Appropriate removal of pollutants from combined sewer overflows(CSOs) and stormwater runoff is of primary concern to watershed managers trying to meet water quality standards even under a wet weather condition. Harmful substances associated with particles besides TSS and BOD are subjected to removal prior to discharge into the natural waters. Effectiveness of five major hydrodynamic separation technologies, Vortechs, Downstream Defender including Storm King for CSOs control, CDS, Stormceptor, and IHS, were evaluated in this study. There is not sufficient information for accurate evaluation of the removal efficiency for the pollutants from the stormwater runoff and CSOs. Based upon limited engineering data, however, all technologies were found to be effective in separation of heavy particles and floating solids. Technologies utilizing screens seem to have advantage in the treatment capacity than the other technologies relied fully on hydrodynamic behavior. The IHS system seems to have a strong potential in application for control of CSOs because of unique hydrodynamic behavior as well as a flexibility in opening size of the screens. Size of the particulate matter in the CSOs and stormwater runoff is found to be the most important parameter in selection of the type of the hydrodynamic separators. There exists an upper limit in the solids removal efficiency of a hydrodynamic separator, which is strongly dependent upon the particle size distribution of the CSOs and stormwater runoff.

Globally, due to climate change and urbanization, problems with water cycle destruction in urban areas frequently occur. In order to solve this problem, LID technique is being actively conducted the application in urban and research. In this study, some areas of the new city located in Busan was constructed using a widely used SWMM model to verify the effectiveness of the LID technique. This is to present a plan to maximize the efficiency of urban water cycle of the stormwater management target figure and the LID scale calculation method. In addition, the efficiency of runoff reduction using stormwater storage basin was analyzed in urban development projects. By calculating the scale of customized LID for each sub basin, the amount of runoff and peak runoff after LID application was reduced by 86.8 % and 69.5 %, respectively. Depending on the application of the stormwater storage basin, the reduction effect of peak runoff from 0.5 m3/s to 4.9 m3/s and delay effect of 8 minutes to 10 minutes was shown.

Stormwater reduction plays an important role in the safety and resilience to flooding in urban areas. Due to rapid climate change, the world is experiencing abnormal climate phenomena, and sudden floods and concentrated torrential rains are frequently occurring in urban basins and the amount of outflow due to stormwater increases. In addition, the damage caused by urban flooding and inundation due to extreme rainfall exceeding the events that occurred in the past increases. To solve this problem, water supply, drainage, and water supply for sustainable urban development, the water management paradigm is shifting from sewage maintenance to water circulation and water-sensitive cities. So, in this study, The purpose of this study is to examine measures to increase the resilience of urban ecosystem systems for urban excellence reduction by analyzing the effects of green infra structures and LID techniques and evaluating changes in resilience. In this study, for simulating and analysis of runoff for various stormwater patterns and LID applications, Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was used.
Apparent changes in the natural hydrologic cycle causing more frequent floods in urban areas and surface water quality impairment have led stormwater management solutions towards the use of green and sustainable practices that aims to replicate pre-urbanization hydrology. Among the widely documented applications are infiltration techniques that temporarily store rainfall runoff while promoting evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge through infiltration, and diffuse pollutant reduction. In this study, a laboratory-scale infiltration device was built to be able to observe and determine the factors affecting flow variations and corresponding solids removal through a series of experiments employing semi-synthetic stormwater runoff. Results reveal that runoff and solids reduction is greatly influenced by the infiltration capability of the underlying soil which is also affected by rainfall intensity and the available depth for water storage. For gravel-filled structures, a depth of at least 1 m and subsoil infiltration rates of not more than 200 mm/h are suggested for optimum volume reduction and pollutant removal. Moreover, it was found that the length of the structure is more critical than the depth for applications in low infiltration soils. These findings provide a contribution to existing guidelines and current understanding in design and applicability of infiltration systems.
As one alternative to alleviate damages caused by stormwater runoff, the effects of runoff quantity reduction are analyzed when porous pavement is used. Porous pavements with various depths, general pavement and an artificial rainfall generator are installed for laboratory experiments. Runoff changes are analyzed according to the various rainfall durations. The rainfall intensity of 150 mm/hr is generated for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, and 120 minutes. For porous pavements with 80 cm thickness, 100%, 93%, 56% of discharge is infiltrated through soil, respectively. For porous pavements with 20 cm thickness, 81%, 32%, 28% of discharge is infiltrated through soil, respectively. It is found that the porous pavements are able to decrease the runoff.

In this study the optimal volume for non-point source control retention is estimated considering spatio-temporal variation of land surface. The 3-parameter mixed exponential probability density function is used to represent the statistical properties of rainfall events, and NRCS-CN method is applied as rainfall-runoff transformation. The catchment drainage area is divided into individual $30m{\times}30m$ cells, and runoff curve number is estimated at each cell. Using the derived probability density function theory, the stormwater probability density function at each cell is derived from the rainfall probability density function and NRCS-CN rainfall-runoff transformation. Considering the antecedent soil moisture condition at each cell and the spatial variation of CN value at the whole catchment drainage area, the ensemble stormwater capture curve is established to estimate the optimal volume for an non-point source control retention. The comparison between spatio-temporally varied land surface and constant land surface is presented as a case study for a urban drainage area.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) involved conservation or rehabilitation of natural ecosystems or the creation of natural processes in modified or artificial ecosystems to mimic natural processes for the improved management of water (UN-Water, 2018). This study investigated the relationship between microbial presence and survival to the pollutant treatment performance of seven different stormwater NBS managing urban stormwater runoff. In this study, seven different stormwater nature-based solution (NBS) was investigated to identify the relationship of microbial community to the pollutant removal performance of stormwater NBS. Based on this study, Proteobacteria was found to be the most dominant microorganism for all stormwater NBS and IS followed by Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria. Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, WS3, and AF234118_p were found to have high positive correlation to most pollutant removal efficiency of different stormwater NBS (r-value: 0.62 to 0.68). Using Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria count in stormwater NBS, equations predicting pollutant removal performance were also developed and may be used in minimizing the cost for stormevent monitoring to identify the pollutant removal performance of stormwater NBS.
This study investigated the chemical properties of Organic Soil Amendments (OSAs) made from organic waste. It also assessed the effectiveness of using these OSAs in the soil layer of Green Infrastructure (GI) to reduce stormwater runoff and non-point source pollutants. The goal was to improve the national environmental value through resource recycling and contribute to the circular economy transformation and carbon neutrality of urban GI. The OSAs used in this study consisted of spent coffee grounds and food waste compost. They were found to be nutrient-rich and stable as artificial soils, indicating their potential use in the soil layer of GI facilities. Applying OSAs to bio-retention cells and permeable pavement resulted in a reduction of approximately 11-17% in stormwater runoff and a decrease of about 16-18% in Total Phosphorus (TP) discharge in the target area. Increasing the proportion of food waste compost in the OSAs had a positive impact on reducing stormwater runoff and pollutant emissions. This study highlights the importance of utilizing recycled resources and can serve as a foundation for future research, such as establishing parameters for assessing the effectiveness of GI facilities through experiments. To enable more accurate analysis, it is recommended to conduct studies that consider both the chemical and biological aspects of substance transfer in OSAs.
This study was investigated to characterize the stormwater runoff pollutant materials from the urban area mixed with industrial area. Almost the similar rainfall pattern is shown during the 5 years, and the yearly precipitation was 5.2~6.6 mm. The first flushing effect during the early-stage rainfall-run off was observed in some events. EMC ranges are 19.3~39.9 mg/L for BOD, 45.2~190 mg/L for CODcr, 67.2~351 mg/L for TSS, 3.6~10.3 mg/L for TN, 1.2~2.5 mg/L for TP. Heavy metal are not detected except Zn which is observed at only one event. The particle size was distributed to 10 ${\mu}m$ at the 3% weight volume and the 50% cumulative weight percent was shown at 12 ${\mu}m$.
Recently, due to the rapid industrialization and urbanization, a great number of infrastructure and population were concentrated in urban areas. These changes have resulted in unprecedent runoff characteristics in urban basins, and the increase in impermeable areas leads to the growth of the runoff and the peak flow rate. Although many cities have made a lot of efforts to check and expand the stormwater network, the flash flood or the local torrential rain caused a growing number of casualty and property damage. This study analyzed the stormwater passage rate in a target area using SWMM. By incorporating the flow quantity surpassing the storm sewer capacity, a 2D inland flooding analysis model was applied to route the inundated area and velocity.
