Nail withdrawal tests were conducted on clear wood of radiata pine. Nails were driven into the earlywood and latewood zones of each specimen, and nail withdrawal tests were then performed. Nail withdrawal loads were strongly dependent on earlywood and latewood and on nail position. The average load values for nail withdrawal in both the tangential and longitudinal directions were higher for latewood than for earlywood. Linear and nonlinear regression analyses of nail withdrawal load with specific gravity showed no discernible differences. Good correlations were obtained between nail withdrawal load and specific gravity.
Shallow water withdrawal systems have been replaced with a selected withdrawal system to keep stable raw water quality in spite of occurrence of algae and muddy inflow. Before reconstruction of the water intake tower in Yongdam reservoir supplying water to Gosan water treatment facility, we have predicted flow patterns of inflowing water into the water intake tower for various withdrawal conditions. It has been predicted that the water in the withdrawal layer is significantly inflowed from the front with fast velocity into the water intake tower irrespective of withdrawal depth, while the water away from the withdrawal layer is withdrawed a little from the side with slow velocity.
Morphine or butorphanol was continuously infused into cerebroventricle (i.c.v.) with the rate of $26\;nmol/{\mu}l/h$ for 3 days, and the withdrawal from opioid was rendered 7 hrs after the stopping of infusion. The expression of physical dependence produced by these opioids was evaluated by measuring the naloxone-precipitated withdrawal signs. The withdrawal signs produced in animals dependent on butorphanol (kappa opioid receptor agonist) were similar to those of morphine (mu opioid receptor agonist). Besides the behavioral modifications, opioid withdrawal affected G protein expression in the central nervous system. The G-protein ${\alpha}-subunit$ has been implicated in opioid tolerance and withdrawal. The effects of continuous infusion of morphine or butorphanol on the modulation of G protein ${\alpha}-subunit$ mRNA were investigated by using in situ hybridization study. In situ hybridization showed that the levels of $G\;{\alpha}s$ and $G\;{\alpha}i$ were changed during opioid withdrawal. Specifically, the level of $G\;{\alpha}s$ mRNA was decreased in the cortex and cerebellar granule layer during the morphine and butorphanol withdrawal. The level of $G\;{\alpha}i$ mRNA was decreased in the dentate gyrus and cerebellar granule layer during the morphine withdrawal. However, the level of $G\;{\alpha}i$ mRNA was significantly elevated during the butorphanol withdrawal. These results suggest that region-specific changes of G protein ${\alpha}-subunit$ mRNA were involved in the withdrawal from morphine and butorphanol.
Nail withdrawal tests were conducted on clear wood of domestic small diameter logs. Nails were driven into the cross and longitudinal sections of each specimen, then nail withdrawal tests were performed. Nail withdrawal loads are strongly dependent on the direction of nail positions. The average load values for the nail withdrawal both in cross section and longitudinal section are higher in high specific gravity (SG) wood of sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima Carr.) than those in low SG wood of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) and pitch pine (Pinus rigida Mill.). The average ratio of the nail withdrawal loads for side-grain and end-grain are higher in the low SG wood than that in the high SG of wood. Both linear and non-linear regression analyses were conducted on nail withdrawal load with SG, good correlations were obtained between nail withdrawal load and SG.
Purpose: This study aimed to provide basic data of nursing student's knowledge and attitudes towards the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. Methods: Nursing students from two universities in J province participated in this study. The descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used to analyse the data. Results: The nursing students' knowledge of the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment was 7.42 out of 16. The participants' attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment was 50.03 out of 95 which was 2.64 in its mean rating. Regarding their knowledge of the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, nursing students whose family members experienced the life-sustaining treatment had significantly higher knowledge than those students whose not (p<.001). Those participants who support patients or their families' right to decide the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment had positive attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (p=.007). In addition, the knowledge of and attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment showed significant correlations (r=.639, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that systematic and professional education is needed for nursing students to equip positive attitude toward the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment in nursing practice.
Screw withdrawal test was carried out on the face and edge of domestic particleboard and medium density fiberboard in order to evaluate optimum pilot hole diameter. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Maximum withdrawal strengths on the face and edge of particleboard were obtained with pilot hole diameters at about 50% of root diameters of screw. 2. Maximum withdrawal strength on the face and edge of medium density fiberboard were obtained with pilot hole diameters that were about 60% and 50% of root diameters of screw, respectively. 3. Withdrawal strength showed about 91% of maximum withdrawal strength when pilot holes were not pre bored at particleboard. but when pilot holes at 90% of root diameter of screw withdrawal strength showed about as 51.3% of maximum withdrawal strength. 4. Withdrawal strength showed about 88% of maximum strength when pilot holes were not used, but withdrawal strength indicated 55.4% of maximum strength in case of 90% of root diameters of screw. 5. Maximum withdrawal strength on the face of particleboard was about 70.5% higher than that of the edge, and however medium density fiberboard was about 19.6% higher than that of the edge.
In this article, withdrawal resistances of axially loaded self-tapping screws on wood products made by Korean Larch were predicted with existing estimation equation, and compared with experimental test data. The research was required because no design methodology for the withdrawal resistance of self-tapping screw is present in Korean building code (KBC). First, the withdrawal resistance of wood screw was predicted to use the withdrawal design value estimation equation in National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS). Second, three types of wood products, solid wood, cross-laminated timber (CLT) and plywood, were utilized for withdrawal test. For decades, various engineered wood products have been developed, especially cross-laminated timber (CLT) and hybrid timber composites such as timber composites of solid wood and plywood. Therefore, CLT and plywood were also investigated in this study as well as solid wood. Finally, the predicted values were compared with experimentally tested values. As the results, the tested values of solid wood and CLT were higher than the predicted values. In contrast, it is inaccurate to predict withdrawal resistance of plywood since prediction was higher than tested values.
The purpose of this study was to explore the general tendencies of maternal parenting stress, coping style, marital satisfaction and preschool children's withdrawal behavior as well as to investigate the effects of maternal parenting stress, coping style, and marital satisfaction on preschool children's withdrawal behavior. The participants involved 86 mothers of preschoolers and their teachers from one day care center and two kindergartens in Seoul and Gyeong-gi province. Maternal parenting stress, coping style and marital satisfaction were assessed by the mothers' self-reports, whereas the preschool children's withdrawal behavior was assessed by the teacher's report. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, t-test and multiple regressions. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS ver. 15.0. The major findings were summarized as follows: There were no differences between maternal parenting stress, coping style and marital satisfaction between mothers of boys and girls. Further, there were differences in preschool children's withdrawal behavior between boys and girls; girls showed more withdrawal behaviors than boys. Typical stress due to parenting, outsider's help coping style and marital satisfaction explained the withdrawal behavior of preschool children. As the level of typical stress increase in mothers, preschool children showed increased withdrawal behavior. Moreover, as mothers used fewer outsider's help coping style and had lower marital satisfaction, their preschool children's showed increased withdrawal behavior. In conclusion, maternal parenting stress, coping style and marital satisfaction significantly influence on preschool children's withdrawal behavior.
Purpose: Abrupt abstinence from alcohol in cause of chronic alcohol addiction can trigger alcohol withdrawal syndrome. The authors studied the effect of post-operative alcohol withdrawal syndrome in patients who require intensive care due to trauma. Methods: For the study group, we selected 70 patients who had undergone emergency surgery from May 2003 to March 2007 due to trauma and who had been treated with prophylactic thiamine. Data was collected retrospectively. We excluded those who extended their hospital stay for other than traumatic causes, those who died within 3 days of surgery after trauma, those who transferred to other institutions, and those who received a psychiatric diagnosis. Patient groups were determined by the existence or the non-existence of withdrawal syndrome. Age, sex, injury mechanism, mortality, complications, durations of hospital stay and intensive care, use of mechanical ventilator, and sedative use were investigated. A Chi-square test and The Mann-Whitney method were used for statistical analysis in this study. Results: Twenty-four (24) patients from the 58 who had an ISS of 16 or more showed alcohol withdrawal syndrome, and men were shown to be affected with the syndrome significantly more than women. Although ISS was higher in the group with alcohol withdrawal syndrome, statistically, the difference was not significant (P<0.08). The total hospital stay in the patient group with alcohol withdrawal syndrome was on average 10 days longer. However, the difference was not significant (P<0.054). The duration of intensive care in the patient group with alcohol withdrawal syndrome was significantly longer (P<0.029). The patients with alcohol withdrawal syndrome showed no significant difference in the duration of mechanical ventilator use (P<0.783), or in the duration of sedative use (P<0.284). Respiratory distress, pneumonia, upper airway infection, sepsis, acute renal failure, and mortality in the alcohol withdrawal syndrome group were investigated, but no statistically significant difference were noted. Conclusion: We found that the duration of intensive care in chronic alcohol abusers was longer due to the development of alcohol withdrawal syndrome. We also discovered that, when the patients overcame the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome after intensive care, no difference was found in the frequency of developing complications, the morbidity, and the mortality. Therefore, we conclude that intensive care in trauma patients who are chronic alcohol abusers decreases the incidence of complications found in patients with post-operative alcohol withdrawal syndrome and does not adversely impact the prognoses for those patients.
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of peer support on conduct behavior and withdrawal and to investigate the mediating effect of negative automatic thought. The subjects included 461 students(boys 51%, girls 49%) from the 1st to 3rd grades of middle school in Seoul. Conduct behavior and withdrawal was measured by the Korean Youth Self Report and the Conners-Wells'-Adolescent Self Report Scales. Negative automatic thoughts were measured by the Korean Children Youth Automatic Thoughts Scale. Using Amos 20, structural equation modeling was conducted. The findings of the structural equation modeling was that peer support had an impact on conduct behavior and withdrawal. Peer support contributed to a reduction of negative automatic thoughts. Negative automatic thoughts had a mediating effect between peer support and withdrawal or conduct. We suggest that peer support affects conduct behavior and withdrawal through negative automatic thought. We also found gender differences; compared with girls, boys received less support from peers. They also had lower levels of negative automatic thoughts and withdrawal than girls. The further study should be considered to provide more correlation factors of peer support.
