  • A ductility inverse-mapping method for SDOF systems including passive dampers is proposed which enables one to find the maximum acceleration of ground motion for the prescribed maximum response deformation. In the conventional capacity spectrum method, the maximum response deformation is computed through iterative procedures for the prescribed maximum acceleration of ground motion. This is because the equivalent linear model for response evaluation is described in terms of unknown maximum deformation. While successive calculations are needed, no numerically unstable iterative procedure is required in the proposed method. This ductility inverse-mapping method is applied to an SDOF model of bilinear hysteresis. The SDOF models without and with passive dampers (viscous, viscoelastic and hysteretic dampers) are taken into account to investigate the effectiveness of passive dampers for seismic retrofitting of building structures. Since the maximum response deformation is the principal parameter and specified sequentially, the proposed ductility inverse-mapping method is suitable for the implementation of the performance-based design.

  • A numerical analysis of a compressor dehumidifier has been conducted focusing on the air side heat transfer, which is a part of a series research on the dehumidifier. The moving reference frame was applied to the fan modeling, and the porous model was used for the evaporator and condenser modeling. Curve fitting obtained the inertial and viscous resistances parameters to the results of the physical model of the unit cell with actual shape of a fin tube. The porous model was validated within a reasonable computation time for the range of practical inlet velocity of a dehumidifier. A parametric study has been conducted for fin number, fan speed (i.e., air flow rate), and evaporator/condenser tube arrangement. ANOVA analysis showed the dependency of each parameter on the velocity and temperature uniformity, which are desirable for high performance of the dehumidifier.

  • The Gellan-type polysaccharide produced by Pseudomonas elodea(ATCC 31461) is one of the new heteropolysaccharides, having useful properties as gelling, suspending, stabilizing, emulsifying and binding agents in aqueous systems. Medium compositions for growth stage and production stage are improved. The problems of low cell concentration and poor productivity in highly viscous fermentation were attributed to inadequate mixing accompanied by insufficient oxygen transfer. During continuous culture, cell growth and polysaccharide production were greatly affected by the apparent viscosity, and they showed oscillation behavior, i.e. as the product concentration increases, cell concentration decreases. With improved culture conditions, the productivity of continuous culture increased up to 0.6g/$\ell$/hr(6-fold that of batch culture ) at dilution rate, D=$0.14hr^{-1}$.

  • High-speed and low-speed flows are simulated numerically by flowfield-dependent mixed explicit-implicit (FDMEI) method. This algorithm depends on implicitness parameters of convection, diffusion, diffusion gradients, and source terms which are calculated from the changes of local Mach, Reynolds, Peclet, and Damkohler numbers between adjacent nodes. Convection phenomena or shock waves are resolved from Mach number-dependent implicitness parameters whereas diffusion or viscous actions are simulated by Reynolds number or Peclet number-dependent implicitness parameters. Fluctuation components of all variables are properly accommodated spatially and temporally in the FDMEI procedure. To illustrate, some benchmark example problems are presented for comparisons of the FDMEI results with other available data. These results appear to be encouraging and point toward the need for further investigations of the FDMEI theory.

  • The friction is one of the nonlinearities to be considered in the precise position control of a system which has electromechanical components. The friction has complicated nonlinear characteristics and depends on the velocity, the position and the time. The conventional fixed friction compensator and the controller based on linear control theory may cause the steady state position error or oscillation. The plant to be controlled in this study is a positioning system with a linear brushless DC motor(LBLDCM). The system behaves like a 4th-order model including the compliance and the friction. In this study, the plant model is simplified to a 2nd-order model to reduce the computation in on- line estimation. Also, to reduce the computation time, only the friction is estimated on-line while the mass and the viscous damping coefficient are fixed to the values obtained from off-line estimation. The validity of the proposed scheme is illustrated with the computer simulation and the experiment where the friction is compensated by using the estimation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of design parameters on the friction loss in piston skirt. An analytical model to describe the friction characteristics of piston skirt has been presented, which is based on the secondary motion of piston and mixed lubrication theory, It could be shown that the skirt friction closely depends on the side force acted on the piston pin. The side force is inf1uenced by cylinder pressure at low engine speed, but by inertia force at high engine speed. The usage of extensive skirt area and low weight piston is effective to reduce the friction loss at high speed. The low viscosity oil considerably decreases viscous friction as engine speed increases, but it increases boundary friction at low engine speed. From the parametric study, it is found that the skirt axial profile is the most important design parameter related to the reduction of skirt friction.

  • This study develops and numerically verifies an innovative seismically resilient bracing system. The proposed self-centering tension-only brace (SC-TOB) is composed of a tensioning system to provide a self-centering response, a frictional device for energy dissipation, and a high-strength steel cable as a bracing element. It is considered to be an improvement over the traditional self-centering braces in terms of lightness, high bearing capacity, load relief, and double-elongation capacity. In this paper, the mechanics of the system are first described. Governing equations deduced from the developed analytical model to predict the behavior of the system are then provided. The results from a finite element validation confirm that the SC-TOB performs as analytically predicted. Key parameters including the activation displacement and load, the self-centering parameter, and equivalent viscous damping are investigated, and their influences on the system behavior are discussed. Finally, a design procedure considering controlled softening behavior is developed and illustrated through a design example.

  • The present investigation deals, heat and mass transfer characteristics with the effect of slip on the hydromagnetic pulsatile flow through a parallel plate channel filled with saturated porous medium. Based on the pulsatile flow nature, exact solution of the governing equations for the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration are obtained by using two term perturbation technique subject to physically appropriate boundary conditions. The expressions of skin friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are also derived. The numerical values of the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration are displayed graphically whereas those of shear stress, rate of heat transfer and rate of mass transfer at the plate are presented in tabular form for various values of pertinent flow parameters. By increasing the slip parameter at the cold wall the velocity increases whereas the effect is totally reversed in the case of shear stress at the cold wall.

  • A numerical investigation has been made for flows in an axisymmetric circular cylinder with an impulsively rotating cone located at the bottom of the container. The axisymmetric container is completely filled with a viscous fluid. Major parameter for the present research is only the vertex angle of the cone, otherwise Reynolds number and aspect ratio of the vessel are fixed. Main interest concerns on the vortex breakdown of meridional circulation by impulsive rotation of the cone with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder. Numerical method has been used to integrate momentum and continuity equations on a generalized body-fitted grid system. The pattern of vortex breakdown is quite different from that in a right circular cylinder with flat endwall disks. The flow visualization photograph of the preceeding work by Escudier is compared with the present numerical results and the two results are in good agreements. Also flow data are plotted to gain a deep understanding for the present phenomena of the vortex breakdown. The conclusions of this work are clearly explained by the classical theory of the vortex flows in a finite geometry.

  • The dynamic model of ac servo motor is influenced very much due to rotor resistance change and nonlinear characteristic. By using the sliding mode control the dynamic behavior of system can be made insensitive to plant parameter change and external disturbance. This paper describes the application of the sliding mode control for position control of ac servo motor. The control scheme is derived and designed. A design method based on external load parameters has been developed for the robust control of ac induction servo drive. The proposed control scheme are given based on the variable structure controller and slip frequency vector control. Simulated results are given to verify the proposed design method by adoption of sliding mode and show robust control for a change of shaft initial J, viscous friction B and torque disturbance.
