  • To develop appropriate potato clones as functional food materials, we collected 35 potato breeding clones to analyze the contents of the total polyphenol, anthocyanin, and vitamin C with the 'Superior', 'Dasom valley', and 'Gogu valley' cultivars as controls. Based on our analysis great differences were observed in different potato clones. KPG16 had the highest content of total polyphenol at $105.08mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;FW$; KPG13 had the highest content of anthocyanin at ${\cdot}4.78mg100g^{-1}\;FW$; KPG20 had the highest content of vitamin C at $22.16mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;FW$. Some clones had higher contents of the total polyphenol but lower levels of anthocyanin. Ultimately, potato clones showing relatively high indexes for all three compounds, could be considered as good functional food material. By equilibrium analysis of the contents of total polyphenol, anthocyanin, and vitamin C, KPG5 showed relatively higher contents, with values of 103.95, 3.15, $12.12mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;FW$, respectively. Therefore, KPG5 was considered to be the best potato breeding clone in view of a functional potato breeding system.

  • Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI) is a payload on the Korean Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) to perform worldwide ocean color monitoring for the study of biological oceanography. The instrument images the ocean surface using a whisk-broom motion with a swath width of 800 km and a ground sample distance (GSD) of less than 1 km over the entire field-of-view (FOV). The instrument is designed to have an on-orbit operation duty cycle of 20% over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable gain/offset and on-orbit image data storage. The instrument also performs sun calibration and dark calibration for on-orbit instalment calibration. The OSMI instrument is a multi-spectral imager covering the spectral range from 400 nm to 900 nm using a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) Focal Plane Array (FPA). The ocean colors are monitored using 6 spectral channels that can be selected via ground commands after launch. The instrument performances are fully measured for 8 basic spectral bands centered at 412, 443, 490, 510, 555, 670, 765 and 865 nm during ground characterization of instalment. In addition to the ground calibration, the on-orbit calibration will also be used for the on-orbit band selection. The on-orbit band selection capability can provide great flexibility in ocean color monitoring.

  • To investigate the current pest management status in Korea, a survey was conducted from 151 students and graduates in the Korea National College of Agriculture and Fisheries (KNCAF) by on-line. The questionnaire consists of two divisions, basic questions and pest control questions. The basic questions were including the respondent's age, academic status, cultivating crops and cultivating area. The pest control questions were including pest control methods, pesticide selection rationale, and pest forecasting methods. As a summary of basic questions, the respondents in their 20s accounted for 91.2%. Moreover, 34.5% of the respondents had over 3 hectares of cultivating area. The cultivating methods were differed by cultivating crops. As a summary of pest control questions, major control methods were using the conventional chemicals (>66%). To understand the pesticide selection rationale, farmers/respondents made their own decisions based on existing control techniques (30%) or depended on the decisions of pesticide vendors (29%). As for the pest forecasting method, it was mainly conducted by the Rural Development Administration affiliated organization (29%) and the National Crop Pest Management System (27%). Regarding the reliability of the pest diagnosis and pesticide prescription of pesticide vendors, 97% of the respondents marked above average. However, there was no choice on strong reliability. Interestingly, 79% of the respondents agreed to train experts for pest diagnosis and pesticide prescription with high necessity and, in particular, 47% of respondents were very strongly supported. These results suggest that the farmers might be need more qualified experts in pest diagnosis and pesticide prescriptions. Taken together, these survey results would provide important information to understand the current status of pest management by farmers' point of view and useful to set the direction of pest control.

  • The dominant model of acquiring scholarly contents at academic libraries is so called big deal where libraries subscribe to a bundle of hundreds, if not thousands of journals in a multi-year contract with fixed annual rate increase. The bid deal, started in the mid-1990s, offered a number of advantages for academic libraries and their users. However, escalating prices for these packages have become a serious issue casting doubts about the sustainability of the subscription-based model. At the moment, it appears there is no viable alternative other than pay-per-view method that is being tested at some libraries. Libraries' budget situation will remain a key factor that might change the situation. Open access started in the 2000s as a vehicle to eliminate barriers to publishing and distributing peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles. Open access publishing is witnessing two-digit growth annually. Open access articles now occupy close to 20% of two major citation databases: Scopus and Web of Science. Google Scholar service, debuted in late 2004, is now a popular tool for discovering and accessing scholarly articles from a vast selection of journals around the world. There is a call for taking Google Scholar seriously as a potential replacement of library databases amid concerns regarding the quality of journals indexed, limited search capabilities vis-$\grave{a}$-vis library databases, and monopoly of public goods. Escalating budget problems, rapid growth of open access publishing and the emergence of powerful free tool, such as Google Scholar, need to be taken seriously as these forces might bring disruptive changes to the existing subscription-based model of scholarly contents at academic libraries.

  • Recently, stereotactic radiosurgery plan is required with the information of 3-D image and dose distribution. The purpose of this research is to develop 3-D radiosurgery planning system using personal computer. The procedure of this research is based on three steps. The first step is to input the image information of the patient obtained from CT or MR scan into personal computer through on-line or digitizer. The position and shape of target are also transferred into computer using Angio or CT localization. The second step is to compute dose distribution on image plane, which is transformed into stereotactic frame coordinate. and to optimize dose distribution through the selection of optimal treatment parameters. The third step is to display both isodose distribution and patient image simultaneously using superimpose technique. This prototype of radiosurgery planning system was applied recently for several clinical cases. It was shown that our planning system is fast, accurate and efficient while making it possible to handle various kinds of image modelities such as angio, CT and MRI. It is also possible to develop 3-D planning system in radiation therapy using beam's eye view or CT simulation in future.

  • In this paper, we propose the extension of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) header for efficient adaptation of multi-layer coded video such as scalable video coding (SVC) and multiview video coding (MVC) in the HTTP streaming. First of all, the limit of the existing TS in terms of flexible adaptation of multi-layer video is investigated, and the signaling by extending TS header is proposed to provide efficient adaptation in a TS level. The proposed extension utilizes the private data field in the adaptation field of TS header to signal scalability and/or view information, which enable us to support diverse adaptation that suits underlying constraints of client capabilities, network conditions and user preferences. In short, the extension enables adaptation of scalable video with full scalability as well as view selection of multiview video in a TS level while keeping backward compatibility with the existing TS syntax/semantics. The performance of the proposed extension is compared with the existing adaptation using PID (packet ID) in terms of efficiency and complexity of adaptation. Furthermore, the increase of TS overhead caused by proposed extension is analyzed and an extension scheme to minimized the overhead is proposed.
