Coherent Structures beneath Wind-Generated Deepwater Waves (심해 풍파 아래에서의 응집 구조)

  • The results of experimental investigation of coherent structures beneath wind-generated waves in deep water are presented. Vorticity fields of deepwater wind waves were visualized by analyzing the velocity fields obtained by PIV measurements under different wind and fetch conditions. In addition, spatio-temporal evolution of the coherent structures and subsequent changes in vertical profiles of the instantaneous vorticity were qualitatively examined. It was found that a coherent structure is formed right underneath the wave crest and traveled in phase with the surface wave. The direction of rotation of the coherent structure was contrary to the wave orbital motion when wind speed is less than 10 m/s, while was same as the wave orbital motion when wind speed is approximately 13 m/s and wave breaking occurs at the wave crest. In the near-surface region, complex vortex-vortex interactions were observed according to the traveling of the coherent structure. In contrast, coherent structures far below the water surface changed little due to weak influence of orbital motion by the surface waves.

A Numerical Analysis of Free Surface Wave around a ship (선체주위 자유수면파의 수치해석)

  • A numerical method for simulations of inviscid incompressible flow fields around a ship advancing on the free surface is developed. A body fitted coordinate system, generated by numerically solving elliptic type partial differential equations is used to conform the ship and free surface configurations. Three dimensional Euler equations transformed to the non-staggered body fitted coordinate system are discretised by finite difference method. Time and spatial derivatives are discretised by forward and centered differencings, respectively, and artificial dissipations are added to discretised convection terms for improvements of numerical stability. At each time steps, free surface elevations are recomputed to satisfy nonlinear free surface conditions. Poisson equations for pressure field are solved iteratively and the velocity field for next time step is extrapolated. To verify the developed numerical method, flow fields around a Wigley model are simulated(Fn=0.250-0.408) and compared with experimental data to show good agreements.

The progress of KMTNet microlensing

  • We report the status of KMTNet (Korea Microlensing Telescope Network) microlensing. From KMTNet event-finder, we are annually detecting over 2500 microlensing events. In 2018, we have carried out a real-time alert for only the Northern bulge fields. It was very helpful to select Spitzer targets. Thanks to the real-time alert, KMT-only events for which OGLE and MOA could not detect have been largely increased. The KMTNet event-finder and alert-finder algorithms are being upgraded every year. From these, we found 18 exoplanets and various interesting events, such as an exomoon-candidate, a free-floating candidate, and brown dwarfs, which are very difficult to be detected by other techniques including radial velocity and transit. In 2019, the KMTNet alert will be available in real-time for all bulge fields. As before, we will continue to collaborate with Spitzer team to measure the microlens parallaxes, which are required for estimating physical parameters of the lens. Thus, the KMTNet alert will be helpful to select Spitzer targets again. Also we plan to do follow-up observations for high-magnification events to study the planet multiplicity function. The KMTNet alert will play an important role to do follow-up observations for high-magnification events. Also, we will search for free-floating planets with short timescale (< 3 days) to study the planet frequency in our Galaxy.

Non-Gaussian wind features over complex terrain under atmospheric turbulent boundary layers: A case study

  • In wind-resistant designs, wind velocity is assumed to be a Gaussian process; however, local complex topography may result in strong non-Gaussian wind features. This study investigates the non-Gaussian wind features over complex terrain under atmospheric turbulent boundary layers by the large eddy simulation (LES) model, and the turbulent inlet of LES is generated by the consistent discretizing random flow generation (CDRFG) method. The performance of LES is validated by two different complex terrains in Changsha and Mianyang, China, and the results are compared with wind tunnel tests and onsite measurements, respectively. Furthermore, the non-Gaussian parameters, such as skewness, kurtosis, probability curves, and gust factors, are analyzed in-depth. The results show that the LES method is in good agreement with both mean and turbulent wind fields from wind tunnel tests and onsite measurements. Wind fields in complex terrain mostly exhibit a left-skewed Gaussian process, and it changes from a softening Gaussian process to a hardening Gaussian process as the height increases. A reduction in the gust factors of about 2.0%-15.0% can be found by taking into account the non-Gaussian features, except for a 4.4% increase near the ground in steep terrain. This study can provide a reference for the assessment of extreme wind loads on structures in complex terrain.

Particle-motion-tracking Algorithm for the Evaluation of the Multi-physical Properties of Single Nanoparticles (단일 나노입자의 다중 물리량의 평가를 위한 입자 모션 트랙킹 알고리즘)

  • The physical properties of biomaterials are important for their isolation and separation from body fluids. In particular, the precise evaluation of the multi-physical properties of single biomolecules is essential in that the correlation between physical and biological properties of specific biomolecule. However, the majority of scientific equipment, can only determine specific-physical properties of single nanoparticles, making the evaluation of the multi-physical properties difficult. The improvement of analytical techniques for the evaluation of multi-physical properties is therefore required in various research fields. In this study, we developed a motion-tracking algorithm to evaluate the multi-physical properties of single-nanoparticles by analyzing their behavior. We observed the Brownian motion and electric-field-induced drift of fluorescent nanoparticles injected in a microfluidic chip with two electrodes using confocal microscopy. The proposed algorithm is able to determine the size of the nanoparticles by i) removing the background noise from images, ii) tracking the motion of nanoparticles using the circular-Hough transform, iii) extracting the mean squared displacement (MSD) of the tracked nanoparticles, and iv) applying the MSD to the Stokes-Einstein equation. We compared the evaluated size of the nanoparticles with the size measured by SEM. We also determined the zeta-potential and surface-charge density of the nanoparticles using the extracted electrophoretic velocity and the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation. The proposed motion-tracking algorithm could be employed in various fields related to biomaterial analysis, such as exosome analysis.

Numerical Simulation on Drag and Lift Coefficient around Ship Rudder using Computational Fluid Dynamics (전산 유체 역학을 이용한 선박 방향타 주변의 항력 및 양력 계수에 대한 수치 시뮬레이션)

  • Numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the rudder since they play an important role in naval architecture fields. Although some values such as hydrodynamics forces can be measured easily in the towing tanks, it is difficult to obtain the detailed information of the flow fields such as pressure distribution, velocity distribution, vortex generation from experiments. In the present study, the effects of hydrodynamic coefficients and Reynolds number acting on the rudder were studied by using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). Ansys fluent, one of commercial CFD solvers, solves the Navier-Stokes equations and the k-epsilon turbulence model is selected for the viscous model to solve RANS equations. At first, drag coefficients and lift coefficient for different angle of attack are obtained by using a CFD commercial code for KCS rudder. Secondly, the 2-D lift coefficients and drag coefficients are compared with 3-D coefficients at the same conditions. Thirdly, the effects of Reynolds number on the hydrodynamic forces are investigated.

Study on Friction Energy of Rubber Block Under Vertical Load and Horizontal Velocity (고무블록의 수직 하중 및 수평 속도에 따른 마찰에너지 연구)

  • Rubber is one of the most commonly used materials in various fields because of its unique viscoelastic properties. Friction occurs when a tire constantly makes contact with the ground. As a result, friction causes wear. The frictional energy caused by friction is a primary factor in the wear mechanism. The frictional energy is affected by various conditions (temperature, roughness of ground, shape of rubber, load, and materials). In this study, the analysis was preceded by considering the vertical load and the horizontal velocity to the rubber using ABAQUS/explicit. The contact pressure, and friction energy are derived using the shear force and slip distance. The actual behavior of the rubber test data were compared with the analysis results.

AUGMENTING WFIRST MICROLENSING WITH A GROUND-BASED TELESCOPE NETWORK

  • Augmenting the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) microlensing campaigns with intensive observations from a ground-based network of wide-field survey telescopes would have several major advantages. First, it would enable full two-dimensional (2-D) vector microlens parallax measurements for a substantial fraction of low-mass lenses as well as planetary and binary events that show caustic crossing features. For a significant fraction of the free-floating planet (FFP) events and all caustic-crossing planetary/binary events, these 2-D parallax measurements directly lead to complete solutions (mass, distance, transverse velocity) of the lens object (or lens system). For even more events, the complementary ground-based observations will yield 1-D parallax measurements. Together with the 1-D parallaxes from WFIRST alone, they can probe the entire mass range M ≳ M. For luminous lenses, such 1-D parallax measurements can be promoted to complete solutions (mass, distance, transverse velocity) by high-resolution imaging. This would provide crucial information not only about the hosts of planets and other lenses, but also enable a much more precise Galactic model. Other benefits of such a survey include improved understanding of binaries (particularly with low mass primaries), and sensitivity to distant ice-giant and gas-giant companions of WFIRST lenses that cannot be detected by WFIRST itself due to its restricted observing windows. Existing ground-based microlensing surveys can be employed if WFIRST is pointed at lower-extinction fields than is currently envisaged. This would come at some cost to the event rate. Therefore the benefits of improved characterization of lenses must be weighed against these costs.

Effect of Boundary Layer Thickness on the Flow Around a Rectangular Prism (직사각형 프리즘 주위의 유동구조에 대한 경계층 두께의 영향)

  • Effect of boundary layer thickness on the flow characteristics around a rectangular prism has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Three different boundary layers(thick, medium and thin)were generated in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at Pusan National University. The thick boundary layer having 670 mm thickness was generated by using spires and roughness elements. The medium thickness of boundary layer($\delta$=270 mm) was the natural turbulent boundary layer at the test section floor with fairly long developing length(18 m). The thin boundary layer($\delta$=36.5 mm) was generated on the smooth panel elevated 70cm from the wind tunnel floor. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity(3 ㎧) and the height of the model(40 mm) was 7.9$\times$10$^3$. The mean velocity vector fields and turbulent kinetic energy distributions were measured and compared. The effect of boundary layer thickness was clearly observed not only in the length of separation bubble but also in the location of reattachment point. The thinner the boundary layer thickness, the higher the turbulent kinetic energy Peak around the model roofbecame. It is strongly recommended that the height ratio between the model and the approaching boundary layer thickness should be encountered as a major parameter.

Trajectory Generation Method with Convolution Operation on Velocity Profile (속도 영역에서의 컨볼루션을 이용한 효율적인 궤적 생성 방법)

  • The use of robots is no longer limited to the field of industrial robots and is now expanding into the fields of service and medical robots. In this light, a trajectory generation method that can respond instantaneously to the external environment is strongly required. Toward this end, this study proposes a method that enables a robot to change its trajectory in real-time using a convolution operation. The proposed method generates a trajectory in real time and satisfies the physical limits of the robot system such as acceleration and velocity limit. Moreover, a new way to improve the previous method (11), which generates inefficient trajectories in some cases owing to the characteristics of the trapezoidal shape of trajectories, is proposed by introducing a triangle shape. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is shown through a numerical simulation and a comparison with the previous convolution method.
