The Relationship between Firefighters' Work Demand and Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders: The Moderating Role of Task Characteristics

  • Background: Emergency workers such as firefighters are cataloged within the most demanding and injurious professions globally. Considering the health and safety implications in firefighting, a lot of research needs to be conducted to examine how firefighters' task characteristics and their work demand influence the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). This study therefore examines how the task characteristics of firefighters moderates the relationship between their work demand and the development of WMSDs. Methods: Convenient sampling was employed to select 320 firefighters in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression. Results: The findings revealed that work demand and task characteristics have significant positive effects on WMSDs. Again, the task characteristics of firefighters moderates the relationship between their work demand and WMSDs. Conclusion: Since the study shows that task characteristics influences the relationship between work demand and WMSDs, it is vital for managers to constantly modify the nature of tasks performed by and work demand of emergency workers to minimize the development of WMSDs and other industrial health complications.

철도관제사의 직무요구, 교대근무, 과업환경 및 스트레스 요인이 건강에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Job Demand, Shift, Work Environment and Stressors on the Railway Traffic Controller's Health)

  • This study highlights the main effect of job demand, work shift, work environment and stressors on the railway traffic controller's health, and the moderating effect of work0life balance. The result of empirical analysis based on questionnaires received from 328 traffic controllers working at 10 railway operating companies indicates that job demand, work shift, work environment and stressors have significant effect on their health, among which stressors is a major factor. In the respect of moderating effect, WLB showed no significance except for job demand. This result implies that controller's health can not be enhanced through their individual family or leisure life. Therefore, effective countermeasures and policy to mitigate their health problems and heal their symptoms are urgent.

  • Much research has focused on the conflict and balance between work and family. Yet few studies examine how women feel in balancing these two roles. In that regard, this study examines how married working women feel balanced between work and family as well as the levels of support availability/demand that exists. The level of sense of balance regarding work-family is average. Sense of balance is related to age, income, work hours, size of workplace, numbers of family friendly policies, the family's attitude to woman's work, and the level of balancing strategies used. The demand for support is higher than the availability of support. Both factors are related to working hours and balancing strategies, etc.

외국인 고용허가제 도입에 따른 효율적 노동인력 수급에 관한 연구 (A Study on Efficient Work Force Supply-Demand According to the Employment Permit System for Foreigners)

  • The employment permit system for foreigners, which stresses introduction of foreign work force in a legal manner rather than in the position of being trainees, is anticipated to efficiently improve introduction and the overall management system of foreign work force and related difficulties such as illegal alien problems, absurdity on sending laborers overseas. In this paper, a prospective model of supply and demand of work force has been developed basing on various categories of industries and patterns about nationally practical foreign employees to look over efficient supply and demand of work force suiting employment of foreigner among foreign work force policies. To propose the prospective model, we have derived industry- and pattern-related matrixes of foreign laborers basing on Inter-Industry Analysis Method put forth by Professor Leontiyef in 1930, and through the derived matrix assessed repercussions concerning overall domestic industries and foreigner types and decided yearly weight; the capacity of supply and demand of foreign laborers can be compared through proposed statistical estimation and government estimation by combining the determined weight with yearly incomes of foreign laborers. This paper has thoroughly considered the particularity of our employment permit system for foreigners and applied the Weibull distribution and incorporated the dependence of foreign laborers during the limited period of 3 years to the industry relation analysis, ultimately proposing an efficient supply and demand method about domestic foreign work force.

The Effects of Job Demand-control-support Profiles on Presenteeism: Evidence from the Sixth Korean Working Condition Survey

  • Background: Presenteeism is closely related to work performance, work quality and quantity, and productivity at work. According to the job demand-control-support model, job demand, job control, and support play important roles in presenteeism. The present study investigated job characteristics profiles based on the job demand-control-support model and identify the association between job characteristics profiles and presenteeism. Methods: This secondary data analysis used the Sixth Korean Working Condition Survey, a nationwide cross-sectional dataset. The study included 25,361 Korean wage workers employed in the workplace with two or more workers. Participants were classified into four job characteristics profiles based on the job demand-control-support model, using latent profile analysis, and logistic regression was performed to examine the association between study variables. Results: Overall, 11.0 % of study participants reported experience of presenteeism in the past 12 months. Age, sex, location, monthly income, shift work, work hours, health problems, and sleep disturbances were significantly associated with presenteeism. The rate of presenteeism was the highest in the passive isolate group. The passive collective, active collective, and low-stain collective groups had a 23.0%, 21.0%, and 29.0% lower likelihood of experiencing presenteeism, respectively, than the passive isolate group. Conclusions: The job demand-control-support profiles and the risk of presenteeism were significantly associated. The most significant group that lowered the experience of presenteeism was the low-strain collective group, which had a low level of demand and high levels of control and support. Therefore, we need a policy to reduce job demand and increase job control and support at the organizational and national levels.

취업모의 일-자녀양육 양립 부담감과 영유아기 자녀를 위한 시간연장 보육서비스 요구 (Working Mothers' Work-Child Rearing Strain and Their Demand on Back-up Care Services)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the difference of working mothers' work-child rearing strain and their demand on special care services according to each mother's work conditions and childcare situation. 477 working mothers who have only one child each were gathered by the use of the purposive quota sampling method and analyzed with t-test, F-test, correlation, and multiple regression. The main results showed that working mothers had high work-child rearing strain and demand on special care services when their working conditions were inflexible and they were not satisfied with the care services for their child. The major variable which explained working mothers' demand on special care services was e their work-child rearing strain.

새만금 간척지구의 농업용지 토지이용계획을 고려한 농업용수 수요량 산정 (A Calculation of Agricultural Water Demand According to the Farmland Developing Plan on the Saemangeum Tidal Land Reclamation Project)

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate agricultural water demand as considering landuse plan of the farm land on the Saemangeum tidal land reclamation project. This study based on the farm landuse plan(2012) and considered some items which did not included previous work like prevention water for resalinization for paddy and upland and muli-purpose water for upland. This study showed that the agricultural water demand estimated $145.123Mm^3/yr$, which is needed as much $14.792Mm^3/yr$ as more water than previous work. The difference comes from the change of unit water demand. Water demand is possible to be changed if guidelines are improved and detailed design work is completed through further study. Especially, the more studies for prevention water for resalinization in a tidal reclaimed farmland and water demand for a horticulture are needed.

새로운 작업조직 시스템이 직업성 긴장수준 및 직무스트레스에 미치는 영향 (The Impact of New Work Organizational System on Job Strain, and Psychosocial Distress)

  • Objectives : New organizational work systems, and their impact on the mental health of employees, are considered to beone of the most important topics in the area of industrial health. This study was conducted to compare job characteristics (job demand and decision latitude) levels, and psychosocial distress of workers in acompany introducing to new organizational work systems, to those of workers managed by traditional work systems. Methods ; A study sample of 627 shipbuilding workers (446the new work organizational system and 181 the traditional system) were recruited for this study. A structured-questionnaire was used to assess general characteristics, job characteristics(work demand, decision latitude), and psychosocial distress. Results : The decision latitude was not significantly higher in the new work system compared to the traditional system. However, the job demand was significantly higher in the new work system than in the traditional system. The psychosocial distress was higher within the new work system than the traditional system, but no significant relationships were found. The proportion of increased strain was significantly greater with the new system than the traditional system. Conclusion : These results suggest that increases in the decision latitude did not sufficiently compensate for higher job strain or increased work intensity. If the increase in the decision latitude was temporary, with the typical job demand remaining high, such work can be still be considered to have a job strain Futureresearch should consider psychosocial distress and fatigue as importantproblems caused by new work organizational systems, and should be performed to assess their impact through out industry.

간호사의 직무요구와 직무자원이 건강문제와 이직의도에 미치는 영향: 직무소진과 직무열의의 매개효과 (Effect of Job Demands and Resources by Nurses on Health Problem and Turnover Intention: The Mediating Effects of Work Burnout and Engagement)

  • 본 연구는 직무요구-자원 모형을 바탕으로 간호사의 직무요구와 직무자원, 직무소진과 직무열의, 건강문제와 이직의도 간의 관계를 규명하기 위한 가설적 모형을 구축하고 이를 검정하여, 간호 조직의 성공적인 자원관리 방안을 위한 기초자료를 제시하고자 시행되었다. 연구 대상자들은 서울시 소재하는 대학병원에서 근무하는 간호사 320명을 대상으로 실시되었다. 연구 결과, 간호사의 직무요구는 직무소진 증가와 직무열의 감소에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 직무자원은 직무열의 증가에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 직무요구는 직무소진을 매개로 건강문제와 이직의도 증가에 간접적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 직무자원은 직무소진과 직무열의를 매개로 건강문제와 이직의도 감소에 유의한 간접효과를 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 직무소진은 건강문제 증가와 이직의도 증가에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 반면, 직무열의는 이직의도에 직접적인 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 간호사들이 지각하는 직무자원과 직무요구가 건강문제와 이직의도에 미치는 영향을 직무소진과 직무열의의 매개 효과로 파악한 기초자료로 간호 관리자들이 조직의 성과를 높이기 위한 전략적 자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

직무스트레스가 직무손실에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Job Stress on Work Impairment)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of job stress on work impairment. Method: 354 workers' data from Seoul and the Gyeonggi area were collected between February 1 and March 30 2006 by structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was meant to determine demographic data, job stress, and work impairment questionnaire. Data analyzed by SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 5.0 program. Results: Job stress was ranked job demand, insufficient job control, organizational system, lack of reward, job insecurity, interpersonal conflict, and occupational climate. The work impairment of completing work was increased when the stress of insufficient job control, lack of reward, job insecurity, and occupational climate were increasing. The work impairment of avoiding distraction was increased when the stress of job demand, insufficient job control, organizational system, lack of reward, job insecurity, and occupational climate were increasing. The stress of job demand, lack of reward, job insecurity, and occupational climate had an effect on avoiding distraction. The stress of lack of reward and occupational climate had an effect on completing work. Conclusion: If employers manage job stress of job demand, lack of reward, job insecurity, and occupational climate, their business will benefit.
