Design and Implementation of the subscriber MAC protocol in the BWA system

  • The broadband wireless access industry, which provides high-tate network connections to stationary sites, has matured to the point at which it now has a standard for second-generation wireless metropolitan area networks. IEEE Standard 802.16, with its WirelessMAN air interface, set the stage for widespread and effective deployments worldwide. This paper presents an implementation of media access control that can be applied to BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) system. Medium access control (MAC) is a key issue in multi-access networks where a common channel is shared by many users. The designed MAC prototype roughly consists of MAC Hardware and MAC Software. The MAC Hardware part includes timing process, MAC transmission control, MAC reception control, and CRC/HCS process. The MAC Software part includes control of MAC signaling, network interface, and Physical (PHY) control. The designed MAC protocol will be integrated with the PHY of BWA in future and we can test overall system performance of MAC and PHY.

A Remote Firmware Update Mechanism for a TDMA-based Bidirectional Linear Wireless Sensor Network (양방향 통신을 지원하는 시분할 기반 선형 무선 센서 네트워크를 위한 원격 펌웨어 업데이트 방법)

  • A wireless sensor network inherently comprises a plurality of sensor nodes widely deployed for sensing environmental information. To add new functions or to correct some faulty functions of an existing wireless sensor network, the firmware for each sensor node needs to be updated. Firmware update would be quite troublesome if it requires the gathering, reprogramming, and redeploy of all of already deployed sensor nodes. Over-the-air programming (OTA) facilitates the firmware update process, thereby allowing convenient maintenance of an already-deployed sensor network. This paper proposes and implements a remote firmware update mechanism for a TDMA-based wireless sensor network, in which the firmware for sensor nodes constituting the TDMA-based sensor network can be easily updated and the update process can be conveniently monitored from a remote site. We verify the validity of the proposed firmware update method via experiments and introduce three wireless sensor networks installed in outdoor sites in which the proposed firmware update mechanism has been exploited.

  • This paper is concerned with a performance analysis using a wired/wireless hybrid network based on Common Industrial Protocol(CIP). For the performance analysis, the data transmission time, average end-to-end delay and throughput between DeviceNet and the wireless devices are investigated. The experimental results show the performance in terms of the polling/COS service time of CIP based hybrid network.

  • In this paper, we propose the localization algorithm for the cooperative behavior of the swarm robots based on WSN (Wireless Sensor Network). The proposed method is as follows: First, we measure positions of the L-bot (Leader robot) and F-bots (Follower robots) by using the APIT (Approximate Point In Triangle) and the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication). Second, we measure relative positions of the F-bots against the pre-measured position of the L-bot by using trilateration. Then, to revise a position error caused by noise of the wireless signal, we use the particle filter. Finally, we show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method though some simulations.

  • This paper deals with monitoring sensor robot control system for the application of wireless sensor network. In order to control the direction and speed of robot via remote sensing environment, low power, low weight sensors with ad-hoc networking between robots' sensors have been used. These wireless sensor network based robot monitoring system can be used for remote observation and detection of robots in the areas such as factories, power plants and other dangerous areas which are difficult for human access.

  • In this paper, a dynamic GTS allocation method of wireless control networks is proposed for the use of factory automation using IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol. A superframe of IEEE 802.15.4 is applied to the transmission method of real-time periodic I/O data of wireless control systems within the limited time in factory environment. The method is proposed for efficient transmission of real-time periodic I/O traffic. The simulation results show the average network utilization and available I/O node numbers could be increased by the proposed method.

  • An integrated ship area network has functionality of remote control and autonomous management of various sensors and instruments embedded or boarded in a ship. For such environment, an wireless bridge is essential to transmit control and/or managing information to sensors or instruments from a central integrated ship area network station. In this paper, one of reliable schemes of WiMedia based wireless bridge using relay cooperative transmission using WiMedia distributed MAC protocol is proposed to increase a communication reliability between cluster headers, irrespective of channel variation. Simulation results show that the proposed wireless bridge using relay cooperative transmission scheme increases communication reliability.

  • Recently, many researches have been conducted on the aviation industry to replace the wire harness cable between the avionics of the aircraft with the wireless network. In this paper, we present an Event-Based Simulator for Wireless Avionics Intra-Communications (ES-WAIC) that can verify core technologies of wireless networks and efficiently integrate different layers of the network. ES-WAIC is developed to enhance the readability between the real time control application developers of the higher layer and the network layer developers. Specifically, the practical implement relies on an event-based programming concept to increase portability and compatibility that can be applied to the realistic low-power wireless embedded networks. ES-WAIC implements the overall system layers including the wireless channel modeling of the 4.4GHz band, the physical layer, the medium access control, the network, and the application layer of wireless avionics intra-communications.

  • This paper proposes a wireless management system for a pet dog using wireless sensor network. The developed intelligent wireless management system is compose of a central control system, auto-feeder, miniguidance robot, and wireless sensing devices. The developed system uses three types of sensed data such as light, temperature, md sounds from a pet dog and surrounded environment respectively. The presented design method using these data provides an efficient way to controlling and monitoring the pet dog. The implemented system can be used as a design framework of portable device for the pet management.
