  • In a classical clustering problem, grouping is done on the basis of similarities or distances (dissimilarities) among the elements. Therefore, the objective is to minimize the variance within each group while maximizing the between-group variance among all groups. In this paper, however, a new class of clustering problem is introduced. We call this a laydown grouping problem (LGP). In LGP, the objective is to minimize both the within-group and between-group variances. Furthermore, the problem is expanded to a multi-dimensional case where the two-way minimization process must be considered for each dimension simultaneously for all measurement characteristics. At first, the problem is assessed by analyzing its variance structures and their complexities by conjecturing that LGP is NP-complete. Then, the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is applied and the results are compared against that from others.

  • For applications that are grid enabled, the grid can offer a resource balancing effect by scheduling grid jobs on machines with low utilization. When jobs communicate with each other, the internet, or with storage resources, an advanced scheduler could schedule them to minimize communications traffic or minimize the distance of the communications. We propose an intelligent load distribution algorithm to minimize communications traffic and distance of the communications using genetic algorithm. The experiments show the proposed load redistribution algorithm performs efficiently in the variance of load in grid environments.

  • This paper is concerned with the optimal replacement policy of auto-scale with increasing error-variance. This optimization model is to minimize the sum of the cost of defective and excess weight allowance for a target value. The numerical example for the proposed problem is solved by Golden-Section Search and Simpsons's rule.

  • In this paper a state reconstruction filter for linear discrete-time stochastic systems with unknown inputs and noises is presented. The suggested filter can estimate the system state vector and the unknown inputs simultaneously As an extension of the filter a fault diagnosis filter for linear discrete-time stochastic systems with unknown inputs and noises is presented for each filters the optimal gain determination methods which minimize the variance of the state reconstruction errorare presented. Finally the usability of the filtersis shown via numerical examples.

  • EPC seeks to minimize variability by transferring the output variable to a related process input(controllable) variable, while SPC seeks to reduce variability by detecting and eliminating assignable causes of variation. In the case of product control, a very reasonable objective is to try to minimize the variance of the output deviations from the target or set point. We compare three control systems; EPC, combined system with EWMA and EPC, and SPC. This paper shows through simulation that the performance of the integrated model of EPC and SPC is more preferable than that of EPC.

  • This paper deals with a defect classification technique that considers the structural characteristics of a refrigerant compressor. First, the pressure pulsation of the refrigerant flowing in the suction pipe of a normal compressor was measured at the same time as the acceleration of the shell surface, and then the transfer function between the two signals was estimated. Next, the frequency-weighted acceleration signals of the defect classification target compressors were generated using the estimated transfer function. The estimation of the variance of the transfer function is presented to formulate the frequency-weighted acceleration signals. The estimated frequency-weighted accelerations were applied to defect classification using frequency-domain features. Experiments were performed using commercial compressors to verify the technique. The results confirmed that it is possible to perform an effective defect classification of the refrigerant compressor by the shell surface acceleration of the compressor. The proposed method could make it possible to improve the total inspection performance for compressors in a mass-production line.

  • In this paper, the inferences of data obtained from periodic inspection and type I censoring for the step-stress accelerated life test are studied. The exponential distribution with a failure rate function that a log-linear function of stress and the tampered failure rate model are considered. The maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters are estimated and also the optimal stress change time which minimize the asymptotic variance of maximum likelihood estimators of parameters is determined. A numerical example will be given to illustrate the proposed inferential procedures and the sensitivity of the asymptotic variance of the estimated mean by the guessed parameters is investigated.

  • The 3-way balanced multi-level rotation design has been discussed (Park Kim and Kim, 2003), where the 3-way balancing is done on interview time, in monthly sample and rotation group and recall time. A greater advantage of 3-way balanced design is accomplished by an estimator. To obtain the advantage, we generalized previous generalized composite estimator (GCE). We call this as l-step GCE. The variance of the l-step GCE's of various characteristics of interest are presented. Also, we provide the coefficients which minimize the variance of the l-step GCE. Minimizing a weighted sum of variances of all concerned estimators of interest, we drive one set of the compromise coefficient of l-step GCE's to preserve additivity of estimates.

  • Today, as the power trades between generation companies and power customer are liberalized, the uncertainty level of operated power system is rapidly increased. Therefore, transmission operators as decision makers for transmission expansion are required to establish a deliberate investment plan for effective operations of transmission facilities considering forecasted conditions of power system. This paper proposes the methodology for the optimal solution of transmission expansion in deregulated power system. The paper obtains the expected value of transmission congestion cost for various scenarios by using occurrence probability. In addition, the paper assumes that increasing rates of loads are the probability distribution and indicates the location of expanded transmission line, the time for transmission expansion with the minimum cost for the future by performing the Montecarlo simulation. To minimize the investment risk as the variance of the congestion cost, Mean-Variance Markowitz portfolio theory is applied to the optimization model by the penalty factor of the variance. By the case study, the optimal solution for transmission expansion plan considering the feature of market participants is obtained.
