  • To establish the soil management system for the efficient sod production, survey on the growth of zoysiagrass by different soil managements was conducted in repeated cultivation field with regard to soil physical properties. Soils were subjected to four types of management methods, which include (1) rolling (2) topdressing (3) topdressing + rolling (4) topdressing + tillage + rolling. The topdressing + tillage + rolling treatment significantly ameliorated soil physical properties such as bulk density, porosity and solid phase as compared to rolling and topdressing + rolling treatments, and was not significantly different from the topdressing treatment. Further growth and density of zoysiagrass except for the root dry weight in topdressing + tillage + rolling treatment were significantly higher than that only in rolling treatment. Topdressing + tillage + rolling treatment significantly increased the number of shoot as compared to the other treatments. Therefore, combined topdressing and tillage soil management practice should be conducted for the production of zoysiagrass in repeated cultivation field.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic understandings for proper management of zoysiagrass fairways. Mowing intervals of 2, 4 and 6-days, with and without aeration were compared at two fertility levels. Turfgrass quality, growth and pest infestation were evaluated. Turf density, number of tillers, leaf width and resiliency were significantly affected by mowing frequency. Turfgrass plots mowed every 2-day had greater density, tillering, and resiliency but had narrower leaf width compared to other mowing treatments. Clipping dry weight with every 2-day mowing increased in the early stage of mowing treatment regardless of fertilizer application rates but gradually decreased in the later stage of mowing treatment compared to every 4 or 6-day mowings. The dry weight of above-ground part was not affected by mowing frequency, but that of underground part was significantly higher for every 6-day mowing frequency(3.3kg/day/m2) compared to every 2 or 4-day mowings. The organic mater content in soil was not different among mowing treatments but it was significantly reduced by the core aerification treatment, indicating significant effect of core aerification on thatch decomposition. Occurrences of weeds such as annual bluegrass and crabgrass according to mowing frequency were greater in every 2-day mowing treatment, while plots mowed every 6 days had less weed occurrence. Occurrence of rusts significantly increased in high fertility plots and frequently mowed turfgrasses.

  • The study was initiated to evaluate the effects of overseeding warm-season grass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) with cool-season grasses (CSG) on turfgrass density, uniformity and tiller appearance and to determine turfgrass species and seeding rate applicable for a practical use. Treatments were comprised of Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.), perennial ryegrass (PR, Lolium perenne L.), tall fescue (TF, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and their mixtures. Overall turfgrass density and uniformity were much better with the overseeded treatments over the control. In early stage after overseeding, the greater the PR in treatments, the greater the turfgrass density and uniformity. But the higher the KB, the lower the density and uniformity. From the middle-stage evaluation, however, we observed the opposite results as compared with early-stage findings. Accordingly, the KB was highest in turfgrass density and uniformity, while the PR lowest. In regards of mixtures, both turfgrass density and uniformity were better with increased KB and decreased PR in overseeding rates. As for a medium-quality mixtures of Korean lawngrass with CSG, it would be the best choice to apply with KB at $50g\;m^{-2}$ and equal combination of KB, PR and TF by 1/3 in mixing at $75g\;m^{-2}$ in terms of sustainable density and uniformity.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the effect of competitive duration and density of Cyperus serotinus Rottb. on rice growth and yield. In plant height of both rice and flatsedge, the compacter density of flatsedge, the higher was plant height. Rice in the 50 days competition with flatsedge had shorter culm than in other competition plots at all density. The panicle number was affected during the tillering stage. The spikelet number per panicle was influenced from 25 days to 50 days after transplanting. Grain maturity ratio and 1,000 grain-weight didn't decrease under competition before 50 days after transplanting. The competition during the tillering stage to the young panicle initiation stage decreased significantly rice yield. The rice competed with low density of flat sedge showed small decrement of yield and its components. The period reaching to maximum stem number of flatsedge become shorter as flatsedge density increased. Number of flatsedge tubers competed with rice produced was 40.1, 16.8 and 11.4 times as much in 1: 1, 1:3 and 1:5 density ratio of rice to flatsedge, respectively. Flatsedge dry matter weight and rough rice yield had the relationship of Y = 601. 95-$0.67x^{**}$.

  • Organic grape was generally produced in rainshield or plastic greenhouse culture while most of fruits were produced in open field. But little attention has been given to soil properties with different culture facilities in organic grape cultivation. This study was conducted to investigate soil physico-chemical properties of organic grapes farms with different culture facilities and soil management practices. Organic fertilizer was main resource to manage soil at organic grapes farms. Organic grapes farms were applied with total amount of organic fertilizer at one time, either at basal or additional fertilization, whereas conventional grapes farms applied with split fertilization. Bulk density and penetration resistance of soil were lower at both rainshield and green manure-applied plastic greenhouse cultures than those at clean plastic greenhouse culture. Especially, in plastic greenhouse, sod culture with natural weed after green manure application was more effective than general sod culture in improving physical properties of the rhizosphere. The contents of organic matter, available phosphate and exchangeable potassium tended to increase in the soils applied with green manure, and the difference of soil chemical properties were significant between rainshield and plastic greenhouse cultures. The optimum soil management was required in plastic greenhouse because pH, available phosphate and exchangeable cations reached over optimum range. Consequently, the ground cover management is the key factor to affect the chemical properties as well as soil physical properties extensively in plastic greenhouse. It is found that sod culture with natural weed after green manure application resulted in enhancement of utilization efficiency of nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potassium in soil in comparison with general sod culture.

  • Amur silver grass, Miscanthus sacchariflorus is one of the promising biofuel weeds. A damage of noctuid pest, Leucapamea askoldis was firstly observed from Amur silver grass in Hwasun silver grass plantation during the survey of insect pests of Amur silver grass in Iksan, Hwasun, and Sancheong plantation areas in Korea. The host of L. askoldis was not known yet in Korea. The L. askoldis damage was observed as larval feeding on newly grown shoots and roots of M. sacchariflorus close to soil surface from early May in 2013. Investigated larval density was $1.6{\pm}1.1per\;m^2$ on April 4 and damage rate of shoots was $0.8{\pm}0.4%$ on May 4, 2013. The larvae bore into shoots of M. sacchariflorus and feed on the inside of plant. The damaged shoots are easily pulled out and distinguished by the boring hole on the shoots. L. askoldis was potential insect pest in M. sacchariflorus plantation areas.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of silicate mixed with nitrogen fertilizer on improving the growth and reducing nitrogen input of zoysiagrass. Plant height, fresh and dry weight of shoots, roots, and stolons, the number of shoots and total of stolons length were increased with highest in silicate mixed with nitrogen 24 kg/10a than nitrogen 24 kg/10a, and it showed no significance in silicate mixed with nitrogen 18 kg/10a. Nitrogen use efficiency in mixed silicate fertilizer was increased by 25-30% than single nitrogen fertilization. Moreover, the contents of available $SiO_2$, and organic matters of silicate fertilization on soil was higher than not silicate fertilization on soil. The silicate enhanced the growth and density of zoysiagrass, while it was a crucial factor to affect the chemical property of the soil.

  • This study was carried out to develope new zoysiagrass cultivar Semil' (Registration no. 1749). Artificial crossing between the collected lines of typical Z. matrella, NM1 (collected in South Korea) and the different ecotype of Z. matrella, ASm (collected in South Korea) was made to develop a F1 hybrid plant (NM1 ${\times}$ ASm). Among the 30 progenies, (NM1 ${\times}$ ASm)-1 (Semil) showed superior performance in density rating. 'Semil' showed genetically light green color, with narrow leaf width ($2.7{\pm}0.12mm$), and low plant height ($10.3{\pm}3.7cm$), Length to lowest leaf blade of this cultivar was $1.8{\pm}0.15cm$, which may allow low mowing height upto 12 mm.
