Objective : This study was carried out to investigate the effects of DDT on the brain damage and hypertension. Methods : We observed the effect of Dodamtang(DDT) extract on KCN-induced coma, focal brain ischemia by MCA occlusion, cytotoxicity and protection of PC12 cells and B103 cells induced by amyloid ${\beta}$ protein(25-35). To prove the effect of DDT as a blood pressure depressant, we measured aldosterone, renin activity, catecholamine, sodium and NO density using the seperated blood plasma. Results : DDT showed a protective effect on cytotoxicity of PC12 cells and B103 cells induced by amyloid ${\beta}$ protein(25-35) in a dose dependent manner and proved the significant abridgement of brain ischemic area and edema induced by MCA occlusion, a critical decrease of neurologic deficitic grade in the fore-limbs. DDT didn't reduce the duration of KCN(1.87mg/kg iv.)-induced coma and prolonged the survival rate in the case of KCN(3.0mg/kg iv.)-induced coma by the ratio of 20%. While DDT increased the value of NO in SHR, it significantly decreased the blood pressure of SHR and the value of aldosterone& epinephrine in SHR. Conclusions : These results suggested that DDT might be usefully applied for treatment of hypertension, cerebral infarction, and brain damage.

Objective : Recently many studies of herbal medication to promote growth have been implemented. The purpose of this study was to identify the feasibility and safety of herbal medication on short stature. Methods : 143 patients(87 males, 56 Females)who visited with short stature at Kangnam CHA Oriental Hospital From February 1999 to January 2000 and were treated during 6 months, were available for this study. We treated with 5 herbal medications.(Soeumin hyangbujapalmultang-gagambang, Soyangin yukmijihwangtang-gagambang, Taeumin chungsimyunjatang-gagambang, Boa-tang, Boikyangwi tang) At the begining of the treatment and after 6 months treatment, We measured height, weight and body mass index(BMI). And we investigated changes of aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), blood urea nitrogen(BUN), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), creatinine. Results: The distribution of ages was from 5 years old to 17 years old. After herbal treatment, mean height, mean weight, mean BMI and mean percentile grade increased $138.5{\pm}15.6$ to $141.9{\pm}15.1$, from $36.9{\pm}13.2$ to $38.9{\pm}13.2$, from $18.5{\pm}3.29$ to $18.7{\pm}3.21$, from $3.2{\pm}1.2$ to $3.4{\pm}1.2$. The contents of AST, ALT, BUN, ALP and Creatinine were not showed any significant change. Conclusions : In the results We recognized Short stature was showed prominent feasibility and safety of herbal medication. Herbal Medication in patients with short stature will improve height velocity without liver and kidney function disorders.

Objectives : In order to study the effect of oriental medical therapy on chronic prostatitis patient, the change of WBC counts on expressed prostatic secretion(EPS) was investigated. Methods : Chronic prostatitis patient who had been diagnosed by EPS test was re-tested as same way after improvement of symptom And then we investigated the change of WBC counts on EPS according to therapeutic period, age, usual habit, herb medicine and symptom of each patient, and his and his sexual partner's past history of STD or UTI. Results : According to the change of WBC counts on EPS, improvement rate was 83.3%, cure rate was 46.7%. The youth who didn't have the usual habit of enduring ejaculation during sexual intercourse, enduring urination and sitting long time a day was improved well. Conclusions : According to the above results, it is suggested that oriental medical therapy is effective to the change of WBC counts on EPS.

Objectives : To improve decreased erectile function as well as impotence, caused by physical fatigue, psychologic stress, too much alcohol and smoking, medication like antihypertensives, and geriatric change, by the prescription of BOWONDAN. Methods : 18 male-volunteers with decreased erectile function who are married 30 to 59 years old, were studied about the difference of a sexual function between before and after taking BOWONDAN 3 pills a day for a month. The results of IIEF(International Index of Erectile Function) and AVSS(Audio-Visual Sexual Stimulation) were reviewed statistically with paired samples t-test. Results : Based on the IIEF, 13(81.25%, p<0.01), 9(56.25%, p<0.05), 9(56.25%, p<0.05), 9(56.25%, p<0.05), 7(43.75%, p<0.05) and 15(93.75%, p<0.01) volunteers were improved in erectile function, orgasmic function, sexual desire, intercourse satisfaction, overall satisfaction and total score respectively, among 16 volunteers excluding 2 due to a false measurement. Through the Rigiscan of AVSS, 11 (68.75%, p<0.1)volunteers were improved in base tumescence, among 16 volunteers excluding 2 due to a false measurement. Conclusions : As a result of our work, BOWONDAN is expected to take effect to treat or improve both impotence and decreased erectile function.

목적: 고양이 대뇌피질 절편을 사용하여 저산소 발작을 유발한 뒤, 성향정기산이 세포의 이온 환경과 대사의 변화와 관련하여 어떤 영향을 미치는지 연구하였다. 방법: 고양이의 대뇌 피질 절편에 저산소 발작을 유발한 뒤 flame photometry scintillation, Spectrophotometry, method of Jorgensen and Skou, method of Fiske and Subbarow, oxygen monitor, luciferin-luciferase assay 등을 이용하여 세포내 이온함량과 세포대사를 측정하였다. 결과: 성향정기산은 저산소증으로 유발된 세포내의 $K^+$와 $Na^+$의 함량의 변화를 현저하게 지연시켰다. 성향정기산은 Na-K-ATPase의 억제제인 와바인 또는 대사억제제인 2.4-DNP로 유발된 세포내 $K^+$함량의 변화에 어떤 효과도 보이지 않았다. 또한, 정상 상태의 절편뿐만 아니라 저산소 상태의 절편에서 분리된 과립체의 분설에 있어서 Na-K-ATPase의 활동도에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 성향정기산은 저산소 발작하에서 산소 소비량과 세포의 ATP함량이 떨어지는 것을 현저하게 막았다. 또한 ATP를 생산하는 기능을 보호하는 저산소 조직의 사립체를 돕는데 효과적이었다. 결론: 성향정기산은 대뇌 조직의 저산소 발작하에서 세포의 이온 환경과 대사를 보호하는 유익한 효과가 있음을 알 수 있다.

Objectives: Obesity is regarded as the aggregation of needless risk factors, for instance, cardiovascular disease, joint disease, induce cancer. We studied on interrelation between abnormal liver function and obesity. Methods: We analyzed liver function, T.Cholesterol, Triglyceride before and after lose weight treatment. The collateral condition is over 6 weeks period on obesity treatment, no liver injury and no complicated another disease on personal past history and found out abnormal impression on biochemical liver function blood test. Results: The improvement rate of LFT, compare with before treatment is 10.6% in T.Bilirubin, 11.1% in ALP, 21% in AST, 38% in ALT, 37.3% in r-GTP, 9.2% in LDH and decreased 2.7% in T.Protein, increased 2.3% in Albumin. Hyperlipidemia is 19.4% in T.Cholesterol, 42.5% in Triglyceride. Conclusions: LFT and Hyperlipidemia of abnormal liver function patients, caused by obesity, is improved to normal limit in proportion to reduce patient's weight.

Objectives : This study was carried out to examine toxic effect of Sintongchukeo-tang on cultured mouse spinal sensory neurons inhibited by neurotoxicity induced by hydrogen peroxide. Methods : MTT assay, NR assay, LDH and neurofilament assay were performed after spinal sensory neurons were preincubater with various concentrations of Sintongchukeo-tang water extract before treatment of cells with hydrogen peroxide. Results : Hydrogen peroxide induced ceil degeneration such as the decrease of cell viability was measured by MTT and NR assay in the cultured mouse spinal sensory neurons. Sintongchukeo-tang water extract was effective in the decrease of LDH activities of neurons produced by hydrogen peroxide. Sintongchukeo-tang water extract was effective in the increase of amount of neurofilaments damaged by hydrogen peroxide. Conclusions : From the above results, it is suggested that hydrogen peroxide induces the inhibition of cell viability in cultured mouse spinal sensory neurons and Sintongchukeo-tang water extract was effective in cultured neurons damaged by hydrogen peroxide.

Objective : Cold hypersensitivity is excessive sensitivity of each body part. particularly limbs and low backs, but sometimes it affects upper abdomen region in G-I trouble patients. Methods : We conducted this research on 69 patients who came and took the both exam of gastroscopy and D.I.T.I. in kangnam korean hospital kyung hee university. So, we researched the significance of temperature deviations on upper abdomen which was studied separately by gastritis group, digestive function group and H. pylori group. Results and Conclusion : The temperature deviation of Zhongwan(Ren12)-Danzhong(Ren17) of gastritis group and indigestive patients was significant, it means that patients who have severe gastritis and indigestion have more significant cold hypersensitivity in upper abdomen. The temperature deviation of Zhongwan(Ren12)-Danzhong(Ren17) of H.pylori positive patients in H.pylori group was not significant. The clinical relationship or tendency was not found both between H.pylori group and gastritis group and between H.pylori group and digestive function group.

Objective: This study was carried out to investigate the correlation between prognosis and differential temperature of Digital infrared Thermographic Imaging in Bell's palsy. Methods: The clinical data and thermographic images were analyzed on 50 cases of Bell's palsy who were treated ambulatory in Dong-so oriental hospital from October 2000 to May 2001 And 32case were selected who underwent thermographic imaging within 7days of onset. Results: There was no statistic significance between ${\Delta}T$ and the length of treatment, but the length of treatment tends to grow as ${\Delta}T$ increased. The length of treatment was shortest in normal thermal pattern, followed by hyperthermal and hypothermal. Conclusions: According to the results, there was a tendency that ${\Delta}T$ value is proportional to treatment days, although it is not significant statistically.

The efficacy of Sagunja-tang and Sagunja-tang plus Mylabris phalerata against the human stomach cancer was examined and molecular biological fight of its actions was studied. In the efficacy test of anti-stomach cancer cells growth using the MTT assay, administration of Sagunja-tang resulted in no significant change of stomach cancer cells growth, with the control group. Administration of Sagunja-tang plus Mylabris phalerata resulted in a decrease of stomach cancer cells growth in proportion to the concentration of mylabris phalerata and time, which was significantly different from the control group(significance recognized when p<0.05). In the test using the apoptosis assay, administration of Sagunja-tang showed an increase in apoptosis of human stomach cancer cells, with no significant difference from the control group. Administrating Sagunja-tang plus Mylabris phalerata showed an increase in apoptosis of stomach cancer cells in proportion to the concentration of mylabris phalerata and time, which was significantly different from the control group(significance recognized when p<0.05). In the test using the quantitative RT-PCR to examine stomach cancer cells growth and revelation of apoptosis related genes, administrating Sagunja-tang plus Mylabris phalerata resulted in a decrease of Bcl-2, an anti-apoptosis gene, in proportiong to concentration. No significant change was examined in the revelation of CDK1, Cdc2, Cyclin D1, PCNA, c-myc, which are genes related to the stomach cancer cells growth, and Bax, Bel-XL, the genes related to apoptosis, and p53. Referring to the results above, Sagunja-tang plus Mylabris phalerata may be considered to have an anti-growth efficacy against human stomach cancer cells, and an inducement efficacy. Therefore, it can be clinically implemented in the human stomach cancer.

Objective: This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract on indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions of mice. Methods: To evaluate the effects of Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract and Misoprostol, the morphology of gastric mucosa, and the distribution of mucose cells, PNA(Peanut Agglutinin), ICAM(intercellular adhesion molecule), and apoptotic cells were observed. Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract and Misoprostol were intragastric injected to the test groups at hour 72 before and just before indomethacin treatment(HYT-J, HYT-72, M-J, M-72), while the INDO group was injected only with indomethacin and the control group was subcutaneously injected only with saline. Results: The gastric mucosal lesions incresed in the fundus and body of INDO group, but softened in HYT group and M group, the effects were more excellent in the HYT-72, M-72 groups than the HYT-J, M-J groups and in the HYT group than M group. The disappearance of surface and neck mucose cells were shown in INDO group, but softened in HYT group and M group. The mucosal configuration of HYT-72 group was the same as control group. The numerical increase of PNA positive reaction in cytoplasm of perietal cells were appeared in INDO group. The PNA positive reaction in HYT group and Miso-group were shown in surface mucous cells and microvilli of apical surface in chief cells as control group, and were the same as control group in all mucosa of HYT-72 group. The distribution of ICAM positive cells, increased in INDO group, but decreased in M-72 group, and were the same as control group in HYT-72 group. The apoptotic cells, increased noticeably in gastric mucosa of INDO group, decreased in HYT group and M group, and decreased noticeably in HYT-72 group. Conclusions: Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract had excellent effects on indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions.

Objectives : We aimed to identify the dose-dependent inhibitory effects of Cheonsagunja-tang(喘四君子湯), leech(Hirudo medicinalis/水蛭) roasted with Ephedrae Herba(麻黃) on the mRNA expression of IL-6, IL-16, GM-CSF involved in the asthma model. Methods : In the study BEAS-2B cell lines, human epithelial cells were used. These cells were stimulated with tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-${\alpha}$ for artificial inflammatory expression. ${\beta}$-actin messenger RNA(mRNA) was used by internal standard. After 24 hours of the Cheonsagunja-tang, leech-treatment, total cellular RNAs were collected treating RNA zol directly on the living cells. Then the transcriptional activities of IL-6, 16 and GM-CSF were measured by RT-PCR with electrophoresis. Results: In the Cheonsagunja-tang study, the mRNA expression of IL-6 showed 30% transcriptional inhibitory effect compared to the control group in the $100{\mu}l/ml$ category(p<0.005). In the IL-16, there was 26%, 31% and 31% transcriptional inhibitory effect compared to the control groups in the $4{\mu}l/ml$, $20{\mu}l/ml$ and $100{\mu}l/ml$ categories, respectively(p<0.05). In the GM-CSF, the experimental group had 56% transcriptional inhibitory effect compared to the control group in the $100{\mu}l/ml$ category(p<0.001). In other concentrations, there was no inhibitory effect. In the leech study, the mRNA expression of IL-6 showed 37% transcriptional inhibitory effect compared to the control group in the $100{\mu}l/ml$ category(p<0.001). In the IL-16, there was 63% and 67% transcriptional inhibitory effect compared to the control groups in the $20{\mu}/ml$ and $100{\mu}/ml$ categories, respectively(p<0.001). In the GM-CSF, there was 64% and 68% transcriptional inhibitory effect compared to the control groups in the $20{\mu}l/ml$ and $100{\mu}l/ml$ categories, respectively(p<0.001). In other concentrations, there was no inhibitory effect. Conclusions : This study shows that Cheonsagunja-tang and leech roasted with Ephedrae Herba have dose-dependent inhibitory effects on the mRNA expression of IL-6, IL-16 and GM-CSF in BEAS-2B cell lines, human epithelial cells.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Gamichunggan-san(Jiaweiqinggan-san) on 25 patients who have suffered from alcoholic liver disease. Methods: Gamichunggan-san(Jiaweiqinggan-san) was administered to patients for over 1 months continuously. We checked improvement of clinical symptoms, changes of chemistry hematological test and especially lymphocyte count. Results: The results obtained are summarized as follows. Gamichunggan-san(Jiaweiqinggan-san) has significant effect on the improvement of clinical symptoms. And the improvement ratio of AST, ALT, ${\gamma}$-GTP was 77.8%, 61.5%, 76.2%. In patients with alcohoiic hepatitis, WBC was increased effectively within normal range and those with liver cirrhosis, All of the patients with the inverted ratio of lymphocyte was improved. Conclusions: From the above results, it is suggested that Gamichunggan-san(Jiaweiqinggan-san) have significant effects on recovery of liver malfunction and immune modulation, and also could be recommended as a prescription for alcoholic liver disease.

Objectives: We examined if their hematological status could be changed by blood loss in patients treated with bleeding pressure therapy. Methods: The patients were divided into two groups as follows: The Subject group(B) were 42 cases treated with bleeding pressure therapy. The Control group(N) were 43 cases treated with negative bleeding pressure therapy, We checked CBC & differ cell count of two groups. Results: The means of RBC, Hb count and Hct were slightly decreased after 1 week. but they were recovered after 2 weeks. Conclusions: These results indicate that Bleeding Pressure Therapy don't reduced RBC, Hb count and Hct in Patients.

Objective : Infrared thermal image is usually utilized for the diagnotic value of verious disease. We investigated the penile temperature of erectile dysfunction patient. Methods : We mesured the thermal difference of penile infrared thermal image in erectile dysfunction patient group and control group. Results : 1. Patient group's thermal degree is lower than Control group's in Kwanwon, Left scrotum, medial part of thigh. 2. The Kwanwon's temperature is especially showed lower than other mesured point's in erectile dysfunction patient group. Conclusion : According to the above results, it could be suggested that penile infrared image help us diagnostic value of erectile dysfunction patient.

Objective : Stroke is the most frequent cause of death in Korea. Because it remains severe disablities disturbing normal life, it is important to carry out intervention preventing from progression of condition in patients with acute ischemic stroke within therapeutic time window. Thus early thrombolysis is beneficial for patients with acute ischemic stroke. However its therapeutic efficacy is not known in combination with oriental medical therapy. In this study, we investigated the safety and the clinical effect of continous intravenous urokinase therapy and oriental medical therapy. Methods : Twenty eight patients with acute onset of ischemic stroke no later than three days received continous infusion of urokinase and oriental medical therapy. We estimated the subjects's neurological deficit and functional status with National institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke Scale(NIHSS) and Europian Stroke Scale (ESS) prior to therapy, on day 3, 7, 14 after the starting urokinase therapy and on day at discharge. Results: After day 7, the scores of NIHSS and ESS were improved significantly. There are no differences in therapeutic effects of the interval between onset of stroke and initiation of therapy. Complication were noted in four(14%) patients, but these are not fatal complication and make no neurological deficiency. Conclusion : The results of these investment suggest that continuous intravenous urokinase with oriental medical therapy could be a safe and effective intervention to prevent from progression in acute ischemic stroke. But this findings should be confirmed in multicenter double blind controlled trial.

Angiogenesis is a fundamental process in reproduction and wound healing. Under these condition, neovascularization is tightly regulated. Unregulated angiogenesis may lead to several angiogenic diseases, and is thought to be indispensible for solid tumor growth and metastsis. The construction of new vascular network is a multistep cascade involving basement membrane degradation, endothelial cell proliferation, endothelial cell migration, and tube formation. Newly reported anti-angiogenic agents in oriental medical field have targeted both specific and multistep stages in the angiogenic process. From recent approach in oriental medical field with several herb medicines including activating blood flow and removing blood stasis medicine(活血化瘀藥), it may be possible in the future to develope specific anti-angiogenic agents that offer a less toxic potential therapy for cancer and angiogenic disease.

In the oriental medicine field, researches have been in progress regarding oriental medical factors. I also carried out a clinical study on stroke, from which I discovered meaningful results about important factors that impact on the prognosis of stroke. We studied 132 patients after diagnosis of stroke through a Brain-CT scan and MRI sea, to the oriental internal medicine department at the Hospital affiliated to Oriental Medical College, Dongeui University. All the patients showed meaningful improvement in the examination of their symptoms after four weeks, compared with the first week. Between strokes involving meridian system and strokes involving internal organs, the symptom of paralysis caused by strokes involving meridian system, which patients were in favorable initial condition, had improved significantly and that by strokes involving internal organs had not. The group whose initial bowel movement since the stroke was delayed, whose coating on the tongue was thick or the tongue was dry, whose pulse was tachycardiac, or who had a history of hypertension or diabetics showed a significantly worse symptom after 4 weeks than that of groups in the opposite cases.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore some new therapies to control clinical symptoms of patients with terminal cancer by using external applications. Methods: We investigated some literatures on the external applications for cancer patients and made diagrams. Results: The results are summarized as follows. External applications are one of the traditional oriental medical methods and these are effective for pain control, ascites & pleural effusion and palpitable mass. It has some characteristics which are simple, safe and popular, but we must pay attention carefully to allergic reaction and toxicity in using external applications. The therapeutic portion of external applications are decided by discipline of syndrome and disease differentiation, and the prescriptions are composed of antitumor herb medicines. Conclusions: From the above results, it is expected that external applications are useful to improve clinical symptoms and quality of life(QOL) for patients with terminal cancer who cannot intake foods or medicines.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Hangamdan(Kangaidan) on 60 patients who have suffered from breast cancer. Methods: Hangamdan(Kangaidan) was administered to patients for over 1 months continuously. We checked improvement of clinical symptoms, changes of chemistry hematological test. Results: The results obtained are summarized as follows. Hangamdan(Kangaidan) has significant effect on the improvement of clinical symptoms. The effects of maintenance and improvement in the symptoms with traditional oriental therapy(83.3%) and combined treatment of western and oriental therapy(92.1%) were observed. The effects of the symptoms were diarrhea(37.3%), abdominal pain (25.3%), general body weakness(22.9%), nausea(20.5%) and etc. in orders. And analysis of hematology attached by breast cancer, maintenance and increasing of WBC(89.9%), RBC(74.7%), Hgb(81.1%), Platelet(92.4%) were observed. After taken Hangamdan(Kangaidan), maintenance and decreasing of AST(85.9%), ALT(94.8%), ${\gamma}$-GTP(87.5%), BUN(88.3%), Creatinine(90.9%) were observed. And increasing of IL-12(25%), IFN-${\gamma}$(83%) were observed. Conclusions: From the above results, it is suggested that Hangamdan(Kangaidan) have significant effects on recovery of immune modulation.

Objectives : It was designed for making theoretical base about the relation of the Spleen, Stomach and the liver which could be used in clinic. Methods : Including Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經), the 22 kinds of books written about the relation of the Spleen, Stomach and the Liver, and 2 kinds of papers were referenced. They were divided and studied according to physiology, pathology, meridian system and treatment. This study is focused on internal organ theory. Conclusion 1. In physiology, the Liver has the function of smoothing and regulating the flow of vital energy(Ki), while the Spleen is in charge of digestion and transportation. 2. In pathology, there can be informed disharmony of the Spleen, Stomach and the Liver, blood deficiency in the Liver and Spleen, jaundice, and bleeding etc. 3. In meridian system, the junction points of Spleen Meridian and Liver Meridian are Liv14, SP6, SP12, SP13. 4. In treatment, 1) If there is disharmony of the Liver and Spleen, the Liver must be soothed and the function of Spleen invigorated. 2) If there is disharmony of the Liver and Stomach, the Liver must be soothed and the function of Stomach invigorated.

In order to study the anti-stress effect of hyangbujapalmultang, several measures of stress, including body weight changes, organ weight changes and catecholamine changes. The following result have been obtained: 1. The weight loss of contol group was $28.5{\pm}1.8g$, that of sample group was $20.3{\pm}1.6g$. This differance was statistcally significant. 2.The organ weight(Liver,Spleen,Kidney,Adrenal gland) was the only significant change in the spleen, in sample group comparing to control group. 3. The norepinephrine contents of control group was $695.5{\pm}22.7pg/ml$, that of sample group was $607.4{\pm}21.7pg/ml$. This shows significant difference in sample group comparing to contol group. 4. The epinephrine contents of control group was $212.8{\pm}9.8pg/ml$, that of sample group was $182.6{\pm}8.4pg/ml$. This shows significant differance in sample group comparing to control group. 5. The dopamine contents of control group was $504.5{\pm}31.3$, that of sample group was $463.4{\pm}27.8pg/ml$. This shows the value decreased, but none of it is significant. Based on avove results, it may be conculed that hyangbujapalmultang has anti-stress effects.

Objectives : This study was done to assess the effects of the clinical interchange between the Western Medicine and the Oriental Medicine for ischemic stroke patients. The patient outcomes include changes in neurologic function by modified NIH stoke scale, stroke pattern identification scale, and patient satisfaction, Methods : For the assessment of effects, this study was performed with 178 inpatients who had undergone the stroke care at three hospitals (W Hospital adopted western therapy, S Oriental Hospital adopted Sasang constitution medicine therapy, and H Oriental Hospital adopted mixed therapy according to a joint protocol on Western Oriental medical care) from November 1997 to December 1998. Patients were interviewed or written with self-entered questionnaire forms, and clinical data were obtained, Physicians or oriental doctors wrote clinical questionnaire forms according to the care process. Results : The patient outcomes within three hospitals at 2 stages (at admission and discharge in the modified NIH stroke scale. at admission and second weeks during admission in the stroke pattern identification scale) were found to be decreased, Especially in the results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis, the degree of improvement of modified NIH stroke scale of the stroke patients at W Hospital was significant large than it at S Oriental Hospital. Also, the degree of improvement of stroke pattern identification scale at W Hospital was significantly large than it at other two hospitals. However, the patient's satisfaction score at three hospitals wasn't significantly different. Conclusions : The result of this study suggested that the joint clinical research of Western & Oriental medical practitioners was possible even if there was a conflict between Western Medicine and Oriental Medicine. Therefore Western & Oriental medical practitioners share a mutual responsibility to apply evidence-based practice, to seek scientific empirical proof through randomized clinical trials between the multicenter.

Each decoction of Coptidis Rhizoma, Scutellariae Radix and Phellodendri Cortex was orally administrated to the rates. And the effects on the Gastrin and Uropepsin secretions were observed. The results were as follows: 1. The effects on the secretio of Gastrin in the experimental groups administrered each with Coptidis Rhizoma and Scutellariae Radix comparing with the normal group, showed signficant values P<0.05, P<0.02, P<0.01 and P<0.001 separately. However the group medicated with Phellodendri Cortex showed significant values only 30 minutes after the administration. 2. Uropepsion level in the experimental group administered each with Coptidis Rhizoma and Phellodendri Cortex, comparing with the normal group, showed highly significant statistic values (P<0.001). Another experimental group medicated with Scutellariae Radix showed significantly statistical values (P<0.001) 240 minutes after the administration. 3. According to the above mentioned results it was onculuded tat the secretion of Gastrin in plasma and Uropepsin content of urine in albino rats treated with Coptiodis Rhizoma decoction were remarkaby increased as comparing with Scutellariae Radix and Phellodendri Cortex decoction.

Pressure sore(Decubitus ulcer) is an area of ulceration and necrosis of the skin and underlying tissues occurring over the body prominence such as the sacrum, greater trochanter, scapula, lateral malleolus, thoracic spine and heels after prolonged or often repeated pressure. These days incidence of pressure sore have been increased because of the many population of the old, traffic accidents and cerebral vascular disease. But the treatment was not confirmly established. As for treatment, we used Talcum powder for 10 days in case 1 and 6 days in case 2. The patients were improved within 14 days after treatment in case 1 and 10 days in case 2.

This study was performed on the basis of clinical consideration about patient who has hepatocholangiocarcinoma, and pancreatic cancer. Cancer has gradually increased morbidity and mortality all over the world including Korea. Western medicine has treated with surgical therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy, but has not obtained outstanding results and has a difficulty due to side effects by those therapies. In this study, we recognized that symptom including hypochondriac pain by cancer are rapidly decreased with herbal medication treatment and acupuncture therapy. Oriental medicine treatment is applied throughly on the basis of the oriental medicine principle and the prescriptions were used Naeso-oksultang(內消沃雪湯). According to the above results, we can know this patient has improvement of patient's symptom on administration of oriental medicine treatment, it is helpful in decresing symptoms of patient and in improving quality of life.

Wernicke Disease is well known of nutriotional disorders Wernicke Disease is charaterized by ataxia, confusion and oculomotor disturbance. We diagnosis one patient, who has ataxia, confusion and oculomotor disturbance as Jusang(酒傷), and gave saenggangunbi-tang, bojungchiseub-tang and samchulgunbi-tang. We observed that clinical symptom and Liver function were improved by these herbal medicine Therefore We consider Wernicke Disease as Jusang(酒傷) and further reports with many case, however, will be needed.

We report a case of the cerebellar infarction and pons, medulla and mid brain infarction seen in a 30-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE). SLE has been diagnosed at 1992, and treated with western medicine for 10 years. The patient with right hand tremor and dysarthria, as the symptoms of a cerebellar infarction, visited our hospital. During treatment, the patient constantly complained left knee pain, it turned out the bone infarction and ligament injury in the MRI scan at May, 18, 2001, that was the side effect of the long period steroid therapy. At June 1, 2001, the patient revealed quadriparesis, dysphagia and dizziness. So we took the brain MRI scan, it showed pons, medulla and mid brain infarction. As the consequence of the oriental treatments, the symptoms of SLE had the improvement and the values of BUN, Creatinine were improved. But the symptoms of the stroke were not much changed.

Object : This study was carried out to investigate the bowel disorders following parkinson's disease. Methods : We studied 2 patients with constipation followed by parkinson's disease. Both were diagnosed as COLONOTONIA - according to 8 Constitution medicine. Case 1 was treated with methods of 8 Constitution therapy and herbal medication(Sopoongsoongee-won). Case 2 was treated with method of 8 Constitution therapy only. Conclusions : After treatment, symptom of constipation were improved in both case.

Hepatic encephalopathy is caused by disorders affecting the liver. The exact cause of the disorder is unknown. It occurs changes in mental state, consciousness, behavior, personality and changes in mood include forgetfulness, confusion, disorientation, delirium, dementia, decreased alertness, daytime sleepiness, decreased responsiveness, progressive stupor, coma. As 3 admission patients into oriental hospital of daejeon university include 2 cases of cerebral infarction, 1 case of liver cirrhosis, we found those are all hepatic encephalopathy. But until the diagnosis is made, we have many mistakes to find correct. Among the mistackes, specialy mixed thing is to compare hepatic encephalopathy and cerebral infarction. So, we report these cases with a brief review of related literatures.

In oriental medicine, Byun-jo(煩躁) is including in insomnia, restless, uneasiness, chest discomfort, irritation et all. Byun-jo is one of symptom in Soyangin(少陽人)(one of human type in Sasang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) the lower chest-overheated disease(胸膈熱證). In the book 'dongyi soose bowon(東醫壽世保元)', Soyangin Yanggueksanwha-tang(凉膈散火湯) is used at Soyangin the lower chest-overheated disease. One patient usually who had suffered from chest discomfort, insomnia of Byun-jo, after cerebral infarction the symptom of Byun-jo had grown worse, the patient was classified as Soyangin by somatotype, personality, therefore the patient treated with Soyangin Yanggueksanwha-tang for 10days, and the patient improved in clinical symptoms. so we report it for the better treatment.

Acute Myocardica Infarction has high mortality and bad prognosis. We treated a 68 year-old female patient of acute myocardiac infacrtion to follow cerebral infarction. The chief complainment is right hemiplegia, dyspnea, chest discomfort, palpitation, anxiety, insomnia. The prognosis cannot be good, Because she has anterior wall infarction, cardiomegaly, conduction block, hypertention and she is 68 years old. We treated her with chiefly Nogyongdaebo-tang and Gongjin-dan, and gradually increased momentum. also we used self west medicine. The chief complainment was improved. She became to do cane walking by herself.

Recurrent Pyogenic Cholangitis(RPC) is a distinct clinical entity characterized by recurrent attacks of fever, chills, abdominal pain, and jaundice caused by bacterial infection. In 27, July, 2000, We treated a 40-year-old male patient, complained of these symptoms : severe abdominal pain, fatigue, indigestion, interval chilling. We diagnosed as stagnation of the liver-qi and Qi(肝鬱氣滯), gave herbal medicine composited with Herba Lysimachiae(金錢草), Spora Lygodii(海金沙), Herba Artemisiae Scopariae(茵蔯).etc. After treatment, main symptoms were disappeared and stone of common bile duct was removed. As a consequence, herbal medicine treatment was not toxic to liver function and good effect on RPC induced symptoms.

Paraquat has been widely used as herbcide since 1960s. Paraquat played a great role in agriculture history and rescued many people from starvation. On the other hand, it also killed lots of people. Paraquat is so lethally toxic that most of them who taken it come to die, even small amounts of ingestions. Therefore many methods has been tried for treating Paraquat intoxication, but they're still in controversial. In this study, the author report a case of Paraquat intoxication by using 8 constitutional acupuncture therapy, diet and herbal medication. The result was relatively acceptable.

마미증후군으로 진단받은 환자에게 팔미지황환(八味地黃丸)에 가미방(加味方)의 투여 및 침(鍼), 구(灸), 물리치료(物理治療)를 이용한 한방요법으로 하지감각장애(下肢感覺障碍), 보행곤란(步行困難) 및 대소변(大小便) 장애(障碍) 등에 유의할 만한 증상의 호전을 볼 수 있었으며 향후 이에 대한 많은 임상적 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.
