  • An algorithm is proposed for computing dynamic displacements of a bridge using FBG sensors. An existing algorithm for estimating dynamic displacements of a simply supported beam through mode superposition is extended and applied to various types of bridges with bending and torsional modes. The proposed algorithm is examined through field tests on a suspension span steel deck plate box girder bridge. Guidelines are provided for determining the number of modes and the number of strain gages to be used.

  • In this paper, static analysis of eddy current brake′s frame, which is one of key structural components of brake system for high speed train, was performed in order to evaluate the design by computer simulation. Calculation was carried out in general for the driving modes "braking" and "frame in upper position(brakes inactive)". Several yield stress load cases and fatigue load cases were analysed fur each of the driving modes. (omitted)

  • There are many researches to identify the rigid body properties from the mass-line obtained by impact hammer testing. The correct rigid body properties of the structure may be estimated if the mass-line of the structure could be obtained exactly. When the structure is mounted by elastic materials, the mass-line cannot be read correctly from the impulse response spectrum. The reason is due to the effects of rigid body modes of mounted structure. (omitted)

  • In this work we use the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor. The mode decomposition technique is also used to estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize axial defects. The arrival times of the separated modes are calculated and the axial defect lengths can be evaluated by using the estimated arrival time. Results from an experiment on a carbon steel pipe are presented and it is shown that the accurate and quantitative defect characterization could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • An analytical method for the free vibration of two circular plates coupled with an inviscid and compressible fluid is developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The fluid is bounded by a rigid cylindrical vessel and two circular plates with an unequal thickness and diameter. It was found that the theoretical results could predict well the fluid-coupled natural frequencies with an excellent accuracy when compared with the finite element analysis results. As the fluid thickness increases or the plate thickness difference increases, an abrupt curve veering in the natural frequency loci of the neighboring modes and drastic changes in the corresponding mode shapes are observed. The mode localization frequently appears in the higher modes and in the wide gap between the plates because of a decrease in the fluid coupling owing to the fluid dispersion effect.

  • Transverse vibrations of ship's aft end and deckhouse among the various modes of hull structures are induced mainly by transverse exciting forces and moments of main engine such as ${\times}$ and h-moment. Avoidance of resonance should be made in a intial design stage in case there is a prediction for resonance between main engine and transverse modes of deckhouse. This study shows a case of change in type of main engine from 12 cylinders to 10 without modification of hull structures in engine room requested by a shipowner of 8,600 TEU class container carrier and proposes a guide to the effective ways of structural arrangement for avoiding resonance between transverse exciting force and surrounding structures of main engine in engine room through case studies.

  • A new nonlinear static analysis method, Effective Modal Pushover Analysis (EMPA) which can evaluate earthquake responses such as story drift and plastic rotation of plastic hinges addressing higher mode effects was developed. Unlike existing nonlinear static procedure based on properties of fundamental vibration mode, the EMPA performs nonlinear static analysis using multiple effective modes constructed by direct combination of natural vibration modes. Therefore higher mode effects can be efficiently considered. In the present study, procedures of the EPMA evaluating inelastic earthquake responese were established and the results were verified by nonlinear time history analysis. The EMPA can be applied to seismic evaluation of high-rise buildings and irregular buildings where higher mode effects become conspicuous.

  • A large floating structure is attracting great attention in recent years from the view of ocean space utilization. Its huge scale in the horizontal directions compared with the wavelength and relatively shallow depth make this type of floating structure flexible and its wave-induced motion be characterized by the elastic deformation. In this paper, a boundary integral equation method is proposed to predict the wave-induced dynamic response mat-like floating offshore structure. The structure is modeled as an clastic plate and its elastic deformation is expressed as a superposition of free-vibration modes in air. This makes it straightforward to expand the well-established boundary integral technique for rigid floating bodies to include the hydroelastic effects. In order to validate the theoretical analysis, we compare with the experimental result of previous model test. Satisfactory agreement is found between theory and experiment.

  • The objective of this investigation is to develop an efficient method to generate and measure torsional waves in non-ferromagnetic waveguides by using magnetostrictive transducers. In existing methods using a nickel strip that is attached circumferentially to the test specimen, large current input to the magnetostrictive transducer often generates undesired wave modes in addition to the desired torsional wave. However, we propose a new method to generate the torsional waves without being accompanied with other undesirable wane modes regardless of the input current magnitude. The specific transducer configuration is suggested and its performance is also checked through a series of experiments.

  • The response characteristics of one to one resonance on the quadrangle cantilever beam in which basic harmonic excitations are applied by nonlinear coupled differential-integral equations are studied. This equations have 3-dimensional non-linearity of nonlinear inertia and nonlinear curvature. Galerkin and multi scale methods are used for theoretical approach to one-to-one internal resonance. Nonlinear response characteristics of 1st, 2nd, 3rd modes are measured from the experiment for basic harmonic excitation. From the experimental result, geometrical terms of non-linearity display light spring effect and these terms play an important role in the response characteristics of low frequency modes. Nonlinear nitration in the out of plane are also studied.
