A series of CU triaxial compression tests were conducted to investigate the variation of -untrained shear strength of underconsolidated clay at different degrees of consolidation. The soil samples were artificially made by one-dimensional consolidation using soft Bangkok Clay. The test results showed that the undrained shear strength of clay parabolically increased convoking downward with increasing degrees of consolidation. However, all the measured shear strength were unanimously related to the effective stress. These experimental results were used in the numerical analysis. A finite element computer program was developed to investigate the stability of submarine .slope undergoing rapid deposition taking into account the variation in soil compressibility and permeability during the consolidation process. The relationships of degree of consolidation with time as a function of rate of deposition and angle of slope were established. A method of predicting the time of slope failure and the volume of moving mass of soil was also made.

After clay particles have been sedimented isotropically, the clay deposits have been consolidated under $K_0$-stress system. Therefore, in order to predict the behavior in-situ of normally consolidated clays, the effect of $K_0$-consolidation should be considered. A series of undrained and drained triaxial compression tests was performed on remolded specimens of clay consolidated under both $K_0$-and isotropic stress systems and the effect of $K_0$-consolidation was investigated. $K_0$-consolidation has much effect on the deviator stress, especially at initial deformation stage of consolidated-undrained tests, but has little effect on the principal effective stress ratio. Thus, the undrained strength behavior of $K_0$-consolidated samples can not be predicted from isotropically consolidated test data. However, the failure envelop, provided by the maximum principal effective stress ratio failure criterion, is unique and curved.
The purposes of this study are to investigate the mechanical prospeities of the inter mediate soils through consolidation tests and triaxial compression shear tests. The intermediate soils used in this study are artificial soils which are composed of sea clay, sand and it's crushed component. The relationship between plastic index and mechanical prosperties (permeability and compressibility) is investigated through series of consoli dation tests. Strain hardening phenomenon under shearing is explored based on several overconsideration ratios and strain rates in undrained shear tests. To make a comparative study difference of drain condition and strain rate, drain shear tests are performed with overconsolidation ratio.

For accurate laboratory evaluations of soil deposits, it is essential that the samples are undisturbed. An artificial ground-freezing system is the one of the most effective methods for obtaining undisturbed samples from sand deposits. The objective of this study is to estimate the shear strengths and the characteristics of elastic waves of frozen-thawed and unfrozen specimens through the undrained triaxial compression test. For the experiments, Jumunjin standard sands are used to prepare frozen and unfrozen specimens with similar relative densities (60% and 80%). The water pluviation method is used to simulate the fully saturated condition under the groundwater table. When thawing the frozen specimens, the temperature is measured every minute. After the specimens are completely thawed, undrained triaxial compression tests are conducted using the same procedures as for the unfrozen specimens. During the triaxial tests (saturation, consolidation, and shear phase), compressional and shear waves are measured. The results show that the freeze-thaw process has minor effects on the peak deviatoric stress and shear strength values, and that the process does not affect the internal friction angle. The compressional wave velocity increases with increasing B-value to 1800 m/s in the saturation phase, but tends to remain constant in the process of consolidation and shearing. The shear wave velocity decreases with increasing B-value in the process of saturation, but changes velocity in accordance with the change in effective stress in the processes of consolidation and shearing. The compressional wave velocity has similar values regardless of the freeze-thaw process, but values of shear wave velocity are slighly lower in frozen-thawed specimens than in unfrozen specimens. This study is a preliminary experiment for estimating the shear strength and characteristics of elastic wave velocity in undisturbed frozen specimens that have been obtained using the artificial ground-freezing method.
Recently, ground has been often exposed to high temperature environments such as chemical ground improvement, thermal energy storage system, and underground nuclear waste disposal system. Since the behavior of clay is sensitive to temperature change, the studies on the engineering properties of clay subjected to high temperature history may be important. This paper presents the mechanical behavior of clay with high temperature condition. $\bar{CU}$ tests using a high temperature and pressure triaxial compression test apparatus were carried out in order to investigate characteristics of deformation, shear strength, compression and consolidation of clay. During tests, the temperature was varied from $20^{\circ}C,\;50^{\circ}C,\;75^{\circ}C,\;80^{\circ}C\;to\;100^{\circ}C$.
A series of laboratory tests for the marine clay sampled under the sea of Kwangyang bay have been conducted. The main types of tests are the general index property tests, the oedometer tests and the triaxial compression tests in both undrained(CIU) and drained(CID) conditions. The clayey samples, classified as CL, CH with natural water content of 38.3~84.6% and liquidity index of 0.71~0.98, are in the normally consolidated state with O.C.R. of 1.0l~l.60. The undrained stress path from CIU tests can be normalized with isotropic consolidation pressure$(p_0)$ and equal shear strain contour is linear passing through the origin in the (q, p) plot. The undrained shear strain is found to be the only function of the stress ratio($\eta$) and linear with intercept in the ($\varepsilon/\eta,\eta$) plot. The built-up pore pressure normalized with pc is also linear with respect to $\eta$. and its slope is defined by ´C´ as a pore pressure parameter. Equations to predict the undrained stress path and the shear strain are proposed. It is proved that the proposed equations give better agreements to the measured values than the Cam-clay theories. The failure points of the stress path are located on the same C.S.L. in (q, p) plot during both CIU and CID tests, which justifies the concept of critical state theory.
The behavior of clays subjected to Repeated loading has been shown to be very different from the behavior under a single load application. Especially the behavior of pore water pressure is Qf considerable importance. The objective of this work is to experimentally study the stress-strain characteristics of clays, and this study includes the pore water pressure which is built up during the load repetition. For this study, the samples were consolidated isotropically in the triaxial cell during 24 hours, .and monotonic strain controlled triaxial test is carried out by uslng the tests of Compression failure, Cycled at failure, and Nonfailure equilibrium on remoulded samples under undrained .condition . Consequently there exists a critical level of repeated loading which seperates the behavior of a particular sample into two distinctly different patterns.

The aim of the work described in this paper is to study the shear characteristics of the weathered granite soil. To this end, a series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests are carried out to investigate the shear parameters-cohesion and internal friction angle for the degree of saturation and degree of weathering. From the results, it is found that the shear parameters of weathered granite soil are influenced on the degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance. Especially, internal friction angle is more influenced on the upper factors than cohesion. And shear parameters are more acted on the degree of saturation than the degree of weathering in the test range. It is, therefore, recommended that must be considered the conditions of granite soil-degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance etc-in case of the calculation of bearing capacity, stability analysis and other designs with shear parameters.
In transportation geotechnical engineering, stress-strain behavior of earth structures has been analyzed by numerical simulations with the implemented plasticity constitutive model. It is a fact that many advanced plasticity constitutive models on predicting the mechanical behavior of soils have been developed as well as experimental research works for geotechnical applications in the past decades. In this study, recently developed, a unified constitutive model for both clay and sand, which is referred to as CASM (clay and sand model), was compared with a classical constitutive model, Cam-Clay model. Moreover, integration methods of stress-strain rate equations using CASM were presented for simulation of undrained and drained triaxial compression tests. As a conclusion, it was observed that semi-implicit integration method has more improved accuracy of capturing strain rate response to applied stress than explicit integration by the multiple correction and iteration.

Greenhouses have been damaged due to the uplift pressure from strong wind, for which rebar piles are often installed near the greenhouse to resist the pressure. For the effective design of rebar piles, it is necessary to access the shear strength of soil on which the greenhouse is constructed. This study experimentally evaluates the shear strength of the soil beneath the greenhouse. Four soil samples were collected from four agricultural sites, and prepared for testing with 75, 80, 85, and 90% compaction rates. One-dimensional unconfined compression test (UC), consolidated-undrained triaxial test (CU), and resonant column test (RC) were performed for the evaluation of shear strength and shear modulus. Generally, the higher shear strength and modulus were observed with the higher compaction rates. In particular, the UC shear strength increases with the increase of #200 sieve passing rate. Resulting from the CU test, the sample with the most of coarse soil had the highest friction angle, but the variation is small among samples. Resulting from the CU and RC tests, the ratio of maximum shear modulus with the major principle stress at failure was the higher at the finer soil. The ratio was two to three times greater than the ratio from the standard sand. This indicates that the shear strength is lower for the fine soil than the coarse soil at the same shear modulus. The results of this study will be a useful resource for the estimation of the pull-out strength of the rebar pile against the uplift pressure.
