Analysis of the priority of roles performed by health educators in charge of health promotion programs at community health centers (보건소 건강증진사업 담당인력으로서 보건교육사 역할의 우선 순위 분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the roles of workforce required for effective execution of health promotion programs of community health centers in Korea. Methods: Survey was undertaken on 92 people in community health centers and the Analytic Hierarchy Process was employed in order to obtain results regarding the relative importance of role required for health educators. Results: The analysis suggests that of all 5 categories, 'Assess needs for health education' and 'Evaluate health promotion programs and Conduct related research' were relatively more important than the other categories of role. Taking into account the weightings of the main categories and the subcategories, the analysis shows that the order of importance follows, 'Use existing health-related statistical data', 'Collect health-related data', 'Survey method and knowledge and skills related to health statistics', 'Write an evaluation report', 'Understand and apply health education planning theories'. Conclusion: As a health promotion expert of community health center, a health educator is preferentially required to perform 1) the role to analyze the needs of the community and enable the planning for a customized health promotion program, 2) the role to execute evaluation throughout a health promotion programs and disseminate evaluation findings and apply them in following programs, in consideration of higher relative importance of these roles.

Analysis of the Present Condition and Demand for the Assistant Workforce in Korean Childcare Center (어린이집 보조인력의 노동실태 및 요구분석: 보조교사, 대체교사, 부담임 교사를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the working conditions and demands of the assistant workforce at childcare centers, and to provide suggestions on policies for childcare teachers. To achieve the purpose of the study, a total of 190 assistant teachers, nursing helpers, alternative teachers and others were surveyed online during the month of August 2017. The survey examined the employment route and working motives, working conditions and environment, job and educational difficulties for analyzing the work conditions and demands of ancillary staff. For the analysis method, SPSS 12.0 was used to analyze frequency and difference. The main findings are as follows. First, childcare center assistants were able to work at their respective times, making it mandatory for them to enter the workforce, and making job openings for ancillary teachers. Second, 73.7% said the daily working hours were '4 hours to 8 hours' under the conditions and 57.9% said 'More than 510,000 won to less than 1 million won.' Average amount of rest time per day was about 30 minutes, and 17% had no rest periods. Third, based on the job and education status, ancillary personnel performed "infant and child guidance and interaction", "Cleaning and cleanliness related tasks" most actively, and "care for cleaning and cleanliness" and "care for morning and night care". Fourth, in the job trouble and difficulty, ancillary staff found it difficult to satisfy with wage related complaints and job insecurity, and the reason for agreeing to the non-regular workforce becoming a regular worker was found to be due to the stability of employment. Lastly, the most urgent tasks to solve the problem of non-regular workers were to fill the wage gap between regular and irregular workers, shorten the working hours and improve the working conditions. The policy implications are presented based on the above findings.

Case Study on Revising Curriculum of a Industrial High School through Analysis of Manufacturing Workforce demand focused on Chungnam Province in Korea (지역 기반 산업의 인력 수요 분석을 통한 공업 계열 특성화 고등학교의 교육과정 개편 사례 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to revise and reorganize the direction of the department of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$Industrial High School though analysis of manufacturing status and workforce demand in Chungnam province focused on the Geumsan Area. In the study, ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$Industrial High School of the status and actual conditions were identified through interview, literature review and data analysis. Surveys of the school teachers, parents and students was conducted in order to investigate the awareness of renaming and reorganization of school departments, curriculum revision of the school. Statistical data was collected and analyzed in order to figure out manufacturing industry and its workforce demand of Chungnam Province in Korea. Findings of the study were as follows: Small and medium enterprises of manufacturing industry have been developed a lot in Geumsan Area in Chungnam province. Four major industries including (1) automobile parts, (2) electronic and information equipment, (3) Cutting edge culture, and (4) Agricultural-livestock and bio are intensively fostered as regional strategic industries in the Chungnam province. The manufacturing industry has a 33.6-percent, and then service-mining and manufacturing industry has a 80.0-percent of total number of employee in Geumsan Area. It is expected that industrial workforce demand of Geumsan Area come out of manufacturing and service-mining industrial sector. The following is recommended for the school curriculum revision: (1) focussing on mechanical control for the revision of computer applying mechanical department, (2) focussing on automation electric equipment for the revision of electric control department, (3) focussing on food process control for revising of bio-food industrial department. It's helpful to make a progress of the school that establish identification of industrial specialized high school as an institution of vocational education at the secondary level through supplying qualified workforce to Manufacturing industry in Chungnam Province.

  • Compared to the quantitative increase in women's workforce, women's status in the organization remains poor. When it needs diverse perspectives and flexibility cope with the environment, it is an urgent challenge for companies to manage women in organizations. In this study, it is explored the internal factors of the organization that allow women managers to be more immersed in the organization. While previous researches have focused mainly on employment equality policies, this study expands the scope of existing research by considering the organization's internal support factors, such as mentoring, education and training, and organizational atmosphere. The female manager panel data showed that mentoring, education and training, and organizational climate all increase the leading influence of female. This leading influence affects organizational commitment and mediated between organizational internal factors and organizational commitment. In other words, it has been found that it is important for female managers to take the initiative in their position as well as the internal support of companies for female managers to immerse themselves in the organization. This study could contribute to solving the dilemma of the use of women's workforce by companies that fail to recover all investment costs such as recruitment, education, training, and compensation of excellent women's workforce.

  • The Korean government has implemented various policies such as establishing new major/department and operating a variety of education programs related with cybersecurity. However, it has not yet been constructed virtuous cycle that can provide appropriate education and training to professionals with the high level and quality. In this study, by surveying and analyzing satisfaction about education and training program aimed at employees in public sector who are in charge of cybersecurity, we suggest the direction of education and training for cybersecurity experts required at the national level.

Southeast Asian Studies in the Age of STEM Education and Hyper-utilitarianism

  • Area studies, including Asian and Southeast Asian studies, in the post-Cold War era have been facing an epochal challenge that is rooted in two conditions: on the one hand, the end of the Cold War and the fading geopolitical rationale, and on the other, the emergence of the technology-driven transformation of the global economy and society. The consequences thus far are paradoxical: 1) While the technology-led transformation needs a workforce with critical and innovative abilities, higher education becomes more hyper-utilitarian; 2) While the transformation instigates increasing diversity of identities in global cultures, many countries thrive for STEM education at the expense of learning languages and cultures, including area studies which are essential for diversity. Southeast Asian studies programs need to change in response to these new conditions. These changing conditions and paradoxes, nevertheless, take different forms and degrees in the American, European and Asian academies, thanks to their different histories of higher education. The prospects for Southeast Asian Studies in these various academies are likely to be different too.

Awareness and educational needs on preventive dental treatment among oral health workers (구강보건인력의 예방치과진료에 대한 인식 및 교육요구도)

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to provide basic data needed in developing an educational program designed to upgrade capacity and awareness of preventive dental treatment among oral health workers, by analyzing levels of awareness of preventive dental treatment and educational needs among dentists and dental hygienists. Methods: The collected data was analyzed with SPSS program ver. 19.0. The data was under t-test. Results: The frequency level of giving preventive dental treatment to patients among dentists and dental hygienists is below mid-point, 3 on the 5-point Likert scale. In terms of frequency level per item, scaling & polishing was ranked the highest, followed by periodontal maintenance, tooth-brushing instruction, and prescription and instruction of oral care product in descending order. On the questions asking how important preventive dental care they perceive to be, both dentists and dental hygienists perceived it to be highly important. When they were asked to rank those items by the importance of education, they considered periodontal maintenance as the most important one, followed by individual education of oral health, incremental oral health care, scaling& polishing, toothbrushing instruction, and prescription and instruction of oral care product. Respondents pointed out problems in running a preventive dental treatment program as follows: overwork, lack of dedicated workforce, un-fixed costs, and lack of necessary equipment. When they were asked to point out items needed to run such a program, the largest number of respondents indicated dedicated workforce placement, followed by improving awareness of the customer, and improving awareness of the dental workers. Conclusions: In order to effectively run a preventive dental treatment program, it is necessary for oral health workers to clearly understand the concept of it. It is also necessary to develop and operate an education program on preventive dental treatment targeting oral health professionals.

Fostering growth: The impact of STEM PBL on students' self-regulation and motivation

  • There is an increasing concern in the United States regarding the workforce's ability to maintain a competitive position in the global economy. This has led to an increased interest in effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of STEM project-based learning (PBL) on students' self-regulation and motivation to learn. Secondary students (n = 60) participated in a STEM summer camp in which STEM PBL was utilized. Results showed that students increased their self-regulation skills (t = 2.83, df = 59, p = .004) and motivation (t = 2.25, df = 59, p =.004), with Cohen's d effect sizes of 0.395 and 0.404, respectively. Student-centered learning and peer collaboration while solving real-world problems were likely the greatest contributing factors to the outcomes. Educators should utilize the results to provide opportunities for students to experience STEM PBL.

Comparative Studies on Credit Systems of Secondary Vocational Education in Australia and Finland (호주와 핀란드의 중등단계 직업교육 학점제 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the current state of credit system in secondary and vocational education in Australia and Finland. For this purpose, this study compares the secondary vocational education system in Australia and Finland and compares how the curriculum is organized, operated and evaluated at secondary level. Australia and Finland have different characteristics in secondary vocational education system, while Australia operates vocational education programs mainly in comprehensive high schools under a decentralized system, while Finland is a centralized system and is divided into general education institutions and separate vocational education institutions. However, in terms of the organization and operation of the curriculum, both countries are based on the credit system, adopting the unemployed school system, and guaranteeing the choice of students. The results of this study are meaningful in that the policy direction to introduce and operate the credit system at the high school level recently has made meaningful implications through the present situation of overseas countries.
