In this study. it was suggested that the elastic model to analyze the behavior of pore water pressure in saturated sand specimen on the condition of non-drainage. The model based on the experiments which were performed for the relationships between the pore water pressure and the grain size of specimen, and effective stress, respectively. The suggested model embodied the pore water and soil grain as separate elastic springs of different stiffness. The springs were joined parallel and the axial strains were restricted to the same deformation. The suggested model was well consistent with the experiments.
The watertightness of concrete is judged by the depth of penetration of water forced in under pressure with the mechanism of flow of seepage water examined theoretically and experimentally. As a result, it is found that in the case of low water pressure approximately 0.15Mpa or less, the flow is Darcy seepage flow, the same as flow in an ordinary sand stratum, whereas in the case of high water pressure, the flow is diffused seepage flow accompanied by internal deformation of concrete. It is suggested that the watertightness of concrete be evaluated by seepage coefficient in the case of the former and diffusion coefficient in the case of the latter.
Micro hydraulic turbines take a growing interest because of its small and simple structure as well as high possibility of applying to micro and small hydropower resources. The differential pressure exiting within the city water pipelines can be used efficiently to generate electricity like the energy generated through gravitational potential energy in dams. In order to reduce water pressure at the inlet of water cleaning centers, pressure reducing valves are used widely. Therefore, pressure energy is wasted. Instead of using the pressure reduction valve, a micro counter-rotating hydraulic turbine can be replaced to get energy caused by the large differential pressure found in the city water pipelines. In this paper, detail studies have been carried out to acquire basic design data of micro counter-rotating hydraulic turbine, output power, head, and efficiency characteristics on various number of runner vane. Moreover, the influences of pressure, tangential and axial velocity distributions on turbine performance are also investigated.
To consider effects of essential parameters of water impact pressure on dynamic structural responses of bow bottom structures, a parametric study for a ship bottom panel is carried out. The idealized pressure time history models were assumed by triangular and rectangular shapes in time domain. The main loading parameters are duration time and peak pressure value maintaining the same impulse value. The structural models for local bottom stiffened panels of a container ship are analysed. The natural frequency analysis and transient dynamic response analysis are performed using MSC/NASTRAN. Added mass effects of contacting water are considered and the pressure distributions are assumed to be uniform in the whole water contacting surface. The effects of loading parameters on the structural responses, especially maximum displacements, are considered. Besides the peak pressure value, effects of duration time correlated with natural frequencies are thought to be the important parameters.
In this study, we propose a flow velocity evaluation scheme based on pressure measurement in pressurized pipeline systems. Conservation of mass and momentum equations can be decomposed into mean and perturbation of pressure head and flowrate, which provide the pressure head and flowrate relationship between upstream and donwstream point in pressurized pipeline system. The inverse impedance formulations were derived to address measured pressure at downstream to evaluation of flow velocity or pressure at any point of system. The convolution of response function to pressure head in downstream valve provides the flow velocity response in any point of the simple pipeline system. Simulation comparison between traditional method of characteristics and the proposed method provide good agreements between two distinct approaches.
This study was conducted to figure out the diagnosis basis of cooling performance depending on water amount in the refrigerant of air conditioner, which can be estimated by the temperatures and pressures along the refrigerant circulation line. A car air conditioner of SONATA III (Hyundai motor Co., Korea) was tested at maximum cooling condition at the engine speed of 1500 rpm in the room controlled at 33~$35^{\circ}C$ air temperature and 55~57% relative humidity conditionally. Measured variables were temperature differences between inlet and outlet pipe surfaces of the compressor, condenser, receive drier and evaporator; and high pressure and low pressure in the refrigerant circulation line; and temperature difference between inlet and outlet air of the cooling vent of evaporator. In this study, changes of the water amount in the refrigerant were correlated to the temperatures and pressure changes and also water amount caused poor cooling performance. As water amount increased in the refrigerant in the air conditioner, the performance of the cooling or the heat transfer became worse. Temporal variations of the surface temperature of the evaporator outlet pipe and the low-side pressure showed various patterns that could estimate the water amount. When the water amount caused bad cooling performance, the patterns of the temperature of the evaporator outlet pipe indicated irregular fluctuation greater than $5^{\circ}C$. When the diagnosis system is using just external sensors of the low-side pressure and the temperatures of inlet and outlet air of cooling vent of the evaporator, the precise pattern of bad cooling performance caused by excess water amount in the cooling line was irregular pressure fluctuation, 25 kPa under 120 kPa, and temperature, $12^{\circ}C$ and less.
Plant water status during growth is directly and indirectly associated with seed yield. The objective of the present study was to determine the genotypic differences in leaf water characteristics at an early growth stage of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] plants through the pressure-bomb technique. Measurements of water potential as well as relative water content (RWC) were made at the third leaf from the fully-expanded top leaf of eight different soybean genotypes grown for 31 to 35 days after field emergence. On the basis of the modified exponential model, pressure-volume (PV) curves were fitted well ($R^2$=0.92** to 0.99** for the curvi-linear region and R=0.67** to 0.96** for the linear region), indicating that a segmented model using PROC NLIN of SAS could be used effectively to estimate the leaf water characteristics. The regression analysis for the pressure-volume (PV) curve revealed genotypic variation in the solute potential at saturation (Ψ$_{s,sat}$ :-10.7 to -14.8 bar), solute potential at incipient plasmolysis (Ψ$_{s,ip}$ : -14.3 to -18.3 bar), RWC at incipient plasmolysis (RW $C_{ip}$ : 83.3 to 91.7%), high integrated turgor pressure from saturation to plasmolysis ( $_1$$^{b}$ : 0.39 to 0.81), and maximum volumetric modulus of elasticity ($\varepsilon$$_{max}$ : 150 to 445 bar).).
Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) process is one of membrane processes for harvesting renewable energy by using salinity difference between feed and draw solutions. Power is generated by permeation flux multiplied by hydraulic pressure in draw side. Membrane fouling phenomena in PRO process is presumed to be less sever, but it is inevitable. Membrane fouling in PRO process decreases water permeation through membrane, resulting in significant power production decline. This study intended to investigate the effect of hydraulic pressure in PRO process on alginate induced organic fouling as high and low hydraulic pressures (6.5 bar and 12 bar) were applied for 24 h under the same initial water flux. In addition, organic fouling in draw side from the presence of foulant (sodium alginate) in draw solution was examined. As major results, hydraulic pressure was found to be not a significant factor affecting in PRO organic fouling as long as the same initial water flux is maintained, inidicating that operating PRO process with high hydraulic pressure for efficient energy harvesting will not cause severe organic fouling. In addition, flux decline was negligible from the presence of organic foulant in draw side.
This study analyzed how the installation of a pressure gauge in the indoor fire hydrant of an apartment building affected identifying pressurized water in the pipe, making it easier to conduct internal inspection on the fire suppression system, and ensuring reliability of fire suppression. The following are the study's results: First, identifying pressurized water in the indoor firefighting pipe had a positive effect on the installation of a pressure gauge in the indoor fire hydrant. This implies that a higher level of identification of pressurized water in the indoor firefighting pipe had a positive impact on improving the installation and use of a pressure gauge in the indoor fire hydrant. Second, making it easier for the fire safety officer to inspect the fire suppression system had a positive effect on the installation of a pressure gauge in the indoor fire hydrant. This suggests that if it becomes easier for the apartment building's stakeholder to conduct internal inspection or the firefighting facility manager to carry out inspection on the fire suppression system, it would have a positive effect on the installation of a pressure gauge in the indoor fire hydrant. Finally, ensuring reliability in fire suppression had a positive effect on the installation of a pressure gauge in the indoor fire hydrant. This implies that if it becomes easier to identify pressurized water in the indoor firefighting pipe, for the fire safety officer to conduct internal inspection, or for the firefighting facility manager to carry out inspection in accordance with the fire suppression system's internal inspection requirements, it would increase reliability in fire suppression, making it more necessary to install a pressure gauge in the indoor fire hydrant.
