  • Recently microscale biofluid flows have been receiving large attention in various research areas. However, most conventional imaging techniques are unsatisfactory due to difficulties encountered in the visualization of microscale biological flows. Recent advances in optics and digital image processing techniques have made it possible to develop several advanced micro-PIV/PTV techniques. They can be used to get quantitative velocity field information of various biofluid flows from visualized images of tracer particles. In this paper, as new advanced micro-PIV techniques suitable for biofluid flow analysis, the basic principle and typical applications of the time-resolved micro-PIV and X-ray micro-PIV methods are explained. As a 3D velocity field measurement technique for measuring microscale flows, holographic micro-PTV method is introduced. These advanced PIV/PTV techniques can be used to reveal the basic physics of various microscale biological flows and will play an important role in visualizing veiled biofluid flow phenomena, for which conventional methods have many difficulties to analyze.

  • Two multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) surveys were conducted over a soil site in Tacoma Water's Green River Facility, Washington, where construction of a chemical treatment facility had been planned. The purpose of the surveys was to compare soil stiffness characterized by shear-velocity (Vs) distribution before and after Deep Dynamic Compaction (DDC) operation that was designed to improve the soil stiffness. Site soil consisted of very heterogeneous gravel and cobbles in a sand-and-silt matrix. Results from each survey are represented by two 2-D Vs maps delineating Vs variation of soil below the surveyed lines. One map was constructed from those dispersion curves that were analyzed with a significant amount of subjective judgment involved, whereas the other map was constructed from those dispersion curves analyzed with as much objective information as possible. Comparison of 2-D Vs maps indicates that Vs actually decreased after the DDC operations, possibly due to the loss (or reduction) of cohesive bonding between soil particles caused by the compaction operations.

  • In this paper, an adaptive formation control based on the leader-following approach is proposed for multiple mobile robots with time varying parameters. The proposed controller does not require the velocity information of the leader robot, which is commonly assumed that it is either measured or telecommunicated. In order to estimate time varying velocities of the leader robot, the smooth projection algorithm is employed. From the Lyapunov stability theory, it is proved that the proposed control scheme can guarantee the uniform ultimate boundedness of error signals of the closed-loop system. Finally, the computer simulations are performed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control system.

  • The dispersion characteristics of tape meander line were analyzed by electromagnetic field theory. The several different tape meander lines were photoetched on copper printed-bakelit substrate, and these tape meander line structures were inserted into the X-band waveguide. Phase bridge method was used for the dispersion characteristics measurement of meanderline. The measured. results were plotted on diagram(Brillouin diagram) and compared with theoretical values. Measured results were consistent with theoretical Values. But, on the measured diagram, passband midfrequency was lower than theoretical value. It was believed that the discrepancy was due to the backelite loading. The group velocity of stagger tuned meander line was higher than that of uniform meander live, and the freqnency band of constant group velocity of stagger tuned meanderline was sider than that of uniform meander line.

  • A measurement technique of the surface generation velocity S$_o$ using the BC(buried channel) MOS structure with shallow and low doped channel layer (BC MOS S$_o$ measurement technique) is presented and verified analytically and experimentally. Using this measurement technique, S$_o$ can be measured more accurately than that measured using the gate-controlled diode SS1oT measurement technique. When S$_o$ is measured for the two techniques from a BC MOS structure test patten with gate length of 171$\mu$m, the results are 0,66cm/sec and 0.28cm/sec for the former and the latter respectively.

  • Flame propagation characteristics of propane-air mixtures were experimentally investigated in constant-volume combustion chambers. Flame propagation process was observed as a function of mixture strength, initial mixture temperature and initial mixture pressure in quiescent mixtures. A cylindrical combustion chamber and a spherical combustion chamber contain a pair of parallel windows through which optical access into the chamber can be provided. Laser two beam deflection method was adopted to measure the local flame propagation, which gave information on the flame size and flame propagation speed. Pressure development was also measured by a piezoelectric pressure transducer to characterize combustion in quiescent mixtures. Burning velocity was calculated from flame propagation and pressure measurements. The effect of flow on flame propagation was also investigated under flowing mixture conditions. Laser two beam method was found to be feasible in measuring flame propagation of quiescent mixtures. Flame was observed to propagate faster with higher initial mixture temperature and lower initial pressure. Combustion duration was shortened in the highly turbulent flowing mixtures.

  • For this study we used a CCD video camera to capture the pavement image information via the computer. During investigation processing, the CCD video camera captured 10${\sim}$30 images per second. If the vehicle velocity is too fast, the collected images will be duplicated and if the velocity is too slow there will be a gapped between images. Therefore, in order to control the efficiency of the image grabber we should add accessory tools such as the Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and odometer. Furthermore, Kalman Filtering can also solve these problems. After the CCD video camera captured the pavement images, we used the Least-Squares method to eliminate images of gradation which have non-uniform surfaces due to the illumination at night. The Fuzzy Entropy method calculates images of threshold segments and creates binary images. Finally, the Object Labeling algorithm finds objects that are cracks or noises from the binary image based on volume pixels of the object. We used these algorithms and tested them, also providing some discussion and suggestions.
