A recent theoretical approach based on the coupling of both the Flory-Huggins (FH) and the Association Equilibria thermodynamic (AET) theories was modified and adapted to study the miscibility properties of a multi-component system formed by two polymers (a proton-donor and a proton-acceptor) and a proton-acceptor solvent, named copolymer(A)/solvent(B)/polymer(C). Compatibility between polymers was mainly attained by hydrogen-bonding between the hydroxyl group on the phenol unit of the poly(styrene-co-vinyl phenol) (PSVPh) and the carbonyl group of the biodegradable and environmentally friendly poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). However, the self-association of PSVPh and specific interactions between the PSVPh and the H-acceptor group (an ether oxygen atom) of the epichlorohydrin (ECH) solvent were also established in a lower extension, which competed with the polymer-polymer association. All the binary specific interactions and their dependence with the system composition as well as with the copolymer content were evaluated and quantified by means of two excess functions of the Gibbs tree energy, ${\Delta}g_{AB}$ and ${\Delta}g_{AC}$. Experimental results from fluorescence spectroscopy were consistent with the theoretical simulations derived with the model, which could also be applied and extended to predict the miscibility in solution of any polymer blend with specific interactions.
Copper(II) ion-selective PVC membrane electrode based on 2-mercaptobenzoxazole as a new ionophore and o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE) as plasticizer is proposed. This electrode revealed good selectivity for $Cu^{2+}$ over a wide variety of other metal ions. Effects of experimental parameters such as membrane composition, nature and amount of plasticizer, and concentration of internal solution on the potential response of $Cu^{2+}$ sensor were investigated. The electrode exhibits good response for $Cu^{2+}$ in a wide linear range of 5.0 ${\times}$ 10−.6-1.6 ${\times}$$10^{-2}$ mol/L with a slope of 29.2 ${\pm}$ 2.0 mV/decade. The response time of the sensor is less than 10 s, and the detection limit is 2.0 ${\times}$$10^{-6}$ mol/L. The electrode response was stable in pH range of 4-6. The lifetime of the electrode was about 2 months. The electrode revealed comparatively good selectivities with respect to many alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metal ions.

The approximate rates and stoichiometry of the reaction of excess lithium gallium hydride with selected organic compounds containing representative functional groups were examined under the standard conditions (diethyl ether, 0 $^{\circ}C)$ in order to compare its reducing characteristics with lithium aluminum hydride and lithium borohydride previously reported, and enlarge the scope of its applicability as a reducing agent. Alcohols, phenol, and amines evolve hydrogen rapidly and quantitatively. However lithium gallium hydride reacts with only one active hydrogen of primary amine. Aldehydes and ketones of diverse structure are rapidly reduced to the corresponding alcohols. Conjugated aldehyde and ketone such as cinnamaldehyde and methyl vinyl ketone are rapidly reduced to the corresponding saturated alcohols. p-Benzoquinone is mainly reduces to hydroquinone. Caproic acid and benzoic acid liberate hydrogen rapidly and quantitatively, but reduction proceeds slowly. The acid chlorides and esters tested are all rapidly reduced to the corresponding alcohols. Alkyl halides and epoxides are reduced rapidly with an uptake of 1 equiv of hydride. Styrene oxide is reduced to give 1-phenylethanol quantitatively. Primary amides are reduced slowly. Benzonitrile consumes 2.0 equiv of hydride rapidly, whereas capronitrile is reduced slowly. Nitro compounds consumed 2.9 equiv of hydride, of which 1.9 equiv is for reduction, whereas azobenzene, and azoxybenzene are inert toward this reagent. Cyclohexanone oxime is reduced consuming 2.0 equiv of hydride for reduction at a moderate rate. Pyridine is inert toward this reagent. Disulfides and sulfoxides are reduced slowly, whereas sulfide, sulfone, and sulfonate are inert under these reaction conditions. Sulfonic acid evolves 1 equiv of hydrogen instantly, but reduction is not proceeded.
In this study, polyethylene oxide (PEO)/polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-COOH composite membranes were prepared by adding 1, 2, 3, and 5 wt% of MWCNT-COOH to PEO/EVA respectively. The gas permeation properties of $N_2$, $O_2$ and $CO_2$ at $30^{\circ}C$ and 4~8 bar pressure were investigated. In each PEO/EVA/MWCNT-COOH composite membranes, the permeability of $CO_2$ increased with increasing the pressure, but the permeability of $N_2$ and $O_2$ were independent of the feeding pressure. As the MWCNT-COOH content increased, the $CO_2$ permeability increased and then decreased above 2 wt% MWCNT-COOH content. The 2 wt% MWCNT-COOH composite membrane exhibited a $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of 77.8 and a $CO_2$ permeability of 84 barrer at 8 bar. The high $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity and $CO_2$ permeability were due to the high affinity between the quadrupolar $CO_2$, polar ether groups of PEO, and the polar ester groups of EVA. Additionally, the strong affinity between $CO_2$ and the -COOH groups on the MWCNT surface contributed to the high permeability of $CO_2$.
A homologous series of side chain liquid crystalline polymers, poly [1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxyalkyloxy}ethylene]s(CAPETn, where n, the number of methylene units in the spacer, is $2{\sim}10$) were synthesized from poly(vinyl alcohol) and 1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkylbromides(CAPBn, n=$2{\sim}10$), and their thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behaviors were investigated. The CAPBn with n of $2{\sim}5$ did not show any liquid crystalline behavior, while those with n of 6 and $7{\sim}10$ showed enantiotropic and monotropic nematic phases, respectively. In contrast, among the CAPETn polymers, only CAPET5 exhibited an enantiotropic nematic phase, while other polymers showed monotropic nematic phases. The isotropic-nematic transition temperatures of CAPETns and their entropy variation at the phase transition that were higher values than those of CAPBns, demonstrated a typical odd-even effect as a function of n. These phase transition behaviors were disscussed in terms of the 'virtual trimer model' by Imrie. The mesophase properties of CAPETns were largely different from those reported for the polymers in which the (cyanophenylazo) phenoxy groups are attached to polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, and polystyrene backbones through polymethylene spacers. The results indicate that the mode of chemical linkage of the side group with the main chain plays an important role in the formation, stabilization, and type of mesophase.
This study was conducted to establish the most appropriate transplanting time which can attribute to increase of aromatic substances in tobacco variety, Hyangcho, maintaining its original aroma. The highest content of total alkaloid, total nicotine and total nitrogenous compounds were observed in the late transplanting time such as July 5, showing 4.16%, 3.83% and 3.68%, respectively. However, the petroleum ether extract was highest in the early transplanted one such as April 5, showing 5.77% and total sugar content, 12% in April 20. The content of petroleum ether extract decreased as the transplanting time delayed. The early transplanting of Hyangcho on April 20 under vinyl mulching showed the increase of fatty acid content, but the decrease of non-volatile organic acids such as malic and citric acids than those of the conventional transplanting time on March 5. The earlier transplanting time also increased the content of volatile acids such as 2,3-methylbutanoic acid and 3-methyl-pentanoic acid, which seem to be related to tobacco aroma.

Dimethyl 1-(4-nitrobenzoyl)-8-oxo-2,8-dihydro-1H-pyrazolo[5,1-a]isoindole-2,3-dicarboxylate has been used as an ionophore and o-nitrophenyloctyl ether as a plasticizer in order to develop a poly(vinyl chloride)-based membrane electrode for calcium ion detection. The sensors exhibit significantly enhanced response towards calcium(II) ions over the concentration range $8.0{\times}10^{-7}\;1.0{\times}10^{-1}$ M at pH 3.0-11 with a lower detection limit of $5.0 {\times}10^{-7}$ M. The sensors display Nernstian slope of 29.5 ${\pm}$ 0.5 mV per decade for Ca(II) ions. Effects of plasticizers, lipophilic salts and various foreign common ions are tested. It has a fast response time within 10 s over the entire concentration range and can be used for at least 2 months without any divergence in potentials. The proposed electrode revealed good selectivity and response for $Ca^{2+}$ over a wide variety of other metal ions. The selectivity of the sensor is comparable with those reported for other such electrodes. The proposed sensor was successfully applied as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of a Ca(II) solution, with EDTA.

A $Cu^{2+}$ ion-selective membrane microelectrode has been fabricated from poly vinyl chloride (PVC) matrix membrane containing a new symmetrical hexadentate Schiff,s base 2-{1-(E)-2-((Z)-2-{(E)-2-[(Z)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]hydrazono}-1-methylpropylidene)hydrazono]ethyl}phenol (HDNOS) as a neutral carrier, Potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate (KTpClPB) as an anionic excluder and o-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE) as a plasticizing solvent mediator. The microelectrode displays linear potential response in the concentration range of $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-5}-1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-11}$ M of $Cu^{2+}$. The microelectrode exhibits a nice Nernstian slope of 25.9 ${\pm}$ 0.3 mV $decade^{-1}$ in the pH range of 3.1-8.1. The sensor has a relatively short response time in whole concentration ranges ($\sim$5 s). The detection limit of proposed sensor is $5.0\;{\times}\;10^{-12}$ M (320 pg/L), and it can be used over a period of eight weeks. The practical utility of the sensor has been demonstrated by using it as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of $Cu^{2+}$ with EDTA. The proposed membrane electrode was used for the direct determining of $Cu^{2+}$ content in black and red pepper, and in waste water samples.

A La (III) ion-selective membrane sensor has been fabricated from poly vinyl chloride (PVC) matrix membrane, containing 3-hydroxy-N'-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)-2-naphthohydrazide (HPMN) as a neutral carrier, potassium tetrakis (p-chlorophenyl) borate (KTpClPB) as an anionic excluder and ortho-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE) as a plasticizing solvent mediator. The effects of membrane composition and pH as well as the influence of the anionic additive on the response properties were investigated. The sensor with 30% PVC, 62% solvent mediator, 6% ionophore and 2% anionic additive, shows the best potentiometric response characteristics. It displays a Nernstian behavior (19.2 mV per decade) across the range of $1.0{\times}10^{-2}-1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M. The detection limit of the electrode is $7.0{\times}10^{-8}$ M ($\sim$10 ng/mL) and the response time is 15 s from $1.0{\times}10^{-2}$ up to $1.0{\times}10^{-4} $M and 30 s in the range of $1.0 {\times}10^{-5}-1.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M. The sensor can be used in the pH values of 3.0-9.0 for about seven weeks. The membrane sensor was used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of lanthanum ions with EDTA. It was successfully applied to the lanthanum determination in some mouth wash preparations.
Ion-selective poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) membrane electrodes for the determination of the calcium antagonist verapamil and its pharmaceutical preparations were described. Verapam il-superchrome garnet Y(SGY), lumogallion(LG), acid red 97(AR97), Dragendorff(DD) and Meyer reagent ion pairs were inverstigated as an electroactive compound for membrane electrode. Stable potentiometric response was obtained with azo dye at pH 6.5-4.0 and with DD, and Meyer reagent at pH 6.5-3.0. The best plasticizer was 49w/w% 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether for azo dye, and 65.3w/w% tri(n-butyl) citrate for DD and Meyer reagent. Potentiometric response slopes of optimized membrane electrodes based on SGY, LG, AR97, DD, and Meyer complex for verapamil were 52.49, 54.88, 50.81, 54.13 and 49.31 mV/dec., respectively. Lower limits of linear range were $1.0{\times}10^6M$ for SGY, LG, and AR97, while those for DD and Meyer reagent were $4{\times}10^{-6}M$. Detection limits for all these electrodes were $1{\times}10^{-5}M,\;4{\times}10^{-6}M,\;1.8{\times}10^{-6}M,\;8{\times}10^{-7}M,\;and\;1{\times}10^{-6}M$ with relative standard deviation of 2.56, 3.6, 3.96, 2.56, 3.20%, respectively.
