  • The steady-state, incompressible and three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed to investigate the flow fields around the seabed tiller used for soil improvement in coastal fisheries and the pulling force and buoyancy generated by tiller operation. The turbulence model used in this study is a realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$. As a results, at a stationary current or a current speed of 1.2 knots, where rotor rotates in a clockwise direction, a typical vortex pair appears near the tip of the rotor except for the edge, and the strength of the vortex pair increases with the number of revolutions of the rotor. The pulling force of the tiller rotating in the counterclockwise direction increases with the number of revolutions. Also, when the current flows at 1.2 knots and the rotor rotates clockwise, the pulling force of the tiller acts on the upstream side irrespective of the number of rotations of the rotor, so that no force is applied. The buoyancy of the tiller acts on the seawater surface if the flow direction inside the rotor is the same as the direction of rotation of the rotor, regardless of the current velocity, otherwise it acts on the seabed.

  • It is experimentally well-known that high anisotropies of the turbulent flow field are dominant inside the tip leakage vortex, which is attributable to a substantial proportion of the total loss and constitutes one of the dominant mechanisms of the noise generation. This anisotropic nature of turbulence invalidates the use of the conventional isotropic eddy viscosity turbulence models based on the Boussinesq assumption. In this study, to check whether an anisotropic turbulence model is superior to the isotropic ones or not, the results obtained from the steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations based on the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model and the Reynolds stress model (RSM) are compared with experimental data for two test cases: a linear compressor cascade and a forward-swept axial-flow fan. Through this comparative study of turbulence models, it is clearly shown that the RSM, which can express the production term and body-force term induced by system rotation without introducing any modeling, should be used to predict quantitatively the complex tip leakage flow, especially in the rotating environment.

  • The two-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow behind rectangular bluff bodies between two parallel plates was analyzed numerically. The steady state flow and the vortex flow behind rectangular bluff bodies in the channel were investigated for two regimes i.e., the laminar(Re = 100, 300, 500) and the turbulent flows(Re = 10⁴∼10/sup 6/). The vortex shedding was generated by a physical disturbance(6%) numerically imposed at the rear of the bluff bodies for a short time. It was observed that the perturbed flow became periodic after a transient period. And in the case of unsteady inflow, the sinusoidal pulsatile flow was applied as the inlet condition in the turbulent flow of Reynolds number of 1.0×10/sup 5/. FLUENT code was employed to solve the problems. The power-law scheme was used to get stable linearized equations and the PISO algorithm was applied to finding the solution of them.

  • Researches on the Reynolds number effect on bridge decks have made slow progress due to the complicated nature of the subject. Heretofore, few studies on this topic have been made. In this paper, aerostatic coefficients, Strouhal number ($S_t$), pressure distribution and Reynolds number ($R_e$) of Great Belt East Bridge and Sutong Bridge were investigated based on deterministic vortex method (DVM). In this method, Particle Strength Exchange (PSE) was chosen to implement the simulation of the flow around bluff body and to analyze the micro-mechanism of the aerostatic loading and Reynolds number effect. Compared with the results obtained from wind tunnel tests, reliability of numerical simulation can be proved. Numerical results also showed that the Reynolds number effect on aerostatic coefficients and Strouhal number of the two bridges can not be neglected. In the range of the Reynolds number from $10^5$ to $10^6$, it has great effect on the Strouhal number of Sutong Bridge, while the St is difficult to obtain from wind tunnel tests in this range.

  • The present study numerically investigates two-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer ir the confined jet flow in the presence of applied magnetic field. For the purpose of controlling vortex shedding and heat transfer, numerical simulations to calculate the fluid flow and heat transfer in the confined jet are performed for different Reynolds numbers in the absence and presence of magnetic fields and for different Prandtl numbers of 0.02 (liquid metal), 0.7 (air) and 7 (water) in the range of $0{\le}N{\le}0.05$, where N is the Stuart number (interaction parameter) which is the ratio of electromagnetic force to inertia force. The present study reports the detailed information of flow and thermal quantities in the channel at different Stuart numbers. As the intensity of applied magnetic fields increases, the vortex shedding formed in the channel becomes weaker and the oscillating amplitude of impinging jet decreases. The flow and thermal fields become the steady state if the Stuart number is greater than the critical value. Thus the Nusselt number at the stagnation point representing the heat transfer characteristics also vary as a function of Stuart number.

  • The characteristics of starting flow of a six-blade Rushton turbine mixer were investigated by using a cinematic Particle Image Velocimetry technique. The flows were quantified by measurements of velocity fields with a 4 ms time interval for a blade rotational speed of 100 r.p.m, so that the turbine Reynolds number(ND$^2$/ ν) was fixed to 6,960. The radial shedding of the trailing vortices starts from passing four blades after the beginning of rotation. It clearly shows that the vortex pairing phenomena caused by the interactions between trailing cortices firm consequtive blades. The average convection velocity of the radial flow is found to be 28 % of the tip velocity. The starting flow seems to arrive at a steady state after 8 revolutions in this study, which corresponds nearly one circulation through the bulk flow trajectory with the average radial convection velocity.

  • This paper presents some examples of active control of flow-induced vibration using piezoelectric actuators. The flutter phenomenon, which is the dynamic instability of structure due to mutual interaction among inertia, stiffness, and aerodynamic forces, may cause catastrophic structural failure, and therefore the active flutter suppression is one of the main objectives of the aeroelastic control. Active flutter control has been numerically and experimentally studied for swept-back lifting surfaces using piezoelectric actuation. A finite element method, a panel aerodynamic method, and the minimum state space realization are involved in the development of the governing equation, which is efficiently used for the analysis of the system and design of control laws with modern control framework. The active control suppressed flow-induced vibrations and extended the flutter speed around by 10%. Another representative flow-induced vibration phenomenon is the oscillation of blunt bodies due to the vortex shedding. In general, it is quite difficult to set up the numerical model because of the strong non-linearity of the vortex shedding structure. Therefore, we applied adaptive positive position feedback controller, which requires no pre-determined model of the plant, and successfully suppressed the flow-induced vibration.

  • In a closed square cavity filled with a liquid, a cooling horizontal upper wall and a heating lower wall, the flow isn't generated under the ground-based condition when Rayleigh number is lower than 1700. In this mechanism, Ra=1534, Temperature and velocity fields near an air-bubble in silicon-oil under a cooled upper wall were investigated. Temperature and velocity fields is visualized using the thermo-sensitive liquid-crystal and light sheet visualization technique. The quantitative analysis fer the temperature and the flow fields were carried out by applying the image processing technique to the original data. The symmetry shape of two vortexes near an air bubble was observed. As the bubble size increased, the size of vortex and the magnitude of velocity increased. In spite of elapsed time, a pair of vortexes was the unique and steady-state flow in a square cavity and wasn't induced to the other flow in the surround region.

  • $MgB_2$ doped with $TiO_2$ was prepared by the in-situ solid state reaction to study the effects of $TiO_2$ dopant on the flux pinning behavior of $MgB_2$ superconductor. From the field-cooled and the zero-field-cooled temperature dependences of magnetization, the realms of vortex-glass and vortex-liquid states of $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ were determined in the H-T diagram (the temperature dependence of upper critical magnetic field and irreversibility line). The critical current density was estimated from the width of hysteresis loops in the framework of Beam's model at different temperatures. The results indicate that nano-scale $TiO_2$ inclusions play a role of the effective pinning centers and lead to the enhanced upper critical field and critical current density. It is suggested that the grain-boundary pinning mechanism is realized in $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ superconductor.
