In this paper, we study the effect of writing activity as mathematical communication on the students's mathematics achievement, learning attitude, and mathematical tendency. For this purpose, we construct a experimental class and then analyze the students' change in those aspects after applying three-divided-note writing activity and colleague feedback on their works those students are in the experimental class. As a result of the experiment, we find that three-divided-note writing activity and colleague feedback made some significant changes on the students achievement in mathematics, learning attitude, but does not affect on mathematical tendency. We also offer some suggestions for further research. Firstly, the mathematical communication ability must be stressed in mathematics education. For this purpose, we need to develop the teaching and the evaluation method to use not only writing but also reading, speaking, and listening skills so that many teachers can apply this method easily to their classes. Second, we need to fix some realistic problems such as fair evaluation , the numbers of students per class, the numbers of lesson, and too much extra-work, and so on. Thirdly, we suggest to explore some methods for extending three- divided-note writing activity to evaluate mathematical essay and to study educational effects of colleague feedback on mathematics performance assessment.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of Cornell typed science journal writing on elementary students' science-related attitude by gender and academic achievement. The subjects of study were 109 elementary students (5th grade). The experimental group performed Cornell typed science journal writing and the control group maintained traditional lectures for one semester. Science-related attitudes of this study are classified into scientific attitudes (7 sub-domains) and attitudes toward science (5 sub-domains). The collected data were analyzed by ANCOVA with SPSS. The results of study were as follows: Several sub-domain (voluntariness, cooperation, perception about science and scientist) of science-related attitudes positively changed in experimental group. Cornell typed science journal writing was especially effective on improving scientific attitude in male students, and attitude toward science in female students. Also, science journal writing was effective on improving science-related attitude (both scientific attitude and attitude toward science) in high-achieving group, but not effective in low-achieving group.
Three groups of maltreated Korean children (Grades 1 through 3) drawn from Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies were compared to a control group of nonmaltreated children on academic achievement as measured by standardized tests of reading, spelling, arithmetic, and writing. Findings were that maltreated children performed significantly below their nonmaltreated children on the standardized tests, in particular in arithmetic. In first grade, maltreated children did not perform below nonmaltreated children on writing and reading, but maltreated children gradually declined in academic performance in these skills. The older, grade 3, children showed more serious academic problems than the younger children (Grades 1 and 2) on four academic skills. This suggests that early experience of child abuse have a strong affect on children's academic achievement.
The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of users' satisfaction with the Automatic Writing Evaluation(AWE) on learners' sense of learning achievement through self efficacy in English writing class. AWE is a tool that automatically provides feedback on writing outputs by AI technology. College students were asked to write essays for each topic and use AWE to get feedback on their drafts, and finally revise them referring to the feedback. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the data collection. The data was analyzed using SPSS, and smart PLS-SEM along with bootstrapping techniques, The results of the study reveal the followings: 1) the convenience and usefulness of AWE had a positive effect on the willingness to reuse it; 2) the satisfaction with AWE had a positive effect on self-efficacy; 3) self-efficacy had a positive effect on learning achievement in terms of emotional and linguistic aspects. With the development of the 4th industry and A.I. technology, it is recommended to introduce new materials or programs such as AWE in English education.

This research aimed to explore the effects of collaborative writing activities in a mathematical context, specifically pertaining to areas such as numbers and operation, geometrical figure, and measurement in Mathematics: Level 5-b, on their mathematical achievement gain and disposition among Grade 5 students. To do this, out of a total of 62 students selected from two Grade 5 classes of J Elementary School in Dalseo-gu, Daegu City, who were found to be homogenic from the tests of math performance and dispositions, an experimental group(n=31) was designed and compared to a control group (n=31). Over a six week period from October to November in 2009, the experimental group was given collaborative writing lessons in math classes while the control group was given teacher-oriented regular lessons. The results were as follows. First, there was more or less considerable, though not significant, difference in overall mathematical achievement in the students experiencing collaborative writing activities when compared with the students in the control group. However, in terms of numbers and operation, a sub-category of mathematics, there was significant difference between the two groups. Second, the students experiencing collaborative writing activities were more positively affected in all sub-categories of mathematical disposition: confidence, flexibility, determination, curiosity, reflection, and value, than those in the control group. In summing up, the exposure of collaborative writing activities to mathematics learning was found to help students not only to have a concrete and proper grasp of the relevant problem solving process, which was observed from their mathematical achievement gain especially in the sphere of numbers and operation, but also to have their mathematical disposition set towards more positive direction, which was seen in all sub-categories of mathematical disposition measurement.
The development and use of computer mediated communications (CMC) as a tool for teaching and learning English has grown considerably in recent years. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors related to learners' participation, achievement, and satisfaction in EFL classes using web-based bulletin boards. The total number of 77 university students participated in this study. Three domains and eight independent variables investigated in this study were a learner-related domain (attitudes toward CMC, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, attitudes toward writing), an interaction-related domain (student-student interaction, teacher-student interaction), and an environmental domain (physical support and design of the web site). In order to determine interrelation of variables correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used. The results of this study showed that the factors predicting a learner's participation were instrumental motivation, attitudes toward writing, and teacher-student interaction. The factors explaining a learner's achievement were learner's participation and attitudes toward writing, and the factors predicting a learner's satisfaction were integrative motivation, student-student interaction, teacher-student interaction, physical support and learner's participation.
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of 3D avatar-based Virtual Reality chatting on college students' English learning achievement. Forty college sophomore students participated at this study and the research lesson continued for 8 weeks. They were administered to take a pretest to evaluate their vocabulary knowledge and writing skills. Their progress was assessed on the basis of midterm. Finally, a post-questionnaire was administered to measure their interest and understanding toward their learning experience in 3D avatar-based Virtual chatting. The results of this study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the control group and experimental group with respect to their midterm scores and writing. The result of the post-survey indicated the interest of English was statistically higher than the understanding of English.
This study investigated the effect of teaching mathematical communication in mathematics learning. Cooperative learning, mathematics pin pals, and writing a mathematics diary were used to teach how to communicate mathematically. The experimental group was assigned to cooperate in class, to write a mathematics diary at the end of each class, and to exchange the mathematics pen pals once a week. The control group was taught by the traditional teaching method. The results were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The learning achievement between the two groups was performed with pretests and posttests. And after this study, mathematics pen pals, video protocol and open-ended test were analyzed. The results of this study are the following: 1. There were little differences in learning achievement test between the group taught through communication and those not. And there were little differences in the results of achievement test between the two groups-high and low level classes.2. Cooperative learning, writing a mathematics diary and mathematics pen pals were effective as methods of teaching communication mathematically. The analysis of mathematics pen pals which is to investigate student's writing abilities showed that pen pal partners were improved in QCAI communication levels. There was a significant difference between the two groups in open-ended test. This means that communication learning has an effect on the tests for mathematical thought, reasoning, and creative thought. The analysis of video protocol showed that four students in a cooperative group were improved in their speaking and listening abilities.
The purpose of this study is to develop a science writing teaching strategy, and to apply it to the fourth-graders in elementary science classes. We examined its effect on their motivation, attitude, and understanding of science concept. For the research fourth grade children were grouped into three classes: an experimental class A of 27 children, an experimental class B of 24 and a comparative class of 27. All of them are from H elementary school in Seoul, Korea. Experimental class A learned science writing with a newly developed strategy while experimental class B learned science writing in a traditional method. Comparative class did not learn science writing. As a result, class A showed positive changes on students' science motivation, attitude, and understanding of science concept. In addition, class B with even one science writing task for a chapter had higher achievement in the understanding of science concept than the comparative class had.
How to enhance the ability of underachieve students are unsolved problems for mathematics teachers despite of their best efforts to teach them. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of mathematical journal writing as a method of improving the mathematical attitudes and achievements for underachieve students. Seven students whose performances were below 40% on the final exam in the 1st semester were recruited in order to gather empirical data. Before journal writing procedures, the subjects' characteristics, learning styles and mathematical attitudes were investigated through personal interview and mathematical attitude test. After six-week journal writing, follow-up survey and mathematical attitude test were conducted. The results of this research are as follows: Mathematical journal writing had a positive effect to underachieve students on improving confidence in mathematics and a positive influence on active and effective learning attitude. And mathematical journal writing had an effect on improvement in their mathematics achievement comparing first semester's final exam with second semester's mid-term exam. Finally mathematical journal writing contributes positively to the relationship between students and their teacher.
