This study compares marital satisfaction between male and female rural migrants and explores the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The survey included 483 migrants living in rural communities of North Jeolla Province and South Jeolla Province. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross tables, the t-test, correlations, and a hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. According to the results, marital satisfaction was higher in men than in women. In addition, the effects of characteristics of rural migrants and family values on marital satisfaction were greater in men than in women. The major determinant of marital satisfaction in men was economical preparation, whereas that in women was family values. Economical preparation for rural living was more important for men, and the sufficient understanding and internalization of rural living was more important for women. In particular, family values represented the main variable between men and women in terms of marital satisfaction. These results suggest that family relationships may be the most important factor influencing rural migrants' marital satisfaction and that spousal relationships may be the core factor influencing family relationships.
The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the efficacy of a Family Relationship Enhancement Program for runaway youth. The theoretical framework of this program was based on Solution-Focused, Satir's Experiential, and Cognitive-Behavioral models. Need assessment analysis of youth shelter workers, focus group interviews with runaway youths, and advisory council meetings were used as a complementary resource for this study. Thirty-one runaway youths from 6 youth shelters in Seoul and Kyunggi participated in 4 two-hour sessions of this Family Relationship Enhancement Program. All participants were subjected to pre-test and post-test analysis in order to assess the efficacy of the program. The results of this study showed that the Family Relationship Enhancement Program had significantly increased the participants' self-esteem, communication capability, and understanding of family values.
Character education is an opportunity for students to develop character through teaching values in schools. In the past, students have been taught values at home but contemporary society has strongly encouraged the public schools to provide time for children to learn values because society is facing a crisis of human values that affects the behavior of individuals. According to research findings, the primary benefit of character education is to develop the intellectual, personal, and social aspects of students. However, there are some problems concerning how to teach values and how to evaluate student outcomes in public schools. This article explores the current character education in the U. S. through a review of the literature in order to reach a better understanding of how character education might be included in the Family and Consumer Sciences Education curriculum.
The objectives of the unit ‘Family Relations’in high school Home Economics Education is to help the students cultivating proper values and self-esteem, maintaining harmonious personal relations not only by understanding human relationships in family, but also by acquiring role play, and is to wisely cope with many problems occurring in social life, which are indispensable for those living in modern society. But at present it is hard for the students to gain those abilities mentioned above, for the present unit ‘Family Relations’lays special emphasis only on memorizing specific knowledge about the understanding of a family. To improve the present educational situation, this study develops a new teaching-learning method based on the role play model concerning the ‘Family Relation’area of high school Home Economics Education curriculum. This study is theoretically based on the literature and previous studies on present problems of our various family relations, and solving its problems, and suggests lesson model of role play and its effect. This study was performed as following procedures: the ‘Family Relation’unit of the present high school Home Economics Education curriculum was analyzed, and surveyed students to discover the conflicts and their solutions the high school students are now experiencing in their family relations. Accordingly, a new lesson model of the ‘Family Relation’area, applying role play was developed. Based on the developed lesson plan, two-hour classes were experimented and positive evaluation was given by students.

In this paper, we examine the roles, mutual relationships, and guidelines for a healthy life as exemplified by the characters Santiago and Manolin in Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Old Man and the Sea" and use this content to compare the happy home life of elderly couples in Korea. Through a metaphorical exploration of the lives of elderly husbands and wives in Korean society, the study examines their significance as the core of the family, particularly during their senior years. Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" portrays Santiago as a unique embodiment of virtue and humanity. As an elderly male fisherman, he symbolizes a profound connection with the sea, as well as qualities such as courage, patience, and unwavering passion. His story underscores the importance of pursuing new goals and maintaining hope even in old age. The relationship between Santiago and Manolin provides insights into the dynamics of elderly husbands and wives in their domestic lives. Manolin's unwavering support for Santiago and his understanding of Santiago's dreams exemplify the significance of mutual support and the establishment of common goals for elderly couples. These characters serve as exemplary models for understanding and supporting one another within a family setting. Within the context of family life, applying these exemplary models and relationship dynamics fosters mutual respect, collaboration, emotional expression, and effective communication. Supporting each other and working towards common goals can enhance the family atmosphere, resolve conflicts, and enrich domestic life. Furthermore, when elderly couples share common goals and enjoy activities together, they strengthen their bond and create a more fulfilling family life. These shared activities deepen the affection between elderly husbands and wives and contribute to a thriving household. Through the characters of Santiago and Manolin in "The Old Man and the Sea," we present in this study a deeper understanding of the values and roles within the domestic lives and affection of elderly husbands and wives. Mutual respect, collaboration, emotional expression, communication, mutual support, common goals, hope, and shared domestic activities all play pivotal roles in maintaining a healthy family life and establishing happiness and well-being within the family. We expect this study to offer valuable insights into the fields of family studies, elderly welfare, and sociology.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to have diachronic understanding of holiday stress that has become the social issues through the analysis on the news articles about holiday stress from 1993 to 2016. Method: For this purpose, 416 articles and 457 cases about holiday stress from 5 daily newspapers such as Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, Dong-A, Hankyoreh and Kyunghyang Shinmun etc. have been analyzed, conducting the qualitative and quantitative analysis together. Results: Firstly, the articles on holiday stress have been increased, showing the rapid increase per year for the last 20 years. It is presumed to be closely related to the socio-economic situation. Second, although there have been 'married women' overwhelmingly as the subject of holiday stress, the frequency of the young generation has been increasing recently including the 'married women'. Third, the 96.7% of the contents from psychological appeal appeared in the case of holiday stress is related to family values. Especially, the holiday stress related to 'value of patriarchy' was the biggest stress. However, there has been increasing holiday stress caused by 'value of kinship' and 'value of marriage' recently. Forth, as a countermeasure against the holiday stress, the 'perception on the change of family values' has been quantitatively suggested and it has become actively appeared in terms of contents after mid-2000s. However, it has been appeared low in terms of quantity and content recently. Conclusions: This study has significance since it has been verified that the holiday stress started from 'married women' but it has been expanded to the young generation and it is related to the change and co-existence of family values of our society.
The number of Healthy Family Support Centers has dramatically increased during the past eight years since the Framework Act on Healthy Families was enacted. This phenomenal growth is largely credited to Certified Healthy Family Specialists (CHFSs). Despite their contributions, the job and working conditions of the CHFSs have rarely been explored from the insiders' perspective. In this study, we aim to delineate CHFSs' job and working conditions from their own narratives in order to improve an understanding of CHFSs' profession and work environment. We conducted in-depth interviews with nine CHFSs and a focus-group interview with five CHFSs. Our findings revealed that CHFSs took pride in their professions, internalized their professional mission of enhancing family strengths, and highlighted CHFSs' unique professional role in comparison to other human services professionals. In conclusion, CHFSs showed a strong professional identity consisting of rich professional knowledge, solid career goals, and integrated socio-political values. Contrary to the positive perception of the CHFSs' job, CHFSs expressed challenges in their working conditions in terms of small-scale organizations at local Healthy Family Support Centers, a heavy workload, hierarchical relationships with local government officers, and the unsatisfactory payroll and promotion system. This study contributes to a better understanding of CHFSs' job and their working conditions and provides insights on how to enhance professionalism among CHFSs and their work environment. As for policy implications, we suggest advancing qualifications for CHFSs, improving professional training programs for current CHFSs, and expanding small-scale organizations.
This research reports on a qualitative analysis of email facilitated reflective dialogue with seven college students whose parent dies. The study was exploratory in considering cultural values on intact family and asked the question: What do children experience after parental death in terms of the relationships with intra and extrafamily systems? Young adult children of single parent family expressed that they felt social pressure to practice filial piety toward their single parent. They made efforts to fulfill the social expectation and to achieve social desirability. Social stigma from extrafamily systems affected the experiences of the bereaved children. In terms of intrafamily system, young adult children tend to idealize their deceased parent. Single parents depended on the young adult children, which made parent-child relationship enmeshed or conflicting. The holistic view of the study highlights the importance of interactions between individuals and the intra and extra family systems when understanding family loss experience of the bereaved young people.
To enrich a country's food culture, it is essential that residents understand and care about that culture. Although various efforts to globalize Korean food have been made outside Korea, the importance of understanding Koreans' perception of and increasing interest in Korean food has been neglected. Thus, this study was conducted to identify the cognitive structures regarding Korean food among 30 Koreans living in metropolitan cities using in-depth laddering interviews based on the means-end chain theory. The most dominant cognitive structures toward Korean food were familiarity (attributes), ease of digestion and health (functional consequences), sense of responsibility and will to live (psychosocial consequences), and family affection and sense of achievement (values). In short, Koreans were found to consume Korean food to achieve perceived high-dimensional values rather than simply for its attributes or benefits. These findings have important implications for future strategies and policies aimed at increasing Korean food consumption by Koreans, as they suggest that underlying and symbolic values rather than the attributes of Korean food are more effective in promoting its consumption. Further studies on understanding perceptions and values using a larger Korean population are needed to preserve and further develop Korean food.
This study clarifies the definition of and to provides guidelines on educational objectives, core concepts, and content in developing a Human Rights Education Program for families. The Delphi survey method was used to develop a Human Rights Education Program for families. As a result, a Human Rights Education Program for families was defined as education that would ensure all members of the family enjoy universal human rights without discrimination. In addition, that the prejudice and discrimination against socially marginalized would not be created within the family by learning values and attitudes that respects human rights and freedom. The objectives were to learn the merit of respecting individuals, relationships, and community. Core concepts of the program were the rights for myself and others, communicating and responsibilities and a sense of citizenship. Content included human rights, respect of oneself and others, empathetic understanding, acceptance, communication in an intimate relationship, conflict management, sharing the role of caring the family, no discrimination against the socially marginalized, and creating an inclusive community culture. This study can be used as a guideline for family human rights education based on family human rights, which is the core of family democracy.
