Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are a practical application class of wireless ad hoc networks, which consist of moving vehicles equipped with radio communication capabilities that collaborate to form a temporary network. This paper addresses issues and protocols of multihop routing in such emerging networks in the context of safety and infotainment applications. Due to the highly dynamic mobility of vehicles, frequent link breakage and short connection time are inevitable and, thus, the routing is a challenging task and interest for many researchers and industrial community. The frequent and dynamic change of topology makes the topology-based routing unreliable but the position-based routing more effective. The position-based routing consists of the location service which maps a node id to a geo-graphical position and the forwarding scheme which selects the next hop based on geo-graphical information of the node, its neighbors and the destination. The routing techniques are further categorized into geographical forwarding, trajectory forwarding and opportunistic forwarding based on the forwarding scheme. In this paper, we first present the distinguished properties of VANETs and the challenges and intractable issues posed in designing the routing protocols, followed by the comprehensive survey of existing routing protocols. Then, the different routing protocols designed for VANETs are compared in terms of characteristics, performance and application domains.

It has been a big trend of the convergence technologies about communication systems and vehicular industry to improve safety and convenience. To achieve a number of infotainment vehicular applications, vehicles should transmit information with high reliability. A robust and accurate channel estimation scheme is of great importance to achieve the goal. In this paper, we present a novel enhanced decision-directed channel estimation scheme called FADP (Frequency Averaging Data Pilot) for dynamic time-varying vehicular channels in IEEE 802.11p. We use linear averaging filtering in frequency domain, and utilize the correlation characteristic of the channels between the adjacent two data symbols, update the CR in time domain to get more accuracy. Finally, analysis and simulation results reveal that compared with exist schemes, the proposed scheme has a good performance in mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER).

The concept of trust in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is usually utilized to assess the trustworthiness of the received data as well as that of the sending entities. The quality of safety applications in VANETs largely depends on the trustworthiness of exchanged data. In this paper, we propose a self-organized distributed trust computing framework (DTCF) for VANETs to compute the trustworthiness of each vehicle, in order to filter out malicious nodes and recognize fully trusted nodes. The proposed framework is solely based on the investigation of the direct experience among vehicles without using any recommendation system. A tier-based dissemination technique for data messages is used to filter out non authentic messages and corresponding events before even going farther away from the source of the event. Extensive simulations are conducted using Omnet++/Sumo in order to investigate the efficiency of our framework and the consistency of the computed trust metrics in both urban and highway environments. Despite the high dynamics in such networks, our proposed DTCF is capable of detecting more than 85% of fully trusted vehicles, and filtering out virtually all malicious entities. The resulting average delay to detect malicious vehicles and fraudulent data is showed to be less than 1 second, and the computed trust metrics are shown to be highly consistent throughout the network.

Divisive hierarchical clustering algorithms iterate the process of decomposition and clustering data recursively. In each recursive call, data in each cluster are arbitrarily selected and thus, the total clustering time can be increased, which causes a problem that it is difficult to apply the process of clustering neighbor vehicular position data in vehicular localization. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic algorithm for speeding up the clustering time by eliminating randomness of the selected data in the process of generating the initial divisive clusters.
This paper proposes an efficient interference control scheme for vehicular moving networks. The features of the proposed scheme are as follows: radio resources are separated into two resource groups to avoid interference between the cellular and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links; V2V links are able to share the same radio resources for an improvement in the resource efficiency; and vehicles can adaptively adjust their transmission power according to the interference among the V2V links (based on the distributed power control (DPC) scheme derived using the network utility maximization method). The DPC scheme, which is the main feature of the proposed scheme, can improve both the reliability and data rate of a V2V link. Simulation results show that the DPC scheme improves the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of V2V links by more than 4 dB, and the sum data rate of the V2V links by 15% and 137% compared with conventional schemes.

In a Vehicular Cloud (VC) network, an announcement protocol plays a critical role in promoting safety and efficiency by enabling vehicles to disseminate safety-related messages. The reliability of message exchange is essential for improving traffic safety and road conditions. However, verifying the message authenticity could lead to the potential compromise of vehicle privacy, presenting a significant security challenge in the VC network. In contrast, if any misbehavior occurs, the accountable vehicle must be identifiable and removed from the network to ensure public safety. Addressing this conflict between message reliability and privacy requires a secure protocol that satisfies accountability properties while preserving user privacy. This paper presents a novel announcement protocol for secure communication in VC networks that utilizes group signature to achieve seemingly contradictory goals of reliability, privacy, and accountability. We have developed the first comprehensive announcement protocol for VC using group signature, which has been shown to improve the performance efficiency and feasibility of the VC network through performance analysis and simulation results.
Due to increasing demand for improving road safety and optimizing road traffic, Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANET) have been subject to extensive attentions from all aspects of commercial industry and academic community. Security and user privacy are fundamental issues for all possible promising applications in VANET. Most of the existing security proposals for secure VANET concentrate authentication with privacy preservation in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside infrastructure (V2I) communications and require huge storage and network capacity for management of revocation list. Motivated by the fact, we propose a new scheme with security and privacy preservation which combines V2V and V2I communication. With our proposed scheme, the communication and computational delay for authentication and overhead for management of revocation list can be significantly reduced due to mutual authentication between a vehicle and a Roadside Unit (RSU) requires only two messages, and the RSU issues the anonymous certificate for the vehicle on behalf of the Trust Authority (TA). We demonstrate that the proposed protocol cannot only guarantee the requirements of security and privacy but can also provide efficiency of authentication and management of revocation list.

V2I(Vehicular to Infrastructure) is a one kind of communication systems which is used between the base stations and mobile objects. In V2I communication system, it is difficult to obtain the desired communication performance. Beamforming technology is to find the optimal path. and it can be improved the communication performance. MUSIC algorithm can be estimated the direction of arrival. The directional vector of received signals and the eigenvector has orthogonal property. MUSIC algorithm uses this property. In V2I communication environment, real time optimal path is changed. By the high computational complexity of the MUSIC algorithm, the optimal path estimation error is generated. In this paper, we propose a method of computation reduction algorithm for MUSIC algorithm.

Vehicular safety service reduces traffic accidents and traffic congestion by informing drivers in advance of threats that may occur while driving using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications in a wireless environment. For vehicle safety services, every vehicle must broadcasts a Basic Safety Message(BSM) periodically. In congested traffic areas, however, network congestion can easily happen, reduce the message delivery ratio, increase end-to-end delay and destabilize vehicular safety service system. In this paper, to solve the network congestion problem in vehicle safety communications, we approximate the relationship between channel busy ratio and the number of vehicles and use it to estimate the total network congestion. We propose a new context-aware transmit power control algorithm which controls the transmission power based on total network congestion. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using Qualnet, a network simulator. As a result, the estimation of total network congestion is accurately approximated except in specific scenarios, and the packet error rate in vehicle safety communication is reduced through transmit power control.
Over the last couple of years, traditional VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc NETwork) evolved into VANET-based clouds. From the VANET standpoint, applications became richer by virtue of the boom in automotive telematics and infotainment technologies. Nevertheless, the research community and industries are concerned about the under-utilization of rich computation, communication, and storage resources in middle and high-end vehicles. This phenomenon became the driving force for the birth of VANET-based clouds. In this paper, we envision a novel application layer of VANET-based clouds based on the cooperation of the moving cars on the road, called CaaS (Cooperation as a Service). CaaS is divided into TIaaS (Traffic Information as a Service), WaaS (Warning as a Service), and IfaaS (Infotainment as a Service). Note, however, that this work focuses only on TIaaS and WaaS. TIaaS provides vehicular nodes, more precisely subscribers, with the fine-grained traffic information constructed by CDM (Cloud Decision Module) as a result of the cooperation of the vehicles on the roads in the form of mobility vectors. On the other hand, WaaS provides subscribers with potential warning messages in case of hazard situations on the road. Communication between the cloud infrastructure and the vehicles is done through GTs (Gateway Terminals), whereas GTs are physically realized through RSUs (Road-Side Units) and vehicles with 4G Internet access. These GTs forward the coarse-grained cooperation from vehicles to cloud and fine-grained traffic information and warnings from cloud to vehicles (subscribers) in a secure, privacy-aware fashion. In our proposed scheme, privacy is conditionally preserved wherein the location and the identity of the cooperators are preserved by leveraging the modified location-based encryption and, in case of any dispute, the node is subject to revocation. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed scheme is the first effort to offshore the extended traffic view construction function and warning messages dissemination function to the cloud.
