  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the relationship of perceived health, coping strategies, dependency, suicidal ideation and depression widowed elders, and to identify predictors of depression in this population. Method: The research design for this study was a descriptive survey design using a convenience sampling. Data collection was done using self-questionnaire with 162 elders from welfare centers for senior citizens located in 3 cities, Seoul, Gangneung and Seosan. Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS Win 12.0 Program were used to analyze the data. Results: Depression had significant negative correlations with perceived health (r=-.525, p<.001), and coping strategies (r=-.253, p=.005) and positive correlations with dependency (r=.430, p<.001), and suicidal ideation (r=.473, p<.001). The explained variance for depression was 47.5%. Of the variables, perceived health (${\beta}=-.237$, p=.003), suicidal ideation (${\beta}=.398$, p<.001) and dependency (${\beta}=.341$, p<.001) significantly predicted the degree of depression. Conclusion: Findings from this study provide a comprehensive understanding of depression and related factors for widowed elders in Korea. However, further study with a larger random sample and more a detailed research design is necessary.

  • This study examines how path dependency of working poor labor market segmented from the primary and the secondary labor market affects employment and quality of employment of working poor. It Further examines how path dependency makes working poor to remain in the labor market and makes it difficult for them to escape from a vicious poverty cycle. Data is based on the $3{\sim}7th$ Korea Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS). Markov's transition probability and discrete-time hazard analysis are used for analysis. This study finds that Korea labor market is divided into three parts; the primary labor market, the secondary labor market and the working poor labor market. The proportion of employed poor has been reduced, but the proportion of non economically-active working poor has been increased and has become the main group among the working poor. This shows that labor demand of working poor is fundamentally lacking and there are structural barriers that block working poor's employment itself. The regression analysis shows that the longer working poor labor market participation is, the lower poverty-exit rate. This is an evidence of vicious poverty cycle that the poor have little chance to exit from working poor labor market, once they step into it. Therefore, the longer their participation in poor labor market, the more likely they would move only within the closed working poor labor market. Consequently, it is necessary to fundamentally reform labor market structure and to alleviate negative perception and discrimination about the poor labor while activating labor demand.

  • This research purposed to analyse the diversity of the long-term care system based on the dependency/independency of the aged. For this purpose, we divided the long-term care systems to three components; form of benefit, generosity of benefit and delivery system. Form of benefit is whether the benefit is cash or in-kind, and the generosity of benefit is related to the level and coverage of benefit. The last concerned to focus on provider and user selection. According to this, we tried to make an ideal type of long-term care in the perspective of citizenship and consumerism. As a result, we established four types of long-term care system; active citizen type, passive citizen type, latent citizen type, and family dependent type. And we investigated Austria, Sweden, Germany and Korea for each type empirically.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the variables of parenting styles and dependency on the smart phone affect college students' satisfaction to campus life, to seek the better ways for the college students to fit into the new environment, and to offer the practical tips based on our findings. In this study, we applied the regression analysis to verify the relationship among the variables related to the satisfaction to university life and the mediating effect of dependency on the smart phone. The results of this study suggest that the positive rearing attitude, which is the subfactor of parenting styles, has a negative effect on the dependency on the smart phone, and that dependency on the smart phone has a negative effect on the satisfaction to college life. At the same time it is found out that the negative rearing attitude has a positive effect on dependency on the smart phone, and that dependency on the smart phone has a negative effect on the satisfaction to the college life. In addition, the dependency on the smart phone has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between the positive/negative rearing attitudes and dependency on the smart phone. Based on these findings, we recommended the better ways to improve college students' satisfaction to their college lives.

  • This study intends to analyze the trend of employment rate of men aged 55~64 in 15 OECD countries from 1980 to 2005. Furthermore, this study means to examine the determinants of men aged 55~64 in 15 OECD countries to support the labor force participation among them. The analysis is based on the data of OECD, ILO and LIS. The analysis method is Arellano and Bond(1981)'s difference GMM which used instrumental variables by dynamic panel model which estimates state dependency of labor market participation and individual panel's heterogeneity. The main results from this analysis are summarized in three points. First, the employment rates of men aged 55~64 had decreased until the middle of the 1990s, while that has been increasing since 1995. Second, the sate dependency strongly worked in the employment rates of 55~64 men and positive period effect was observed for 1980~2005. This study cannot find the pull effect of public pension, while labor market push effect have negatively affected. Third, temporary work rates had contributed to increase the employment rate of men aged 55~64 for 1996~2005. The poverty has become the mechanism of the labor.
