  • This paper discusses the theoretical researches subject to elastic buckling problems of the structures. The purpose is to ensure the characteristic of buckling be true by arc-length method and the finite element method. The difficulties in processes calculating the equilibrium curve after buckling is to get the equilibrium owe near singular point at which the determinant of stiffness matrix is zero. The purpose of the load-displacement curve is to determine the buckling load of the structure, and further to get the information about the characteristic after buckling. Here, this paper expresses the incremental solution at particular point by the linear combination of both homogeneous mode and particular mode, then uses the method which gets the unknown parameter including this function, through trial-and-error method including modified N-R convergence process. Finally, this paper describes the multiple bifurcation of truss dome as the numerical examples according to this algorithm.

  • A theoretical exploration for determining the characteristic length of the cohesive zone for a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen under mode I loading was conducted. Two traction-separation laws were studied: (i) a law with only a linear elastic stage from zero to full traction strength; and (ii) a bilinear traction law illustrating a progressive softening stage. Two analytical solutions were derived for the first law, which fit well into two existing solution groups. A transcendental equation was derived for the bilinear traction law, and a graphical method was presented to identify the resultant cohesive zone length. The study using the bilinear traction law enabled the theoretical investigation of the individual effects of cohesive law parameters (i.e., strength, stiffness, and fracture energy) on the cohesive zone length. Correlations between the theoretical and finite element (FE) results were assessed. Effects of traction law parameters on the cohesive zone length were discussed.

  • A finite element model with the consideration of damage initiation and evolution has been developed for the analysis of the dynamic response of a composite sandwich panel subject to low velocity impact. Typical damage modes including fiber breakage, matrix crushing and cracking, delamination and core crushing are considered in this model. Strain-based Hashin failure criteria with stiffness degradation mechanism are used in predicting the initiation and evolution of intra-laminar damage modes by self-developed VUMAT subroutine. Zero-thickness cohesive elements are adopted along the interface regions between the facesheets and the foam core to simulate the initiation and propagation of delamination. A crushable foam core model with volumetric hardening rule is used to simulate the mechanical behavior of foam core material at the plastic state. The time history curves of contact force and the core collapse area are obtained. They all show a good correlation with the experimental data.

  • A new identification method for a nonproportional damping matrix using the finite element (FE) model updating technique is proposed. Mass and stiffness matrices of the undamped system are identified by FE model updating method. Sensitivity analysis is used to update the FE model, and zero frequencies are considered as design parameters to supplement the information of vibration characteristics. The nonproportional damping matrix is identified through the proposed method. A numerical example is considered to verify the performance of the proposed method. As a result, the damping matrix of the nonproportional system is estimated accurately.

  • To investigate the natural frequencies of curved piping systems with various elbow angles conveying flow fluid, a simulation is performed considering Initial tension due to the inside fluid. The system is analyzed by finite element method utilizing straight beam element. Elbow part is meshed using 4 elements, and the initial tension is considered by inserting equivalent terms into the stiffness matrix. Without considering the initial tension, the system becomes unstable, that is, the fundamental natural frequency approaches to zero value fast, as the flow velocity reaches critical value. With the initial tension terms, the system becomes stable where there is no abrupt decrease of the fundamental natural frequency. The change rate of the natural frequency with respect to the flow velocity reduces. As elbow angle increases, the system becomes stiffer, then around 150 degrees of the elbow angle the natural frequency has the largest value, the value decreases after the angle of the largest natural frequency. When angle is between 170 degrees and 179 degrees, the natural frequency is very sensitive. This means that small change of angle results in great change of natural frequency, which is expected to be utilized in the control of the natural frequency of the piping system conveying flow fluid.

  • Deck plates of ships or offshore structures would make out-of-plane distortion for their thin thickness. These distortions are usually straightened by thermal straightening such as flame heating method. After thermal straightening, the blocks are lifted and moved by cranes to assemble it at dry-dock stage. After this lifting process, out-of-plane deformation again happens frequently. And then, they continuously cause quality and accuracy problems in the final dry-dock process. So, it takes more time for repair and correction working. According to preceding research, the lifting process by cranes would offset the effect on thermal straightening. The target of this study is to develop a methodology analyzing the remaining efficiency of thermal straightening after block lifting. The development was based on the assumption of yield state at straightening region. Therefore the remaining efficiency was obtained by different stiffness slope while lifting & relieving. The efficiency formula was designed using inherent strain, and we made a table of zero-efficiency by cooling speed and class rule's steels. As a result, if the stress orthogonal to straightened line is calculated during lifting analysis by FEA, the efficiency can be obtained linearly to the values in the table. Finally, even optimized carling position can be designed by considering the regional data from series project and welding region on deck.

  • There are two methods to model the plastification of members comprising lumped and distributed plasticity. When a reinforced concrete member experiences inelastic deformations, cracks tend to spread from the joint interface resulting in a curvature distribution; therefore, the lumped plasticity methods assuming plasticity is concentrated at a zero-length plastic hinge section at the ends of the elements, cannot model the actual behavior of reinforced concrete members. Some spread plasticity models including uniform, linear and recently power have been developed to take extended inelastic zone into account. In the aforementioned models, the extended inelastic zones in proximity of critical sections assumed close to connections are considered. Although the mentioned assumption is proper for the buildings simply imposed lateral loads, it is not appropriate for the gravity load effects. The gravity load effects can influence the inelastic zones in structural elements; therefore, the plasticity models presenting the flexibility distribution along the member merely based on lateral loads apart from the gravity load effects can bring about incorrect stiffness matrix for structure. In this study, the linear flexibility distribution model is improved to account for the distributed plasticity of members subjected to both gravity and lateral load effects. To do so, a new model in which, each member is taken as one structural element into account is proposed. Some numerical examples from previous studies are assessed and outcomes confirm the accuracy of proposed model. Also comparing the results of the proposed model with other spread plasticity models illustrates glaring error produced due to neglecting the gravity load effects.

  • The softening behaviors of concrete have been the object of numerous experimental and numerical studies, because the load carrying capacity of cracked concrete structure is not zero. Numerical studies are devoted to the investigation of three-dimensional softening behaviors of concrete on the basis of a viscoplastic theory, which may be able to represent the effects of plasticity and also of rheology. In order to properly describe material behaviors corresponding to different stress levels, two surfaces in stress space are adopted; one is a yield surface, and the other is a failure or bounding surface. When a stress path reaches the failure surface, it is considered that the softening behaviors are initiated as micro-cracks coalesce and are simulated by assuming that the actual strain increments in the post-peak region are less than the equivalent viscoplastic strain increment. The experimental studies and the finite element analyses have been carried out under the displacement control. Numerically simulated results indicate that the model is able to predict the essential characteristics of concrete behaviors such as the non-linearity, stiffness degradation, different behaviors in tension and compression, and specially dilatation under uniaxial compression.
