In an attempt to explore the effect of Ginseng on the permeability of the biological membrane to cations we have investigated the effect of Ginseng-alcohol extract on the transport of $Na^+$ human red blood cell preprations. The $Na^+$ influx was measured in intact red cells using $^{22}Na$ as a tracer and the efflux in reseated red cells using $^{24}Na$ as a tracer. 1. The influx of $Na^+$ was not apparently changed by the Ginseng-alcohol extract of 20mg% in the incubation medium. 2. Similarly, 20mg% Ginseng-alcohol extract in the cellular space did not alter the efflux of $Na^+$ from the cell. However, 50mg% of Ginseng-alcohol extract in the cell resulted in a significant increase in the $Na^+$ efflux and this effect was magnified when the cell was suspended in the medium containing the Ginseng-alcohol extract in a concentration of 20mg %. The results suggest that Ginseng-alcohol extract over 50mg% increase permeability of red blood cell membrane to $Na^+$ by altering the membrane integrity.

The present study was undertaken to investigate effects of ethanol extracts of acorn (QAEE) on arterial blood Pressure and respiration, to find out the mechanism of depressor activity of QAEE,. add to determine lethal dosages of QAEE in rabbits and dogs. The results obtained were as follows: 1) After administration of 20 mg/Kg, 30 mg/kg, and 40 mg/kg of QAEE into rabbits the maximum depressor responses observed were respectively $16.3{\pm}1.4\;mmHg$, $28.7{\pm}2.0\;mmHg$ and $45.6{\pm}3.1\;mmHg$, while mean depressor responses following administration of 40mg/kg, 60mg/kg and 80mg/kg of QAEE into dogs were $32.2{\pm}1.6\;mmHg$, $39.5{\pm}1.5\;mmHg$, and $47.0{\pm}1.6\;mmHg$ respectively 2) Genenally depressor responses increased in proportion to dosage of QAEE administered whereas at same dosage of QAEE depressor responses were greater in rabbit than in dog. 3) It is suggested that depressor activity of QAEE resides mostly in its activity to activate vagus nerves and partly in Its activity to block beta-rceptors. 4) The lethal dosages of QAEE were 50 mg/kg to 60mg/kg for rabbi hue 90mg/kg to 100 mg/kg for dogs. 5) After QAEE administration respiratory rates were generally increased in the rabbit and the dog.

The action of ascorbic acid on the sodium Plus potassium activated ATPase activity in the rabbit red cell membrane has been investigated and the experiments were also designed to determine the mechanism of action if ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity The following results were observed. 1. The activity of the NaK ATPase from red cell membrane is stimulated by ascorbic acid and the concentration of ascorbic acid for maximal activity is about 8 mM. 2. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activaty, with a given concentration of sodium in the medium, is increased by raisins the potassium concentration but activity ratio is decreased. 3. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity, with a given concentration of potassium in the medium, is increased by raising the sodium concentration but activity ratio is decreased. 4. The action of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity is stimulated by calcium ions and activity ratio is increased by raising the calcium concentration. 5. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity was not related to the sulfhydryl group of cysteine or the hydroxyl group of threonine. 6. The activating effect of ascorbic acid on the ATPase activity is due to amino group and carboxyl group of the enzyme of NaK ATPase.

The action of theobromine on the sodium plus potassium activated ATPase activity In the rabbit red cell membrane has teen investigated and the experiments were also designed to determine the mechanism of action of theobromine on the ATPase activity. The following results were observed. 1. The activity of the NaK ATPase from red fell membrane is stimulated by theobromine, and the concentration of theobromine for maximal activity is about 3mM. 2. The activating effect of theobromine on the ATPase, with a given concentration of potassium in the medium, is increased by raising the sodium concentration but activity ratio is decreased. 3. The activating effect of theobromine on the ATPase, with a given concentration of sodium in the medium. is increased by the raising the potassium concentration but activity ratio is decreased. 4. The NaK ATPase activity is increased by small amounts of calcium but decreased by larger amounts. The activity of the enzyme by theobromine is increased by small amounts of calcium but decreased by larger amounts. 5. The activating effect of theobromine on the ATPase was not related to the hydroxyl group of threonine and imidazole group of histicline. 6. The activating effect of theobromine on the ATPase is due to sulfhydryl group, amino group and carboxyl group of the enzyme of NaK ATPase.

경사대에 의한 수등적체위 변화시 분시 호흡수, 혈액 pH, $PCO_2$ 및 $PO_2$의 변화를 관찰하고 다음과 같은 성적을 얻었다. 체위변화시 호흡수는 기립위에서는 수평대조치에 비해 감소하고 도립위에서는 많은 증가를 보였다. 혈액 pH는 기립위에서 수평대조치에 비해 동맥혈은 0.2%가 증가되었고 정맥혈은 0.3%가 감소하였다. 도립위에서는 수평대조치와 거의 변화가 없는 값을 나타내었다. $PCO_2$는 기립위에서 수평대조치에 비해 동맥혈은 8.3%, 정맥혈은 0.3%가 감소되었고 도립위에서는 동맥혈은 20.1%가 감소되고 이것은 통계적으로 의의있는 변화였다. 정맥혈은 7%가 감소되었다. $PO_2$는 기립위에서 동맥혈은 2%가 증가, 정맥혈은 21.7%가 감소되었으며 이것은 통계적으로 의의있는 변화였다. 도립위에서는 동맥혈은 11.4%가 증가되고 정맥혈은 14.1%가 감소되었다. 도립위에서 동맥혈의 $PO_2$가 증가 되는 원인은 도립중의 과도호흡하에 의한 것이라 사료되며 정맥혈의 $PO_2$의 감소는 도립중의 근육수축에 연유하는 산소소비량의 증가가 그 원인이라고 사료된다. 또 도립위에서 $PO_2$가 감소하고 수소ion의 감소가 예상됨에도 불구하고 pH가 증가하지 않는것은 산소소비가 증가되고 정맥혈의 $PO_2$가 감소되는 것으로 봐서 염기성해당으로 젖산이 증가된것이 아닌가 생각된다.
