Recently, two energy-based response parameters, i.e., the absolute and the relative elastic input energy equivalent velocity, have been receiving a lot of research attention. Several studies, in fact, have demonstrated the potential of these intensity measures in the prediction of the seismic structural response. Although some ground motion prediction equations have been developed for these parameters, they only provide marginal distributions without information about the joint occurrence of the spectral values at different periods. In order to build new prediction models for the two equivalent velocities, a large set of ground motion records is used to calculate the correlation coefficients between the response spectral values corresponding to different periods and components of the ground motion. Then, functional forms adopted in models from the literature are calibrated to fit the obtained data. A new functional form is proposed to improve the predictions of the considered models from the literature. The components of the ground motion considered in this study are the two horizontal ones only. Potential uses of the proposed equations in addition to the prediction of the correlation coefficients of the equivalent velocity spectral values are shown, such as the prediction of derived intensity measures and the development of conditional mean spectra.

In order to investigate change of vortex structures and its evolving proceses, two dimensional LDV system was used for measurement of velocity vectors of tip vortex, and PIV system was also used for visualizations of tip vortex array for two bladed rotor, respectively. Experiments provided vortex locations, tangential and axial velocity components of tip vortex at six wake ages of 9.5, 10.5, 60.5, 99.5, 129.5, 169.5 and corresponded six wake ages shifted with 180 degrees per each. It was resulted that tip vortices generated by the first blade satisfy Landgrebe's model for their vortex locations even after they were accelerated by the second blade in downstream. Tangential velocity components of tip vortices follow Vatistas' n=2 model on both inside and outside regions of rotor slipstream without loss of vortex circulation. Axial velocity profiles revealed that there were small but significant perturbations just outside the primary vortex core which implies the second blade affects the wake substantially. It was also found that tip paths of each blade were not willing to be coincided intrinsically.

This study reports the selection of dependent variables for momentum equations in general curvilinear coordinates. Catesian, covariant and contravariant velocity components were examined for the dependent variable. The focus of present study is confined to staggered grid system Each dependent variable selected for momentum equations are tested for several flow fields. Results show that the selection of Cartesian and covariant velocity components intrinsically can not satisfy mass conservation of control volume unless additional converting processes ore used. Also, Cartesian component can only be used for the flow field in which main-flow direction does not change significantly. Convergence rate for the selection of covariant velocity component decreases quickly as with the increase of non-orthogonality of grid system. But the selection of contravariant velocity component reduces the total mass residual of discretized equations rapidly to the limit of machine accuracy and the solutions are insensitive to the main-flow direction.
As wind farms expand into low wind speed areas, an increasing number are being established in mountainous regions. To fully utilize wind energy resources, it is essential to understand the details of mountain flow fields. Reconstructing the wind speed field in complex terrain is crucial for planning, designing, operation of wind farms, which impacts the wind farm's profits throughout its life cycle. Currently, wind speed reconstruction is primarily achieved through physical and machine learning methods. However, physical methods often require significant computational costs. Therefore, we propose a Full Convolutional Neural Network (FCNN)-based reconstruction method for mountain wind velocity fields to evaluate wind resources more accurately and efficiently. This method establishes the mapping relation between terrain, wind angle, height, and corresponding velocity fields of three velocity components within a specific terrain range. Guided by this mapping relation, wind velocity fields of three components at different terrains, wind angles, and heights can be generated. The effectiveness of this method was demonstrated by reconstructing the wind speed field of complex terrain in Beijing.
$H_2O$ maser emission at 22 GHz in the circumstellar envelope is one of the good tracers of detailed physics and kinematics in the mass loss process of asymptotic giant branch stars. Long-term monitoring of an $H_2O$ maser spectrum with high time resolution enables us to clarify acceleration processes of the expanding shell in the stellar atmosphere. We monitored the $H_2O$ maser emission of the semi-regular variable R Crt with the Kagoshima 6-m telescope, and obtained a large data set of over 180 maser spectra over a period of 1.3 years with an observational span of a few days. Using an automatic peak detection method based on least-squares fitting, we exhaustively detected peaks as significant velocity components with the radial velocity on a $0.1kms^{-1}$ scale. This analysis result shows that the radial velocity of red-shifted and blue-shifted components exhibits a change between acceleration and deceleration on the time scale of a few hundred days. These velocity variations are likely to correlate with intensity variations, in particular during flaring state of $H_2O$ masers. It seems reasonable to consider that the velocity variation of the maser source is caused by shock propagation in the envelope due to stellar pulsation. However, it is difficult to explain the relationship between the velocity variation and the intensity variation only from shock propagation effects. We found that a time delay of the integrated maser intensity with respect to the optical light curve is about 150 days.
Microstructural characteristics of directionally solidified René 80 superalloy are investigated with optical microscope and scanning electron microscope; solidification velocity is found to change from 25 to 200 μm/s under the condition of constant thermal gradient (G) and constant alloy composition (Co). Based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, γ phase (1,322 ℃), MC carbide (1,278 ℃), γ/γ' eutectic phase (1,202 ℃), and γ' precipitate (1,136 ℃) are formed sequentially during cooling process. The size of the MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phases gradually decrease with increasing solidification velocity, whereas the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are nearly constant as a function of solidification velocity. It is estimated that the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are determined not by the solidification velocity but by the alloy composition. Microstructural characteristics of René 80 superalloy after solid solution heat-treatment and primary aging heat-treatment are such that the size and the area fraction of γ' precipitate are nearly constant with solidification velocity and the area fraction of γ/γ' eutectic phase decreases from 1.7 % to 0.955 %, which is also constant regardless of the solidification velocity. However, the size of carbide solely decreases with increasing solidification velocity, which influences the tensile properties at room temperature.

A general scheme is developed which determines the Lagrangian motions of water particles by the Eulerian velocity at their mean positions by use of Taylor's theorem. Utilizing the Stokes finite-amplitude wave theory, the mass transport velocity which includes the effects of higher-order wave components is determined. The fifth-order theory predicts the mass transport velocity less than that given by the existing second-order theory over the whole depth. Limited experimental data for changes in wave celerity in closed wave flumes are compared with the theoretical predictions.
This paper investigates the response of nonstructural components in the presence of nonlinear behavior of the primary structure considering the near-fault pulse-like ground motions. A database of 81 near-fault pulse-like ground motions is used to examine the effect of these ground motions on the response of nonstructural components. For comparison, a database of 573 non-pulse-like ground motions selected from the PEER database is also employed. The effects of peak ground velocity (PGV), maximum incremental velocity (MIV), primary structural degrading behavior and damping of nonstructural components are evaluated and discussed statistically. Results are presented in terms of amplification factor which quantifies the effect of inelastic deformations of the primary structure on subsystem responses. The results indicate that the near-fault pulse-like ground motions can significantly increase the amplification factors of nonstructural components with primary structural period and the magnitude of increase can reach 17%. The effect of PGV and MIV on amplification factors tends to increase with the increase of primary structural ductility. The near-fault pulse-like ground motions are more dangerous to components supported by structures with strength and stiffness degrading behavior than ordinary ground motions. A new simplified formulation is proposed for the application of amplification factors for design of nonstructural components for near-fault pulse-like ground motions.

This study shows that the vertical migration speed of sound scattering layers (SSLs), which is distributed in near Funka Bay, were measured by 3D velocity components acquired from a bottom moorng ADCP. While the bottom mooring type has a problem to measure the velocity vectors of sound scattering layer distributed near to surface, both the continuous vertical migration patterns and variability of backscatterers were routinely investigated as well. In addition, the velocity vectors were compared with the vertical migration velocity estimated from echograms of Mean Volume Backscattering Strength, and estimated to produce observational bias due to SSLs which is composed of backscatterers such as euphausiids, nekton, and fishes have swimming ability.

Vertical velocity is critical in many areas, such as the control of unmanned aerial vehicles, fall detection, and virtual reality. Conventionally, the integration of GPS (Global Positioning System) with an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) was popular for the estimation of vertical components. However, GPS cannot work well indoors and, more importantly, has low accuracy in the vertical direction. In order to overcome these issues, IMU-barometer integration has been suggested instead of IMU-GPS integration. This paper proposes a new complementary filter for the estimation of vertical velocity based on IMU-barometer integration. The proposed complementary filter is designed to minimize drift error in the estimated velocity by adding PID control in addition to a zero velocity update technique.
