  • The present study was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant potential of hot water extract and its fractions from dichloromethane ($CH_2Cl_2$), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol (n-BuOH), and water ($H_2O$) of castor-aralia (Kalopanax pictus) leaves using different antioxidant tests. Among these crude extract and fractions, EtOAc fraction exhibited higher antioxidant potency than others in 1,1-diphenyl-2-pricylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging, reducing power assay, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity. However, $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction showed higher hydroxyl radical scavenging and DNA damage protective activity. This work demonstrates the potential of castor-aralia leaves as antioxidant functional food ingredients.

  • Previous studies demonstrated that laser ablation under transparent liquid can result in ablation enhacement and particle removal from the surface. In this work, the liquid-assisted excimer laser ablation process is examined fer polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Si, and alumina with emphasis on ablation enhacement, surface topography, and debris formation. In the case of PET and PMMA, the effect of liquid is analyzed both fer thin water film and bulk water. As the ablation enhanement by liquid is already known for Si and alumina, the analysis focuses on surface topography and debris formation resulting from the liquid-assisted laser ablation process. The results show that application of liquid increases the ablation rate of PMMA while that of PET remains unchanged even in the liquid-assisted process. It is also revealed that the liquid can significantly improve the surface quality by reducing the debris deposition. However, the surface roughness is generally deteriorated in the liquid-assisted process. The surface toporaphy is found to be strongly dependent on the method of liquid application, i.e., thin film or bulk liquid.

  • From the early 1980's, the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) has been developed as a one of the standard tunneling method in Korea. Owing to the results of many researches, the practical problems of shotcrete has been improved for a last decade. However, the excess amount of rebound still remains one of the critical problems in shotcrete technology. In order to improve for this rebound problem, recently developed cement mineral accelerator has been successfully applied to several NATM tunnels in Korea. An experimental investigation was carried out in order to verify the rebound characteristics of wet-mix Steel Fiber Reinforced Shotcrete (SFRS) with powder types cement mineral accelerator. Mortar setting test, SEM analysis, bonding test under spring water condition and rebound test were conducted. From the result, wet-mix SFRS with cement mineral acelerator exhibited excellent bonding characteristics even spring water condition and less rebound ratio compared to the conventional liquid accelerator.

  • A superhydrophobic surface means that the contact angle between the solid surface and a water droplet is more than $150^{\circ}$. Materials with a superhydrophobic surface have a self-cleaning function because of the Lotus effect, in which water is not absorbed by the material but rolls off of it. If such a Lotus effect can be applied to the surface of underwater vessels, submarines, torpedos, and so on, enhanced vessels can be made based on this lubricant effect reducing the friction coefficient for the liquid. Because polymer composites can be easily applied in various nanotechniques, they are more advantageous than conventional materials like iron in terms of a superhydrophobic surface. Furthermore, a superhydrophobic surface bring enhanced anticorrosion and ecotechnology because no paint is needed on underwater vessels.

  • Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) method, which uses sand material, is frequently used in Korea. However, the use of sand for SCP faces environmental and economical problems with the shortage of its resources. Therefore, it is necessary to substitute other materials for compaction piles. One of the alternatives is using gravel in lieu of sand. Granular Pile, constituted with sand and crushed-stone, is one of the methods to improve soft clay and loose sandy ground. In this study, modeled pile load tests are performed in test cell. The observations are made on the consolidation and the variation of water table of three different grounds, original, sand pile installed, and granular pile installed ground. In addition, engineering characteristics such as bearing capacity, settlement and drainage are investigated. The test results show that Gravel Compaction Pile (GCP) is more efficient for increasing bearing capacity and reducing settlement than SCP and had similar pore water pressure dissipation to sand. Therefore, the results show that GCP can be a good substitution for SCP.

  • Surface modification of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PEI) films by treatment with ethoxylated alkylaminoanthraquinoes which was synthesized by the reaction of 1-aminoanthraquinone with poly(ethylene glycol) via a series of methylene spacer were investigated. The synthesized ethoxylated alkylaminoanthraquinones showed definite cloud point as in nonionic surfactants, and the adsorption of the compounds on PET increased near the cloud point. At same temperature the adsorption increased with the length of methylene spacer; hexyl-octyl-, and decyl-. The adsorption was limited to the extreme surface of PET film, which made the surface of PET film hydrophillic by reducing water contact angle.

  • This paper presents the test results of biological aerated filtration(BAF) process to replace activated sludge process by enhancing treated effluent quality and reducing the costs. In BAF process both BOD and SS compounds in wastewater are degraded and removed by biological reaction and filtration. Upflow BAF with expanded polypropylene media and downflow BAF with ceramic media were used to investigate the effects of hydraulic and organic loads on effluent quality. As a result, in BAF processes which has different media, upflow BAF reactor shows 5% higher efficiency than downflow BAF and this phenomena caused by backwashing methods and operational conditions. The results of influence factors analyzed by Factor Analysis Method in BOD and SS treatment efficiency are the size of media, hight of media bed and type of media. The quantitative effects of media size are 5.73% in TBOD, 5.78% in SBOD and 7.65% in TSS, so we confirmed the main factor is media size.

  • The blending effects of surfactants on the polystyrene emulsion polymerization were studied. The blending of Triton X-100 and SDS affects to the interfacial properties of the styrene monomer and water phases, and finally, the properties of the polystyrene latex particles. As the blending ratio of SDS/Triton X-100 increases, the interfacial tension and CMC of the blended surfactants were decreased and results in a reducing the size of the latex particles. It was found that the interfacial tension was reduced when the surfactant were blended. By increasing the SDS content, the interfacial tension was reduced, and, at a certain condition, the interfacial tension was reached to an extremely low value to form micro-emulsion and the nano-sized latex particles (80~110 nm).

  • Diffuse pollution has been considering as a major source of the quality deterioration of water resources. The establishment of riparian vegetation strips or buffers along those areas of water bodies is used to reduce the threat of diffuse pollution. Remote sensing offers a means by which critical areas could be identified, so that subsequent action toward the establishment of riparian zones can be taken. On the behalf of KOMPSAT-2 satellite imagery as a high resolution spatial data, Landsat TM satellite data are used to aquire the land cover for the riparian buffers studied. This investigation aims to assess the riparian buffers established on the upper Geum river as a pollution mitigation. Through comparing the delineation of riparian buffer zones developed with the existing zones established by the government, we can find the critical distortion points of the existing riparian buffer zone.
