RBFNNs-based Recognition System of Vehicle License Plate Using Distortion Correction and Local Binarization (왜곡 보정과 지역 이진화를 이용한 RBFNNs 기반 차량 번호판 인식 시스템)

  • In this paper, we propose vehicle license plate recognition system based on Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNNs) with the use of local binarization functions and canny edge algorithm. In order to detect the area of license plate and also recognize license plate numbers, binary images are generated by using local binarization methods, which consider local brightness, and canny edge detection. The generated binary images provide information related to the size and the position of license plate. Additionally, image warping is used to compensate the distortion of images obtained from the side. After extracting license plate numbers, the dimensionality of number images is reduced through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and is used as input variables to RBFNNs. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to optimize a number of essential parameters needed to improve the accuracy of RBFNNs. Those optimized parameters include the number of clusters and the fuzzification coefficient used in the FCM algorithm, and the orders of polynomial of networks. Image data sets are obtained by changing the distance between stationary vehicle and camera and then used to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

Measuring Particle Number from Light-duty Diesel Vehicles in WLTP Driving Cycle (WLTP 주행모드에서의 경유차 입자상물질 개수 배출 특성)

  • Worldwide harmonized light-duty vehicle test procedure (WLTP) for emission certification has been developed in WP.29 forum in UN ECE since 2007. The test procedure is expected to be applied to Korean light-duty diesel vehicles at the same time of adoption in Europe. The air pollutant emissions from light-duty vehicles have been regulated with weight per distance travelled which means the driving cycles can affect the results. The six Euro-5 light-duty diesel vehicles including sedan, SUV and truck have been tested with WLTP, NEDC which is used for emission certification for light-duty diesel vehicles, and CVS-75 to estimate how much particle number emission can be affected by different driving cycles. The averaged particle number emissions have not shown statistically meaningful difference. The maximum particle number emission have been found in Low speed phase of WLTP which is mainly caused by cooled engine conditions. The amount of particle number emission in cooled engine condition is much different as test vehicles. It means different technical solution is required in this aspect to cope with WLTP driving cycle.

  • This paper presents the design and simulation of a laser power beaming (LPB) system for an electric vehicle that establishes an optimal power transmission path based on the received signal strength. The LPB system is possible to transfer power from multiple transmitters to a single receiver according to the characteristics of the laser and the solar panel. When the laser beams of multiple transmitters aim at a solar panel at the same time, the received power is the sum of all energy at a solar panel. Our proposed LPB system consists of multiple transmitters and multiple receivers. The transmitter sends its power characteristics as optically coded pulses with a class 1 laser beam and powers as a high-intensity laser beam. By using the attenuated power level, the receiver can estimate the maximum receivable powers from the transmitters and select optimal transmitters. Throughout the simulation, we verified the possibility that different LPB receivers were achieved their required power by the optimal allocation of the transmitter among the various transmitters.

  • Autonomous driving is no longer atechnology of the future since the development of autonomous vehicles has now been realized, and many technologies have already been developed for the convenience of drivers. For example, autonomous vehicles are one of the most important drive assistant systems. Among these many drive assistant systems, Cruise Control Systems are now a typical technology. This system constantly maintains a vehicle's speed and distance from a vehicle in front by using Radar or LiDAR sensors in real time. Cruise Control Systems do not only serve their original role, but also fulfill another role as a 'Driving Safety' measure as they can detect a situation that a driver did not predict and can intervene by assuming a vehicle's longitude control. However, these systems have the limitation of only focusing on driver safety. Therefore, in this paper, an Intelligent Cruise Control System that utilizes the path planning method and GIS is proposed to overcome some existing limitations.

  • In order to solve the problem of traffic holdups and environmental pollution(contamination), several metropolises are operating the subway and many local government plans hereafter the light rail vehicle operation and it is in the process of preparing. This point of time, it need to evaluate the comfortable characteristic of the seat which is closely connected with passenger and it should be reflected to the product design through the data analysis. The methods of the comfortable characteristic evaluation should be considered to various methods from physical factor to psychological factor. Among these, the most universal and possible quantitative measurement estimate through 'Body pressure measurement system'. From this paper, it was measured the body pressure of the subway seat which is in the process of operating in a domestic and it will be compared and analyzed the material & seat shape, so we evaluated the comfortable characteristic of the short-distance transportation railway vehicle. It was operated the man and woman who belongs in standard shape of Korean, we compared and analyzed the Peak position where the body pressure is visible and body pressure spread out.

Using habitat suitability model for the wild boar (Sus scrofa Linnaeus) to select wildlife passage sites in extensively disturbed temperate forests

  • The occurrence of wild boars (Sus scrofa Linnaeus) and reports of wildlife-vehicle conflicts (i.e., road-kill) involving them have increased in natural forest regions of Korea. In the past few decades, many wildlife passages have been constructed to reduce vehicle collisions involving wildlife species. However, few studies have assessed the habitat suitability of target wildlife species when locating the construction sites of wildlife passages. Target species rarely use wildlife passages if built in an inappropriate location. Therefore, a quantitative habitat model is required to find suitable sites for wildlife passages that can connect the fragmented forest patches of wildlife habitats in Korea. In this study, the wild boar was selected as the target species, and six environmental variables (percentage of Quercus forest, slope aspect, distance to roads, water accessibility, forest stand age and density) were measured. The habitat model for wild boars was developed with a Delphi survey, and habitat suitability maps were delineated for the provinces of Gangwon-do and Jeollanam-do. In this study, 298 and 64 boars were observed in Gangwon-do and Jeollanam-do, respectively. Observations of wild boars derived from the second nationwide natural environmental survey were used to evaluate the habitat model. Habitat suitability maps that superimposed existing road networks suggested that wild boar habitats were severely fragmented in both provinces, particularly in Gangwon-do. To connect the fragmented habitats and prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions, this study proposes 11 and 5 wildlife passage sites in Gangwon-do and Jeollanam-do, respectively.

  • The use of fossil is causing enviromental all over the world. So hydrogen energy is attracting attention as one of the alternative. The government announced that 30% of the air pollution is because of the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle. In addition, they plans to reduce Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles by 2030 and increase (electric vehicles, EV) or (fuel cell vehicle, FCV). The FCV is evaluated as a next-generation green car because it has a long driving distance and short charging time. However, the hydrogen industry is not able to expand due to the lack of refueling infrastrucutre. This paper predicts the site of hydrogen refueling stations for the expansion of the hydrogen industry and proposes a method to supply hydrogen multi energy filling stations.

Adaptive Observer Based Longitudinal Control of Vehicles

  • In this paper, an observer-based adaptive controller is proposed to control the longitudinal motion of vehicles. The standard gradient method will be used to estimate the vehicle parameters such as mass, time constant, etc. The nonlinear model between the driving force and the vehicle acceleration will be chosen to design the state observer for the vehicle velocity and acceleration. It will be shown that the proposed observer is exponentially stable, and that the adaptive controller proposed in this paper is stable by the Lyapunov function candidate. It will be proved that the errors of the relative distance, velocity and acceleration converge to zero asymptotically fast, and that the overall system is also asymptotically stable. The simulation results are presented to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A study on the characteristics of wide bandwidth connector for automotive communication (자동차 통신을 위한 광대역 커넥터 특성 연구)

  • In this paper, helical wave wire have been proposed as the vehicle connector for the wireless access in vehicular environments(5.925GHz) communication. This helical slow wave connector is design by considering the properties of critical parameter like helical mean radius, helical pitch, helical wire radius and distance of helical wire to shield. The design simulation and results can be used to determine the most suitable helical wave wire dimensions for vehicle communication connector. The optimized WAVE connector inserted the helical wave wire has insertion loss less than -0.76dB at 5.925GHz. It provides 31% of insertion loss with good performance. Therefore, the simulated results can be effectively used for optimum design of high frequency connector for vehicle communication.

The Characteristics of Secondary Crashes Occurred on Expressways in Korea (고속도로에서 발생한 2차 교통사고의 특성분석)

  • PURPOSES : This study aims to draw differences between primary and secondary crashes by comparing crash characteristics and to identify the unique characteristics of secondary crashes for making better effective countermeasures to reduce secondary crashes. METHODS : The characteristics of secondary crashes were compared to those of primary crashes through a two sample proportional test (z-test). RESULTS : The results showed that vehicle-to-vehicle crashes and vehicle-to-person crashes are dominant crash types in secondary crashes. Compared to primary crashes, secondary crashes were likely to occur during nighttime. With respect to season and weather, the proportion of secondary crashes occurred during winter and in snowy weather is relatively higher than that of primary crashes. The main causes of primary crashes were found to be drowsiness, speeding, and exaggerated steering control, whereas main factors affecting the occurrence of secondary crashes were negligence of keeping eyes forward and no keeping a safe distance as expected. CONCLUSIONS : The characteristics affecting the occurrence of secondary crashes are different from those of primary crashes, indicating that proper countermeasures should be established to prevent the occurrence of secondary crashes on highways.
