A Study on the Influence of Courtesy of Avoidance of the Opposite Sex on Costume -Focused on Costumes of Man and Woman in the Late Chosun Dynasty- (남녀유별 예(禮)의식 [내외법(內外法)] 이 복식생활에 미친 영향 -조선후기 남녀 복식생활을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to help the understanding the characteristics in the costumes of men and women throughout the overall acceptance process of 'Naewaebub' in the late 'Chosun Dynasty' in which the notion of 'Naewae' is more prosperous than any other period in Korean history. Originally the distinction between man and woman was not intended to display the high and the low but to show the mutual respect according to each duty. As time goes on, that ideal became gradually changed to heighten the man and lower the women especially in 'Han' period of China. There was the ideal of distinction in the ancient times in Korea. Until 'Koryo Dinasty' the community has the system of blood-tied that put together maternal and paternal. 'Karye' was introduced in the late 'Koryo Dynasty' and accepted to the stereotype of morale in the 'Chosun Dynasty' and there seemed to be 'Samgang' and 'Oryun' at once. Many restrictions was imposed to behavior in women like rules of prohibition in attending the temple and concealment of woman's face and was recognized to rule of distinction between man and woman. Confucian life custom has been settled to Korean society throughout the late 16th century and 17th century and there were some appearances in the housing construction which divide the residences of man and woman. The characteristics in the costume from the avoidance of opposite sexes are clear in the structure of clothes changed from similar style to different style. The examples of those characteristics are as fellows. The costume in man was developed to advanced 'Pyoun-bokkwan' and 'Pyounbokpo' as social action of man prospered. Meanwhile the trousers which had been the same in the man and woman were separated to different trousers between man and woman. The costume life style of woman was changed to using the a hair whirl, hiding the face in the street and overlapping the innerwear under the skirt which was extension of woman's closed life style in late 'Chosun Dynasty'.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify and to examine costume terminologies in Samkuksaki(三國史記). yo ban(  ) and mal-yo(襪 ) were examined. It appeared that yo ( ) was the band of woman's skirt and ban ( ) was woman's sash worn over skirt. malyo (襪 ) were the leggings worn by women in Silla period.

  • This study was aimed at analyzing the woman costume presented in the korean modern novel by continuity, mixture, and discontinuity. For the costume analysis, the korean modern novel written from 1910 to 1945 were used. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Continuity: It doesn't mean discontinuity from the past but succession and development of the past, which explains about the costume culture for the period from 1910 to 1919. During this period, people tended to wear korean traditional costume in an effort to maintain their national identity. 2. Mixture: It means the effort to synthesize and develop past, present and future, which explains about the apparel for the period from 1920 to 1937. During this period, western culture was introduced much into korea to be established as part of our people's life. The new generation of women who studied abroad introduced the western costume throughout the cities, while the convenient western costume served to improve korean traditional costume. 3. Discontinuity: It means a conscious departure from the past as well as a critical reaction to the past, which explains about the costume culture for the period from 1938 to 1945. For this period, western costume was popular among new generation of women, while it was more diversified with increasing population wearing them. Many country men and women proceeded to wear the western costume.

  • This study has resulted in the followings applying costume's form and meaning to the theory of structuralism established by Saussure and the extensive and contained meanings of Roland Barthes. The kinds of woman's costume of the Romanesque era were not various, but those of the royal family and aristocratic class were more various and decorated better than the lowly persons. So their social levels could be differed by the forms of the costume they wore. Each form of costume was differed according to the structural elements and showed the feature that the form is the costume of the era and social position's differences of the wearers' sexes, levels, and vocations in the same era. Costume's analistic body was the costume's form selected according to the central analystic elements, this showed the meaning of the era's levels and classes, that is, the costume's structure was reflected by the era's features. In the structure of the woman's costume in the Romanesque era, many religious features were emphasized and the elements forming each analystic body were classified and meant the society's features. A Semiotic Analysis on 1930 s Costume -On Woman Character in the Novels- (1930년대 복식의 기호학적 분석 -신문소설의 여주인공을 중심으로-)

  • The study, "a semiotic analysis on 1930′s costume", is based on semiotic theory which analyze the meaning of signs. In the novels, "흙" and "삼대", character′s costume were used as a visual language that implies massages of character′s status, class, and the view of value. Analyzing the meaning of clothing signs, clothing could deliver the people′s informations to others and could be first things when people accept new value. The object of the studies are the novels, Hulk(흙) and Samdae(삼대) which are written by lee, Kwang-Soo and Yeom, Sang-Seob. In the novels, the social structure is classed as modern and traditional after we accept the western cultures and institutions. The traditional clothing, Han Bok, were dressed by the conservative woman. However, we could find the modernized woman dress with the western dress and the modified traditional style. According to the result of the research, we could find that clothing could be a sign which indicates value and also clothing is one of the first thing to change when people acquired new value.
