The physical and chemical characteristics of soils in a small watershed were investigated and the effect of geology and land use on soil quality were examined by using multivariate statistical methods, principal components analysis and discriminant analysis. The soil developed from andesite had finer texture and higher contents of water extractable inorganic components, clay, and mafic minerals than the soil developed from granite. It is considered that the accumulation of salts in the farmland soils indicated by electrical conductivity, contents of cations and anions and pH was caused by fertilizer input during cultivation. The low contents of organic matter in the farmland soils was due to the enhanced oxidation of organic matter by tillage and by the harvest of crops. The contents of inorganic components are increased as following order: upland > orchard > paddy field > forest. The high contents of water soluble $SO_4\;^{2-}$ of paddy soils is due to the oxidation of sulfides mineral formed during the flooding period during the air-dry and extraction. The results of principal components analysis show the difference of soil quality was controlled by geology and land use. PCI indicate the input of fertilizer, mineral weathering and ion exchange reaction by application of nitrogenous fertilizers. The results of two discriminant analyses using water extractable inorganic components and their ratios by land use were also clearly classified by discriminant function 1 and 2. In discriminant analysis by components, discriminant function 1 indicated the effect of fertilizer application and increased as following order: upland > orchard > paddy field > forest soil. The investigated and predicted data for land use from discriminant analysis showed similar results. The discriminant analysis can be used as a useful method certifying the change of land use.

The purpose of this study was to investigate damages of garlics occurred under cold storage and farmhouse storage condition, influence of cultural and environmental factors on storage spoilage of garlics, and to establish control strategies to reduce damages occurred under storage of garlics. Decays of garlics were highly related with cultural condition (paddy field or upland soil), ventilation, storage temperature and relative humidity, continuous cropping years, and harvesting stage. Early-harvested garlics were more decayed than late-harvested garlics. Garlics cultivated on paddy field were less decayed than ones cultivated on upland soil under farmhouse storage condition. The densities of Penicillium spp. and Fusarium spp. were higher on plot with long term continuous cropping cultivation history than on plot with short term continuous cropping cultivation history. However there is no relation between continuous cropping years and percent of decay of garlics. As a result of investigating influence of environmental factors on decay of garlics, P. hirsutum caused severe spoilage under high relative humidity condition, while F. oxysporum and Stemphyllium botryosum were not related with relative humidity. The three postharvest pathogens grew well above woe. In addition when P. hirsutum and S. botryosum were cultured for two months, they grew even at $-1^{\circ}C$. Except for environmental factors, wounds occurred through farming works. had an effect on storage spoilage of garlics. Garlics only hurt with a toothpick without inoculation of pathogens were decayed more severe than those inoculated with pathogens without wounds. Seven agro-chemicals showed highly suppressive effect were selected by measuring mycelial growth of three major pathogens of garlics on potato dextrose agar amended with 0.1% (v/v) of each fungicide. When they were foliar-sprayed on garlics 30 days before harvesting, it was confirmed that they suppressed storage spoilage of garlics. Also when garlics were sprayed with and drenched into the suspension of Benoram WP very after harvesting garlics, garlic damages by postharvest pathogens were reduced remarkably.
This survey of weed population by different soil moisture with paddy-upland rotation was conducted to investigate information on weed flora and its ecology between two years. Weed species were assessed in April : 2009, 2010. Soil samples were taken from each study plot to assess the impact soil moisture on the occurrence and abundance of dominance weed species. Soil water of poorly drained field ranged from 10.2~18.2% more than 11.8~14.3% of somewhat poorly drained field. Weeds of fields composed of 19 species belonging to 12 families. Among 12 families, 6 weed species belonged to Compositae (31.6%) were the biggest family, Cruciferae were 2 species (10.5%), and Rubiaceae were 2 species (10.5%), respectively. Youngia japonica had the highest summed dominance ratio(SDR) (97.0%) and followed by Conyza canadensis (92.1%), Galium spurium (35.3%) and Hemistepta lyrata (28.4%) of somewhat poorly drainage in 2009. Artemisia princeps the highest SDR (100%) and followed by Stellaria alsine(55.2%), Y. japonica (38.3%) and Nasturtium officinale (28.5%) of poorly drainage in 2009. And, Stellaria alsine had the highest SDR (86.8%) and followed by Alopecurus aequalis (77.7%), Astragalus sinicus (68.7%) and Y. japonica (46.3%) of somewhat poorly drainage in 2010. S. alsine the highest SDR (93.7%) and followed by A. aequalis (78.6%), Nasturtium officinale (31.3%) and Y. japonica (30.4%) of poorly drainage in 2010. Simpson's index was calculated to 0.12~0.23, which showed that weed occurrence with different soil moisture in paddy-upland rotation and between years was various. Similarity coefficient between years was 43.0% (2009) and 74.2% (2010), which indicate a low diversity because of the moisture in the agro-ecosystem.
"Hyedang", a new covered cultivar derived from the crosses between "Suwon300" and "Haganemugi//CI08397/Haganemugi" developed at the Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA in 2007. The origin of "Hyedang" is "Iksan 407" (SB951033-B-B-B-72). The initial cross was made in 1995 and the selected line showed a high yield and good quality characteristics under yield trial test in 2004. "Iksan407" consistently performed well for three years (2005-2007) from the four locations of regional yield trial (RYT) in Korea and released as "Hyedang". The characteristics of "Hyedang" were the following: rate III growth habit, green leaf and stem, compact spike and with long rough awns. The heading date was April 25 in upland and April 17 in paddy field, which was 2 and 3 days earlier than that of check cultivar, "Olbori". The culm length was 80 cm which was 8 cm shorter than those of check cultivar. It showed spike length of 4.3 cm and 696 spikes per $m^2$, 51 grains per spike, 35.0 g of 1,000 grain weight and 704 g of test weight. It showed stronger winter hardiness and higher resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) than those with check cultivar. It showed similar protein content and higher whiteness than those of the check cultivar and diastatic power was higher than that of Olbori. The average yield of the pearled grain in the RYT was $4.17ton\;ha^{-1}$ in upland and $4.27ton\;ha^{-1}$ in paddy field, which was 23% and 9% higher than that of the check cultivar, respectively. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum mean temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$ in January in Korean peninsula.
Remotely sensed satellite images can be applied to monitor and obtain land surface information on inaccessible areas. We classified paddy field area in North Korea based on on-screen digitization with visual interpretation using 291 RapidEye satellite images covering the whole country. Criteria for paddy field classification based on RapidEye imagery acquired at different time of rice growth period was defined. Darker colored fields with regular shape in the images with false color composite from early May to late June were detected as rice fields. From early July to late September, it was hard to discriminate rice canopy from other type of vegetation including upland crops, grass, and forest in the image. Regular form of readjusted rice field in the plains and uniform texture when compared with surrounding vegetation. Paddy fields classified from RapidEye imagery were mapped and the areas were calculated by administrative district, province or city. Sixty six percent of paddy fields ($3,521km^2$) were distributed in the west coastal regions including Pyeongannam-do, Pyeonganbuk-do, and Hwanghaenam-do. The paddy field areas classified from RapidEye images showed less than 1% of difference from the paddy field areas of North Korea reported by FAO/WFP (Food and Agriculture Organization/World Food Programme).

Soybean is one of the important food crop around the world. Especially in East Asia, it is the main ingredient for traditional food like soy sauce and soy paste. The double cropping system including soybean following onion, Chinese cabbage, and potato is widely adopted in Southern region of Korea. In this system, sowing date of second crop (soybean) can be delayed depending on first crops' growth period and weather condition. When planting date is delayed it is known that soybean yield is declined because of shorter vegetative growth period and earlier flowering induced by warm temperature and changes in photoperiod. The objective of this study was to determine soybean growth and yield responses as plant populations at late planting date. Field experiment was conducted at Department of Functional Crop, National Institute of Crop Science, RDA located in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-Do for two years ('13-'14) in upland field with mid-late maturity cultivar Daewon. A split-plot block design was used with three replications. Main plots were three sowing dates from June 20 to July 20 with 15 days intervals, and subplots were 4 levels of planting densities. Data of maturity (R8) was recorded, yield components and yield were examined after harvesting. Experimental data were analyzed by using PROC GLM, and DMRT were used for mean comparison. Optimum planting population for maximizing soybean yield in late planting which compared with standard population. In mid-June planting, higher planting density causes increased plant height and decreased diameter which lead to higher risk of lodging, however, reduced growth period due to late planting alleviated this problem. Therefore higher seeding rates can provide protection against low seedling emergence caused by late planting in this region.

This study was conducted to assay the relationship between the characteristics of watershed and water quality, and to evaluate water quality characteristics of the classified types by TSI deviation analysis with the collected data from 490 reservoir. Relatively shallow depth (<5m) reservoirs out of selected 490 appeared to be eutrophic. The mean TP concentration in reservoirs with the PFA+UFA/watershed area of above 30% was ${\geq}0.1$ mg $L^{-1}$. The mean TN concentration in reservoirs with the PFA/watershed area of above 25% was ${\geq}2.6$ mg $L^{-1}$. Based on the TSI deviation analysis, water quality parameters in TYPE III reservoirs were in high concentration compared to other reservoirs types. Characteristics of Type III generally showed eutrophic, small DA/RA ratio, shallow depth, and large paddy field and upland field to watershed ratio compared to other types of reservoirs. Both water quality and morpho-physical parameters, Type I and II reservoirs were similar with the exceptions of BOD and chi. ${\alpha}$ concentration. Phosphorus in Type I reservoirs was not the primary limiting factor on algal growth, but significant decrease chl. ${\alpha}$ concentration with the increasing TN/TP indicated that phosphorus was the possible secondary limiting factor. Overall results indicated that type of land use, such as PFA and UFA area in watershed, was important parameters for the assessment of water quality characteristics, and phosphorus was limiting nutrient on algal growth in 490 reservoirs.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of some soil conditioners, such as polyvinylalcohol(PVA), zeolite and perlite, on the changes of soil physical properties and on tobacco growth in paddy-upland rotated field. Soil conditioners were treated at the rates of 120kg in PVA, 500kg in zeolite and perlite per l0a, respectively. Ratio of soil aggregates formed from the treated plots tended to. be higher than those from the control in the order of PVA > perlite > zeolite. The wet aggregate stability, mean weight diameter, moisture retention and air permeability from the treated plots tended to be higher than those from the control. Amounts of water-stable aggregates of PV A-treated soil increased with higher soil moisture showing a peak at 50% of moisture content. But with respect to particle of size aggregate formed for crop growth and workability in field, it was presumed that 40% of soil moisture content would be most desirable. Visual characters of soil surface throughout the experiment clearly showed that treated soils were maintaining better surface roughness and porosity than control, but difference in water stable aggregates among treated plots tended to be narrowed. The growths of tobacco, espacially its root zone were better in conditioner treated plots than in non-treated plot showing best in PVA-treated soil.

Greenhouse-gas emission factors are widely used to estimate emissions arising from a defined unit of a specific activity. Such estimates are used both for international reporting to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and for a myriad of national and subnational reporting purposes. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides a methodology for national and sub-national estimation of known greenhouse gas emissions including $N_2O$ for each sector from which the emissions arise. The objective of this study was to develop an emission factor to estimate the direct $N_2O$ emission from an agricultural field cultivated with Chinese cabbage during spring season in 2010-2012. An estimated emission factor of $N_2O$ calculated over three years from field experiment accounting for cumulative $N_2O$ emission, nitrogen fertilization rate, and background $N_2O$ emission was $0.0056{\pm}0.00254$ (95% CI) Kg $N_2O-N/kg$ N. More extensive studies are needed to develop $N_2O$ emission factors for other upland crops in various regions of Korea because $N_2O$ emission is influenced by many factors including climate characteristics, soil properties agricultural practices and crop species.
Soil loss and runoff were investigated in a small watershed located in Sangeo-ri, Yeoju-eup, Yeoju-gun, Kyonggi-do. The watershed with the area of 35 ha consists of forest, grassland, uplands and mulberry. V-notch type water tank. flow-meter, automatic water sampler and rain gauge were installed at the main outlet stream. Out of $1.037.9Mg\;35ha^{-1}$ of total annual rainfall. 17.9% was lost via run-off. The total amount of soil eroded was $152.2Mg\;35ha^{-1}$, of which $78.6Mg\;35ha^{-1}$ was suspended load and $73.6Mg\;35ha^{-1}$ ha was sediment load. The soil losses under different land uses were $16.02Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for upland annual Crops. $2.69Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for mulberry field, $0.58Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for grassland and $0.55Mg\;ha^{-1}$ for forest. The predicted soil loss by Universal Soil Loss Equation was approximately 20% underestimated in forest, grassland and uplands, and 32% underestimated in mulberry field.
