Stereoscopic PIV measurements were made in the wind tunnel with the actual size waterjet model. The main wind tunnel provides the vehicle velocity while the secondary wind tunnel adjusts the jet issuing velocity. Experiments were performed at the range of jet to vehicle velocity ratio (JVR), 3.75 to 8.0 and the Reynolds number of 220,000 based on the jet velocity and the hydraulic diameter of the waterjet intake duct. Wall pressure distributions were measured for various JVRs. Three dimensional velocity fields were obtained at the inlet and outlet of the intake duct. It is found that severe acceleration is occurred at the lip region while deceleration is noticeable at the ramp side. The detailed three dimensional velocity fields can be used as the accurate velocity input for the CFD simulation. It is interesting to note that there are many different types of vortices in the instantaneous velocity field. It can be considered that those vortices are generated by the corner of rectangular section of the intake and Gortler vortices due to the curved wall. However, typical secondary flow with a pair of counter rotating vortex pair is clearly seen in the ensemble averaged velocity field.

Various vortical structures are investigated by using three kinds of flow visualization methods in branch pipe flows. There are two typical flow patterns when a jet from the branch pipe with various angles is injected to the main pipe cross flow. The velocity range of cross flow of the main pipe is 0.2 m/s ~ 1.2 m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number, R$_{p}$ is of the range 1.5 * 10$^{3}$ ~ 9.02 * 10$^{3}$. The velocity ratio(R), jet velocity/cross flow velocity, is chosen from 1.3 to 4. The subsequent behavior and development of the ring vortices which are created at the jet boundary mainly depend on the velocity ratio. An empirical relation for the shedding frequency of the ring vortices is derived. It is also found that there are two different vortex shedding mechanism in the mixing of two fluid streams.s.

Oil-film surface flow visualizations and three-dimensional flow measurements using a straight five-hole probe have been conducted for a circular impinging jet which is normally oriented to the crossflow in a channel. Throughout the experiments, the ratio of channel height to injection hole diameter, H/D, is fixed to be 1.0, and blowing ratio is varied to be 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0. From the surface flow visualizations for both top wall(target plate) and bottom wall, impinging jet region on the target plate can be clearly identified, and for the small value of H/D = 1.0, presence of the bottom wall changes the near-hole flow structure, significantly. The three-dimensional flow measurements show that in the dawnstream region of the injection hole, there exist a pair of counter-rotating vortices, called "scarf vortices", and the strength of the vortices strongly depends on the blowing ratio. In addition, a new flow model in the flow symmetry plane has been proposed for H/D = 1.0.

In this study, a program has been coded to evaluate propeller thrust rapidly following the effects of propeller shapes and the environmental facts. At this time, Semi-infinite Helical Vortices model is used to predict the induction factor which is introduced by Kawada. This program is based on Wrench's Propeller lifting line theory, and it can predict aerodynamic coefficients such as thrust, power, and efficiency. First of all, this program is compared with test results of NACA reports to verify of the reliability. Secondly, subsonic wind tunnel test has been performed following variations of propeller's rpm and inflow velocities.
Mean and extreme pressure distributions on a large cantilevered flat roof model are measured in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The largest peak suction values are observed from pressure taps beneath conical "delta-wing type" corner vortices that occur for oblique winds, then the characteristics and causes of the local peak suctions are discussed in detail. Power spectra of fluctuating wind pressures measured from some typical taps located at the roof edges under different wind directions are presented, and coherence functions of fluctuating pressures are also obtained. Based on these results, it is verified that the peak suctions are highly correlated with the conical vortices. Furthermore, according to the characteristics of wind loads on the roof, an aerodynamic solution to minimize the peak suctions by venting the leading edges and the corners of the roof is recommended. The experimental results show that the suggested strategy can effectively control the generation of the conical vortices and make a reduction of 50% in mean pressures and 25% in extreme local pressures at wind sensitive locations on the roof.

The heat/mass transfer characteristics on the plane tip surface of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. At the Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}10^5$, heat/mass transfer coefficients are measured for the tip gap height-to-chord ratio, h/c, of 2.0% at turbulence levels of Tu = 0.3 and 14.7%. A tip-surface flow visualization is also performed for h/c = 2.0% at Tu = 0.3%. The results show that there exists a strong flow separation/re-attachment process, which results in severe local thermal load along the pressure-side corner, and a pair of vortices named "tip gap vortices" in this study is identified along the pressure and suction-side tip corners near the leading edge. The loci and subsequent development of the pressure- and suction-side tip gap vortices are discussed in detail. The combustor-level high inlet turbulence, which increases the tip-surface heat/mass transfer, provides more uniform thermal-load distribution.
The experimental study on flow characteristic in various laminar coflow diffusion flame has been conducted with a particular focus on the buoyancy force exerted from gaseous hydrocarbon fuels. Methane ($CH_4$), Ethylene ($C_2H_4$) and n-Butane ($C_4H_{10}$) were used as fuels. Coflow burner and Schlieren technique were used to observe the fuel flow field near nozzle exit and flow characteristics in flames. The result showed that the vortices in n-Butane with density heavier than air were appeared near the nozzle exit with the strong negative buoyancy on the fuel stream. As Reynolds number increases by the control of velocity, the vortices were greater and the vortices tips were moved up from the nozzle exit. In addition, it can be found that the heated nozzle can affect to the flow fields of fuel stream near the nozzle exit.

In this study, in-cylinder flow of the swirl chamber type diesel engine numerically simulated by VECTIS code. The flow fields during the intake and compression process were also investigated in detail. Numerical results revealed that the generation and distortion of the swirling, tumbling vortices and those influences on turbulence kinetic energy by shape of the jet passage, angle and area. It was also found that flow characteristics were affected by inflow velocity that depends on change of the jet passage shape. Swirl ratio was increased according to decrease of jet passage area, and was affected by piston motion according to increase of jet passage angle. Tumbling vortices had the similar in various cases, but tumble ratio was increased with the inflow velocity. The generation of turbulence kinetic energy was considerably influenced by complex effects of swirling and tumbling vortices.

The free surface influenced the wake behind a rotating propeller and its effects were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel with the variation of water depth. Instantaneous velocity fields were measured using two-frame PIV technique and ensemble-averaged to study the phase-averaged flow structure in the wake region. For an isolated propeller, the flow behind the propeller is affected only by the propeller rotation speed, the leading on the blades and the proximity of the propeller to the free surface. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the potential wake and the viscous wake developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between the tip vortices and the slipstream causes the oscillating trajectory of tip vortices. The presence of the free surface greatly affected the wake structure, especially for propeller immersion depth of 0.6D. At small immersion depths, the free surface modified the tip and trailing vortices and the slipstream flow structure downstream of X/D = 0.3 in the propeller wake.

The vortex shedding from a circular cylinder placed in a steady uniform stream is simulated by the vortex cloud model of the discrete vortex method. The vorticity created at the cylinder surface is discretely represented by a number of nascent vortices at each time step and the motion of these cumulative vortices is monitored to produce the evolution of the vortex distribution pattern. Convection of vortices was traced by the vortex-in-cell technique and the force coefficients were calculated by both Sarpkaya's formulae and Lee's formulae for comparison. Discussions concerning the interrelation between the computational parameters and some principles for choosing the suitable values are included.
