The urban style compact apartment which appeared at the end of 1990's was developed by the decrement of household members and in compliance with a new life style. Now it has its own market as a new trend. The purpose of this study is to better understand the characteristics of urban style compact apartments based on an analysis of apartments actually sold on 2008, in order to reflect on the future directions and developments. To support a comprehensive analysis, this study considered three types of compact apartments developed by : a. major developers which own multiple well-recognized brand names, b. mid-size developers under general brand names, c. new or small-size developers specializing in compact apartments. The results from 21 urban style compact apartments could be summarized as follow; 1. Most buyers are Singles or DINKs. The single women occupy a large percentage. 2. Condition of good location is under 5 minutes walk to station and accessibility to 2 and more station. 3. Exterior of building should be harmonious to surrounding and simple, the atmosphere of entrance hall should be warm and relaxed. 4. The spatial character of unit plans are developed by the ways of connecting spaces; 1) Connecting spaces by mobile partition: flexible spaces with expansion 2) Connecting spaces by hall: well arranged spaces with excursion and extends 5. The equipments of kitchen and security are fully carefully planned.

The purpose of this study is to classify urban green space, to assess an imbalance by an administrative district (Dong), and to establish the management zone of urban green spaces for the construction of an environmental city in Changwon. The spatial data of 1:5,000 digital maps, park data in Changwon, land cover by the Ministry of Environment, and IKONOS satellite images from 2003 were used for this analysis. The assessment of the imbalance of urban green spaces was analyzed with the Lorenz curve and Gini's coefficient. The establishment of the management zone was performed by network analysis of GIS. The results of this study are as follows: the urban green spaces were classified as a park green space, a natural green space, and a riparian green space. According to the results of assessment of the imbalance of green spaces, Gini's coefficient was analyzed at higher than 0.4. Thus, the spatial imbalance of urban green spaces in Changwon was evident. The management zones to solve the imbalance were established: "rich zone", "fair zone", "poor zone" and "broken zone". Therefore, the rich and fair zones which have rich green spaces must maintain the good conditions through analysis of the green network and a survey of civic attitudes. The poor and broken zones which have poor green spaces must improve quality and quantity through creation of additional green spaces, construction of an eco-industrial park, and utilization of children's parks and pocket parks.
The purpose of this study is to develop means to apply GIS and remote sensing technology to the analysis of Korean urban open spaces. To achieve this objective, a framework of analysis of urban open spaces was developed, and then the framework was applied for the evaluation of the potential and suitability of open spaces of Ansan City, which is a new town developed to accomodate industries relocation from Seoul, Korea, mainly due to their pollution problems. The software used in this study are IDRISI, a grid-based GIS, and KMIPS, a remote sensing analysis system. Both packages are based on IBM PC/AT computers with Microsoft DOS. Landsat MSS and TM data were used for the land use classification, land use change detection, and analysis of transformed vegetation indices. The size of the geographic data base is 110 rows and 150 columns with the spatial resolution of 100m$\times$100m. The framework of analysis includes both quanititative and qualitative analysis of open spaces. The quantitative analysis includes size and distribution of open spaces, urban develpment of open spaces, and the degree of vegree of vegetation removal of the study area. The qualitative analysis includes evaluative criteria for primary productivity of land, park use potential, major visual resources, and urban environmental control. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, the size of builtup areas increased 18.73km$^2$, while the size of forest land decreased 10.86km$^2$ during last ten years. Agricultural lands maintained its size, but shifted toward outside of the city into forest. Second, the potential of open spaces for park use is limited mainly due to their lack of accessibility and connectivity among open spaces, in spite of ample acreage and good site conditions. Third, major landscape elements and historic sites should be connected to the open space system of the city by new accesses and buffers.

Urban parks and open spaces provide the community residents with the most easily accessible source for outdoor recreation, contributing also to the improvement of quality of natural environment in urban area. The demands of urban residents' for more and better green area are ever-increasing. However, the level of most urban open spaces which are easily accessible for residents are not satisfactory to meet the residents' demand in availability and in quality as well. Most existing urban open spaces are simply built of green areas only or have been developed in almost identical design with little consideration for individual uniqueness of the site. When developing neighbourhood parks in urban housing complexes, for example, little consideration is being given to topographical conditions, interrelation with the adjacent green area, or viability of the urban ecosystem. In many cases, urban park development projects are being done with serious negligence of natural properties of the site, by even destroying existing healthy woodlands. for instance. The objectives of this study are; -To survey on the domestic and the overseas cases of regulatory systems, development status and planning methods for urban open space. -To identify underlying issues of residental park developments in urban housing projects and establish appropriate improvement measures thereof, by studing and analyzing current-use data of developed urban parks and management status thereof. -To establish improved standards for urban open space planning, by integrating above surveys and studies, and recommendation for revision of related legislation is also presented to implement these standards.

Relationship between exposure to combined noise sources and community annoyance have been investigated. Social surveys were conducted in urban spaces near the construction site with road traffics. The question relating to noise annoyance was answered on an 11-point numerical scale and 5-point verbal scale according to ISO 15666. The questionnaire also contained demographic factors, interference with daily activities, health-related symptoms, and noise sensitivity. Noise levels were measured in terms of A-weighted equivalent level ($L_{Aeq}$), and noise mapping technique was applied to predict the noise levels of urban spaces. Synthesis curves for the relationship between noise levels and percentage highly annoyed for combined noise sources were derived, and compared to the curves from a single noise source.
This study compared and analyzed existing studies and released papers to identify the "definition and scope of urban agriculture" which correspond to the circumstances of Korea based on the fact that urban agriculture was selected as one of the measures to pursue green growth by the Presidential Committee on Green Growth (PCGG) and the discussions and deliberations among PCGG, government, academia, civic organizations, and experts. It also aims to present the ways of policy to facilitate the development of urban agriculture based on the mentioned identification. This research proposes the definition of urban agriculture as 'all agricultural activities that incorporates multi-functional public benefits of agriculture performed within the administrative district of a city. However, the scope of urban agriculture should exclude the agricultural sites, the methods, and the activities that are against the multi-functional public benefits of agriculture, which will be determined depending on the spaces, methods, and purposes of planting food crops. In order to facilitate the development of urban agriculture, the government should implement the policy measures as following: (1) to analyze spaces for farming, and provide the spaces to the citizens; (2) to prepare legislation and institution that will allow citizens to use the farming spaces continuously; (3) to develop Korean-style urban agriculture model that fully reflects the features of Korean cities; (4) to develop a system where the urban citizens can easily learn and experience the urban agriculture; and, (5) to provide incentives that will attract active participation of urban citizens such as carbon mileage. (6) to analyze effect of urban agriculture to save energy and food self-sufficiency.

Parks and green spaces have various functions for improving urban physical and social environments. Urban parks and green space planning have been applied in this study for the purpose of enhancing the urban environment. The most popular method for urban parks and green space planning is incrementing the quantity of parks and green spaces. However, it may not be possible to designate new parks and green spaces in a large city because of the difficulty of obtaining land. This study explores how urban parks and green space planning produces better quality urban environments without having to designate new parks and green spaces. The study evaluates existing parks and green spaces according to the satisfaction of the users. This evaluation could be a useful tool for those planning urban parks and green space systems. The study was performed in Tama Newtown, Japan, within two districts with two distinct characteristics of park systems: concentration and equality arrangement forms. For comparison, on-site questionnaires were used, with 319 residents in the area responding to the study. The data was collected and analyzed, using t-test, factor analysis, and multiple regression methods. The study found there was no difference in satisfaction factors be tween the two districts. However, differences were found within each of the districts, depending on parks and green space components. For example, the quality of green space was the most important factor for the district with a planned concentration arrangement form of parks and green spaces, but, separation of the pedestrian and vehicular systems was the most important factor in the district with a planned equality arrangement form of park system. Factors affecting the satisfaction of parks and green spaces that were common between the two sites were: accessibility, quality of park, quality of green space, and separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffics.
The purpose of this research is to find applicable design characteristics and methods of communal spaces in vertical urban multi-family housing. With this goal, several overseas' multi-family housing projects are selected and their communal spaces are identified. The design characteristics of the communal spaces are analyzed with a special focus on the territories such as an individual unit boundary, building interior and exterior boundary. In terms of the framework for analysis, territoriality, openness, and unique characteristics are reviewed. As a result, the communal spaces are created using various spatial composition methods such as addition, subtraction, connection, extension, accumulation, and isolation. The communal space programs are integrated in plans and sections throughout the buildings. Visual openness and connection with surrounding urban environments are articulated by void spaces, transparent and translucent building materials, green spaces, and applications of graphical images. Communal identities and aesthetics are emphasized by unique building forms and space arrangements. The uses of finish materials, colors, objects, and images add strong characters to the communal spaces. For a further research, it is necessary to combine a design method study with residents' behaviors and community interactions.

The purpose of this study is to determine the suitable illuminance model of an urban neighborhood park. To this end, 1 dependent variable and 11 independent variables were set, and multiple regression analysis was applied to find correlation between variables and the model. The results of this study are as follows; 1) Among 11 independent variables abstracted to study suitable illuminance model of an urban neighborhood park, as a result of analysis on correlation between suitable illuminance of a dependent variable and activity space by using dummy variables, activity type and illuminance by spaces the suitable illuminance required for an urban neighborhood park was much influenced by activity type, and the fact that the activity was not limited to a specific space. 2) As a result of multiple regression analysis, independent variables influencing the suitable illuminance model of an urban neighborhood park were activity space, illuminance by spaces, seated activity, standing activity, and sporting activity. And, for relative contribution of independent variables to suitable illuminance, activity with sporting showed an importance 22 times higher than seated activity. When the central square(Sp_1) of activity spaces was set to reference category using dummy variables, it showed a contribution 52 times higher than sorting space(Sp_7) and the central square as the most important variable. 3) It was analyzed that suitable illuminance of an urban neighborhood part was most influenced by sporting activity but the relative contribution of a sporting space where activity with sporting occurs was least in view of the function of the space. Very high illuminance is required to accept high activity, and if illuminance at a certain space becomes too high, it may influence the illuminance of other spaces, and may consequently have a negative effect on the suitable illuminance of an urban neighborhood park. The results of this study were mainly for teenagers and young adults in their twenties, so further concrete studies which consider gender and a wider age range are needed in the future. Based on subsequent study, suitable illuminance by spaces shall be suggested.
This study analyzes the changes of lifestyle and urban spaces with the advent of U-City and tries to propose a direction of urban policies reflecting them. For this, it investigates lifestyle changes to predict the phase of urban spaces in the future. In a survey on urban functionalities with downtown as the main space of activities, it was expected that traffic for the use of these functionalities would be reduced. Traffic reduction was predicted to restrain downtown from growing and weaken the concentration of downtown activity. For the reorganization of existing spaces, in particular, public spaces would be changed to multi-purpose spaces in which various urban activities can be carried out using ubiquitous technologies. With the advent of U-City and the various changes of conditions, it is expected that the demand for land use and urban planning facilities would be altered by downtown and peripheries. A planning tool with a more concrete demand estimation of the future demand in individual areas of usage should be developed and it should be reflected in urban planning. Also, with the integration of functionalities so that more efficient land use will be possible, flexible designation of usage areas is necessary. Along with this, to prevent the decline of old downtown areas and provincial cities, the balanced installation of IT-related infrastructures will precede.
