~175$^{\circ}C$ . Based on the geological setting, water chemistry and environmental isotope data, each of the two types of deep groundwater represent distinct hydrologic and hydrogeochemical evolution at depth and their movement is controlled by the local fracture system.m. -
Column experiments were peformed to evaluate the efficiency of surfactant flushing for remediation of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in the soil under controlled conditions. In column experiment less than 0.1 % of the original mass of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), remained in the column after 15 pore volumes of 1% sorbitan monooleate solution were passed through columns. To determine the influence of soil parameters that may affect the remediation process, column tests were repeated with different values of grain size, application rate, surfactant type, surfactant concentration, and solution viscosity (polymer mixed with surfactant). Experimental works suggest that surfactant flushing has a great potential to rapidly remove mass from NAPL in the soil.

Geophysical data sets from the Chojeong area in the Chungbuk-Do are compositely studied in terms of multi-attribute interpretation for the subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones, associated with groundwater reservoir. Utilizing a GIS software, the attribute data are implemented to a database; a lineament from the satellite image, electrical resistivities and its standard deviation, radioactivity, seismic velocity, bedrock depth from exploration data. In an attempt to interpret 1-D electrical sounding data in 2-D and 3-D views, 2-D resistivities structures are firstly made by interpolating 1-D plots. Reconstruction of a resistivity volume is found to be an effective scheme for subsurface mapping of shallow fracture zones. Shallow fracture zones in the southeastern part of the study area are commonly correlated in the various exploration data.

For the last several decades, the fate of organic pollutants has been extensively studied in natural environments with emphasis on sorption and desorption phenomena. Although the mechanisms involved are not clear yet there is a consensus about the existence of hysteresis in the sorption and desorption of organic pollutants. Furthermore, it is found that hysteresis is the outcome of slow nonequilibrium sorption of organic pollutants, which results in the formation of desorption-resistant fractions of the pollutants. Desorption-resistant fractions may increase as a function of the residence time of the pollutants in the environments. Field monitoring data show a slow but continuous decline of chemicals applied to soil, followed by little or no subsequent disappearance. One plausible explanation for such resistance to biodegradation, desorption, or extraction can be attributed the gradual movement of organic pollutants to less accessible remote sites inside the matrix with time. This phenomenon has been termed sequestration or aging. The fact that some pollutants are sequestered in soil with time may have a great impact on bioremediation and risk assessment, Some portion of the resistant pollutants may still be present in the environments after bioremediation. It requires vigorous means to completely remove the aged portion that may not be further bioavailable. However, precaution should be taken since aging is not always evident. Aging seems to be soil and chemical specific.

In-situ treatment technologies have been proposed to transform or remove pollutants from contaminated groundwater. Zero-valent iron(Fe
$^{0}$ ), metallic iron, is being evaluated as a permeable reactive material to retard the transport of wide array of highly mobile contaminants in groundwater. In this research, tetrachloroethylene(PCE) dechlorination by powdered zero-valent iron in buffered aqueous solution was studied with and without the presence of surfactants. The rate of dechlorination of PCE by zero-valent iron with surfactant was much higher than without surfactant. The presence of surfactant increased the apparent rate of dechlorination because the surfactants influenced the dissolution of PCE into the aqueous phase. -
Four types of land use were selected for sampling and study with different characteristics of heavy metal contamination during the period from August 1998 to June 2000. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments settling down in a gully pot to evaluate the contamination of Pb, Zn, Cd, Co, Cr and Cu. An examination of six elements indicated that Zn, Cu and Pb were the heavy metals severely impacted by anthropogenic input in Seoul. An assessment of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban runoff and ground water was conducted based on samples collected from 31 sites and 12 wells, respectively, in Seoul City. The higher levels of alkyl benzenes in urban runoff indicated that Seoul areas were mainly contaminated through traffic sources.

Fenton-like oxidation of para-nitrophenol(PNP) was studied using hydrogen peroxide iii combination with steeler's dust substituted for ferrous iron in Fenton's reaction. Various factors critical in the degradation of PNP were studied, including hydrogen peroxide dosage, concentration of steeler's dust. and initial pH. Experimental results showed that 1,000mg/L PNP and its oxidation intermediate could be mostly decomposed within 30m1n by 10g/L steeler's dust, 0.25% hydrogen peroxide, and initila pH of 3.0. The reaction rate constant (k) of CODcr concentration were calculated with the addition of steeler's dust(0.0059 min
$^{-1}$ (g/L)$^{-1}$ ) and hydrogen peroxide(0.2965 min$^{-1}$ (%)$^{-1}$ ), respectively. -
In treatment of contaminated ground by electrokinetic remediation, pH control is the main prolllem for enhancinfi remediation efficiency. In this study, analysed pH variation characteristics according to contaminant(Pb
$^{2+}$ ) concentration and estimated remediation efficiency with organic acid to prevent precipitation in cathode due to hydroxide ion occurrence. Because most of transported Pb$^{2+}$ is precipitatecl according as pH is increased at specimen adjacent to cathode reservoir, little magnitude of Pb$^{2+}$ is flowed out of specimen.cimen. -
We performed the geotechnical experiments of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with the stabilized soil in the laboratory, proved that it is useful to use the stabilized soil as an alternative for natural clay soil. Also, for mixing adding materials in the stabilized soil, it was determined that 1) the optimal mixing ratio of cement : bentonite : stabilizing agent was 90:60:1 of mass ratio(kg) for 1㎥ with soil, 2) it was also possible to use low quality bentonite(B\circled2) classified by swelling grade because of little difference from results of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with high quality bentonite(B\circled1). According to the results of the fixation ability of heavy metals(Pb
$^{2+}$ , Cu$^{2+}$ , Cd$^{2+}$ , Zn$^{2+}$ ) with soil and additives, authors can conclude that the higher pH condition had the more removal efficiency of heavy metals. B\circled1 and cement had especially high removal efficiency of heavy metals in a whole pH because of high alkalinity.alinity. -

A field study was performed to test effectiveness of a bloluminescent genetically engineered microorganism (GEM) for bioremediation process monitoring and control. The study employed Pseudomonas fluorescens HK44 that was the first strain approved for field application in the U.S. for bioremediation purposes. HK44 contains lux gene fused within a naphthalene degradative pathway, allowing this GEM to bioluminesce as it degrades naphthalene as well as substituted naphthalenes and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) , Results showed that HK44 was maintained in both PAH-contarninated and uncontaminated soils even 660 days after inoculation. HK44 was able to produce bioluminescence in response to PAHs in soil. Although effectiveness of chemical remediation was not assessed due to heterogeneous distribution of contaminants, decreased concentration of naphthalene was shown in the soils, Taken together, HK44 was useful for in situ bioremediation process monitoring and control. This work is so far the only field release of a GEM for bioremediation purposes. -
The purpose of this study is to evaluate substrate interactions of BTEX for multicomponent. Although BTEX compounds have similar chemical structures, biodegradation of individual BTEX is different with the present of certain BTEX compounds. The biodegradation rate is order to Benzene=Toluene>Ethylbenzene> m, p-Xylene>o-Xylene. Xylenes is stimulated when benzene or toluene is present. Especially o-xylene Inhibit other BTEX compounds.

The purpose of study is to evaluate the effects of physical parameters on diesel biodegradation in diesel contaminated soil. The parameters applied are concentration, temperature, moisture contents, electron acceptor(O
$_2$ ). The results of this study showed that diesel were degraded faster at high temperature and moisture contents than at low temperature and moisture content. However concentration effect study indicates that diesel were more faster degraded at low concentration than at high concentration. The results of electron acceptor test showed concentration of oxygen did not affect the biodegradation rate of diesel in oxygen condition(10, 20%) of this study. -
Bioremediation of hazardous hydrophobic organic compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), is a major environmental concern due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties. Due to their hydrophobicity, the hydrophobic organic compounds are mainly associated with the soil organic matter or nonaqueous-phase liquids. A major question concerns the relationships between biodegradation and sorption. This work develops and utilizes a non- steady state model for evaluating the interactions between sorption and biodegradation of phenanthrene, a 3-ring PAH compound, in soil-slurry systems. The model includes sorption/desorption of a target compound, its utilization by microorganisms as a primary substrate existing in the dissolved phase and/or the sorbed phase in biomass and soil, oxygen transfer, and oxygen utilization as an electron acceptor. Biodegradation tests with phenanthrene were conducted in liquid and soil-slurry systems. The soil-slurry tests were performed with very different mass transfer rate: fast mass transfer in a flask test at 150 rpm, and slow mass transfer in a roller-bottle test at 2 rpm. In the slurry tests, phenanthrene was degraded more rapidly than in liquid tests, but with a similar rate in both slurry systems. Modeling analyses with several hypotheses indicate that a model without biodegradation of compound sorbed to the soil was not able to account for the rapid degradation of phenanthrene, particularly in the roller bottle slurry test. Reduced mass-transfer resistance to bacteria attached to the soil is the most likely phenomenon accounting for rapid sorbed-phase biodegradation.

A lab-scale slurry reactor was developed for the treatment of contaminated sediments with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (naphthalene, phenanthrene). In this system, range from 85 to 95% of PAHs with 2~3 rings were degraded within 11 days. Higher naphthalene degradation(94.05%) over phenanthrene degradation(87.07%) was probably due its higher solubility. Both compounds were not detected in aqueous phase after 7days and only 26.8% of naphthalene and 49.1% of phenanthrene were biodegraded. Removal TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) concentration in solid after 11 days of treatment was 46%.

Enhanced Phytoremediation of Trichloroethylene - Contaminated Soil by Poplar-Colonizing RecombinantsIndigenous bacteria from poplar roots (Populus mnadensis var. eugenei, 'Imperial Carolina') and Southern Californian shrub rhizospheres as well as two tree-colonizing Rhizobium strains (ATCC 10320 and 35645) were genetically engineered to express constitutively and stably toluene o-monooxygenase (TOM) from Burkholderia cepacia G4 by integrating the torn locus into the chromosome. The poplar and Rhizobium recombinants degraded trichloroethylene (TCE) at 0.8-2.1 nmol/min.mg protein (initial TCE concentration, 10u M) and competitive against the unengineered hosts in wheat and barley rhizospheres for one month (colonization at 1-23
$\times$ 10$^{5}$ CFU/cm root). In addition, six of these recombinants colonized poplar roots stably and competitively with populations as high as 79$\pm$ 12% of all rhizosphere bacteria after 28 days (0.2-31$\times$ 10$^{5}$ CFU/cm root). Furthermore, five of the most-competitive poplar recombinants (e.g., Pb3-1 and Pb5-1 which were identified as Pseudomonas PsK) retained the ability to express TOM for 29 days as 100$\pm$ 0% of the recombinants detected in the poplar rhizosphere had constitutive expression of TOM. -
The influence of adsorption on cadmium toxicity to soil microorganisms in smectite-rich soils and sediments was quantified as a function of solution and sorbent characteristics. Adsorption and surface complexation experiments were conducted to infer Cd sorption mechanisms to a reference smectite and three fractions of a Veritsol soil, and to elucidate the effects of the surface complexation on Cd bioavailability and toxicity in soils and sediments. Cadmium adsorption isotherms conformed to the Langmuir adsorption model, with adsorptive capacities of the different samples dependent on their characteristics. Equilibrium geochemical modeling (MINTEQA2) was used to predict the speciation of Cd in the soil suspensions using Langmuir and Triple Layer surface complexation models. The influence of adsorption and surface complexation on cadmium toxicity to soil microorganisms was assessed indirectly through the relative change in microbial hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) as a function of total Cd concentration and sorbent characteristics. Adsorption decreased the toxicity of Cd to soil microorganisms. Inner-sphere complexation is more effective than outer-sphere complexation in reducing the bioavailability and toxicity of heavy metals in soils and sediments.

Since trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene (DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) arise from anaerobic degradation of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and TCE, there is interest in creating aerobic remediation systems that avoid the highly toxic VC and cis-DCE which predonominate in anaerobic degradation. However, it seemed TCE could not be degraded aerobically without an inducing compound (which also competitively inhibits TCE degradation). It has been shown that TCE induces expression of both the toluene dioxygenase of p. putida F1 as well as toluene-p-monooxygenase of P.mendocina KRI. We investigated here the ability of PCE, TCE, and chlorinated phenols to induce toluene-o-xylene monooxygenase (ToMO) from P.stutzeri OX1. ToMO has a relaxed regio-specificity since it hydroxylates toluene in the ortho, meta, and para positions; it also has a broad substrate range as it oxidizes o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, toluene, benzene, ethylbenzene, styrene, and naphthalene; chlorinated compounds including TCE, 1, 1-DCE, cis-DCE, trans-DCE, VC, and chloroform : as well as mixtures of chlorinated aliphatics (Pseudomonas 1999 Maui Meeting). ToMO is a multicomponent enzyme with greatest similarity to the aromatic monooxygenases of Burkholderia pickettii PKO1 and P.mendocina KR1. Using P.sturzeri OX1, it was found that PCE induces P.mendocina KR1 Using P.situtzeri OX1, it was found that PCE induces ToMO activity measured as naphthalene oxygenase activity 2.5-fold, TCE induces 2.3-fold, and toluene induces 3.0 fold. With the mutant P.stutzeri M1 which does not express ToMO, it was also found there was no naphthalene oxygenate activity induced by PCE and TCE; hence, PCE and TCE induce the tow path. Using P.putida PaW340(pPP4062, pFP3028) which has the tow promoter fused to the reporter catechol-2, 3-dioxygenase and the regulator gene touR, it was determined that the tow promoter was induced 5.7-, 7.1-, and 5.2-fold for 2-, 3-, 4-chlorophenol, respectively (cf. 8.9-fold induction with o-cresol) : however, TCE and PCE did not directly induce the tou path. Gas chromatography and chloride ion analysis also showed that TCE induced ToMO expression in P.stutzeri OX1 and was degraded and mineralized. This is the first report of significant PCE induction of any enzyme as well as the first report of chlorinated compound induction of the tou operon. The results indicate TCE and chlorinated phenols can be degraded by P.stutzeri OX1 without a separate inducer of the tou pathway and without competitive inhibition.

As a bench-scale study, transformation of nitrate to nitrogen gas under anoxic condition was determined by using autotrophic denitrifiers containing Thiobacillus denitrificans and elemental sulfur as an electron donor. The research objective is to measure the basic kinetic parameters of autotrophic denitrification reaction on the removal efficiency of nitrate. The results showed that nitrate was almost completely transformed to nitrite in the first 4 days of column operation. After 2 days of accumulation of nitrite, its concentration slowly decreased and the compound was detected less than 0.5 mg/L in 14 days. In the experiment, sulfate concentration in the effluent was the 70~90 mg-S/L and the pH was maintained around pH 7.5. When nitrate concentration of bank filtrate in the real field is considered, this sulfate concentration seems to be acceptable. At 17 cm from the bottom of the column, the effluent showed the highest nitrite concentration, and nitrate concentration decreased rapidly to the Point of 33 cm from the bottom. The results suggest that an appropriate thickness of permeable reactive barriers is about 30 cm.

Multi-regression statistical analyses were applied for the water quality data of shallow alluvial ground water (n = 47) collected from the Youngdeok area, in order to quantitatively generalize the natural (non-anthropogenic) causes of regional water quality variation. Seven samples having the high contamination index (
$C_{a}$ > 3) reflect the striong effects by anthropogenic activity. Most of the alluvial groundwaters have acquired their quality primarily due to the dissolution of carbonate minerals. The results of multi-regression analysis show that chlorine is mainly derived from seawater effect. Sulfur isotopic compositions of dissolved sulfur and the S$O_4$ /Cl ratio also enable us to discriminate the samples (n = 18) which are affected by atmospheric input of marine aerosol (sea-spray) and also by mixing between freshwater and seawater. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope data of the samples collected lie close to the local meteoric water line obtained from nearby Pohang city but has lower slope (5.45) on the$\delta$ D-$^{18}$ O plot, indicating that alluvial groundwater was recharged from infiltrated meteoric water which has undergone some degree of kinetic evaporation. The estimated initial isotopic composition of the recharged water ($\delta$ D = -74.8$^{0}$ /$_{00}$ ,$\delta$ $^{18}$ O = -10.8$^{[-1000]}$ /$_{[-1000]}$ ) suggests that the alluvial ground water recharge largely occurs during summer storm events.s.s. -
Na, Cl, NO$_3$ , SO$_4$ , Ni, Pb, Se -
In this paper, the results of the direct shear interface friction test is introduced to understand interface friction between geosynthetic materials that are required for analyzing slope stability of the liner system of waste landfills. Tensile stresses that occur in a liner system due to differential settlement with waste load are estimated using FLAC. It was shown that HDPE/geocomposite inteface friction angle is 11.9
$^{\circ}$ , HDPE/wastes is 12.0$^{\circ}$ and geotextile/wastes is 28.0$^{\circ}$ . Tensile stress due to settlement in a foundation of landfill is well within the limits of tensile strength regulated by waste treatment law. -

Geophysical surveys (electrical resistivity, self-potential, and magnetic methods) and streamwater sample analysis have been carried out at a site of tailings of waste deposits in an abandoned mine, Jangpoong, which is situated in Kowesan-Gun, Chungbuk-Do. The research was aimed at investigating the suitability of the various geophysical methods for detection of AMD (acid mine drainage) paths, and ultimately mapping of preferred AMD flow channels by incorporating the water sample analysis. Electrical resistivity section from the dipole-dipole line represents the low-resistivity zone trending northwest toward the stream nearby. The positions of the resistivity anomalies for AMD channels are well correlated to the ones from the various geophysical surveys. In addition they correspond to the sites of the higher peaks for the pH, EC, heavy metal content for the water sample data.

In order to estimate spatial physicochemical properties of the spring waters in the study area, spring waters at 57 sites were investigated for measuring ten items (temperature, pH, Eh, EC, TDS, DO, salinity, alkalinity, discharge rate, and surface elevation), To compare each component with one another, regression analysis was carried out. Kriging was used to estimate the spatial characteristics and continuity of data in the study area. To solve kriging equation, the semivariogram was calculated using geostatistical software GS
$^{+}$ (version 3.1). As a result of semivariogram analysis, the data of nine components but surface elevation could be assumed as stationary random function, and ordinary kriging method was used for making contour maps.s. -
To understand the gaseous behaviour of volatile organic compounds in the unsaturated zone, their volatilization coefficient k
$_{Lg}$ is evaluated. An experiment is conducted to examine the dependence of k$_{Lg}$ on the concentration of the dissolution, presence of unsaturated zone and depth of the unsaturated zone. The results show that the volatilization coefficient is not dependent on the concentration under the constant temperature and pressure. It is also find that k$_{Lg}$ depends on the presence of the unsaturated zone rather than its depth.depth. -
We have developed the computer system with MOCT which is called "The Integrated National Groundwater Information system" since 1995 and now begin to supply the database and related informations for ground water by internet homepage. The integrated system is composed of four sub systems which are "Groundwater Information System", "DUREBAK", "Hydrogeologic Map Management System" and "Groundwater World Homepage". The local government offices use the "DUREBAK" program to manage the well development and maintenance. About 1,000,000 wells are managed in "DUREBAK" program and they submit the well database to MOCT every year. And now everyone can obtain the well data and other informations through internet homepage. We have set the standard process of data acquisition and management for ground water last four years.s of data acquisition and management for ground water last four years.

The effect of the presence of dissolved organic matters(DOM) on the binding of phenanthrene to cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC) coated sand was investigated. The distribution coefficient of phenanthrene increased with increase of sufactant coverage, and decreased with the presence of dissolved organic matters except for the 1.600mg/g coverage case. Both Aldrich humic acid and extracted dissolved organic matter showed the similar tendency. For the quantification of the overall distribution coefficient, this study presented mass distribution model and estimated the sorption equilibrium coefficients of hydrophobic organic compounds(HOCs) in multi system. The suggested model combined a series of sorption equilibrium relationships including the adsorption of DOMs on sorbents, the binding between HOCs and DOMs, and the sorption of HOCs on sorbents with or without DOMs.

Surfactants have been extensively considered for decontamination of the subsurface polluted with hydrophobic organic compounds. Enhanced solubilization of naphthalene and phenanthrene in surfactant solution of SDDBS, MADS12 and DADS12 was studied for single compounds and their binary mixture. The order of increasing solubility enhancement of naphthalene and phenanthrene is SDDBS < MADS12 < DADS12. The solubility enhancement of phenanthrene is more than that of naphthalene because of the higher hydrophobicity. A synergistic effect on the solubilization of two PAHs was observed in the presence of another PAH.

After kaolin clay was compulsorily contaminated with Co
$^{2+}$ ion, the remediation characteristics by electrokinetic method were analyzed. Ethanoic buffer was injected in the soil column and$CH_3$ COOH was continuously inputted in cathode reservoir to restrain the pH elevation. Since pH of the cathode side of the soil column was 4.0 at initial and was restrained by 6.5 at 43.6 hours, Precipitation, Co(OH)$_2$ , was not formed in the column. Effluent rate increased with time passage and remediation in the column in initial time was mainly controlled by ion migration. 13.1% of total in the soil column was remediated in 10 hours, and the 6.8% of total in 20.8 hours, and the 71.7% of total in 43.6 hours, and the 94.6% of total in 43.6 hours. Meanwhile, the residual concentrations in the column calculated by the developed model were similar to those by experiment.t. -
Heavy metals are extracted from Chonju stream sediment, roadside soils and sediments along Honam expressway, soils and tailings from mining area using partial ectraction in Standard Method, partial ectraction method with maintaining 0.1N of extraction solution and acid digestion. In samples having buffer capacity against acid, 0.1N of extraction solution can not be maintained and pH of extraction solution increases up to 8.0 when partial extraction in Standard Method is used. The averages and ranges of (heavy metals extracted using partial extraction in standard method, HPE)/(heavy metals extracted using partial extraction method with maintaining 0.1N of extraction solution, HPEM) values are 0.506 and 0.145~1.126 in Cd, 0.534~ and 0.078~0.928 in Zn, 0.461 and 0.041~1.715 in Mn, 0.359 and 0.011~0.874 in Cu, 0.195 and 0.018~1.785 in Cr, 0.710 and 0.003~3.075 in Pb, and 0.088 and 1.73
$\times$ 10$^{-5}$ ~0.303 in Fe. These data indicate that the difference between HPE and HPEM is big in the order of Fe, Cr, Cu, Mn, Cd, Zn and Pb. It is quite possible that the partial extraction method in Standard Method of soil in Korea is not adequate for an assessment of contamination in area where buffer capacity of soil will be decreased or lost after a long term exposure of soils to environmental damage. -
Heavy metals are extracted from stream sediments, roadside soils and sediments and soils and tailings from mining area using partial extraction, acid digestion and HF-digestion. Compared to amounts of heavy metals extracted using partial extraction, those extracted using acid digestion are higher by 2.0∼220.9 times in Cu, 2.4∼2806.1 times in Pb, 1.3∼121 times in Cd, 14.1∼1300885 times in Fe, 1.2∼271.5 times in Mn, 1.3∼372.5 times in Zn, 2.2∼1734.5 times in Cr. Although partial extraction, which extracts less amounts of heavy metals from soil compared to acid digestion, is used in domestic standard method for examination of soil, domestic soil standard for heavy metals in non-agricultural and industrial areas is higher than soil standard in foreign countries which use acid digestion, For improvement of the domestic standard method for assessment of soil, it is suggested to lower the domestic soil standard for heavy metals or to change pretreatment method for extracting heavy metals from partial extraction to acid digestion with modifying the soil standard.

In case of applying electrokinetic remediation, magnitude of electric current is one of major factors for estimation of contaminant transport. In practice, electric current provide determination of electric conductivity based on specimen resistance. Electric current variation is produced during Electrokinetic remediation test. Electric current is decreased by expotential function according to time in condition of constant voltage. This can be interpreted as precipitation effect by OH
$^{-10}$ generation in a cathode. -
