  • The pollution status of heavy metals in the soils of children's playground was investigated for a sustainable soil environment in urban parks of Seoul. As sampling sites, 281 locations were selected from a 7 districts in the Seoul city. The overall mean concentrations of the heavy metals (Cd 0.21 mg/kg, Cu 5.97 mg/kg, As 2.40 mg/kg, Pb 7.55 mg/kg, Zn 34.08 mg/kg, Ni 4.22 mg/kg, Hg 0.02 mg/kg and Cr6+ not detected.) in the soils of the palygrounds were lower than the worrisome level in criteria for area 1 in Korea soil environment conservation act. In addition, when the soil pollution grade (SPC) was evaluated as an average value, it was found to be less than 100, the first grade, at all points in the seven autonomous districts, indicating thatthe soil was in good soil condition. However, when evaluated as the maximum value, some of the five districts showed values of 100 or more. Therefore, it was found that continuous management and interest of the local government, which is the management body of children's playgrounds, is necessary for a safe soil environment.

  • To prepare the management plan for reduction of the organic carbon emission caused by soil respirations, the amount of organic carbon emission from the pedosphere in Pinus densiflora community within metropolis park was quantified and then the correlations between quantified values and climate factors were analyzed. To this study, we investigated the amount of emitted organic carbon through soil respirations of Pinus densiflora community within Mt. Nam in Seoul-si, Korea, and identified correlationship with environmental factors. As a result, the average amount of organic carbons, included in soil respirations of P. densiflora community in Mt. Nam, was 7.978 ton C ha-1 yr-1. Also, precipitation of spring (March to May) was one of the environmental factors explaining the increase and decrease of soil respiration. This results suggest a drainage management to keep the low water content in understorey soils is important to an ecological management of metropolitan forests.

  • Heavy metals emitted from urban development do not decompose in the soil and remain for long periods, continually impacting the environment. Since the mid-1990s, there has been increasing societal concern in South Korea regarding soil contamination, prompting various legislative revisions to reduce pollution. This study utilizes the Environmental Impact Assessment Support System (EIASS) to investigate projects in the metropolitan area that have exceeded the Ministry of Environment's soil contamination concern levels from 1989 to 2022 and to examine improvements in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process. The results reveal that the average concentrations of nine contaminants-cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and fluoride (F)-have all increased over the years. Among these, Zn had the highest relative proportion, with 37.5% of the 40 sites exceeding environmental concern levels. Investigation of 19 specific projects at these exceedance sites showed that only 7 had documented analyses of contamination causes and remediation plans, and just one had contracted additional remediation services, though results from these efforts were found to be lacking. Furthermore, since 2019, a significant proportion of these sites were involved in residential developments, likely due to government initiatives in new city development and extensive housing supply plans. This research emphasizes the importance of public disclosure of the processes and outcomes of remediation efforts on historically contaminated soils prior to project development. It discusses improvements to the EIA by reviewing current legislation and international examples. The findings of this study are expected to heighten public awareness about heavy metal contamination and enhance transparency in soil remediation efforts, contributing to sustainable environmental management and development.

  • As a transition zone between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, riparian areas of rivers and streams play significant roles in production and decomposition for river and stream systems. Understanding of the physical and ecological characteristics of riparian areas are, therefore, important for the management of river and stream systems. It is especially important to understand the characteristics of riparian areas for the Nakdong River in Korea which has a large watershed area and diverse land uses. This study aimed at collecting field data, according to stream types, which are essential for the management of riparian areas of the middle and lower reaches of the Nakdong River, Korea. Most riparian areas surveyed in this study had roads within 100 meters from river edges. Distances from water edge to banks were less than 1m for most riparian areas neighboring agricultural lands, indicating that those areas might be very vulnerable to pollutant inputs from non-point sources. Water quality data indicated that soil erosion in the riparian areas could be a major source of phosphorus input to the Nakdong River and land use patters might have a significant influence on nitrogen concentration in the river. Heavy metal concentrations in soils of the riparian areas of the river were below soil quality standards, except arsenic and chromium. Vegetation surveys showed that therophytes were the most frequently occurred riparian plants in the Nakdong River. Number of aquatic plant species increased downstream, with the most diverse aquatic plants observed in wetlands and irrigation canals of the West Nakdong River. Occurrence rate of naturalized plants and urbanization index were high in the survey sites adjacent to urban and agricultural areas.

  • This study was performed to suggest growth status data of the large old trees as the natural monuments of Korea. Field investigation of 70 large old trees as the natural monuments of Korea was carried out in Seoul, Inchon, Kyungki, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Chonbuk, Chonnam. The main field of this study is classified into the growth condition, soil state and management situation. The results of this study are below : The age distribution of the large old trees as the natural monuments of Korea is as follows : above l00years in 5.9%, above 200years in 8.9%, above 300 years in 11.8%, above 400 years in 16.2%, above 500 years in 16.2% and above 600years in 41.1%. Location types of the large old trees as the natural monuments of Korea are found in 11 types; the types are hill side(22.9%), historical monument area(15.7%), field(l4.3%) and building area(12.9%), etc. Also, growth type of the trees is individually placed. In the aspect of soil environment, the acidification of soils has been appearing in all surveyed areas, and the soil of Seoul area has much acidum phosphoricum because of excessive fertilizer. Finally, in management situation. major factors inhibiting growth of the large old trees as the natural monuments of Korea are soil covering of protruded root above ground, soil hardening by human, embankments, small area that has been surrounded fence. Continuous monitoring and accumulation of status data are necessary to preserve the large old trees as the natural monuments of Korea.

  • The use of diverse methods for the retaining system has been continuously increased in order to maintain the stability during excavation. However, ground anchor system occasionally may have the restriction in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures because of space limitation. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently useful as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in excavating the zone of weak soils or nearby the existing structures. Therefore, applying the pretension force to the soil nails then could play important roles to reduce deformations mainly in an upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as to improve the local slope stability. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PSN(Pretention Soil Nailing) is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements during top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global slope stability. Up to now, the PSN system has been investigated mainly focusing on an establishment of the design procedure. In the present study, the field tests including pull-out tests were fulfilled to investigate the behavior of characteristics for PSN system. All results of tests were also analyzed to provide a fundamental and efficient design.

  • This study analyzed characteristics of natural and human environments in Chuncheon's Gongji stream, and suggested nature-friendly planning strategies for self-purification of water quality, biodiversity improvement and conservative waterfront recreation. The environmental analysis included streambed structures, floodplain soils, water quality, vegetation, wildlife, and human facilities. Natural colonization of vegetation for the middle section of the study stream was obstructed by a straightened concrete revetment of baseflow channel, and vehicle movement and concrete parking lots across the floodplain. These human disturbances also deteriorated the naturalness of the stream landscape and limited habitation of bird species. However, natural sedimented wetlands in half of the channel width for the lower section of the stream contributed to a desirable vegetational landscape and greater bird occurrence. Based on BOD measurements, water quality of the stream fell under class $II{\sim}III$ of the stream water-quality standard, but it was worse around sewage outlets due to incomplete sewage collection especially during the dry season. Dominant fish species included typical inhabitants of good water-quality streams that are tolerant of adverse habitat changes. Nature-friendly planning strategies were established based on analysis of the environmental characteristics. They focused on not merely spatial zoning and layout divided into four zones - preservation, partial preservation, conservation and use -, but close-to-nature channel revetment techniques, natural water-purification facilities, biotope diversification, and water-friendly recreation and circulation. Strategies pursued both renewal of stream naturalness and hydraulic stability of streamflow by minimizing transformation of natural channel micro-topography and biotope, and by reflecting natural traces of streambed structures such as revetment scour and sedimentation.

  • We cannot imagine any more the environment and energy problems are separated from our lives. The various attempts to solve these problems are made all over the world. In this study it was performed to analyze a different heating and cooling load depending on the earth-sheltering method and kind of soils by using TRNSYS 16 as the first step to establish the design guidelines for earth-sheltered architecture, one of the eco-friendly and low energy consuming building types. After performing this simulation, we found the result like this. It is the most lowest load in case of all of walls and roof being earth-sheltered. But considering of the load reduction rate, the effect of earth-sheltering the exterior vertical wall is more efficient for load reduction than the one of earth-sheltering a roof. And we got a lower thermal load in case of a lower heat conductivity of soil. Afterwards we will conduct a further study for boundary condition at earth-sheltered surface and the simulation analysis about the sensitivity variables. The final goal of this study is preparing the design guidelines for earth-sheltered architecture. so we will contribute to building energy saving.

  • To reinforce bearing capacity-changed section or different foundation in the same building, empirical or simple tools have been used. To solve this problem, an analytical solution which can evaluate and reinforce the stability of foundation is introduced. To suggest a clue for the problems, current foundation reinforcing method is studied through recent literature studies and the structural analyses of foundation slab are performed on the pile foundation of 49$m^2$, 59$m^2$ and 84$m^2$ I type apartments in 15 story building. The analyses are conducted with SAP 2000, a computer program for ordinary structural analysis. To predict the moments of slab by ground non-uniformity, the structural analysis results for the foundation slab of 3 types 15 story apartment buildings in 49$m^2$, 59$m^2$ and 84$m^2$ I type on non-uniformity ground are shown in the diagrams.

  • Compressive axial behavior of the variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation is investigated from the field load test results at ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ construction site in Incheon city. Variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation is a type of partial-displacement pile formed by mixing bidding material with in situ soils to obtain a rigid and strong variable cross-section column in a relatively soft ground. The foundations are usually constructed as a group; however in this study, only single foundation was installed and tested under compressive axial load on foundation head. For the comparison of the variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation axial behavior, behavior of typical Pretensioned spun high strength concrete (PHC) pile constructed on a relatively soft ground near the surface was analyzed. It was concluded that variable cross-section soft ground reinforced foundation efficiently resists against axial load with sufficient stiffness and strength within a considerable range of axial load magnitude.
