  • In this paper, we describe an outdoor augmented reality system using GPS tracking for position and attitude information. The system consist of a remote mobile operation unit and a ground operation unit. The remote mobile operation unit includes a real-time image acquiring device, a GPS tracking device, and a wireless data transceiver; the ground operation unit includes a wireless transceiver, a virtual image generating device, and an image superimposing device. The GPS tracking device for measurement of position and attitude of the remote mobile operation unit was designed by TANS Vector and RT-20 for DGPS. The wireless data transceiver was for data transmission between the remote mobile operation unit and the ground operation unit. After the remote mobile operation unit was installed on a vehicle and a helicopter, the system was evaluated to verify its validity in actual applications. It was found that the implemented system could be used for obtaining real-time remote information such as construction simulation, tour guide, broadcasting, disaster observation, or military purpose.

  • Congestion index is needed for quantifying congestion level for various areas. So far, the index has been calculated based on multiple vehicle data for specified time interval. Such being the case, it was costly to build it and the usage of it was focused on policy development and evaluation rather than on traffic information provision. This study focuses on a development on a single vehicle based congestion index which can be a representative value for link congestion level and link speed information at the same time for dual purposes of traditional usages and information provision. A new term has been added for representing real time based arterial congestion level and it has been verified on a real time basis. The index was based on single vehicle GPS data and seemed to be cost effective in deriving the index. With the help of the index, the traffic information contents can be diversified in a constructive way in providing real time traffic information for ITS area and in using congestion level determination for traditional transportation areas.

  • Recently an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been widely used for military and civil applications. The role of a navigation system in the UAV is to provide navigation data to the flight control computer (FCC) for guidance and control. Since performance of the FCC is highly reliant on the navigation data, a fault in the navigation system may lead to a disastrous failure of the whole UAV. Therefore, the navigation system should possess a fault detection and isolation (FDI) algorithm. This paper proposes an attitude determination GPS/INS integrated navigation system with an FDI algorithm for a UAV. Hardware for the proposed navigation system has been developed. The developed hardware comprises a commercial inertial measurement unit (IMU) and the integrated navigation package (INP) which includes an attitude determination GPS (ADGPS) receiver and a navigation computer unit (NCU). The navigation algorithm was implemented in a real-time operating system with a multi-tasking structure. To evaluate performance of the proposed navigation system, a flight test has been performed using a small aircraft. The test results show that the proposed navigation system can give accurate navigation results even in a high dynamic environment.

  • Commercial uses of GPS have been growing rapidly with applications for aircraft, ship, and land vehicle navigation as well as for surveying and time keeping. The next generation GPS and Japanese QZS (Quasi Zenith Satellite) will provide three different civil signals. Galileo will also provide several types of civil signals. The availability of the third civil frequency has obvious advantages to instantaneous carrier phase accuracy and ambiguity resolution for centimeter level measurements. This paper discusses the effects of additional new civil signals for the high accuracy positioning in urban areas based on simulation using practical raw data. As for constellation, only GPS and GPS+QZS are considered. For positioning, a short distance baseline is assumed in order to disregard atmosphere effects. In this simulation, mask angle and signal conditions were fixed and ambiguity success rates were compared between different triple frequency combination scenarios. The coefficient of reflection was set randomly from 0.05 to 0.5 and the multipath delay was also set randomly from 5-100 m. Visible satellites and signal strength were determined by raw data collected in Tokyo by car. These simulation results have confirmed that the availability of high accuracy positioning will increase in all scenarios if we use GPS+QZS with triple frequencies.

  • Satellite-based positioning system such as global positioning system(GPS) has played a major role in data capture technology for constructing GIS database. Recent advances in satellite-based positioning technology have made the task of precisely locating features fast, easy, and inexpensive, and determined their current latitude and longitude. However, there are still situations where satellite-based positioning service will not provide users with desired precision such as in urban environments, that is, the only severe handicap still hampering satellite-based positioning is the well-known problem of restricted satellite visibilities. As the majority of the creation and updating of road and street network are carried out in urban environments, the obstruction problem considerably impedes the wider application of satellite-based positioning. This paper presents the current GPS-based positioning environment for GIS data acquisition in urban areas. A field experiment with measurement vehicle has been performed under varying operational conditions and areas where shading of satellite signal is encountered due to buildings and overpasses with measurement vehicle in order to evaluate the availability of existing GPS-based positioning. We found that the current GPS-base positioning system we used in this study was insufficient for a precise GIS data acquisition. This research would make a contribution for the development of base data to supplementary technology, which can complement the existing GPS-based positioning.

  • A fast and practical method is proposed to resolve the half cycle ambiguity by comparing data sequences from multiple antennas. The method uses the fact that demodulated data sequences from multiple antennas are identical for the same SV (Satellite Vehicle). The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using an attitude determination system. the test results show that the half cycle ambiguity can be resolved within a few bit periods after carrier lock and a seamless attitude is obtained.

  • This paper deals with quantitative analysis about the characteristics of GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) signals contaminated with multipath signals and day-to-day repeatability of the navigation solution and SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) caused by multipath signals using the collected data from GPS receiver installed on KSLV-I which was on standby on the launch pad at Naro Space Center. Since the GPS antennas, surrounding environments and GPS satellite orbits were very slightly changed with respect to the day, the repeating pattern of the solution and SNR caused by the multipath signals was verified from the collected data. Analytic result of the multipath effects and day-to-day repeatability of the navigation solution and SNR observed at the launch pad would be used for obtaining more stable performance of the GPS receiver when the satellite launch vehicles are on standby.

  • The purpose of this paper is to design and implement the user motion pattern control system for the simulated vehicle. After analyzing the user motion patterns in the system, the patterns are used to control the moving direction of the simulated vehicle such as forward, backward, turn right, turn left etc. The patterns in the system around are sent to the simulated vehicle in real time. In order to execute the suggested user motion pattern control system, the Kinect is used for executing the system. The Kinect recognizes the specified user motion patterns and it transmits the data to the user motion pattern control system. There are nine kinds of the user motion patterns in the system for controlling the simulated vehicle. In addition to this, some sensors are used to detect the condition of the simulated vehicle. GPS is also used to estimate the current location of the simulated vehicle and to obtain the driving information.
