  • This paper presents a framework for observable behavior that can be used as a basis for user modeling, and it reports the results of a pair of user studies that examine the joint utility of two specific behaviors. User models can be constructed by hand, or they can be teamed automatically based on feedback provided by the user about the relevance of documents that they have examined. By observing user behavior, it is possible to obtain implicit feedback without requiring explicit relevance judgments. Four broad categories of potentially observable behavior are identified : examine, retain, reference, and annotate, and examples of specific behaviors within a category are further subdivided based on the natural scope of information objects being manipulated . segment object, or class. Previous studies using Internet discussion groups (USENET news) have shown reading time to be a useful source of implicit feedback for predicting a user's preferences. The experiments reported in this paper extend that work to academic and professional journal articles and abstracts, and explore the relationship between printing behavior and reading time. Two user studies were conducted in which undergraduate students examined articles or abstracts from the telecommunications or pharmaceutical literature. The results showed that reading time can be used to predict the user's assessment of relevance, that the mean reading time for journal articles and technical abstracts is longer than has been reported for USENET news documents, and that printing events provide additional useful evidence about relevance beyond that which can be inferred from reading time. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the implications of the reported results.

  • In the modern rapid growing web era, the scope of web publication is about accessing the web resources. Due to the increased size of web, the search engines face many challenges, in indexing the web pages as well as producing result to the user query. Methodologies discussed in literatures towards clustering web documents suffer in producing higher clustering accuracy. Problem is mitigated using, the proposed scheme, Semantic Conceptual Relational Similarity (SCRS) based clustering algorithm which, considers the relationship of any document in two ways, to measure the similarity. One is with the number of semantic relations of any document class covered by the input document and the second is the number of conceptual relation the input document covers towards any document class. With a given data set Ds, the method estimates the SCRS measure for each document Di towards available class of documents. As a result, a class with maximum SCRS is identified and the document is indexed on the selected class. The SCRS measure is measured according to the semantic relevancy of input document towards each document of any class. Similarly, the input query has been measured for Query Relational Semantic Score (QRSS) towards each class of documents. Based on the value of QRSS measure, the document class is identified, retrieved and ranked based on the QRSS measure to produce final population. In both the way, the semantic measures are estimated based on the concepts available in semantic ontology. The proposed method had risen efficient result in indexing as well as search efficiency also has been improved.

  • This paper proposes an efficient location management scheme for next-generation cellular mobile networks. In the proposed scheme, the users are classified into two classes according to their mobility patterns; high mobility users (HMU) and low mobility users (LMU). We design the intelligent location management strategy based on theme user mobility classes. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with that of pure intelligent paging scheme by computer simulation. As a result, it is shown that the proposed scheme provides the better performance than the pure intelligent paging scheme.

  • This paper discusses a graphic user interface(GUI) for the concealed target segmentation. The human subject hiding a metal gun is captured by the passive millimeter wave(MMW) imaging system. The imaging system operates on the regime of 8 mm wavelength. The MMW image is analyzed by the multi-level segmentation to segment and identify a concealed weapon under clothing. The histogram of the passive MMW image is modeled with the Gaussian mixture distribution. LBG vector quantization(VQ) and expectation and maximization(EM) algorithms are sequentially applied to segment the body and the object area. In the experiment, the GUI is implemented by the MFC(Microsoft Foundation Class) and the OpenCV(Computer Vision) libraries and tested in real-time showing the efficiency of the system.

  • This paper is the study on the Medium Designator in Non-book materials. Main contents of this study were as follows; 1. The medium designator serves to indicate the class of material to which an item belongs. This is used to give an 'early warning' ;to the catalogue user. 2. This medium designator may be further divided into two elements ; a general material designation (GMD), for example video-recording, and a specific material designation (SMD), for example, videodisc. 3. GMD: In cataloging, a term indicating the broad class of material to which a bibliographic item belongs, such as 'motion picture', and SMD : In descriptive cataloging, a term indicating the special class of material (usually the class of physical object) to which a biblographic item belongs, such as videocassette. 4. Locating the medium designator after the title proper was not prescribed until ISBD(G) and AACR2. In pre-ISBD(G) codes, the ,early, warning type of medium designator was placed after all title information. But in AACR2, the medium designator is placed after the title proper, but before parellel title and other title information. 5. In Terminology, Two separate lists of designations are given in AACR2, l.1C1, one for British and one for North American use. The British list contains fewer terms, and uses generic categories to group together some of the North American list. 6. The problem of where to place the medium designator might be circumvented by using some kind of early alerting device other than a formal element of biblliographic description. Various alternatives have been suggested. A more popular device is the provision of symbols or 'media code' which are part of the call number and indicate the porticular medium type. 'Colour-coding' the use of used by some libraries but is now longly discouraged. 7. According to Frost. The medium designatorhas been generally reeognized as serving three functions; 1) as a statement of the nature or basic format of the item cataloged and thus as a meant of informing the user as to the type of material at hand; 2) as a description of the physical charaetistics of medium and as a means of alerting the user to equipment needed to make use of the item. 3) as a device to distinguish different physical formats which share the same title. 8. AACR2 raises some problems which decision makers have neet had to face preriously It provides a GMD for every item in the collection including books and it makes the application of any or all GMD's optional.

  • To support the mobility, mobile computers are generally equipped with lower capability than desktop PCs or workstations in terms of the size of a display, the processing power of CPU and so on. This may give a rise to limitation in mobile computers of supporting multimedia services such as World Wide Web which users would otherwise fully enjoy in desktop PCs. Approaches to reducing the limitations are distillating original multimedia data or converting them to text. Conventional proxy servers for mobile computer simply send distillated image files with the fixed size regardless of the display size of a target mobile computer. Since the cached data is kept separately for each user, they cannot be shared among users with the same display configuration and thus the proxy server could be overloaded. In this paper, we first classify various mobile computers based on their display capability in terms of display sizes and colors. We propose an enhanced proxy server called Class-based proxy that provides a mobile computer with distillated image files in proportion to its class display capacity. The proposed proxy server allows a mobile computer user to have a homepage view similar to that in PC or Workstation. Mobile computers with the same class share the cached image files, which are distillated appropriately for that class. This helps the proxy server to get higher cache hit ratio with improved efficiency and scalability.

  • Facing limited network resources such as bandwidth and processing capability, the Internet will have congestion from time to time. In this paper, we propose a scheme to maximize the total utility offered by the network to the end user during congested times. We believe the only way to achieve our goal is to make the scheme application-aware, that is, to take advantage of the characteristics of the application. To make our scheme scalable, it is designed to be class-based. Traffic from applications with similar characteristics is classified into the same class. We adopted the RED queue management mechanism to adaptively control the traffic belonging to the same class. To achieve the optimal utility, the traffic belonging to different classes should be controlled differently. By adjusting link bandwidth assignments of different classes, the scheme can achieve the goal and adapt to the changes of dynamical incoming traffic. We use the control theoretical approach to analyze our scheme. In this paper, we focus on optimizing the control on two types of traffic flows: TCP and Simple UDP (SUDP, modeling audio or video applications based on UDP). We derive the differential equations to model the dynamics of SUDP traffic flows and drive stability conditions for the system with both SUDP and TCP traffic flows. In our study, we also find analytical results on the TCP traffic stable point are not accurate, so we derived new formulas on the TCP traffic stable point. We verified the proposed scheme with extensive NS2 simulations.

  • This paper describes an implementation of the document class editor based on ODA(Open Document Architecture). For processing, we divided document structure into generic logical structure and generic layout structure as ODA standard. Also this editor could edit document profile. Using the utility which was implemented to investigate the composed document by object. we confirmed the document. And we could verify the ODIF stream data of the document. We designed this editor based on DAP level 2 of international functional standard. This system was implemented in environment of the X window system and the Motif as graphical user interface. This document class editor will be used to create real document having specific document structure.
