  • A two-dimensional shallow-water flow around a cavity driven by a sinusoidally oscillating external flow was studied numerically. A container model of "T" shape was constructed in the numerical computation for comparison with the experimental observation. The numerical computation shows that the aspect ratio of the cavity is not much affecting the overall flow pattern, and for the aspect ratio 2, the deep region of the cavity has a stagnant flow motion. At larger Reynolds number, the flow field is characterized by many small vortices which are not present in the flow visualization. The flow pattern in the external region is in good agreement with the experimentally recorded particle trajectories. It turns out that two large coherent vortices situated in the exterior region of the cavity are responsible for clockwise and counterclockwise drift motions, in large scale, of particles.particles.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation method for the flow around advancing ships in regular waves by using a rectilinear grid system. Because the grid lines do not consist with body surface in the rectilinear grid system, the body geometries are defined by the interaction points of those grid lines and the body surface. For the satisfaction of body boundary conditions, no-slip and divergence free conditions are imposed on the body surface and body boundary cells, respectively. Meanwhile, free surface is defined with the modified marker density method. The pressure on the free surface is determined to make the pressure gradient terms of the governing equations continuous, and the velocity around the free surface is calculated with the pressure on the free surface. To validate the present numerical method, a vortex induced vibration (VIV) phenomenon and flows around an advancing Wigley III ship model in various regular waves are simulated, and the results are compared with existing and corresponding research data. Also, to check the applicability to practical ship model, flows around KRISO Container Ship (KCS) model advancing in calm water are numerically simulated. On the simulations, the trim and the sinkage are set free to compare the running attitude with some other experimental data. Moreover, flows around the KCS model in regular waves are also simulated.

  • A cable element happens to vibration easily rather than other elements because a cable element has few rotational stiffness. Dynamic motion of stay cable is distinguished from vibration by wind and/or rain and excitation by support movement. Mostly a stay cable is vibrated by wind and/or rain except that when natural periods coincide between stiffening girder and stay cable. It happens to deterioration of serviceability and durability by vortex shedding, rainy-wind induced vibration, and galloping. Additional damping generated by installation of cable damper is well known good scheme against above phenomena. Researchers have lack of effort to develop the recommendations even if cable stayed bridges are designed and constructed in Korea. Therefore, development of the domestic recommendations should be achieved as soon as possible. This study suggests the consistent and systematic recommendations on vibration controlling design of stay cable by installation of damper. It gives readers two important methodologies that one evaluates required damping ratio, the other determines installing point considering efficiency.
