Feature Extraction of Simulated fault Signals in Stator Windings of a High Voltage Motor and Classification of Faulty Signals

  • In the case of the fault in stator windings of a high voltage motor. it facilitates certain destructive characteristics in insulations. This will result in a decreased reliability in power supplies and will prevent the generation of electricity, which will result in huge economic losses. This study simulates motor windings using normal windings and four faulty windings for an actual fault in stator winding of a high voltage motor. The partial discharge signals produced in each faulty winding were measured using an 80 PF epoxy/mica coupler sensor. In order to quantified signal waves its a way of feature extraction for each faulty signal, the signal wave of winding was quantified to measure the degree of skewness shape and kurtosis, which are both types of statistical parameters, using a discrete wavelet transformation method for each faulty type. Wave types present different types lot each faulty type, and the skewness and kurtosis also present different quantified values. The result of feature extraction was used as a preprocessing stage to identify a certain fault in stater windings. It is evident that the type of faulty signals can be classified from the test results using faulty signals that were randomly selected from the signal, which was not applied in the training after the training and learning period, by applying it to a back-propagation algorithm due to the supervising and learning method in a neural network in order to classify the faulty type. This becomes an important basis for studying diagnosis methods using the classification of faulty signals with a feature extraction algorithm, which can diagnose the fault of stator windings in the future.

  • In this paper, a novel method has been proposed by use of HY-Pockels sensor for the detection of PD in GITR(Gas Insulated Transformer) in order to improve reliability and to overcome the shortcomings of other techniques which are currently employed. For this work, different types of the test specimen, simulating the winding of the real GITR, have been designed and fabricated to generate the PD. And then, the detection of PD has been realized by conventional methods according to IEC 270 and also the proposed novel sensor as well. Afterwards, their results are well compared to understand the correlation between the nature of the defects in the winding and their PD pattern.

  • This paper investigated application of fractional-slot concentrated-winding axial flux permanent magnet machines for wind turbines. Design criteria of cogging torque and voltage regulation was firstly proposed for this kind of application. Fractional winding has small cogging torque which is highlight for wind turbines, but slot leakage inductance would increase voltage regulation, which is an important performance index of generators. By varying slot opening, cogging torque and slot leakage inductance could be adjusted. In this paper, cogging torque and inductances were calculated by both analytical and finite element methods. Voltage regulation was studied by two-axis model under unity-power-factor load and verified by transient finite element analysis.

Implementation of an Inductively Coupled EM Probe System for PD Diagnosis

  • In recent years, various types of partial discharge (PD) methods such as capacitive, inductive, electromagnetic, and acoustic coupling techniques have been developed for diagnosing rotating machines. An electromagnetic (EM) probe, which is an inductively coupled type of sensor, is required for detecting corona and internal discharges during off-line tests. In this study, a new technique for enhancing the measurement sensitivities for corona and internal discharge based on an EM inductive position sensor is proposed. An EM probe that winds wires around horseshoe-shaped and cylindershaped ferrites as helices is designed and optimized for the implementation of off-line PD monitoring of the stator winding of a rotating machine. The measurement system based on this design is implemented, and it is verified from the results of the experiment performed in this study that the probe provides similar performance as existing commercial products.

  • This paper describes the effect of secondary surges entering low voltage side on the primary winding of pole transformers. After having connected the secondary winding by 4 different methods, surge voltages were applied to the low voltage side, and voltage waveforms were measured at a surge applied point and a high voltage bushing terminal. The measured voltages were compared by the waveform, magnitude and damping characteristics with each connection. As a result, the voltage waveforms induced by the secondary surges were different one another with each connection, especially, the conventional connecting method for 2 voltage sources was far different from the present method supplying only 1 voltage source in shape of the voltage waveform.

  • Fractional horse power single phase induction motors have no starting torque their own. So there are several ways of starting single phase induction motors. The most common type is the starting capacitor installed in series with the auxiliary winding to increase the starting torque. Also, the auxiliary winding is disconnected once the speed of the motor reaches 70 to 80 [%] of the rated speed. In the conventional systems, this function is conducted by a centrifugal switch. But the mechanical centrifugal switch has many problems such as switch malfunction. This paper presents the new methods of electronic starting switch by inductor to overcome these shortcomings of centrifugal switch.

  • We describe the characteristic of LVI test system and methods to detect the deformation of windings in the power transformers. As the front rise time of recurrent-surge generator pulse less than 1000ns and the peak value of pulse is about 500V, we have the good results of detecting winding deformation in the LVI test of transformer. And we discuss the application of LVI test method and the condition of RSG pulse through results of in one and three pole transformers under Lab. tests.

대형발전기 고정자권선 절연재료의 열 사이클에 의한 열화에 관한 연구 (A study on the heat cycle aging of insulation materials in large generator stator windings)

  • Heat cycle aging of insulating materials in large generator stator winding has been investigated using both on-line and off-line test methods. On this study, principally, off-line test against actual generator in service was carried out to acquire information about polarization index(PI) and dissipation factor, dissipation factor tip-up, maximum partial discharge for the purpose of remnant breakdown voltage and life assessment. It was found from the tests that both dissipation factor and maximum partial discharge decreased with the increase of operating hours and starting numbers. It was found from off-line tests that the remnant breakdown voltage had a strong relationship with both dissipation factor and maximum partial discharge the remnant breakdown voltage as a results of both operating hours and starting number and the nondestructive tests were proposed as parameters which can predict the remnant lifetime of insulating materials in large generator stator windings.   • Inverter driven induction motors with high speed switching and advanced PWM techniques are widely used for variable speed applications. Recently, the insulation failures of stator winding have attracted much concern due to high dv/dt of IGBT PWM inverter output. In this paper, the detailed insulation test results of 26 low-voltage induction motors are presented. Six different types of insulation techniques are applied to 26 motors. The insulation characteristics are analyzed with partial discharge, inception voltage, AC current, and dissipation factor tests. Also, breakdown tests by high voltage pulses are performed. From the above test data the effects due to different wires and insulation techniques on the insulation characteristics of low-voltage induction motors are compared and analyzed. The insulation technique to enhance the insulation strength is suggested from the test results.

Design Techniques for Reducing Cogging Torque in Permanent Magnet Flux Switching Machine

  • Permanent magnet flux switching motor (PMFSM) is a novel double salient machine which employs PMs instead of field winding for excitation. PMFSM contains only one set of armature winding, thereby features simple control strategy, low cost power inverter and substantial high efficiency. Due to the unique double salient structure and operation principle, the generated cogging torque in PMFSM is critical and quite different compared to the traditional PM machines. This paper presents and investigates various design techniques for reducing cogging torque in PMFSM. Firstly, an analytical model is proposed to study the influence of different methods on cogging torque. Then the optimal design parameters for minimizing cogging torque are determined by the analytical model, which significantly reduces the computational efforts. At last, the cogging torque with different design approaches are simulated by FEA along with the average output electromagnetic torque, which validates the analysis above.
