Discovery of Chitin Deacetylase Inhibitors through Structure-Based Virtual Screening and Biological Assays

  • Chitin deacetylase (CDA) inhibitors were developed as novel antifungal agents because CDA participates in critical fungal physiological and metabolic processes and increases virulence in soil-borne fungal pathogens. However, few CDA inhibitors have been reported. In this study, 150 candidate CDA inhibitors were selected from the commercial Chemdiv compound library through structure-based virtual screening. The top-ranked 25 compounds were further evaluated for biological activity. The compound J075-4187 had an IC50 of 4.24 ± 0.16 µM for AnCDA. Molecular docking calculations predicted that compound J075-4187 binds to the amino acid residues, including active sites (H101, D48). Furthermore, compound J075-4187 inhibited food spoilage fungi and plant pathogenic fungi, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) at 260 ㎍/ml and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) at 520 ㎍/ml. Therefore, compound J075-4187 is a good candidate for use in developing antifungal agents for fungi control.

Metaverse and the Evolution of Food and Retail Industry

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine the opportunities in the food industry in the context of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the metaverse. The metaverse expands offline experiences into a virtual space and provides users with the advantage of overcoming the limitations of physical space. Research design, data and methodology: With the development of various contents based on advanced technology, the metaverse is becoming popular among the MZ generation (comprising millennials and Gen Zs), who are skilled at navigating digital platforms. Moreover, the previously entertainment game focused service has expanded to the business field after COVID-19; activities on the metaverse are now making space for economic value creation. I examined the recent global trends in the context of NFTs and the metaverse as well as the existing cases in Korea. Results: Globally, gaming and performance platforms such as Roblox, Fortnite etc. are still concentrated in the entertainment industry. However, as shown by ZEPETO and ifland in Korea there are many opportunities in the retail and food industries. Conclusions: We analyzed the ecosystems of the retail and food and beverage sectors, where the metaverse will be useful in the future, and have suggested the implications of the opportunities provided by the metaverse.

Virtual Simulation of Temperature Distribution throughout Beef Packages with Time-temperature Indicator (TTI) Labels

  • If the time-temperature indicator (TTI) experienced a different temperature than the accompanied packaged food, influenced by heat transfer between the TTI, package, and ambient air, TTI would incorrectly predict the food quality changes with temperature. Temperature distributions of a finite slab with different sizes, representing beef packaged with TTI, were estimated by the finite element method (FEM). The thermal properties of the beef and TTI, such as heat capacity, density, and heat conductivity, were estimated from the relevant equations using their chemical compositions. The FEM simulations were performed for three cases: different locations of TTIs on the beef, different thicknesses of beef, and non-isothermal conditions of ambient air. The TTIs were mounted in four different locations on the beef. There was little difference in temperature between four locations of the TTI on the package surface. As the thickness of the slab increased, the temperature of the TTI changed faster, followed by the corner surface, as well as middle and bottom parts, indicating the possible error for temperature agreement between the TTI and the slab. Consequently, it was found that any place on the package could be selected for TTI attachment, but the package size should carefully be determined within a tolerable error of temperature.

한국인 식사구성안의 식품군 및 권장식단의 물발자국에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Water Footprint of Korean Food Guide and Recommended Meal Plan)

  • Sustainable and healthy diet is a challenge in recent world. Despite the global depletion of water resources, Korea has no system for controlling its water footprint. This study established the water footprint tables of Korean food using the Water Footprint Network databases, and applied them into two meal plans for 19~64 year-old adults recommended in the Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans 2020. Nut, oil, and meat's water footprints were higher and those of fruit and vegetable were lower. Sesame oil had the highest water footprint of 21,793 L/kg and pineapple had the lowest domestic water footprint of 102 L/kg. Water footprint of one serving size of beef was 925 L, that of chicken was 260 L, and those of soybean were 43 L in global and 81 L in domestic. The water footprint of the recommended 2,400 kcal meal plan was 2,882 L, and that of 1,900 kcal meal plan was 1,915 L. The water resources can be saved by choosing food with lower water footprint. The results of this study can be used in the further researches for more sustainable and healthier Korean diet.

서울지역 성인의 식품.영양.건강 태도와 식품영양표시 활용실태 (Food/Nutrition Attitudes, Views and Practices of Adults in Seoul Area)

  • Food/nutrition related views, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors were investigated for three hundred randomly selected men and women, aged 20-60 years, residing in Seoul metropolitan area. Food/nutrition views, attitudes, and beliefs were found to vary greatly between groups of different age, sex, education and income level. Adults of 20-35 years of age showed significantly less strong views about keeping traditional food habits, while exhibiting a significantly high level of acceptance towards the use of convenience foods as compared to the adults aged 36 years or older. Food safety was found to be a major concern to most of the subjects accounting 69.7% for pesticides residues in fresh produce items, 94.7% for food additives in processed food, and 56.3% for food poisoning in foods eaten outside of the home. Male adults aged 45 years or older showed a strong tendency to rely on a few promotional food products for the maintenance of their health and for them the development and implementation of a sensible feed nutritin/health education program including a way to avoid nutrition quackery might be beneficial. Eighty percent of the subjects were found to read food labels with higher rates shown among young adults and females. Due to the virtual absence of nutrition labeling however, the percentage of subjects who idicated that they are looking for the information on nutrient content was low (<10%) compared to the rates for other informations such as date of manufacture(80.2%), expiration data(55.8%), ingredients(40.9), and additives(40.9%). Ninety one percent of the subjects indicated that they would like to see the sources for nutrition label the nutritional value of the foods. The top five most frequently (68.3%), food packages(50.7%), and radio(43.3%). Health professionals such as physicians, nurses, and nutritionists/dietitians were utilized less frequently as sources of nutrition information than lay sources, with reported rate of only 38%, 22%, and 0.7%, respectively. These results collectively suggest that strategies are to be developed to provide accurate nutrition information to adults.

국내 가상수 및 물발자국 산정 연구의 인용관계 동향 분석 (Citation Relationship Trend Analysis of Virtual Water and Water Footprint Studies in Korea)

  • 우리나라는 가상수의 수입 의존도가 높은 국가에 속하여 국가 차원에서 물위기와 식량위기가 우려되고 있다. 이에 따라 최근에 국내에서는 자연환경 및 사회경제 요인을 고려한 가상수 및 물발자국 산정 연구가 꾸준히 진행되고 있다. 그러나 아직까지는 국내의 연구실적이 부족하여 산정방법 및 비교분석은 국외의 선행연구 결과에 크게 의존하고 있다. 2014년 이후에는 국내 농·축산물의 산정결과가 본격적으로 발표되어 국내의 가상수 및 물발자국의 결과를 국내 선행연구와 상호 비교하는 연구가 많아지고 있다. 본 연구는 국내 물발자국 산정 연구의 인용관계를 파악하기 위하여 국내 농·축산물 물발자국 산정연구의 연구동향을 파악하였다. 이를 위하여 국내 연구자들이 최근 10년 동안 국내·외에서 발표한 물발자국 산정 관련 문헌을 중심으로 국외 및 국내 연구자들의 연구결과를 분석하였다. 그 결과 국내 물발자국 산정 연구의 문헌 간 인용관계를 파악하여 인용관계도를 작성하였다. 본 연구의 부록에 수록한 가상수 및 물발자국 관련 국내 연구자의 연구실적 모음은 향후 국내에서 가상수 및 물발자국 산정에 관련되는 연구를 수행하려는 연구자에게 국내·의 연구동향에 대한 다양한 정보를 제공할 것이다. 또한 국가 차원에서 효과적인 수자원관리를 위한 국가전략의 수립에 방향성을 제시할 것으로 기대된다.

Control Strategy for Accurate Reactive Power Sharing in Islanded Microgrids

  • This paper presents a control strategy to enhance the accuracy of reactive power sharing between paralleled three-phase inverters in an islanded microgrid. In this study, the mismatch of power sharing when the line impedances have significant differences between inverters connected to a microgrid has been solved, the accuracy of the reactive power sharing in an islanded microgrid is increased, the voltage droop slope is tuned to compensate for the mismatch of voltage drops across the line impedances by using an enhanced droop controller. The proposed method ensures accurate power sharing even if the microgrid has local loads at the output of the inverters. The control model has been simulated by MATLAB/Simulink with two or three inverters connected in parallel. Simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the implemented control method. Furthermore, in order to validate the theoretical analysis and simulation results, an experimental setup was built in the laboratory. Results obtained from the experimental setup verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

한국의 농산물 가상수 산정 (Estimation of Crop Virtual Water in Korea)

  • 가상수는 농산물, 가공식품 또는 제품을 만들기 위해서 필요한 물의 총량을 의미한다. 우리나라의 곡물자급율은 27 %에 불과하며, 농산물 수입에 의한 가상수 수입이 다른 나라들에 비해 매우 큰 편에 속하며, 우리나라에 적합한가상수를 산정할 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 Chapagain과 Hoekstra가 제안한 방법을 이용하여, 1991년부터 2007년까지의 연간 농업 가상수 사용량(agricultural virtual water use, AWU)과 작물 1 톤을 생산하기 위하여 필요한 가상수량(virtual water content, VWC)을 산정하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 가상수 사용량을 산정하기 위하여 44가지 작물에 대해 17년간의 작물 생산량과 재배면적 데이터를 수집하고, FAO Penman-Monteith식을 이용하여 작물소비수량을 산정하였다. 산정 결과를 살펴보면, 농업 가상수 사용량은 151억 $m^3$으로 산정되었고, 점차 그 양이 줄어드는 경향을 보였다. 작물 중 논벼가 가장 많은 양의 농업 가상수를 사용하였고, 전체 농업 가상수 사용량 중 75 %에 해당하는 연간 101억 $m^3$을 사용하였으며, 논벼를 1톤을 생산하기 위해 필요한 가상수량은 1600.1 $m^3$/ton으로 산정되었다. 작물을 생산하는 데 있어 필요한 가상수량이 큰 작물 종류는 채유종실이 가장 큰 값을 나타내었고, 엽채류 및 근채류가 가장 작은 것으로 나타났다. 산정된 원료 작물의 가상수량은 원료 작물과 가공 생산물의 중량비를 이용하여 농산물 가공품이나 축산물 등 2차 생산물의 가상수를 산정할 수 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서 산정된 결과는 우리나라의 농업 분야의 물발자국을 산정하는 데 있어서 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

규칙 구성자와 연결 구성자를 이용한 혼합형 행동 진화 모델 (Hybrid Behavior Evolution Model Using Rule and Link Descriptors)

  • 가상 로봇의 행동 진화를 위해서 규칙 구성자와 연결 구성자를 구성하여 분류 규칙과 진화 신경망을 형성하는 혼합형 행동 진화 모델(Hybrid Behavior Evolution Model)을 제안한다. 본 모델에서는 행동 지식을 두 수준에서 표현하였다. 상위 수준에서는 규칙 구성자와 연결 구성자를 구성하여 표현력을 향상시켰다. 하위 수준에서는 행동 지식을 비트 스트링 형태의 염색체로 표현하여, 이들 염색체를 대상으로 유전자 연산을 적용하여 학습을 수행시켰다. 적합도가 최적인 염색체를 추출하여 가상 로봇을 구성하였다. 구성된 가상 로봇은 주변 상황을 인식하여 입력 정보와 규칙 정보를 이용하여 패턴을 분류하였고, 그 결과를 신경망에서 처리하여 행동하였다. 제안된 모델을 평가하기 위해서 HBES(Hybrid Behavior Evolution System)를 개발하여 가상 로봇의 먹이 수집 문제에 적용하였다. 제안한 시스템을 실험한 결과, 동일한 조건의 진화 신경망보다 학습 시간이 적게 소요되었다. 그리고, 규칙이 적합도 향상에 주는 영향을 평가하기 위해서, 학습이 완료된 염색체들에 대해서 규칙을 적용한 것과, 그렇지 않은 것을 각각 수행하여 적합도를 측정하였다. 그 결과, 규칙을 적용하지 않으면 적합도가 저하되는 것을 확인하였다. 제안된 모델은 가상 로봇의 행동 진화에 있어서 기존의 진화 신경망 방식 보다 학습 성능이 우수하고 규칙적인 행동을 수행하는 것을 확인하였다.

비전 카메라 기반의 무논환경 자율주행 로봇을 위한 중심영역 추출 정보를 이용한 주행기준선 추출 알고리즘 (Guidance Line Extraction Algorithm using Central Region Data of Crop for Vision Camera based Autonomous Robot in Paddy Field)

  • In this paper, we propose a new algorithm of the guidance line extraction for autonomous agricultural robot based on vision camera in paddy field. It is the important process for guidance line extraction which finds the central point or area of rice row. We are trying to use the central region data of crop that the direction of rice leaves have convergence to central area of rice row in order to improve accuracy of the guidance line. The guidance line is extracted from the intersection points of extended virtual lines using the modified robust regression. The extended virtual lines are represented as the extended line from each segmented straight line created on the edges of the rice plants in the image using the Hough transform. We also have verified an accuracy of the proposed algorithm by experiments in the real wet paddy.
