  • This paper considers a problem of classification of variable stars based on functional data analysis. For a better understanding of galaxy structure and stellar evolution, various approaches for classification of variable stars have been studied. Several features that explain the characteristics of variable stars (such as color index, amplitude, period, and Fourier coefficients) were usually used to classify variable stars. Excluding other factors but focusing only on the curve shapes of variable stars, Deb and Singh (2009) proposed a classification procedure using multivariate principal component analysis. However, this approach is limited to accommodate some features of the light curve data that are unequally spaced in the phase domain and have some functional properties. In this paper, we propose a light curve estimation method that is suitable for functional data analysis, and provide a classification procedure for variable stars that combined the features of a light curve with existing functional data analysis methods. To evaluate its practical applicability, we apply the proposed classification procedure to the data sets of variable stars from the project STellar Astrophysics and Research on Exoplanets (STARE).

  • The burst is to require abruptly high transmission rate in case of transmitting pre-stored variable bit rate video data, and it causes to be inefficient use of network resource, resource reservation. To avoid these problems, smoothing is transmission plan where variable rate video data is converted to a constant bit rate stream. These smoothing algorithms include CBA, MCBA, MVBA and others. To evaluate amount of burst reduction in the existing CBA, MCBA, MVBA algorithm, this paper compares the burst-related-factors of transmission plan in smoothing algorithms with original video sources which were stored Variable Bit Rate. There are maximum frame bytes, maximum GOP bytes, transmission rate variability per frame, transmission rate variability per GOP in burst-related evaluation factors. Experimental result shows burst-related factors of smoothing algorithms which were used for experiment lower than that of pre-stored video data, except special case.

  • This study is to develop a viable measurement tool of crowdedness in restaurants. First, to measure customer’s awareness of crowdedness related to each different environmental factor in a restaurant, 49 factors of crowdedness awareness were selected based on the previous studies and then properties of each factor affecting customer’s satisfaction for crowdedness were analyzed. To analyze effects of each factor upon the satisfaction rate, a Multiple Regression Analysis was conducted with the crowdedness awareness as an independent variable and satisfaction of crowdedness as a dependent variable. The results showed that when an analysis of the environmental factors in the crowdedness awareness was conducted in an effort to develop a measurement tool of crowdedness awareness in restaurants, that would be fit for the domestic food service market, based upon 49 factors of restaurant environment. Focusing on expectation and satisfaction rate, it was found that rating the satisfaction level would be a much more effective tool to measure crowdedness awareness because satisfaction rate appeared to be more closely related to the awareness than the results obtained from the Multiple Regression Analysis with a difference between expectation and satisfaction scores as an independent variable.

  • Scholars and researcher have carried out many studies attempting to measure the user satisfaction as the performance variable of information system. However, the theoretical investigation has not been clearly conducted due to the differences in concepts, variables, and methods in measurement. Thus, it is important to examine the causes of differences and to suggest to conceptual model. First, an extensive review of the previous studies is presented to identify the concepts, methods, and the limitations. Second, the implications of the literature review are discussed. Third, based on the implications, the conceptual model of evaluation of information system composed of the factors influencing user satisfaction is suggested. This model analyzes the explicit interrelationship between the influencing factors (independent variable) and the measuring factors (dependent variable). The model also assesses the correlation and the relative importance among the independent variables.
