  • This study is to investigate experimentally the strength properties of mortar using recycled fine aggregates(RA) and blast furnace slag powder(BS) without cement according to type of fine aggregate. In the results of the study, compressive strength of RA was the highest. It can be considered that the results are due to the reaction of the non-hydration cement in RA to the latent hydraulicity reaction of the BS.

  • The frequenc dependence of magnetic permeability($\mu$r) and dielectric constant($\varepsilon$r) in MHz-GHz frequency range and their relationships with microwave absorbing properties were investigated in sintered and composite Ni-Zn ferrites, respectively. It was confirmed that zero reflection condition was required the real parts of permeability and permittivity in sintered specimen, and the complex permeability, permittivity and dielectric loss tangent in composite specimen. The real part of permittivity varied with the replacement of nickel by manganese in sintered Ni-Zn ferrite. Therefore, we could control the matching frequency and matching thickness.

  • We have fabricated an in-plane aligned a-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7-x (a-YBCO) thin film on a LaSrGaO4(100) substrate with a PrBa2Cu3O7-x(PBCO) template layer by two step plused laser deposition using 308 nm XeCl excimer laser. A YBCO layer and PBCO layer grown at low temperatures were used as template layers. We have investigated the effect of the deposition temperature of template layers on the superconducting and struc-tural properties of in-plane aligned a-YBCO thin films. An optimal deposition temperature of the PBCO template layers was 630. In-plane aligned a-YBCO thin films showed an anisotropy ratio in resistivity of 11.5 and a zero resistance temperature of 88 K.

  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the flame structure of $CH_4/N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed chemistry are adopted in this calculation. The results show that an initially flat stagnation plane, where an axial velocity is zero, is deformed into a complex-shaped plane, and an initial stagnation point is moved far away from vortex head when the counterflow field is perturbed by the vortex. It is noted that the movement of stagnation point can alter the mechanism of reactants (fuel and oxidizer) fluxes into the flame surface, and then can alter the flame structure.

  • The material properties of rubber was determined by the experiments of uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, planer tension, equi-biaxial tension and volumetric compression. In compression test, it is difficult to obtain the pure state of compression stress and strain due to friction force between the specimen and compression platen. In this study, the stress and strain data from the equi-biaxial tension test were converted to compression stress and strain and compared to a perfect state of simple compression data when friction was zero. The compression test device with the tapered platen was proposed to overcome the effect of friction. It was turned out that the relationship of the stress and strain using the tapered platen was in close agreement with the pure compressive state.

  • As technology advances with development of new materials, it is important to measure the thermal diffusivity of material and to predict the heat transfer in the solid subject to thermal processes. The measurement of thermal properties can be done in a non-contact way using photothermal displacement spectroscopy. In this work, the thermal diffusivity was measured by analyzing the magnitude and phase of deformation gradient. We proposed a new data analysis method based on the real part of deformation gradient as the pump-probe offset value. As the result, compared with the literature value, the measured thermal diffusivities of materials showed about 3 % error.

  • In this paper, dynamic stiffness and flexibility for circular membranes are analytically derived using an efficient mixed-part dual boundary element method (BEM). We employ three approaches, the complex-valued BEM, the real-part and imaginary-part BEM, to determine the dynamic stiffness and flexibility. In the analytical formulation, the continuous system for a circular membrane is transformed into a discrete system with a circulant matrix. Based on the properties of the circulant, the analytical solutions for the dynamic stiffness and flexibility are derived. In deriving the stiffness and flexibility, the spurious resonance is cancelled out. Numerical aspects are discussed and emphasized. The problem of numerical instability due to division by zero is avoided by choosing additional constraints from the information of real and imaginary parts in the dual formulation. For the overdetermined system, the least squares method is considered to determine the dynamic stiffness and flexibility. A general purpose program has been developed to test several examples including circular and square cases.

  • In this paper we compare the solution of the one-dimensional beam model and the numerical solution of the two-dimensional linearized elasticity problem for rectangular domain of the beam-like form. We first derive the beam model starting from the two-dimensional linearized elasticity, the same way it is derived from the three-dimensional linearized elasticity. Then we present the numerical solution of the two-dimensional problem by finite element method. As expected the difference of two approximations becomes smaller as the thickness of the beam tends to zero. We then analyze the applicability of the one-dimensional model and verify the main properties of the beam modeling for thin beams.

  • The effects of surface radiative properties on the radiant cooling of opaque surfaces under clear sky condition are studied. Two types of surfaces, one gray and the other selective, are compared. For the nighttime cooling, black surface gives the lowest plate temperature and on the other hand the ideal selective surface gives the highest temperature. The reverse is true when there is an insolation. Equivalent radiative heat transfer coefficient of radiant cooling without convection is about $1{\sim}7\;W/m^2-K$ for the range of values studied. The surface with black within the $6{\sim}13\;{\mu}m$ band else zero emissivity could be regarded as a black surface for the nighttime radiant cooling purposes. However, lower band limit of $4\;{\mu}m$ is preferred to $6\;{\mu}m$ for small insolation situations.

  • Giant magneto-impedance (GMI) effect in zero-magnetostrictive Co-based amorphous ribbons samples in their as-quenched and stress-released states as well as with intentionally induced magnetic anisotropy were investigated. Magnetic and impedance properties of the samples exhibiting different anisotropy were compared and the optimum operation conditions for the studied samples from the view-point of their utilization as a sensor element have been determined. A design of a model of magnetic field sensor and characteristics of the constructed prototype are presented.
