  • Purpose: This study is conducted to evaluate the job stressors for dental technicians in Ulsan city. Methods: The Korean standard job stressors assessment tool developed by Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) was used to compare the survey result with Korean reference value. The questionnaire on the social, demographic and job characteristics of dental technicians was also used to find the factors affecting to job stressors by using multiple linear regression analysis. Results: A total of 155 questionnaire was collected from 2010 to 2011. Among the eight fields of stressors, the physical environment (men 50.0, women; 58.3) and job demands (men 57.1, women 57.1) were higher than the median value of the Korean Workers. By multiple linear regression analysis, the significant factors to the physical environment were the satisfaction degree of indoor odor, number of employee, duty and working hours. In terms of the job demand, duty, working hours, age, and the satisfaction to the efficiency of space utilization were significantly associated to the score of job demand. Conclusion: Based on these results, it is necessary to manage appropriate workload, control indoor odor and design an efficient work space for prevention of job stress of dental technicians.

  • Background: Seafaring is an inherently stressful environment. Because working time and leisure time is spent in the same confined environment for a prolonged period of time, many stressors present in seafaring can also be conceived of as chronic. We explored the effects of duration at sea, seafaring experience, environmental stressors, and psychological capital (PsyCap) on the sleep quality and fatigue of seafarers. PsyCap is a construct that draws upon ideas from positive psychology and positive organizational behavior, and is intended to capture an individual's psychological capacities that can be developed and utilized for performance improvements. Methods: We collected survey data from a sample of seafarers working in the offshore re-supply industry (n = 402) and a sample of seafarers working on board combined passenger and cargo ships (n = 340). Results: PsyCap emerged as a robust predictor with statistically significant relations to fatigue and sleep quality in both samples. PsyCap also interacted with duration at sea in explaining fatigue in seafarers working on board the passenger and cargo ships. Seafarers on passenger and cargo ships also reported significantly higher levels of fatigue than those working in the offshore re-supply industry. Conclusion: Coupled with emerging research showing that PsyCap is trainable, our results suggest that maritime organizations could have much to gain by being cognizant of and developing routines for continually developing the PsyCap of their employees.

  • Although plants have evolved to possess various defense mechanisms from local biotic and abiotic stressors, most of yield loss is caused by theses stressors. Recent studies have revealed that several different stress responsive reactions are inter-networking. Therefore, the identification and dissection of stress responsive genes is an essential and first step towards understanding of the global defense mechanism in response to various stressors. For this purpose, we applied cDNA microarray analysis, because it has powerful ability to monitor the global gene expression in a specific situation. To date, more than 10,000 non-redundant genes were identified from seven different cDNA libraries and deposited in our EST database (http://plant.pdrs.re.kr/ks200201/pepper.html). For this study, we have built 5K cDNA microarray containing 4,685 unigene clones from three different cDNA libraries. Monitoring of gene expression profiles of hot pepper interactions with biotic stress, abiotic stresses and chemical treatments will be presented. Although this work shows expression profiling at the sub-genomic level, this could be a good starting point to understand the complexity of global defense mechanism in hot pepper.

  • Housewife plays a significant role in maintaining a health family life. If she can not function adequately due to high stress, it will affect quality of life of the household members. It also interferes with the normal process of family development. Futhermore, dysfunctional family will have effects on morale of the servicemen in military. This is a descriptive study. The main purpose of this study is to compare the level and types of stress between a group of military wives and a group of civilian wives and provide a data which can be used to develop a stress management program. Sample consist with 250 military wives and 250 civilian wives residing in metro Seoul area. Data collection was done during October 4, 1994-November 30, 1994. Stress was measured with the instrument developed by the researcher. The cronbach's ${\alpha}$ score of the instrument was .91. The data was analyzed by using SPSS-PC. The results of this study are : 1. The stress score was 47.09 for military wives, 36.56 for civilian wives. The range of score was 0-192. The stress level of military wives was greater than civilian wives. (t=4.80, P<.000) 2. The rank order of stressors of military wives were 1) move 2) residential environment 3) purchase of house 4) holidays. The rank order of stressors of civilian wives were 1) husband late return after work 2) arguments with husband 3) holidays 4) husband's drinking problem. The result shows that the main stressors of military wives are frequent moves, residential environment, uncertainty of the future, unsafe work environment of husband, and the lack of private life which are all associated with the military. Therefore, it is urgently needed to distribute this facts through military journal to understand the characteristic of the stress of military wives, and to develope appropriate health care program to lessen the stress.

  • In recent years, Korea's shipbuilding industry have expanded its business into offshore plant. These changes are increasing the interest on job stress in shipbuilding industry. The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences of job stressors between white and blue-collar workers. The survey was using Korean Occupational Stress Scale(KOSS) questionnaire and was administered to 8,080 workers of large shipyard company. As a result of the survey, compared with the median score of Korean workers, job stress level of shipyard company workers was low. However, seven categories of KOSS, except for job demand showed higher stress levels of blue-collar workers than white-collar workers. The overall stress level of shipyard company workers is low, however, it is important to find stressors by considering the type of work, working period etc., through a detailed analysis of KOSS 8-categories. The results of this study may be helpful to identify the level of stress and to establish preventive measures in Shipyard Company.

  • The present study explores how the stress of online learners is related to Korean cultural norms and social expectation and presents the criteria online education should aim at when designing instructional approaches. A sample of 176 students from a Korean online university participated in a study investigating the patterns in the academic and personal stressors they face. This study also examines stressor types in relation to sample characteristics, analyzed with a categorization method developed by extant researchers on the stress faced by U.S. college students. Unlike the findings of previous studies on college student stress, this study's results reveal that nontraditional Korean online students were faced with (1) taking on the multiple roles at work and home prescribed by cultural and social norms, and (2) challenges in regulating study habits and the learning environment as adult learners. The relevant implications for the design of online learning are discussed.

  • Several contributing factors have been proposed for expression of excessive anxiety. Behavioral inhibition, activation of amygdala, and genetic vulnerability interchangeably affect each other. Only few studies have addressed the differences and similarities in anxiety between animal and human. The consensus is that individual vulnerability is a main factor for the expression of anxiety, although the interaction of environmental stressors and biological characteristics is involved in the presentation of anxiety. Further work is required to investigate how the interaction between stress and diathesis can affect responsiveness of stress and anxiety in animal and human. Here, the author reviews the findings regarding differences and similarities in both animal and human studies. Knowing the reciprocal relationship between the environment (stressors) and individual vulnerability or resilience, the proper understanding of anxiety and anxiety disorders would be possible.

  • Despite advances in medicine and preventive strategies, fewer than 1 in 5 people with hypertension have the problem under control. This could partly be due to gaps in fully elucidating the etiology of hypertension. Genetics and conventional lifestyle risk factors, such as the lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, excess salt intake, and alcohol consumption, do not fully explain the pathogenesis of hypertension. Thus, it is necessary to revisit other suggested risk factors that have not been paid due attention. One such factor is psychosocial stress. This paper explores the evidence for the association of psychosocial stressors with hypertension and shows that robust evidence supports the role of a chronic stressful environment at work or in marriage, low socioeconomic status, lack of social support, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, childhood psychological trauma, and racial discrimination in the development or progression of hypertension. Furthermore, the potential pathophysiological mechanisms that link psychosocial stress to hypertension are explained to address the ambiguity in this area and set the stage for further research.
