This paper presents a method to reduce the vibration-induced noise effect of an inertial measurement device mounted on a self-driving vehicle. The inertial sensor used in the GNSS/INS integrated navigation system of a self-driving vehicle is fixed directly on the chassis of vehicle body so that its navigation output is affected by the vibration of the vehicle's engine, resulting in the degradation of the navigational performance. Therefore, these effects must be considered when mounting the inertial sensor. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes to use an in-house manufactured vibration suppression device and analyzes its impact on reducing the vibration effect. Experimental test results in a static scenario show that the vibration-induced noise effect is more clearly observed in the lateral direction of the vehicle, but can be effectively suppressed by using the proposed vibration suppression device compared to the case without it. In addition, the dynamic positioning test scenario shows the position, speed, and posture errors are reduced to 74%, 67%, and 14% levels, respectively.
This paper is concerned with the sweeping damping controller for beam. The active damping characteristics can be enhanced by moving the damper along the longitudinal axis. In this paper, the equation of motion for a beam including a sweeping damping controller is derived and its stability is proved by using Lyapunov stability theorem. It is found from the theoretical study that the sweeping damping controller can enhance the active damping characteristics, so that a single damper can suppress all the vibration modes of the beam. To demonstrate the concept of the sweeping damping control, the eddy current damper was applied to a cantilever, where the eddy current damping can move along the axis. The experimental result shows that the sweeping eddy current damper Is an effective device for vibration suppression.
This paper presents the series multiple tuned mass dampers (STMDs) to suppress the resonant vibrations of railway bridges under the passage of high-speed trains (HSTs). A STMD device consisting of two spring-mass-damper units connected each other in series is installed on the bridge. In solution, bridge is modeled as a simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beam with constant cross-section, and vehicle is simulated as a series of moving forces with constant speed. By the assumed mode method, the governing equations of motion of the beam-TMD device coupled system traversed by a moving train are obtained. The optimum values for the parameters of the STMD device are obtained for the criterion based on the minimization of the maximum dynamic displacement of the beam at its midspan. Single TMD and multiple TMDs in parallel are also considered for demonstration of the STMD device's performance. The results show that STMDs are effective in bridge vibration suppression and robust to parameters' change in the main system and the absorber itself.
This paper is concerned with the eddy current damper which can be used to enhance the damping of the host structure. The operating principle of the eddy current damper is first explained in detail. The dynamic interaction between the magnets and the copper plate produces eddy current thus resulting in the damping force. By attaching the eddy current damper to the host structure, the damping of the total structure can be increased so that vibrations can be suppressed. The advantage of the eddy current damper is that it doesn't require any electronic devices and power supply The effect of the eddy current damper on the global dynamic characteristics of the structure is investigated by considering the cantilever with the eddy current damper. Experimental results show that the eddy current damper is an effective device for vibration suppression.

In this paper, the feasibility of the high-performance damping device vibration suppression of stay cables has been investigated. The proposed damping system consists of a linear viscous damper and a scissor-jack-type toggle linkage. Since the mechanism of the scissor-jack-type toggle linkage amplifies the relative displacement of the linear viscous damper, it is expected that the capacity of the viscous damper used in the scissor-jack-damper energy dissipation system can be reduced without the loss of the control performance. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the damping system employing the scissor-jack-type toggle linkage. Therefore, the proposed damping system could be considered as one of the promising candidates for suppressing vibration of stay cable.
Chip mounter which is used to pick chips from the pre-specified position and place them on the target location of PCB is an essential device in semiconductor and LCD industries. Quick and high precision positioning is the key technology needed to increase productivity of chip mounters. As increasing acceleration and deceleration of placing motion, structural vibration induced from inertial reactive force and flexibility of mounter structure becomes a serious problem degrading positioning accuracy. Motivated from these, this paper proposed a new control design algorithm which combines a mounter structure acceleration feedforward compensation and an extended sliding mode control for fine positioning and suppression of structural vibration, simultaneously. The feasibility of the proposed control design was verified along with some simulation results.
Active vibration control algorithms for the compensator and proto-type testing system have been developed for the suppression of vibrations from the reciprocating engines. At first, the developed algorithm determines optimal control vibration phases by detecting vibration responses of the engine without and with compensator, and then performs the continuous optimal control functions by tracking the change of the vibration frequency and phase. This algorithm is comparatively simple. robust for the external excitations and needless of supplementary operation since the control process is serially carried out. To validate the performance of compensator and algorithm, testing system including excitation device are constructed and tested, and the reductions of vibration levels are observed over than 80 % of the uncontrolled levels at various frequency ranges.
Slewing maneuver and vibration suppression control of flexible spacecraft model by Lyapunov stability theory are considered. The specific model considered in this paper consists of a rigid hub with an elastic appendage attached to the central hub and tip mass. Attitude control to point and stabilize single axis using reaction wheel type device is tested. To control all flexible modes is so critical to designing an active control law. We therefore considered an direct output feeback control design by using Lyapunov stability theory. It is shown that the ouput feedback control law design with proposed configuration gives satisfactory result in slewing performance and vibration suppression control.
This paper presents the design and the application of a new self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper that can harvest energy while mitigating the vibration of a structure. The damper is able to switch between an energy harvesting passive mode and a semi-active mode depending on the amount of energy harvested and stored in the battery. The energy harvested in the passive mode resulting from the suppression of vibration is employed to power up the monitoring and electronic components necessary for the semi-active control. This provides a hybrid control capability that is autonomous in terms of its power requirement. The proposed hybrid circuit design provides two possible options for the semi-active control: without energy harvesting and with energy harvesting. The device mechanism and the circuitry that can drive this self-powered electromagnetic damper are described in this paper. The parameters that determine the device feasible force-velocity region are identified and discussed. The effectiveness of this hybrid damper is evaluated through a numerical simulation study on vibration mitigation of a bridge stay cable under wind excitation. It is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid design outperforms the passive case without external power supply. It is also shown that a broader force range, facilitated by decoupled passive and semi-active modes, can improve the vibration performance of the cable.
