  • The characteristics of corrosion resistance for the surface of ductile cast iron(GCD40) by plasma nitriding process have been studied in terms of electrochemical polarization behaviors including corrosion potential($E_{corr}$), anodic polarization trends, polarization resistance($R_p$), and also have been studied microstructures, hardness and specific wear of nitrided layer Nitrided layer showed an enhanced hardness values in all the plasma nitriding condition investigated. In the result of wear test, specific wear of nitrided specimens were much decreased than that of non-treated specimens. In the results of XRD, ${\gamma}'phase\;and\;{\varepsilon}$ phase were detected in nitrided surface. And it was found that ${\varepsilon}$ phase was decreased and ${\gamma}'phase$ was increased respectively, as the nitriding time became longer. In the test of corrosion resistance, natural potentials in all the nitrided specimens were towards noble directions than in the case of non-treated specimens. The measurement of electrode potentials revealed that corrosion resistivity of plasma nitrided specimens were higher than in the case of the non-treated specimens.

  • In this study, sliding wear tests were conducted to investigate the effects of tempered hardness on the sliding wear behavior of bearing steel. At a sliding speed of 0.3 m/s, the wear resistance of bearing steel with a tempered hardness of HRC 54 was superior to that with HRC 62. It was found that bearing steel with HRC 54 showed a strong tendency for the occurrence of oxidation wear at that speed, compared to that with HRC 62. This would be due to the troostitic structure of bearing steel with HRC 54, which is highly susceptible to corrosion. In this context, it is considered that sliding wear behavior could be affected by the corrosion resistance of the material.

  • In this study, in order to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance of aluminum, surface treatment was made by anodizing with oxalic acid solution and sealing with nano-diamond powder. Average size of nano-diamond powder was 30nm. Anodizing with oxalic acid made many pores in the aluminum oxide layer. Pore size and oxide thickness were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Pore size increased as temperature increased and voltage increased. It was possible to make oxide layer with pore diameter more than 50 nm. Oxide thickness increased as temperature and voltage and treatment time increased. Oxide layer with above $10{\mu}m$ thickness was made. Aluminum oxide layer with many pores was sealed by water with nano-diamond powder. Surface morphology was investigated by SEM. After sealing treatment with nano-diamond powder, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and hardness increased.

  • This paper was studied on the wear-corrosion behavior of ductile cast iron in the acidic environment. In the dry atmosphere and variety of pH solution, wear-corrosion characteristics and friction coefficient of GCD 60 with various sliding speed and distance were investigated. And electrochemical polarization test of GCD 60 was examined in the environment of various pH value. The main results are as following : In the dry atmosphere, boundary friction appears below nearly 5 $kg_{f}$ of contact load, and it is considered that solid friction occurs over nearly 5 $kg_{f}$ of contact load. As pH value becomes low, wear-corrosion loss in the aqueous solution increases. As the corrosion environment is acidified, corrosion potential of GCD 60 becomes noble, polarization resistance becomes low, and corrosion current density increases.

  • In order to develop the corrosion and wear resistance of stainless steels, effects of plasma-nitriding on the surface characteristics of stainless steels containing Nb were investigated by utilizing a potentiostat. It was found that plasma nitriding at $350^{\circ}C$, compared with $500^{\circ}C$, produced a good corrosion resistance as nitriding time increased, whereas stainless steel containing low Nb content showed that pitting potential and corrosion potential decreased.

  • Aluminum alloys have been widely used in engine materials, cold & hot-water storage vessels and piping etc., Furthermore, the aluminum alloy of AC8A have been widely used in mold casting material of engine piston for various vehicles because of its properties of temperature, wear and corrosion resistance. Therefore, it is considered that evaluation of corrosion resistance as well as wear resistance of AC8A material is also important to improve its property and to prolong its lifetime. In previous paper, the effect of solution($510^{\circ}C$:4hrs) and tempering($190^{\circ}C$: 16, 24, and 36 hrs)heat treatments to corrosion resistance and hardness were investigated using electrochemical method. In this study, in order to examine completely the effect of the tempering hours to hardness variation and corrosion resistance, the results of solution($510^{\circ}C$:4hrs) and tempering($190^{\circ}C$: 2, 4, 8 and 12hrs)heat treatments to hardness and corrosion resistance were investigated using electrochemical method. The hardness decreased with solution heat treatment compared to mold casting condition, but its value increased with tempering heat treatment. Furthermore, the corrosion resistance increased with decreasing of the hardness, and decreased with increasing of the hardness reversely. And the tempering heat treatment temperature at $190^{\circ}C$ for 8 hrs exhibited the highest value of the hardness and also indicated the highest corrosion current density. However, the values of hardness and corrosion current density was again increasingly decreased with increasing of tempering hours than 8 hrs, Consequently, it is suggested that decision of the optimum. tempering hours is very important to improve the corrosion or wear resistance.

  • To improve properties of wear resistance and anti-corrosion of the trivalent chromium platings, oxinitrocarbunsing and steam oxidation were conducted. Armophous trivalent Cr platings could be transformed to chromium carbides of high hardness, that showed low friction and wear rate. Even though micro-cracks were within as platings, superior anti-corrosion property was obtained by these treatments due to healing of cracks at the interface between the trivalent chromium platings and substrate.

  • Several plasma spray and metallurgical surface coatings such as $Al_2O_3$, $Cr_2O_3$, WC-Ni, and chromizing coating have been examined for their application in environments with high temperature, wear, and corrosion. The chromizing coating is different from others coatings in the manufacturing process the surface. These coatings' characteristics were tested experimentally, and the results were compared. WC-Ni shows good performance against thermal barrier, wear, and corrosion and is one of the best candidates for the environment considered herein. These coatings were studied for their application in the steel manufacturing industry. The most commonly required functions in this industry are thermal and wear resistance.

  • In this study, STS 316L powders with 3 wt.% Cu and 1 wt.% Sn known as corrosion-resistance reinforcement elements, are prepared to make different kinds of specimens, in which, 3 wt.% Cu and 1 wt.% Sn are added in different forms by mixing, alloying and fully alloying. After sintering in the same condition, the corrosion resistance, wear resistance and their mechanical properties of specimens are tested respectively. According to the comparison, STS 316L specimen sintered at $1270^{\circ}C$ showed the most excellent mechanical property: HRB 78 (hardness), 1130.7 MPa (RCS), 26.6% (Fraction Wear), It was similar with the specimen made of STS316L and fully alloyed Cu and Sn powders, meanwhile, the latter one appears the best corrosion resistance, 75hrs-salt immersion test results. In addition, the specimens with Cu and Sn powders additive showed relatively worse wear resistance in compared with STS316L specimen.
