  • Poplars and willow were planted to identify suitable species and varieties for landfill reclamation at the Sudokwon Landfill Site in 1997. Survival rate, growth performance, vitality, visible foliar injury by pollutants, fungi, and leaf insects, and stem borer damage have been investigated for 10 clones of 4 poplar species and 2 clones of one willow species from 1997 to 2005. The average survival rates of poplar and willow clones were drastically decreased from 90% in 1997 to 53% in 2005. Among poplar species, Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa showed the highest mean survival rate of 66%, while Populus koreana ${\times}$ P. nigra var. italica and Populus euramericana were the lowest of 41%, respectively in 2005. Clivus, which is one of the clones from Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa, showed the highest survival rate of 73%. For mean height, Ec028 clone(P. euramericana) showed the highest of $11.2m{\pm}2.1m$ and followed by Clivus of $11.0m{\pm}2.0m$. Clone 131-27(Salix alba) was the lowest of $7.8m{\pm}1.6m$. Vitality, defoliation, visible foliar damage, and stem borer damage were significantly different among clones. Most of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa and Salix alba clones seemed to have strong vitality and to be tolerant to various stresses at the site. However, Populus nigra ${\times}$ P. maximowiczii was sensitive to the stress. We have selected 5 clones in total: Clivus as the best clone for waste landfill reclamation, and additionally two Salix clones 131-25, 131-27 and two clones of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa (72-9, 72-16) have been selected. These five clones could be supplied for planting at sites having an environment similar to the Sudokwon Landfill Site.

  • Most of the work done in developing Z39.50 was carried out in the basic protocol framework. It becomes apparent that some problems would be quite unacceptable in implementing and reinforcing the networked information retrieval and that it needs some other arrangement such as ISP. This article discussed the current modifications like ISPs by reviewing the unique characters of Z39.50 and the overall design of a client-server search systems, and also distinguished the Z39.50 clients that have been developed as non-profits from those of profits in the perspective of Z39.50 function-expanding.

  • When we look at the pattern techniques of wooden furniture in the 19th century Joeson Dynasty, we see that furniture patterns in the main living room were showy and colorful while furniture patterns in the library room, where noble men used to study, were natural and moderate, retaining the actual color of the material without any artificial coloring. Even the serial patterns in the Hwe-Jang technique, Which were used rarely, used moderate techniques. such as weaving in patterns with colorless woods - willow and black persimmon ets. - rather than using excessive techniques. However, considering the marquetry&intarsia technique of ceramic and the silver string intarsia technique of metal then current, wood work must also have been technically advanced. Korean modern wood furniture needs remedies to improve the standard of sound wood work techniques. This study shows that pattern unit production, composition techniques, and color effects etc. Using colored patterns bars, by improving the pattern composition techniques of Marquetry&Intarsia, can be substituted for the production logic of modern manufactured furniture.

  • We evaluated the restoration effect by introducing willows as a means of controlling invasions of giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) on a riparian site. Our preliminary survey demonstrated that a problematic exotic species, giant ragweed and the representative riparian species, Salix koreensis are in competitive exclusive relationship. We planted willows at 1 m intervals on the bank of the Dongmun stream at Munsan, Paju, in Central Western Korea as an experimental restoration practice. We installed two 50 m $\times$ 5 m sized restored and non-restored for this experimental study. The non-restored plots were located on river banks, which were covered with concrete blocks and left in itself without any treatment. The height of willow was measured after each of three consecutive growing seasons and compared with the height of the giant ragweed. Although the height of Salix gracilistyla did not achieve the height of the giant ragweed, the height of S. koreensis surpassed that of giant ragweed in the third year after introduction. The results were also reflected in the relative light intensity on the herb layer of willow stand, and thereby the relative light intensities of stands, which were dominated by S. koreensis or restored by introducing S. koreensis, 1.99 $\pm$ 0.33 (%, mean $\pm$ SD) and 1.92 $\pm$ 0.50 (%, mean $\pm$ SD), respectively were lower than those in the stands treated by S. gracilistyla, 3.01 $\pm$ 0.43 (%, mean $\pm$ SD). The giant ragweed stands receive full sunlight as there are no any vegetation layers higher than the herb layer formed by the giant ragweed. As the result of Detrended Correspondence analysis ordination based on naturally established vegetation, the stands dominated by willows and giant ragweed showed different species composition between both stands. The species composition of the restoratively treated sites resembled the reference sites more than the non-treated sites. The species diversity (H') of the sites restored by introducing S. koreensis and S. gracilistyla was higher than the non-restored site dominated by A. trifida. On the basis of our results, the restoration of riparian vegetation equipped with integrated features could contribute not only to the control of exotic plants including giant ragweed but also to ensure the diversity and stability of riverine ecosystems.

  • This study was carried out to investigate natural insectifuge materials from tree extractives in order to substitute for organic synthetic insecticides for food wrapping corrugated board. Tree samples were collected, extracted, fractionated with hexane, $CH_2Cl_2$, ethylacetate(EtOAc) and $H_2O$, and then freezed dried for further study. EtOAc or $H_2O$ fractions were chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column for isolation and purification, and the isolated compounds were characterized by spectroscopic tools such as NMR and MS. Crude extractives of EtOAc and $H_2O$ fractions were added to the printing ink for corrugated board with the concentration of 2% or 3% based on the weight of the ink, then the prepared ink was printed on the corrugated board to be used for evasion test using larva of indian meal moth(Plodia interpunctella(Hubner)). Robtin, dihydrorobinetin and leucorobinetinidin were isolated from the wood extractives of black locust(Robinia pseudoacacia) and the bark of poplar(Populus alba $\times$ glandulosa) contained many kinds of compounds such as (+)-catechin, naringenin, aromadendrin, eriodictyol, sakuranetin and its glycoside, taxifolin, neosaturanin, salireposide, p-coumaric acid and aesculin. Much of (+)-catechin was isolated from the bark extractives of willow(Salix koreensis) in addition to (+)-gallocatechin and p-coumaric acid and the bark of weeping willow(Salix babylonica) also contained (+)-catechin, (+)-gallocatechin, dihydromyricetin and myricetin.

  • Changes in land-use can affect soil organic matter content and fertility. We compared total soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations, soil respiration, and nitrogen availability under three land-use types in central Korea; conversion of old rice field to natural willow-maple (Salix-Acer) forest, conversion of old field to artificial Korean pine (Pines koraiensis) forest, and indigenous oak (Quercus spp.) forest. After 20 years of fallow the area of rice field conversion to forest had higher soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations in the soil depth of 0-10cm and 10-20cm than the areas of field conversion to Korean pine forest and indigenous forest. In general, soil carbon and nitrogen concentrations decreased with soil depth. Organic matter accumulation as a balance of input and decomposition seemed to be higher in the soil of previous rice field, and carbon and nitrogen accumulation was largely confined to the topsoil. Soil respiration rates were greatest at the area of rice field conversion to forest, and appeared to be related to soil carbon and soil moisture. Soil nitrogen availability measured by the ion exchange resin bag method differed significantly among land-use types; soil inorganic nitrogen ($NH_4{^+}+NO_3{^-}$) and ammonium availability were highest in the soil under indigenous oak forest followed by conversion of old field to artificial Korean pine forest and conversion of old field to natural willow-maple forest.

  • The fire risk and fire safety of four types of wood were comprehensively evaluated according to Chung's equation-XII. White ash, willow, fraxinus mandshurica, and sagent cherry trees were selected as test specimens. A cone calorimetery (ISO 5660-1) was used to examine the combustion characteristics of the test piece, and finally, the fire risk rating (FRR) was predicted using the fire risk index-XII (FRI-XII). The predicted fire performance index-X (FPI-X) and fire growth index-X (FGI-X) ranged from 469.03 to 1109.73 s2/kW and 0.0009 to 0.0280 kW/s2, respectively. Additionally, the fire performance index-XI (FPI-XI) and fire growth index-XI (FGI-XI) ranged from 0.41 to 0.97 and 1.11 to 3.11, respectively. The fire risk index-XII (FRI-XII), representing a fire risk rating, showed that the fire risk of frasxinus mandsurica tree (FM) was very high at 7.60 (fire risk rating: D). And it was compared with Chung's equation-IX, fire risk index-IX (FRI-IX). The fire risk ratings according to FRI-IX and FRI-XII were generally high for willow and frasxinus mandsurica trees. Additionally, the results of FRI-XII and FRI-IX had a similar relationship, and the size of each fire safety rating closely matched each other.

  • Recent years, nationwide projects for ecological restoration are implemented with emerging issues on the stream ecosystem. In order to enhance effectiveness of the ecosystem restoration and reduce negative impact, the appraisal of effectiveness through the follow-up monitoring and the adaptive management process are executed in consecutive phase. In this study, planning phase, monitoring and adaptive management in Hakui stream which is part of An Yang stream restoration project is introduced as representative ongoing case of effective adaptive management. The aim of this study is to verify the adaptive management process and suggest direction of effective restoration. Restoration project of Hakui stream resulted in increasing number and diversity of species (vegetation, fish, bird, invertbrates, amphibian and reptilia) according to monitoring from 2004 to 2013, and enhancing natural river landscape by evaluation of river naturalness among 2001(before restoration), 2007 (after), 2015 (recent). However, excessive vegetation expansion or sediment deposition on channel over time caused unexpected results such as terrestrialization or degradation of habitats. Adaptive management action such as removing disturbance species (Humulus japonicus)(2007), coppicing willow (2007), release of march snail (2007), creation of wetland (2014) were implemented based on monitoring results. And then appraisal of management action was discussed.
