Estimation of growth curve in Hanwoo steers using progeny test records

  • A total of 6,973 steer growth records of Hanwoo breeding bull's progeny test data collected from 1989 to 2015 were analyzed to identify the most appropriate growth curve among three growth curve models (Gompertz, Logistic and von Bertalanffy). The Gompertz growth curve model equation was $W_t=990.5e^{{-2.7479e}^{-0.00241t}}$, the Logistic growth curve model equation was $W_t=772(1+8.3314e^{-0.00475t})^{-1}$, and the von Bertalanffy growth curve model equation was $W_t=1,196.4(1-0.646e^{-0.00162t})^3$. The Gompertz model parameters A, b, and k were estimated to be $990.5{\pm}10.27$, $2.7479{\pm}0.0068$, and $0.00241{\pm}0.000028$, respectively. The inflection point age was estimated to be 421 days and the weight of inflection point was 365.3 kg. The Logistic model parameters A, b, and k were estimated to be $772.0{\pm}4.12$, $8.3314{\pm}0.0453$, and $0.00475{\pm}0.000033$, respectively. The inflection point age was estimated to be 445 days and the weight of inflection point was 385.0 kg. The von Bertalanffy model parameters A, b, and k were estimated to be $1196.4{\pm}18.39$, $0.646{\pm}0.0010$, and $0.00162{\pm}0.000027$, respectively. The inflection point age was estimated to be 405 days and the weight of inflection point was 352.0 kg. Mature body weight of the von Bertalanffy model was 1196.4 kg, the Gompertz model was 990.5 kg, and the Logistic model was 772.0 kg. The difference between actual and estimated weights was similar in the Logistic model and the von Bertalanffy model. The difference between market weight and estimated market weight was the lowest in the Gompertz model. The growth curve using the von Bertalanffy model showed the lowest mean square error.

Estimation of Growth Curves and Suitable Slaughter Weight of the Liangshan Pig

  • The Liangshan pig is a traditional Chinese small-sized breed; it has a relatively long feeding period and low meat production ability but superior meat quality. This study utilized three non-linear growth models (Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and logistic) to fit the growth curve of Liangshan pigs from an unselected, random-bred pig population and estimate the pigs most suitable slaughter weight. The growth development data at 20 time points of 275 Liangshan pigs (from birth to 250 d) were collected. To analyze the relative gene expression related to development, seven slaughter weight phases (50, 58, 66, 74, 82, 90, and 98 kg) (20 pigs per phase) were examined. We found that the Liangshan pig growth curve fit the typical S-curve well and that their growth turning point was 193.4 days at a weight of 62.5 kg, according to the best fit Von Bertalanffy model based on the goodness of fit criteria. Furthermore, we estimated that the most suitable slaughter weight was 62.5 to 74.9 kg based on the growth curve and the relative expression levels of growth-related genes.

  • 물가자미의 표본은 동중국해 및 동해에서 중형 외끌이기선저인망에 의해 2004년 2월부터 2005년 1월까지 어획된 것이다. 총 389개체 표본의 오른쪽 이석을 연령형질로 사용하여 연령과 성장을 추정하였다. 윤문은 12~3월(주형성시기 2월), 연 1회 형성되는 것으로 나타났다. 산란시기는 2~4월(주산란시기 3월)이었다. 전장과 전중과의 상대성장식은 $TW=0.5091{\times}10^{-2}TL^{3,222}$ ($r^2=0.92$)로 나타났고, 암 수간의 상대성장식 유의한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다(P>0.05), 추정된 von Bertalanffy 성장식은 $L_t=46.58(1-e^{-0.14(1+1.32)})$로 추정되었다. 암 수간의 연령별 성장에는 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다(P>0.05).

  • Samples of Corbicula japonica Prime of Jujin estuary in Gochang were collected from July 2000 to September 2001. Age of C. japonica was determined from the rings on the shell. The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variation of the marginal index (MI') of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of February and March. The relationship between shell length (SL; mm) and total weight (TW; g) was expressed by the following equation: TW = 1.0942 ${\times}10^{-4}SL^{3.3217}$ ($r^2$ = 0.9905). Shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) was highly correlated with shell height as the following equation: SH = 0.9174 SL - 0.9935 ($r^2$ = 0.9885). The shell length (SL) - shell width (SW) relation was also expressed by the following equation; SW = 0.5925 SL - 1.1706 ($r^2$ = 0.9726). Growth curves for shell length and total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy's growth curve were expressed as: $$SL_t = 46.4861[1-e^{-0.3383(t+0.0958)}]$$, $$TW_t = 34.54[1-e^{-0.3383(t+0.0958)}]^3.3217$$.

한국 서해산 쇄방사늑조개, Potamocorbula ustulata ustulata (Reeve, 1844) 의 연령과 성장 (Age and Growth of the Asian Clam Potamocorbula ustulata ustulata (Reeve, 1844) on the West Coast of Korea)

  • 2004년 10월부터 2005년 11월까지 전라북도 고창군 주진천에 서식하는 쇄방사늑조개의 서식지 환경과 성장을 조사하였다. 서식지의 월별 수온은 $4.6-29.3^{\circ}C$로 나타났으며, 1월에 가 장 낮았고, 8월에 가장 높았다. 지온은 $2.6-29.4^{\circ}C$로 나타났으며 수온과 비슷하게 1월과 2월에 낮았고 8월에 가장 높았다. 월별 염분은 2.3-20.2 psu로 평균 $8.21\;{\pm}\;4.77\;psu$였다. 쇄방사늑조개의 패각에 나타나는 윤문은 년 1회 형성되며, 주된 윤문 형성 시기는 10-12월임을 확연할 수 있었다. 초륜의 형성 기간은 약 5개월 (0.42년) 으로 나타났으며, 각장 (SL) 과 각고 (SH) 간의 관계는 SH = 0.4352 SL + 0.5642 ($R^2\;=\;0.978$) 이고, 각장과 각폭 (SW) 간의 관계는 SW = 0.4352 SL - 0.5675 ($R^2\;=\;0.957$) 이며, 각장과 전중량 (TW) 간의 관계는 $TW\;=\;6.999\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;SL^{3.2542}\;(R^2\;=\;0.975)$ 로 나타났다. 연령 (t) 에 대한 각장 (SL) 의 Bertalanffy 성장식은 $SL_t\;=\;30.77\;[1-e^{-0.4572(t+0.7371)}]$였으며, 전중량 (TW) 의 Bertalanffy 성장식은 $TW_t\;=\;4.87\;[1-e^{-0.4572(t+0.7371)}]^{3.2542}$로 추정되었다.

  • 2004년 4월부터 2005년 3월까지 전라북도 김제시 심포면 갯벌에 서식하는 백합의 연령과 성장을 조사하였다. 백합의 패각에 나타나는 윤문은 년 1회 형성되며, 주된 윤문 형성시기는 2월$\sim$4월임을 확인할 수 있었다. 초륜의 형성기간은 약 6개월(0.5년)로 나타났으며, 각장(SL)과 각고(SH)간의 관계는 SH=0.8103 SL + 0.5145$(R^2=0.991)$이고, 각장과 각폭(SW)간의 관계는 SW=0.4897 SL + 0.0315 $(R^2=0.976)$이며, 각장과 전중량(TW)간의 관계는 $TW=2.9195\times10^{-4}\;SL^{2.9547}\;(R^2=0.991)$로 나타났다. 연령 (t)에 대한 각장(SL)의 Bertalanffy 성장식은 $SL_t=104.9(l-e^{-0.2235(t+0.7677)})$였으며, 전중량(TW)의 Bertalanffy 성장식은 $TW_t=280.8(l-e^{-0.2235(t+0.7677)})^{2.9547}$로 추정되었다.

  • 우리나라 서해안의 참조기를 대상으로 1967년 6월부터 1968년 5월 사이의 자료에서 체장, 체중 및 인문(鱗紋)조사를 실시하며 다음의 결과를 얻었다. 1. 윤문은 연 1회 형성되고, 형성 시기는 $4\~7$월로, Bae(1960)가 발표한 산란기와 일치되고 있다. 2. 윤군(輪群)별 각 윤경(輪徑)적 평균 성장률은 0.73이었다. 3. 체장(total length)과 인경(鱗徑)과의 관계는 직선 회귀로, 그 관계식은 다음과 같다. L=61.350R+50.184 4. 체중과 체장(total length)과의 관계는 지수 곡선으로 다음과 같다. $$W=4.298L^{3.227}\times10^{-3}$$ 5. Walford의 정차도에 의하여 산출된 이론적인 최대 체강은 346.9mm이었고, 그 관계식은 다음과 같다. $$L_{n+1}=0.6866L_n+10.8730$$ 6. 연령과 체장(total length)과의 관계를 von Bertalanffy의 성장 방정식에 적응시킨 결과 다음과 같았다. $$L_t=346.9(1-e^{-0.376(t+0.609)})$$

한국 남해안 조간대에 서식하는 우럭, Mya japonica의 자원생태학적 특성 (Population Ecological Characteristics of the Soft-shelled Clam, Mya japonica in the Intertidal Zone of South Sea in Korea)

  • This paper is to study population ecological characteristics, including growth parameters, survival rate, instantaneous coefficients of natural and fishing mortalities, and age at first capture of the soft-shelled clam, Mya japonioa in the intertidal zone of South Sea in Korea. For describing growth of the clam a von Bertalanffy growth model was adopted, The von Bertalanffy growth curve had an additive error structure and the growth parameters estimated from a non-linear regression were SH/sub ∞/=79.83mm, K=0.26, and t/sub 0/= -0.01. Survival rate (S) of the soft-shelled clam was 0.26 (SD=0.02). The instantaneous coefficients of natural mortality (M) was estimated to be 0.78/year and fishing mortality (F) 0.57/year for the soft-shelled clam. The age at first capture (t/sub c/) was estimated as 2.69 year. The mean densities of the soft-shelled clam by bottom type were 3.40 inds./m²(SE=0.18) in the sand, 63.4 inds./m²(SE= 0.53) in the muddy sand, and 0 inds./m2 (SE=0) in the gravelly sand. The mean densities of the soft-shelled clam by 3 different areas were 4.88 inds./m²(SE=0.09), 2.61 inds./m²(SE=0.13), 7.20 inds./m²(SE=0.18), respectively and the biomass of the clam were estimated as 131mt, 121mt, 665mt, respectively. An yield-per-recruit analysis showed that the current yield-per-recruit of about 8.30g with F=0.57/year and the age at first capture (t/sub c/) 2.69 year, was lower than the maximum possible yield-per-recruit of 9.60g. Fixing to at the current level and increased fishing intensity (F) could produce an increase in the predicted yield-per-recruit from 8.30g to about 9.40. However, estimated yield-per-recruit increased to 1.30g by decreasing to from the current age (2.69 year) to age two with F fixed at the current level. Yield-per-recruit was estimated under harvest strategies based on F/sub max/ and F/sub 0.1/.

한국 남해안 개서대 Cynoglossus robustus의 연령과 성장 (Age and Growth of the Robust Tonguefish, Cynoglossus robustus in the Southern Sea of Korea)

  • 본 연구는 남해안 여수인근 해역의 주요 어종의 하나인 개서대의 비늘을 이용하여 개서대의 연령과 성장을 추정하였다. 분석에 사용된 개서대는 2004년 2월부터 2005년 12월까지 여수 인근해역에서 기선저인망어업에 의해 어획된 어획물 중 무작위로 표본 채집하였으며, 총 402미를 조사하였고 그 중 353미를 정밀측정 및 비늘을 적출하여 연령사정에 사용하였다. 체장의 범위는 암컷이 전장 20.2~39.3 cm였으며, 수컷의 전장은 20.8~35.0 cm로 나타났다. 개서대의 체중(BW)과 체장(TL)의 관계는 $BW=0.0013TL^{3.399}$ ($R^2=0.916$)이었고, 암 수별로 체장에 대한 체중의 차이가 있었다(P<0.05). 개서대의 연령에 대한 체장자료의 오 차구조를 확인한 결과 합의 오차구조를 가지고 있었으며, 개서대의 성장식은 von Bertalanffy 성장모델을 사용하여 추정하였다. 추정된 개서대의 성장식 $L_t=43.77(1-e^{-0.186(t+2.295)})$ ($R^2=0.976$)이었다. 암 수간의 연령에 대한 체장의 상대성장에는 차이가 없었다(P>0.05).

Age Studies on the Butter Fish Population from Southwestern Waters of Korea

  • The present paper concerns the age determination and growth of butter fish, Pampus argenteus from the southwestern waters of Korea by otolith reading. 743 specimens taken by stow-net in the southern part of the Yellow Sea and northeastern part of the East China Sea during the period from October 1972 to September 1973 were examined. Results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. Sex ratio of females to males was found to be 2:1. 2. Ring marks on the otolith were found to be formed twice a year, once during the period of January-May and the other time in September. 3. The Lee's phenomenon was observed on the otolith sample. 4. The relationship between the radius of otolith(R) and fork length(L) was found to be as follows: R=0.3069+0.0133L 5. Calculated fork length at the time of otolith ring formation are found to be as follows:I-ring,71.67mm; II-ring, 125.05mm; III-ring, 168.65mm; IV-ring, 201.74mm; V-ring, 225.80mm; VI-ring, 240.84mm. 6. Maximum fork length calculated according to the diagram of Walford's growth transformation was found to be 281.5mm. 7. Growth curve, when related to the von Bertalanffy's equation, was laid out as $L_{t}=281.5[1-e$^{-0.674(t-0.128)}]$
