  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the levels of knowledge and behavior towards food hygiene among child consumers, examine the factors influencing them, and analyze the causal relationship between them. The data were collected from 521 elementary school students in Youngnam area by a self-administered questionnaire. Frequencies, Pearson's correlation analysis, multiple regression analyses, and path analysis were conducted by SPSS Windows. The results from this study were as follows. First, the level of knowledge towards food hygiene was not particularly high, and the level of behavior was somewhat more than the average. Second, the factors influencing the level of knowledge towards food hygiene were school record (upper and middle), and concerns about food hygiene. In addition, concerns about food hygiene, the frequency of food hygiene education in the family, and the level of knowledge towards food hygiene had an effect on the level of behavior towards food hygiene. Third, in the analysis of the causal relationship between the knowledge and behavior towards food hygiene, school record indirectly influenced the behavior towards food hygiene, and the frequency of food hygiene education in the family directly affected the behavior towards food hygiene. On the other hand, concerns about food hygiene had direct and indirect influence on the behavior towards food hygiene. In addition, the knowledge towards food hygiene showed a direct effect on the behavior towards food hygiene. These results imply that knowledge towards food hygiene is a very important factor to improve the children's behavior towards food hygiene and that parents' concerns and guidance for children are needed.

  • The goal of this research was to provide the basic data of sexual education for late schooler by finding out what they want to know about sex, or to see, if any, its relevancy between female and male students and between each grade. The sample for this research was a total of 453 students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade from 12 different classes at two elementary schools which were located in C city and in B province. The children were requested to write down three points on what they want to know or to learn most about sex, and their answers were put through two analytical stages in order to classify and to examine. The followings are the conclusions from the data. 1. The female cluster took 44.2% out of the whole sample, and there were 151 students per each grade. The specific girl ratios for each grade were 42.4%, 50.3% and 39.7% respectively. 2. It was noted that a total of 1,195 questions were gathered from the students writings, 45% of the questions was raised by the female students. The 4th grade students raised 432questions (43.8% by the girl) while the 5th. and the 6th grade students raised 387 (53.2% by the girl) and 376 questions (42.3% by the girl) respectively. The average number of questions per students was 2.6 while the female students raised 2.8 questions which was more than the average 2.5 questions by male students. It was the 4th grade female student cluster, which raised the most question (3.0) while the 6th grade male students raised the least question (2.4) in average. 3. The questions raised by the children could be divided into seven categories of the knowledge need on sex. They were Reproduction (310 questions, 25.9%), Sexual Culture (230, 19.2%), Concept of sex (125, 18.0%), Changes of Puberty (172, 14.4%), Sexual Health (119, 10.0%), Anatomy and Physiology of Reproductive System (78, 6.5%) and Sexual Tendency and behavior (71, 5.9%). 4. 'Reproduction' was the most frequently raised questions not only by both sex groups but also by the 5th grade students. Both sexes in the 4th grade showed the highest interest in Sexual Culture while it was Changes in Puberty for the both sexes in the 6th grade. The knowledge need on sex of the children indicated what they understand sexuality. They apprehended sex as sex, gender and sexuality in an inclusive way. They showed a major interest in the biological sex and the sexual activities. It seems that the children managed to understand clearly the meaning of gender, furthermore, they even pointed out that the streotyped sex role, patrimonial system and the sexual discrimination were unreasonable. The students possessed not only the least but also the most negative understanding in regard of sexuality. Two suggestions were made from the above conclusions for the practical sex education as well as its research. 1. For the practice: The sex education for the elementary upper grade school student should be relevant with their cognitive characteristics, also it should be more specific on the reproductive organs of both sexes, the actual scenes of the pregnancy and child delivery procedures. The gender concept should be added to the biological sex education, which will lead them to understand the unreasonableness of today's male-superior phenomenon and correct them. It is also necessary to develop educational programs for this age group so as to help them to understand sex in the sense of sexuality as well. 2. For the research: It is not easy to draw out a through conclusion since this study was carried out as one-time data collection. Yet it is undeniably helpful for the sex education if we can understand what the children want to know about sex, how much they know about it by conducting deep-interview researches through a small number of sample.

  • This study devised a user-participatory design process for users to participate directly in the design process and was implemented at Daegu Padong Elementary School. Users of the school forest were divided into four groups: the lower grades, the upper grades, local residents(parents included), and faculty. The methods of this study were image survey, preference survey, card playing, and model playing. Researchers investigated the level of user satisfaction the following year. The specific design process is as follows: First of all, the concept of the school forest was established through audio-visual education for students and image research was conducted through drawing and painting activities entitled 'The School Forest I Want'. Second, in the image survey, a survey of areas and facilities with high frequency use was conducted in the study of the lower grades, the upper grades, local residents, and the faculty. Image cards of spaces and facilities that showed high preference were produced and the cards were placed in four groups on the school lot plan to check the location of place and facilities desired. Based on this, a model and a basic idea were created through consultation with future users. Lastly, the study design was completed. After 1 year from the completion of the school forest, users were again surveyed regarding their satisfaction with use. The importance of this study is as follows: 1) Treating all potential users of a school forest as the subject of design participation, 2) Reasoning out a plan created by the users themselves through consultation and discussion throughout all steps of the design process, 3) Grasping how users utilize a school forest and the type of spaces most preferred via preference survey after completion of the school forest and showing the importance of user participation by showing that spaces preferred by users were similar to those in which experts were also highly interested.

  • Since the mathematics learning achievement level is closely related to problem-solving ability, it is necessary to understand the relationship between problem-solving ability and meta-affect ability from the point of view of general mathematics learning ability. In this study, we compared the frequency analysis and the case analysis of the functional aspects of the meta-affect in elementary school students' problem-solving processes according to mathematics learning achievement level in parallel with frequency analysis and case analysis. In other words, the frequency of occurrence of meta-affect, the frequency of meta-affective type, and the frequency of meta-functional types of meta-affect were compared and analyzed according to the mathematics learning achievement level in the collaborative problem-solving activities of small group members with similar mathematics learning achievement level. In addition, we analyzed the representative cases of meta-affect by meta-functional types according to the mathematics learning achievement level in detail. As a result, meta-affect in problem-solving processes of the upper level group acted as relatively various types of meta-functions compared to the lower level group. And, the lower level group, the more affective factors acted in the problem-solving processes.

  • This study is the study on health promoting behaviors of 6th grade students according to sex. The purpose of this study is to find the difference in the value of health in their lives among 6/sup th/ grade students according to sex, to examine the differences in practicing health promoting behaviors, and to determine the correlation between the practice of health promoting behaviors and the characteristics of these students. The subjects of this study were 177 6/sup th/ grade students who were randomly selected from two elementary schools in Taegu City. The tools used to measure health promoting behaviors were the measuring utility for practicing health promoting behaviors developed by Kyung-Suk Ki (1983) and the utility for the values of health in lives developed by Wallston, Maides and Wallston and translated by Gin Yoon (1989). The data collected were analyzed with t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and descriptive statistics using SPSS program. The results of the present study were as follows : 1) According to the results of the value placed in health in their lives, the number of students who placed health high in their lives was 69 boys (75%) and 64 girls (75.3%). 2) According to the results obtained from comparing the degree of practicing health promoting behaviors according to sex, in the field of personal hygiene and daily habits, the girls showed a higher degree of practice with 3.26±0.33 and the boys, 3.05±0.45(t=-3.484, p=0.001) : and in the field of contagious diseases, the girls scored significantly higher with 3.40±0.39 than the boys with 2.99±0.54(t=-2.363, p=0.019). In the filed of preventing accidents, the girls showed a meaning high significant result with 3.16±0.46 than the boys with 2.99±0.54(t=-2.362, p=0.019). When the results from the total questions in the field of health promoting behaviors were compared, the girls showed a meaningfully high correlation with 3.19±0.28 than the boys with 3.07±0.36(t=-2.601, p=0.010). Thus, the results showed that the girls, compares with the boys, practice more behaviors of personal hygiene & daily habits, prevention of communicable diseases, and prevention of accidents. 3) According to the results of the relationship between the subjects’ characteristics and their health promoting behaviors according to set in the case of the boys, they showed a meaningful positive correlation with health promoting behaviors and the current status of health (r=0.266, p=0.005). Thus, for the boys, as their health status was better, the more health promoting behaviors they showed. In the case of the girls, the meaningful variables had a correlation with the health promoting behaviors were the number of extra-curricula activities(r=0.182, p=0.047) and the birth order(r=-0.192, p=0. 024). In overall regardless of sex, the health status (r=0.188, p=0.006) and birth order(r=-0.149, p=0.024) showed a meaningful correlation with practicing health promoting behaviors. With the above results, we suggest the following proposals. 1) In elementary children of lower and upper classmen as applied with the current school age, developing a utility to measure health promoting behaviors is needed since the physical, emotional and intellectual development of these children exist. 2) According to the results of this study, developing a program for health promotion is needed in 6/sup th/ grade students.

  • This study aims at expressing the correlation of 'creativity' and 'emotional intelligence' in cartoon expression learning through literary research and correlation analysis. Analyses were made on each sub-factor for the self emotional intelligence evaluation and the creativity evaluation made by experts through cartoon expressions by elementary school students, who are the learners. Studies on preceding research showed that creativity and emotional intelligence had a correlation and that it is common preception that higher creativity is equivalent to higher emotional intelligence. However, results of correlation analysis in this study showed that while there is a relation between creativity evaluation and emotional intelligence in cartoon expression learning, not all factors were correlated. Furthermore, the results of emotional evaluation of the upper and lower group learners did not show similar results in the creativity evaluation. Through this study, it can be said that for emotional intelligence and creativity factors, finding the appropriate emotional intelligence development method would be the way to enhance creativity. Therefore, in order to develop creativity through cartoon expression learning, systematic research should be performed for extracting the relative emotional intelligence factors.
