  • To realize the infinite possibilities of materials derived from wood, it is necessary to overcome the weak moisture stability of wood. Thus, the development of an eco-friendly hydrophobic coating agent is essential, and of these, woody biomass-based materials are strongly attractive as coatings. In this study, eco-friendly hydrophobic wood coatings were prepared using carnauba wax purified from palm leaves and sprouts, and kraft lignin. The physicochemical properties of the carnauba wax/lignin blends according to the ratio of carnauba wax and lignin were observed by morphology and functional group change. In addition, the coating performance of carnauba wax/lignin blend coatings was confirmed by measuring the contact angle change. It was found that the addition of lignin could accelerate the atomization of wax particles, and that micro-roughness can be realized when applied to the actual wood surface, to ensure that the coating effect over time lasts longer. In addition, it was confirmed that the addition of lignin increases the hydrogen-bond-based interaction with the wood of the coating, thereby providing better coating stability and increasing the durability of the coating solvent under friction. The carnauba wax/lignin paint developed in this way is eco-friendly because all components are made of wood-based raw materials and have an excellent affinity with wood surfaces. Therefore, it is expected to be applicable to the coating process of wood-plastic composites and timber composites.

  • To examine how the difference of molecular weight distribution of cellulase influenced the beating process according to surface pore size of the fiber, high molecular weight enzyme and low one were applied to soft wood pulp, hard wood pulp, cotton linter pulp. Some enzymes with the distribution of low molecular weight penetrated into cellulose in the proportion of surface pore size and the results were negative as like : the low viscosity, decrease of refining Yield, decrease of fine fibers content and so on. But in cotton linter pulp in the small surface area, the fiber softness was increased and it had a positive result that the paper intensity was high. Other enzymes with the distribution of high molecular weight had an enzyme reaction on the most surfaces of cellulose. They were effective in eliminating the fuzz of hydrophile fine fibers and the freeness was increased.

  • In designing furniture and interior accessories, a computer graphic program is normally used over the whole process of manufacturing furniture from idea stage to actual manufacturing stage. It especially play an important role in the modeling process which comes before actual manufacturing stage. in such modeling process, the most important part is expression of quality of material used and surface treatment method. Expression of material quality of wood and surface finishing just like an actual picture enable the designers to analogize the feeling of furniture and interior accessories more exactly over the whole process of actual manufacturing and such a result has positive effect on development field of furniture and accessories.

  • This research was performed to evaluate the efficacy of phosphate removal from wastewater by surface-modified wood powder and to clarify the removal mechanisms. In this work, Pinus rigida which is abundant in Korea and has little economic value was used in preparation of the wood powder as a sorbent material. The experiments were carried out in 2 phases, isothermal adsorption test and column test. The results of adsorption test fitted well both the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal equations. Adsorption capacity was highest with the bark powder followed by the mixed powder(50% bark powder and 50% woody powder) and woody powder. Phosphate removal efficiency was as high as 98% at initial phosphate concentration of 50mg/L. Specific surface area of the powder increased following the experiment and phosphate removal was speculated to occur through adsorption mechanism. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDXA) revealed that the phosphate adsorbed onto the surface of the powder was in the form of strengite($FePO_{4}$).

  • In this study, the feasibility of utilizing wood chips from pitch pine (Pinus rigida) was evaluated for bioethanol production by an organosolv pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification. When wood chips from pitch wood were pretreated with 75% (v/v) ethanol and 1.7% sulfuric acid as a catalyst at H-factor 2000, average pulp yield was 43.3%, which pretreated wood fibers showed higher glucan (55.8%) and lower lignin (12.2%) contents than untreated control (43.9% glucan and 27.8% lignin). After enzymatic saccharification, the organosolv pulps with 56.2% delignification rate reached above 97% conversion rate of cellulose to glucose. These results indicated that increasing the delignification rate causes micro pores on the surface of organosolv pulps resulting in improved the accessibility of enzyme onto the substrate. Moreover, it was in agreement with the SEM examination of wood fibers.

  • In this study the effect of heartwood-coating (HCO), vapor-dam (VD), bark-remaining (BR) and bark-remaining-coating (BRC) treatments on the air circulating oven-drying characteristics of Japanese larch hollowed round-post was evaluated. The drying times of the hollowed round-posts for control, VD, HCO and BR specimens were 72, 168, 204 and 240 hours, respectively, from the initial MC to about 8% MC, which was recommended as the indoor in-use MC. The temperature in the hole of the VD specimen was lower than that of wood and the difference between air temperature in the hole and wood temperature became large during drying period. The vapor pressure of air in the hole was higher than that of inside wood for all specimens except VD specimen. The surface checks on all specimens were observed in increasing order of BR, BRC, UC, HCO and VD specimens.

  • To understand transition characteristics from wood to charcoal, Quercus variabilis wood was carbonized at 200, 250, 300, 340, 540 and $740^{\circ}C$, respectively. Heating value, pH and surface property by FT-IR spectroscopy of the carbonized charcoal were investigated. Heating value and pH increased with increasing carbonization temperature from 4500 cal/g and 4.3 of the control wood to 8,000 cal/g and 9 of the charcoal carbonized at $740^{\circ}C$, respectively. From FT-IR spectroscopy, the peaks from O-H, C-H and C-O stretching disappeared during carbonization at 540 and $740^{\circ}C$. Aromatic skeletal vibration at near $1,506{\sim}1,593cm^{-1}$ was repidly increased until $540^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that the chemical and physical characteristics of wood components in cell wall can be easily changed by increasing carbonization temperature and the carbonization seem to be incomplete at temperature below $540^{\circ}C$.

  • The present study examined the formaldehyde (HCOH) emission characteristic of various wood-based panel used in interior design, and measured changes in formaldehyde emission when a number of VOC reduction methods were applied. Formaldehyde emission showed a clear tendency of increase with the rise of temperature, and the concentration of formaldehyde emitted changed according to the preprocessing condition before measuring. Formaldehyde emission from wood board after bake out treatment was lower than that of the control group. When specimens were coated with urethane, cashew, water, oil stain, they generally showed the decrease of formaldehyde emission, although varying according to finishing material, and when edge sealing was applied the decrease became significant. $TiO_2$ coating was more effective in decreasing formaldehyde under ultraviolet lamps than under ordinary lamps. When the irradiation of ultraviolet lamps gets longer, formaldehyde emission decreased.

  • The feasibility of using stress-wave technique in the transverse direction for the assessment of early stages of decay was investigated using compression test specimens having different annual ring orientations subjected to decay by Tyromyces palustris for various time intervals. Decay detection, quantitative assessment of decay, and the prediction of residual strength of decayed wood with less than five percent weight loss can be feasible using stress-wave parameters (wave velocity, wave impedance, and stress-wave elasticity) and their percent reduction due to decay, measured by stress-wave technique in the transverse direction. The use of stress-wave technique in the transverse direction for the application of this technique to structural members in service is desirable, when considering the easiness of attachment of accelerometers of stress-wave measuring device on the surface of members and also accurate detection of localized decayed areas. In stress-wave technique in the transverse direction, stress-wave parameters measured were different according to the angles between wave propagation path and annual ring, due to the anisotropy of wood structure. Therefore, it is recommended to use percent reduction in stress-wave parameters instead of stress-wave parameters. This evaluation method using percent reduction in stress-wave parameters is ideal when it is impossible to observe annual ring orientation on the transverse surface of wood.
